Shrek: The Musical DVD Review

The Broadway show, Shrek: The Musical, makes its way to dvd. It follows the plot of the movie its based on pretty closely, finding Shrek's swamp overrun with fairytale creatures which causes him to get mixed up with Farquaad's quest to save Princess Fiona from her Dragon guarded tower, giving Shrek and Fiona a chance to meet and fall in love.

Of course its chock full of songs that were not in the original Shrek movie, but its also a little less kid friendly with its bawdy humor and one liners. It totally works for the show though. The over the top production numbers fit in perfectly to this fairytale setting, and the new backstories of our favorites, Shrek and Fiona bring just enough newness to keep it interesting.

Many props have to go to Christopher Sieber (Lord Farquaad), who performed on his knees the entire show, including dance numbers. The performances are tip top, as is the artistry and costumes. A favorite scene is the one where Donkey meets the dragon. That was one scene I was worried about, but between the harmony of voices that make up the dragon, to the dancing it came together flawlessly.

Special Features include:
  • From Swamp To Stage: The Making of Shrek the Musical-Follow the cast and crew of Shrek the Musical as they take you behind the scenes and show you what it really takes to make a Broadway show come to life!
