Bram Stoker's Desk, Where Dracula Was Born

Before Twilight, Before True Blood,
And Before The Vampire Diaries
It All Began In One Spot
The Place Where Dracula Was Created
Not Transylvania...

The Writing Desk Of Bram Stoker
Now Going Up For Auction
From Profiles In History

LOS ANGELES- OCT 31, 2012- Profiles in History, run by Joe Maddalena, is proud to announce that the desk where Bram Stoker wrote Dracula will be a part of their Hollywood Auction on December 15 & 16.

It was at this desk that Irish borth author Bram Stoker (1847-1912) created the most famous literary character in the world -- DRACULA (published in 1897).  At the beginning of the last century, Stoker gave this historic desk to his close friend JSR Phillips, editor of the  Yorkshire Post.  The author often stayed with Phillips at his home in Balmoral, Headingley, Leeds.  Over the past century, the desk had become battered, with the drawers missing and its legs being sawn short.  The owner of the desk commissioned master furniture artist Mark Brazier-Jones, whose works are held in the esteemed collections of The Victoria & Albert Museum, The Louvre and The Museum of Art and Design, among others, to preserve and enhance the cultural artifact as a work of art.

Brazier-Jones states in part: "Even as a new desk, in its day, this was a modest item of furniture, a place for a man to work, and yet possessing a noble honesty.  I wanted to keep the desk complete and intact, to save all its scars and broken varnish, this history alive with its gnarled textures...I decided to attach, via callipers and clasps the necessaries to regain functionality.  To this I have also embroidered imagery appropriate to the great man's inspirations and imaginings.  I visualize Stoker sat pen to paper contemplating a moonlit rose garden, breathless milk white cleavage and blood soaked lace.  All the fixtures and fittings I have created are in bronze and burnished steel. He has also leather lined two secret compartments I have devised (the position of which will only be revealed to the final owner of the desk).  There is also a bronze 'treasure chest' secret compartment carved with a tangled rose vine bas-relief.  This, though hidden, can more easily be found and as such may act as a decoy for the other two compartments. The face panel of each drawer is acid etched through to copper and nickel layers.  The effect is to subtly represent a misty tableau of Whitby Abbey by moonlight high on the cliff above Whitby Harbour surrounded by gravestones and bats.  Over these drawer fronts are five bronze handles, each one different.  On the lower left, a bat, to the lower right, a savage hound (in Stoker's book Dracula arrived in Whitby as a giant dog).  The three upper drawers consist of scrolling rose thorns and buds.  The interiors are lined in deep buttoned blood red velvet.  The baroque rose motif is used again where they seem to crawl up and across the table top frame giving the feeling time has stopped like an overgrown grave."

Brazier-Jones designed and crafted a magnificent candelabra congruent with the Dracula theme to set atop this functional work of art.  A truly breathtaking piece, the desk and candelbra are expected to fetch $60,000 - $80,000.

The Evil Dead Trailer is here!

Since the Evil Dead movie was first announced I've been super excited, but slightly unsure how I felt about the lack of Bruce Campbell. Let's face facts, Bruce makes everything better, and though he stood firmly behind the movie, along with Sam Raimi, it's not going to be the same, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Well, our first glimpse of the movie is here, and all I can say is Wow!

Not only does it look really scary, seriously scary, it's more than a little gory, and this girl is loving it!

Check it out below:

Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

A core cast of young, fresh talent includes Jane Levy (“Suburgatory”) as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia, and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie.

AGENT 88, Kickstarter’s Highest Funded Web Pilot, Blasts into Long Beach Comic & Horror Con‏

AGENT 88,
Kickstarter’s Highest Funded Web Pilot,
Blasts into
Long Beach Comic & Horror Con

Phenomenon Web-series Creators and Cast Host Panel,
Screen Exclusive Clips of Debut Episode

Saturday, November 3rd, 6-6:45 pm, Room 104A

Agent 88
LONG BEACH, CA (October 22, 2012) – Adding even more talent to this year’s show, Long Beach Comic & Horror Con today announced that Dig Deep Entertainment and Hurricane Entertainment will bring their hugely-anticipated web-series, Agent 88, to this year’s convention for an interactive panel and exclusive screening of clips from the debut episode. Director/producer/artist Digger T Mesch (Art Asylum, Minimates Creator) and producer/editor Jan Utstein-O’Neill (Violent Messiahs, Valhalla) will lead the panel along with the entire cast of the series.

AGENT 88 is the story of the world’s deadliest assassin - an 88 year old British woman with Alzheimer’s. This dark comedy meshes wry wit with cutting-edge action, slick visual effects and the conviction that “Killing Just Gets Better With Age.” The Agent 88 panel will be on Saturday at 6 pm in room 104A, and the cast will also host a signing at their booth from 3 to 4 pm.

"Long Beach 2012 is going to make Long Beach 2011 feel like Long Beach 1911! The whole AGENT 88 team is psyched, it's one of our favorite shows!" said Mesch.

"Phil and Martha, the show's organizers are both amazing people. I'm not sure which I look forward to more, seeing them every year or attending their show.  They make the experience inviting, fun and full of surprises," said Utstein-O’Neill.

Joining Mesch and Utstein-O’Neill on the panel will be the show’s cast, including Kay D’Arcy (CRIMINAL MINDS),Ernie Reyes, Jr. (TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, THE RUNDOWN), Carlos Gallardo (EL MARIACHI and DESPERADO), Joseph Gatt (THOR and STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS), Damion Poitier (The Avengers) and Ryan P. Martin (ULTRAVIOLET and KILLER INK), Alexis Cruz (STARGATE, SHARK), and Scott Vance (24, ALIAS). Writer William O’Neill (Violent Messiahs, Snake Plissken), and Director of Photography Joseph Setele(Night of the Living Dead 3D, Jericho) will also join the discussion of how Agent 88 became the highest grossing web series pilot on Kickstarter, cashing out at ten times more than the average series.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to have Dig Deep and Hurricane back this year. Their continued support of the show knows no boundaries. We have watched Agent 88 from its inception, and we are so happy for Jan, Digger, and their crew. We can’t wait to see what they bring to the show for the fans!” said Phil Lawrence, Co-Owner and Sales Director for Long Beach Comic & Horror Con.

Offering a weekend packed with special guests and exhibitors and engaging panels, Long Beach Comic & Horror Con will be open on Saturday, November 3 from 10:00am to 7:00pm, and from10:00am to 5:00pm on Sunday, November 4.

Lost Girl Season 1 DVD/Blu-Ray Review

Lost Girl is a witty, gritty and way more fun than it really has a right to be. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, and really anyone who enjoys good television should be tuning into this. The humor infused at just the right breaking the tension is perfection, and let’s face it, having a succubus for a heroine doesn’t hurt either.

On the grimy streets of Toronto, there are magical, ancient beings that humans are not even aware of, not even the sexy succubus Bo (Anna Silk) knows about the others like herself out there, having been raised by humans. She comes under the suspicion of the Fae after saving a human, Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) who insinuates herself into Bo’s life, which not only complicates it but changes it forever. Bo soon learns that the Fae are divided between Light and Dark and while they demand she chose a side, she refuses to make a choice.

Each episode features a “creature of the week” format, as relationships are established and Bo searches for her true identity and tries to figure out where her heart lies. Her two main love interests don’t adhere to your normal cookie cutter love triangles, both actually bring something different to the table. Dyson, the light fae werewolf, is the territorial alpha male, providing sexual healing - literally - in an electrifying friends with benefits relationship. Lauren, the fragile human, geeky beta female, provides the human warmth and emotional connection/support Bo so desperately needs.  While I’ve firmly got my membership in Team Dyson, both relationships are filled with oodles of chemistry, and watching them unfold and are both heart-wrenching and beautiful.

But the best relationship may be the one she crafts with Kenzi inside their home sweet crack shack. Kenzi simply has the best lines of the series. She simply steals the show every time she sets foot on the canvas. Ksenia Solo showcases the multifaceted Kenzi with her quirks, cleverness, all while being utterly loyal to Bo. Though she’s only human she manages to stay in the middle of fae society.

Really,  the cast of this series is really superb – Anna Silk manages to be sensual without being cartoonish, she has this air of innocence that seems imbued into her rather than forced. Bo is a genuinely nice person with deep-rooted morals, she just happens to also be a succubus. Kris Holden-Ried is amazing as the hard-nosed cop who falls completely in love with her; K.C. Collins is the perfect counterpart to Kenzi as a fellow sidekick and Rick Howland is pure AWESOME. He’s secretive and caring and way bigger a piece of the puzzle than you expect, but he is fantastic. The one actor I couldn't quite connect with was Zoie Palmer, who always has a weird half-smirk on her face, and maybe I’m just biased but felt her relationship with Bo was a little forced.

The DVDs are pretty flawless, they’ve transferred well, and as a bonus with the DVDs and Blu-Rays you get some uncut footage, which makes this girl more than a little happy.

The Extras are kinda sparse. They include Cast interviews, Crew Interviews, Behind the Scene Clips, and Previews.  I would have loved to see some bloopers, because this cast is hilarious together, and hearing them at comic con, they had such a good time filming. The Cast interviews are quite short, although there are several each only seem to a question each.

All in all, while Lost Girl isn’t fun for the whole family, it is definitely on the top of my must watch list. If you haven’t already ordered a copy, run out to your nearest store and pick up a copy. You won’t regret it.

Series Synopsis: Bo is a gorgeous renegade. An irresistible beauty. And a deadly succubus. For years, she had no idea what she was or why every new lover died in the throes of passion. She fled one corpse after another until a chance encounter with the puckish thief Kenzi exposed Bo's existence to the Fae. This ancient society of supernatural beings exists outside the realm of mere mortals. Within their world, there are only two sides: Light and Dark. Each member of the Fae must choose who they will serve. But not Bo. Driven to discover who she really is, Bo vows to live on her own terms even if it means existing in the abyss between darkness and light. With the help of the mischievous, but loyal, Kenzi, the handsome shapeshifter Dyson, and the beautiful human scientist Lauren, Bo will use her powers of seduction to unravel the riddle of her mysterious past.

Indie Film's Top Pin-Up Girls

Indie Film’s Top Pin-Up Girls

Debuting on Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 30

Writer/actress Zoe Kazan stars in Ruby Sparks -- her first feature film as a screenwriter as well -- as the title character that is created out of Calvin’s (Paul Dano) mind as he is writing his latest novel. Here, we’ll outline our other favorite “Indie Film Ladies” including Brit Marling, Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Olsen and Jessica Chastain.

From the directors of Little Miss Sunshine comes a “charming and delightful” (Marshall Fine,Huffingtonpost.com) romantic comedy starring Paul Dano and writer-actress Zoe Kazan.  Struggling with writer’s block and a lackluster love life, once-famous novelist Calvin (Dano) creates a beautiful fictitious character named Ruby (Kazan) who inspires him. But not only does this bring his work to life- it also brings Ruby to life- literally! Face-to-face with an actual relationship with his once virtual girlfriend, Calvin must now decide whether to pen this love story or let it write itself. Also starring Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas and Elliott Gould, Ruby Sparks is a smart coming-of-age story that proves true love can be remarkably magical.

Brit Marling

This blonde-haired beauty has written and starred in two sci-fi-esque Fox Searchlight films: Sound of My Voice and Another Earth. In the latter, she stars as Rhoda Williams, a young girl whose entire life is thrown for a loop when she crosses paths with a composer in a tragic accident. In Sound of My Voice, she portrays the mysterious Maggie, a cult leader who claims to be from the future. Now, she’s working on her latest outing with Voice director Zal Batmanglij, The East, which stars Marling alongside Ellen Page, Alexander Skarsgard and Patricia Clarkson.

Every life is death, and most deaths are suicides. Some are just more gradual than others.--Maggie

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey turned heads when she starred in the hit romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer alongside Joseph Gordon–Levitt as Summer, a girl not sold on true love. The bright-eyed comic talent is now starring in the popular sitcom New Girl on Fox as another quirky and offbeat chick with a sense of humor trying to figure out life in her early thirties.

You weren't wrong, Tom. You were just wrong about me. -- Summer

Elizabeth Olsen

The other Olsen sister has been busy making a name for herself with smaller, critically acclaimed films, like the tense and dramatic Martha Marcy May Marlene. In the film, Olsen plays Martha, a traumatized ex-member of an abusive cult trying to separate her past’s memories from her current day-to-day. Olsen has several films in the works including Theresa Raquin and Very Good Girls.
