Halt and Catch Fire S2E1 - "SETI" Recap

Fast-forward two years from season one and we find our team of tech-geeks busy at work. Cameron and Donna opened up an online-gaming company called Mutiny which is showing signs of predicting the need for chat rooms, IMs, social networks. Gordon has successfully orchestrated the sale of his company and Joe is living a happy life of domestic bliss with his girfriend and former college sweetheart, Sara. They're shown to be enjoying some quality time together with some other friends/couples around a campfire sharing a few beers. Sara shares the story of how they met and it's honestly a bit disarming to see Joe so settled. He talks about getting out of the computer industry because he was unhappy with himself and needed a bit of self-maintenance. He helped a company grow and be sold and now with his large share of the profits he plans to move from Texas to the Silicon Valley to start his own company... though it doesn't look as if Sara's quite as keen on moving.

When Cameron and Donna's power goes out at their house, Cameron begins to plug some of their equipment into the outlets next door. Donna warns her they need to stop breaking those laws but Cameron is confident that they can handle the fines and she'll get more equipment to handle things. Later Donna and Cameron get into an argument because Donna feels she has to pick up the slack to make sure things get taken care of but she doesn't want to be the resident-mother; she took this job because she wanted to do what she loves.

Gordon is shown to have developed a bit of an affinity for cocaine. But he's got a big day ahead, as he's got a large check to collect. While waiting in the lobby, Joe shows up and Gordon seems perturbed that Joe would show up to get his share of the pie. There's no love lost between these two though they do get to talking. Joe notes that perhaps it was a mistake selling the company so soon since the company is apparently worth a lot more. They both admit there are plenty of mistakes they've made. Gordon gets to go in first to pick up his check, roughly 850K. Then it's Joe's turn. Nathan berates him for all his wrong-doings and rips up Joe's check, including setting the first shipment of computers on fire and getting John Bosworth sent to prison. Nathan welcomes Joe to sue him but Joe surprisingly leaves without kicking off on a temper-tantrum.

Cameron and Donna buy some stolen computers since they need the parts and equipment. They hold their own to ensure they're not scammed when it comes to price but after they've made the sale, and the man has driven off, they find that they're counterfeit and unless they can code in Chinese, they're out of luck. Since Donna's away making this bad buy, Gordon's left to look after the kids. It's then that Gordon starts to get a nosebleed, clearly a repercussion of his coke habit.

Cameron and Donna are out for some beers and Donna pushes Cameron to be the boss of Mutiny. This is the point where most companies go under because they're plateauing. They need new users, new subscriptions, they haven't put a new game out in 6 months, and buying stolen XTs isn't going to cut it anymore. Cameron isn't interested in being in charge because she just wants to work instead of doing project managing. Donna points out how people are spending time talking to each other instead of just when they're playing. Donna wants to develop some work with this idea so they agree to split the managerial responsibility. When the man who made the bad-sale walks into the bar, they head over to demand their money back but he pushes Cameron against the wall and tells her to walk away. She and Donna walk out only for Cameron to reveal that she swiped the man's keys. They go to presumably mess his car up but then they find that he has two new XTs in the truck, still in the boxes. They then go to steal the computers and drive away into the night just as the man comes running out.

Joe returns home without having fought for his fair share of the Cardiff sale so he returns home and admits to Sara that he didn't get the money and was shut out instead. He's moved by how much Sara believes in him and proposes to her. She is skeptical but he then gets down on one knee and she says yes. Later, Joe is shown to be doing online gaming against Cameron. Then Cameron drives up to the penitentiary to pick up John Bosworth, who had taken the rap for our programming team's cyber-crimes in season one.

Halt and Catch Fire airs on Sundays on AMC at 10PM.

Orphan Black S3E7 - "Community of Dreadful Fear and Hate" Recap

Mrs. S is able to track down a freshly-escaped Sarah and Helena. Helena, now knowing that Mrs. S was responsible for putting her in Castor's captivity, wants to kill her but Sarah stops her from doing so... for the time being anyway. Helena wants nothing more than to kill her. Helena had also been shown to be comforting Sarah regarding Paul's death, saying that he was a good man in the end. Sarah is emotionally exhausted and doesn't want to discuss it.

Alison and Donnie go meet Connie, Alison's mother, who owns the Bubbles soap shop that they're hoping to take over in order to use as a storefront for their pill-pushing. Alison seems to be insecure around her mother and appears to be feeling inadequate. Connie has even put up a campaign sign up supporting Marci, Alison's rival. Connie is stalling on signing over Bubbles to Alison and Donnie. Alison later has a campaign event and Felix attends to help Alison with it all.

Cosima is enjoying her post-hookup bliss with Shay but they're interrupted by Delphine, who wants a urine sample from Cosima because she says her numbers are worrying. Shay eavesdrops on their conversation from the bathroom. Cosima texts Aliso to ask her for a urine sample, after having a conversation with Scott about trying to get Rachel to decode the book. Alison is interrupted right before the event by a call from her mother claiming she's having a heart attack.

Donnie goes with Alison's ex Jason in order to drop off a payment to a higher-up drug dealer but when they arrive, they realise Donnie has the wrong envelope. The money is with Alison and Donnie instead has an envelope full of campaign buttons. Jason is sent to retrieve the money while Donnie must stay in the captivity of the drug-dealers.

The fight between Helena and Mrs. S hits a breaking point. Helena repeatedly hits her, insisting that Mrs. S hits her back. Mrs. S only lands one punch and then hugs her, saying repeatedly how sorry she is. A struggling Helena eventually relents and appears to make peace (somewhat) with the situation.

Alison arrives at her mother's store o find that her mother is fine and only had a panic attack of sorts. Connie then says that she can't sell Alison the store and Alison keeps getting texts from Felix who is saying that she's about to miss the photo-ops. Alison delivers an impassioned speech to her mother for never deeming anyone good enough. When Cosima arrives at the campaign space to try to get Alison's pee, she is mistaken for Alison and must now pretend to be her for the photo-ops. Felix gets her looking the part and pushes her to go through with this facade because if she wants help from Alison, then she needs to return the favour.

Back at the lab, Rachel is brought in for testing by Delphine and Scott reveals to her without Delphine seeing that he has her father's book. She claims to want to be taught the boardgame that Scott and his friends had been playing and Delphine gives permission, not knowing it's a rouse to allow them to be able to be alone in the future.

Alison arrives back at the campaign centre and spots Cosima upstairs doing the photo-ops and must hide while also being met by Jason, who tells her about what has happened regarding Donnie being held captive and the money. Alison texts Felix to help her retrieve the envelope from the table but then her mother arrives. Alison pulls her away to keep out of sight and then tells her that Alison was conceived in-vitro with the use of sperm that wasn't from Alison's father. She only ever wanted the best for her. Alison runs into Jason in the hall, and asks him to keep her mother preoccupied while she goes off and retrieves the envelope. Meanwhile, Felix is telling Cosima that she should hide in the loo until he can get Alison to come in and give her a urine sample.

Alison tracks down Felix and tells him about the envelope mix-up and has to admit that she and Donnie are drug-dealers and now Donnie is being held captive by a drug-dealer named Pouchy who coincidentally is the same man who cut off Vic's finger.

Jason is able to sweet-talk Alison's mother, seemingly making her believe in Alison more and in turn make her more compliant to sign over the business. Alison is able to swap out the envelopes and meet Pouchy's niece in the parking lot and is forced to sit there while the money is counted when she's supposed to be inside making her speech. So poor Cosima must go in and make the speech on behalf of Alison. Pouchy gets the call that the money is in play just before his muscle is about to cut off Donnie's nose.

Cosima is struggling to make a speech up and is coughing so she uses that as a guise to go backstage where Alison has made it back in and is able to swap back in to getting onstage and making her speech. Instead of the meticulously prepared one, she is inspired at seeing her mother in the audience to swift her tactics and say that her campaign is about family. The speech is well-received by the audience and Marci looks worried.

When Cosima heads back to go to the bathroom she is approached by Jason who believes her to be Alison and plants a kiss on her. After the speech, Alison learns from Cosima about the kiss from Jason and she seems quite surprised but perhaps... flattered? Alison then decides against giving Cosima her pee and says they need to be honest with Dyad because they need their help regarding their health. Cosima then goes hiding in the stall because Alison's mother has come in. Connie congratulates her on her speech, saying that she's earned her vote and gives her the form to sign over Bubbles. She also insults Donnie in the process, saying that she knows that when the time is right she will learn that she deserves better and insinuates that perhaps she can get back together with Jason. Alison then decides to spite her mother and reveal Cosima to her and the fact that she is a clone. She says that she didn't fool Alison's father the way that she had thought and instead she was implanted with a clone. Cosima leaves, feeling awkward. Connie doesn't believe Alison, thinking that Cosima must be her half-sister instead and that even though the donor was supposed to be exclusive, perhaps Cosima's mother received a sample too. She also had initially thought that Cosima was mixed-race because of her appropriative hairstyle.

Sarah learns that Mrs. S has patched things up with Helena. They fill each other in on what they've missed, including Paul's death and Gracie now staying with Mrs S.

Cosima opens up to Shay, saying she has a pretty serious health issue. Rachel is shown to be playing the farm game with Scott and she wants the book but he tells her that the book does not belong to her, nor was it left for her. Cosima is shown to be bleeding out of her vagina and Rachel begins to decode a copied page from the book given to her by Scott but says she'll only give the information to Sarah.

Orphan Black airs on Saturdays on BBC America at 9PM.

Danny Saucedo "Brinner i bröstet" - Review

Swedish ex-quiff master and two-time Melodifestivalen runner-up, Danny Sauceo, has finally decided to put his quarter-life crisis aside and return to the Swedish pop scene with his first original Swedish-language single, "Brinner i bröstet," which roughly translates to "Burning in the chest." But despite the power of that imagery, the single and accompanying video are often just lukewarm at best.

Danny Saucedo has always been an excellent vocalist. For every E.M.D. (the boyband-trio of which he was a part) single, the grandest vocal lines were always reserved for Danny. It's no surprise that on this latest single, he sounds just as good as he always has. But if the song had started at lower levels to offer up more contrast with the song's climax(es), the greater range would have allowed for more of an impact. The song also could've benefited from more deep percussion throughout the song as well as a more expansive lower register, be that from synthetic bass or cello perhaps. In fact, the greatest point of the song is Danny's emotive vocals which carry the song far more than the production itself. Critiques aside, it is a perfectly competent song and pleasant enough to listen to, but perhaps we were just expecting a more explosive comeback single. Two years is a long time to keep folks waiting...

Final point of analysis is the music video. Before we get to it, perhaps we should revel in the fact that there is a music video at all, particularly when you consider that Danny's greatest single to date, "All In My Head," never had an official music video made and had hardly any promotion for it.

The "Brinner i bröstet" music video starts off with Danny and his back-up dancers in all-white outfits and Danny is wearing some sort of veiled apron attached around his front, making viewers subconsciously reach for their dishes for Danny to wash. With his band of all-white-wearing misfit-waiters around him, I half-expected him to start spouting, "I am Jack's complete lack of surprise." Speaking of lack of surprise, the instant the sneak-peek was posted, revealing that the video would be black and white, I was left flabbergasted at why such a choice would be made for a song with the word "burning" in the title and jumped to the prediction that there would be some done-a-hundred-times-before transition to colour towards the video's end and guess what? It totally does. Little about this video is innovative. The effects (the best-looking of which look virtually identical to MĂ¥ns Zelmerlöw's "Perfectly Damaged" album cover), lowest-setting wind machine, unconvincing attempts to pantomime playing the song's piano hook by guest-artist Malcolm B, the uncomfortably blank Stepford-gaze of the video's female lead (with whom Danny doesn't even interact with once), and the dollar-store-eyedrops teardrop as part of some contrived attempt to emote the song's actually decent lyrics made this a just-okay video. Have we seen worse? Yes. But were we hoping for more? Absolutely.

But before we leave you thinking that the video has no redeeming qualities, we will note that the second set of outfits (the black-and-white outfits) are overall a much cleaner and stylish look. The use of sign language to communicate the lyrics, as there is no lipsynching at any point during the video, was genuinely touching. The choreography is decent, save for the out-of-sync execution of the moves that go down to the ground and back up again. The moving camera angle at the video's close is also a visually eye-catching point that had us thinking that when combined with the song's decent success on iTunes in Sweden, perhaps Danny is on the right path to getting his career back into a groove. We certainly hope so! We're more so befuddled by the choice to make the lead single of his big comeback be a ballad, particularly so close to the summer season, which is when Swedes tend to drop their biggest party singles. But we're happy to welcome back one of our most cherished blonde bombshells of Sweden. Hopefully, he'll build his momentum back up and return to Melodifestivalen. After all, MĂ¥ns Zelmerlöw's six-year-gap away from Melodifestivalen led him to the complete and utter slayage of Europe!

What are your reactions to "Brinner i bröstet"? Does the music video ignite your fiery fangirl adoration? Check it out on Aftonbladet and let us know!

Recently divorced, newly rich, and utterly miserable, Danny (Kevin Corrigan) would seem to be the perfect test subject for a definitive look at the relationship between money and happiness. Danny’s well-funded ennui is interrupted by a momentous trip to the local gym, where he meets self-styled guru/owner Trevor (Guy Pearce) and irresistibly acerbic trainer Kat (Cobie Smulders). Soon, their three lives are inextricably knotted, both professionally and personally.

Writer/director Andrew Bujalski (Computer Chess, 2013) returns with a fun, intimate fable that's utterly grounded in real life. As wrinkles turn into complications, then blow up into full-fledged issues, the talented ensemble keeps the pensive tone light and the complex plot breezy. The end result is a charming shaggy-dog tale that's been hitting the gym: taut, limber, and powerful.
