Teen Wolf S5E2 - "Parasomnia" Review

With only 10 episodes making up this portion of the season's arc, which will consist of two 10-episode arcs, Teen Wolf is wasting no time delving into the meat of their conflict for the Beacon Hills gang to fight off.

"Parasomnia" spends much of its time introducing us to a character named Tracy, who is being plagued with, you guessed it, parasomnia. Essentially what this means is that she severe night terrors and often struggles to know whether she's awake or asleep. Jump skip ahead where it's revealed that she's being injected with some unknown substance by the same hooded figures that sent the light-up-taloned creature to attack Scott and she is apparently turning into either a werewolf or some other similarly clawed, teethed creature. The pacing, writing, and visual delivery of this plot was well-executed and served as a way to merge with Dr. Deacon's explanation that this new threat is looking to break the supernatural laws of existence. It showed just how powerful and dangerous they are and that the Beacon Hills gang will have one hell of a time fighting them off.

Also introduced is the fact that Scott is hoping to follow in Dr. Deaton's footsteps to become a veterinarian. (Obviously True-Alpha-ing isn't going to pay the bills). It entirely suits the character, as Scott is a natural at healing and nurturing those around him. He even healed Stiles' injured hand after Stiles punched his car engine in a fit of frustration over his worries about Scott's quickness to trust others, and likely his anxieties over keeping his band of friends together once high school finishes. It's nice to see these scenes where he see how deeply Scott and Stiles care for one another, as theirs is the core friendship that the show was built on.

But getting back to Scott's interest in becoming a veterinarian, it's also nice to watch this play out as we see Scott taking this goal seriously by striving to be in the AP Biology course. Besides the obvious comedic relief of Scott being entirely proud of his knowing that 'AP' stands for Advanced Placement, we appreciate this plot point because one of the irksome reasons that often prevents us from watching media content set in high school is the often blatant disregard for academics in the plot. It's often so far from the scope of realism that we can't wrap our head around watching it.

Stiles is shown to be right in his suspicions of Theo, who is shown to be holding a man and woman hostage under the threat of violence to pose as his parents. However, we're just not buying into the threat that Theo is apparently supposed to be posing. Perhaps it comes from the fact that there just isn't enough grit or menace in Cody Christian's performance or also because it just seems too obvious for him to be some big, scary threat, particularly when we already have these masked figures to be concerned about. But we'll happily tune in for more developments on this plot point.

One final question we have is, when are we going to see Derek again? We know that Tyler Hoechlin has been downgraded to a recurring role because of his wish to pursue more film work but two episodes in and only one or two mentions of Derek Hale have been made; naturally we'd be curious as to what our broodiest of werewolves is up to!

Teen Wolf airs on Mondays on MTV at 10PM.

Dinah Nah - "Taste Your Love" Review

Our favourite Pink Lady, Dinah Nah, is back with another single to get us shaking it in all the Swedish clubs. Dinah Nah's Melodfestivalen song, "Make Me (La La La)," was the stand-out banger of the whole contest and was utterly robbed by coming in last place at the finals. Swedes struggle to know what to do with a banger (how else can we explain the whole Slayce Wilder Melodifestivalen 2014 debacle?), and there have been rumblings from Euro-pop fans clamouring for Dinah Nah to come gig at their local (gay) clubs so get on it, club-owners, and book this glamorous pop-Queen!

Dinah Nah's pink hair may be her signature at the moment but what she should first and foremost be remembered for is making killer tracks. "Taste Your Love" is an entirely on-point follow-up single. Dinah Nah is an excellent vocalist, something listeners might not expect considering the highly produced sound of her songs (unless you're listening to acoustic versions of those songs). "Taste Your Love" starts off with the levels low, before building its way up to its mainstream EDM chorus with a killer hook and potentially salacious lyrics, not that we're complaining. A little tongue-in-cheek never hurt anybody. The music video is also a commendable visual accompaniment, as Dinah and her back-up dancers dance out in the middle of nowhere, giving the glossy song a delightfully grungy edge.

This is just the sort of song we've been wanting to hear to get us pumped up for the Rix FM tour. Dinah Nah herself will be appearing on this tour so check out the full line-up to see which cities you can catch her at!

Teen Wolf S5E1 - "Creatures of the Night" Review

After four (more like five) seasons of Teen Wolf, it's essential that new things be shown to us as far as plot and characters go. This premiere started off with a bang as we see Lydia being held at Eichen House and exhibiting a kick-ass evolved set of powers. As it turns out, this whole sequence is a flash-forward, as we are left waiting in suspense to see just how she came to be committed as well as learn the fate of the rest of our beloved pack.

The Parrish 'special snowflake' plot never did a whole lot to pique our interest and it still doesn't. Whether it's simply taking too long to offer up further developments on his character and abilities, or perhaps he just pales in comparison to the array of more-interesting characters around him, we have yet to be convinced on the matter. Hopefully this will be the season to finally justify why attention has been taken to him that could have been spent elsewhere. Though we'll admit it's been rather funny to watch Sheriff Stilinski hollering at him to answer the phones.

The introduction of this new threat with the glowing talons, seriously those things would have been well-used at a blacklight club party, was exciting to watch. The fact that he was able to brutalise Scott so much before Scott eventually turned things around really had us going there! Despite the fact that it's a season premiere, we were almost wondering if Scott would truly lose his Alpha abilities and then spend the remainder of the season trying to get them back.

This insidious new Big Bad had plenty of mystery to get us pumped up for the season. From the black goop, hooded figures, and all those damn crows, plus they may or may not have some control over lightning... we don't really want to go Googling every supernatural mythology to try to sniff out what exactly Beacon Hills is dealing with, but we can't wait to find out!

With the sacrifices this group has made fighting against the forces of evil, it was nice of the Teen Wolf writers to give a couple nods to the group's fallen comrades. From the Max Carver cameo, as Lydia's hallucination of Aiden, and Scott adding Allison's initials to the library shelf (a Beacon Hills High senior tradition apparently), we nearly got teary-eyed as the show has convincingly established emotionality in this universe it has spent the last four years building.

As far as new faces is concerned, the most notable one is that of Theo, a new werewolf looking for Scott, a true Alpha whom he claims to want to join the pack of. Theo is apparently a friend of Scott and Stiles' from the fourth grade but we reckon there'll be some mysteries around him to unfold as the season progresses. One other thing we'd like to give a shot-out to is Kira's belt that turns into a katana. Where do I get one of those??? But it was sweet to see that Scott and Kira's relationship is as strong as ever. Tyler Posey and Arden Cho's chemistry is entirely endearing to watch.

Teen Wolf airs on Mondays on MTV at 10PM.

Halt and Catch Fire S2E5 - "Infiltrator" Review

It was inevitable that Joe and Cameron would be reunited at some point and tonight was the night. While Donna continues to keep her pregnancy a secret, Gordon gets some bad news that may threaten to blow up the idyllic fantasies he had going after his big payoff.

We first catch up with Cameron enjoying some post-coital bliss with her new-found beau Tom. It's refreshing to get to see a brighter, less burdened side of Cameron. Though we do enjoy her biting sass, it's nice to get to see a wider range from her. But her good mood is squashed when she learns the  deal to use more servers has been set up by both Gordon and Joe, the two people who she has no love lost for. The reunion between Cameron and Joe didn't pack quite the bang we'd have expected from them. But given the circumstances, professionalism was demanded from the both of them. They're both looking to prove something, with Cameron set on making Mutiny grow and succeed, while Joe wants to prove his worth to his future father-in-law.

But Joe's wedding may be over before it's even begun. Once Sarah gets a glimpse of the old Joe, the one with the ability to be slick and talk anyone into anything, she doesn't seem to be as keen on him. So she asks to slow down their relationship, and just as Joe had signed the prenup to prove how all he really wanted is her! It's interesting to see the re-shaping of Joe this season. It leaves us pondering just who the real Joe is. Is it the trouble-maker of season one or the seemingly reformed man we see in season two?

Donna and Gordon both have heavy burdens to bear. While Donna struggles to decide what to do regarding her pregnancy, she has yet to share the good(?) news with anyone. Her quiet torment is beautifully acted, as we feel the weight of her bracing herself for what's to come with trying to juggle new-motherhood once again along with her career with Mutiny. It's nice to see her confide in Boz when he discovers the pregnancy test and falsely assumes it's Cameron's. As for Gordon, he's left with perhaps the worst news of anyone; that he has irreparable brain damage that may yet worsen. We've been watching Gordon unravel heavily this season and it'll probably be difficult to watch him further spiral. When will Gordon hit rock-bottom? We'll have to stay tuned to find out.

Halt and Catch Fire airs on Sundays on AMC at 10PM.

Humans S1E3 - "Episode 3" Review

Another week, another Synthetic round of Humans. Before we delve into the meat of the show's plot and character developments, can we all take a moment to appreciate the gratuitous eye candy being served up by Jack Derges, as Simon the synth carer and physiotherapist? In a world where women are typically the ones to be treated as object, it's so refreshing to see the script flipped. But all jokes aside about beefcakes, Humans is smartly written enough for us to assume that Simon may yet serve to catalyse some plot by surfacing some insecurities of D.S. Peter Drummond, which will make him all the more erratic in his quest to solve the brothel-murder perpetrated by Niska.

Emily Berrington was given more room to flex her acting abilities this week, as we see Niska grappling with the unravelling of her existential crisis as well as reclaim her own autonomy, and nearly kill an apparently innocent nice-guy in the process. She nearly mistook him for a cheater based on finding a girl's hair-tie in his bathroom, which was reason enough to attempt to murder him, but upon learning that this belonged to the man's daughter, she left without harming him or further fracturing her moral compass. However, Niska still seems very much a force to be reckoned with that's just starting to come into her own. Her reign of terror is likely far from over and we couldn't be more thrilled to watch it unfold.

Anita is still as enigmatic as ever but this time, we were hurled headfirst into getting a glimpse of the other incarnation of herself, the one that Leo has been searching for. When Laura's teenaged daughter, Mattie began tinkering around in Anita's data, this other version of herself came crying out for help before disappearing as fast as she appeared. Then after Mattie uploaded the code of this prior identity to the internet, Leo's synth companion Max discovered it and now the pair are set for a course to reuniting with their long-lost synth.

Leo's a perfect match for Anita, not simply because we're still swooning over the forehead-touch in episode one. But we're as befuddled by him as we are her. We went from thinking he was human in episode one, to a Snyth in episode two, but now it seems as if he's some sort of in-between. Maybe this is a Will Smith type of situation a la I, Robot? Except instead of being full of self-loathing for having robot parts, Leo seems to be trying to be their saviour. There's enough characterisation to pique our interest but enough mystery to truly grip us. The Humans writers have certainly concocted a brilliant mixture of the two. We can't wait for next week's episode!

Humans airs on Sundays on Channel 4 at 9PM.
