Titans S01E08 "Donna Troy" Review

This week's episode presents reuninns and revelations that will threaten the very bond that has been forged among the Titans. Rachel, Kory and Gar go with Angela by train in search of a house she own in Ohio that they will use as their new home base since their previous one was being used under shaky circumstances.

While on board, Kory gets into a tussle with a stranger making eyes at her. She is suspicious of his motives, despite his claims that he was only checking her out for being attractive. She is later proved correct when he is revealed to be an agent that calls in for back-up from other law enforcement that raid the train to apprehend Kory as she is wanted for previous crimes. Once again her powers prove beneficial and through some serious fire power and explosions, the gang escapes.

Meanwhile, Dick is reunited with an old friend, Donna Troy. They are shown to have met while both serving as sidekicks to members of the Justice League. While Dick had his tumultuous relationship with Bruce Wayne, Donna was aiding Diana Prince. The reunion offers a bit of levity to Dick after the traumas of last week's episode in the abandoned asylum. But more importantly, Donna is able to translate a text that Dick had photographed in Kory's storage unit which reveals that the ancient language used had shown Kory's mission to be that of killing Rachel.

Rachel gets to safety with Kory and Angela and offers to use her growing powers to help Kory work on retrieving her memories. But the session quickly turns south because as a flash of memory returns, Kory is prompted to grab Rachel by the throat. It's a fascinating direction for the show to take and how it plays into the dynamic of memory and identity. Is the real Kory the motherly figure that looked after the other Titans, or the hired killer tasked with murdering Rachel? How will her relationships with all of the Titans be effected moving forward?

"Titans" airs on Fridays on DC Universe.

The Gifted S02E08 "the dreaM" Recap

After Lorna reprimands Rebecca for killing the innocent humans at the bank, Rebecca decides to leave the Inner Circle and runs off much to Andy's horror. John and Clarice try to track the Inner Circle following the events at the bank. They later catch up to Rebecca and she reluctantly tells them what little information she knows about what the Inner Circle is planning before running off again. The inner circle was looking into the company Regimen. After Rebecca runs off, she is captured by Fade.

The remaining Struckers meet Madeline, a scientist who is working on a cure to help stabilise the powers of Mutants who are struggling to control them. She is able to temporarily help Reed with his, and goes on to say that she wants to study Lauren's powers in order to make a cure for any mutants that want to rid themselves of their powers.

Lorna is concerned about the escalating violence and the danger that it could pose for baby Dawn. She speaks with Esme about sending her out of the line of fire and Esme suggests a special mutant school in Switzerland. Flashbacks show a younger Lorna with Marcos while she was newly pregnant and speaking with him about her father. Further flashbacks into Lorna's youth show a young teenage girl lost and confused about herself, her powers, all while living with her aunt. She isn't able to have any conversations about her birth father and the only contact she ever had with him was his leaving a medallion for her as a gift.

Lauren meets Madeline's assistant Noah who had an implant put into him that allowed him to regain control over his destructive vibration powers that nearly killed his younger brother when they were kids.

Lorna brings Dawn to Marcos so he can say goodbye and he does so, but not without repeatedly protesting that he shouldn't have to say goodbye in the first place since he's never been given the opportunity to get to know her in the first place. Ultimately Lorna decides to bring baby Dawn to live with her Aunt, now understanding that her own father must have done the same thing that she is now doing to Dawn as a way of protecting her. Later on, Lorna takes the medallion given to her by her father and turns it into a helmet.

Lauren is horrified to learn that Madeline's true intentions are to cure all mutants, particularly when it's revealed that her brother Matthew was the founder of the Purifiers.

The Gifted airs on Tuesdays on FOX at 8/7c.

Manifest S01E09 "Dead Reckoning" Review

The mid-season finale of Manifest sees a number of developments and devastating ones at that. With Ben working harder than ever to unconver answers regarding the Singularity Project, people are going to get hurt. An explosion takes place that injures Jared, and Vance is apparently dead (though we never see a body so who know for sure...)

Ben and Grace ultimately decide that their marriage isn't working, a decision that feels a bit abrupt considering how hard they've been working with one another to resolve things since Ben's return. Perhaps the writers deem it better for dramatic effect that the two be separated while Ben pursues answers while Grace tends to the children.

It appears as if Michaela and Jared are closer than ever to finding their way back to one another. She is devastated by his injury in the explosion that occurred when the heroes were freeing the other flight passengers from captivity. She visits him in the hospital and when she wakes she offers to go get his wife and instead he asks her to stay with him.

The new mystery surrounds Autumn, who had claimed to be someone that escaped the Singularity Project. In the end, she is shown to be calling UDS and asking what they want her to do next, revealing she's not all that she seems. There's a significant lack of trust intertwined with the ongoing mysteries, that creates a nice tension to the story and its dramatic impact.

Manifest airs on Mondays on NBC at 10/9c.

Legends of Tomorrow S04E06 "Tender Is the Nate" Review

When Hank becomes skeptical of the large budget the Time Bureau has in place for the Legends, Nate arranges for him to come aboard the Waverider and shadow one of the missions. This makes for a fair few complications since the Legends were entirely unprepared for such an inspection and have yet to inform Nate of the Amaya-doppelganger on board. The discovery is about as awkward as you'd expect but also surprisingly anti-climactic given all the buildup to it. It's all quickly resolved by the time the mission is completed and Nate is resigned to quite literally resign from being an official Legend and simply stay at the Time Bureau in a more bureaucratic position.

The adventure itself offers some decent comedic moments, particularly with Hank being the one to serenade the Minotaur to sleep and save the day. Ernest Hemingway also makes a cameo appearance but it's considerably less interesting or exciting than some of the other brushes with history that the team has had. Hemingway takes a back seat to the more interesting characters and only really serves a springboard to entertainment when Sara punches him for being a sexist nuisance.

Back at the Time Bureau, the secondary story centers around Nora who is now in captivity after turning herself in. Ray attempts to sneak a letter to her delivered by the newly hired Mona but a series of mishaps sets off a set of alarms and Ava ends up locked in the prison cell with them. There's some bonding, cake eating (it's Ava's birthday) and a hilarious discovery that Ray has been in the room the whole time after accidentally getting stuck in the adhesive of the envelope. We'll try not to read too much into the larger implications of Ray being that easily beat by something as innocuous as envelope adhesive, and what that would mean for the battles the Legends face. What's entirely clear at this point with how this season has been unfolding is that this series has set itself apart from the other CW DC programming. There is an absurd and whimsical spirit to the writing, stories, and adventures that works because of how joyfully the writers and actors embrace it. There is heart and deep, meaningful lessons when the moment is write to incorporate them but this unique zest is what makes Legends the best of the batch in this shared universe.

"Legends of Tomorrow" airs on Mondays on the CW at 9/8c.

Titans S01E07 "Asylum" Review

If you thought "Titans" was dark and violent before, you haven't seen anything yet. But beyond the physical violence, this is an episode that digs deeper into the psychological traumas of both past and present.

When Adamson slashes his own throat to literally force Rachel's hands so that she can use an empathic aspect of her powers to heal him. Dick and Kory are still the concerned parental figures and will not allow Rachel to be toyed with that easily. It's a dynamic that will be put to the test once the Titans head to an old asylum that is said to hold Angela Azarath, Rachel's birth mother.

Once the Titans have been captured, each is subjected to severe means of torture, except for Rachel who is being pressured by Adamson to summon her father. Rachel instead opts to undo the magic she used to save him, re-opening the throat wound so he bleeds to death.

There's a series of highs and lows with the emotional well-being of the Titans. Rachel's ongoing battle between her own morality and how it intertwines with her powers is even more significant to her story. The most important part of this story is not about a simple resolution to what side she will choose, but that she is able to learn to claim and maintain her own autonomy.

Dick's unresolved traumas are violently brought to the forefront when he is subjected to considerable means of torture. With only Rachel's pleas being able to bring him back from what a borderline catatonic state, the writers have presented the depth of this connection that has formed in the team members. It's something that will be particularly important in moving forward now that Gar is shaken to the core over having killed one of the asylum doctors that had been coming after them. Previews for next week show Dick opting to push the team away, indicating that despite the bond that has been forged among them he has much to learn about how to cope with having a family after being without one for so long.

"Titans" airs on Fridays on DC Universe.
