Open Windows Review

Open Windows is a wild crazy ride, with a convoluted plot that gets more ridiculous as the minutes tick by. It’s ambitious and innovative, but ultimately between the split screen narrative and the heavy handed manner of storytelling it’s hard to stay focused on any one thing. The overstimulation and multitasking are more headache than they’re worth.

The flick opens with ”an exclusive preview” of Dark Sky as our main character Nick Chambers (Elijah Woods) takes screen shots of actress Jill Goddard (Sasha Grey). The movie plays out in multiple screens to mimic a computer screen. It’s a completely distracting gimmick that is completely over utilized. Nick wins a contest to meet Jill, and interview her. He runs her fansite, and may be more than a bit obsessed with her. He’s very excited, but soon learns that the contest was cancelled by Chord (Neil Maskell) aka the evil British puppet master.

Chord first appears to be one of the good guys, trying to help him out. Nick came a long way to meet the actress who made a diva play and cancelled. Chord has Nick play voyeur, but it back fires when her agent and possible lover, Tony, spots him. At this point, the film’s narrative goes into overdrive, as Chord uses his amazing hacking skills to blackmail Nick into committing a series of illegal activities, including binding and gagging Jill’s boyfriend and sexually harassing the actress over Skype. Eventually Nick revolts, and Chord kidnaps Jill as his punishment.

With the assistance of a trio of Parisian hackers who mistakenly think he’s legendary hacker Nevada, Nick tries to save Jill. Rather than the smart film with a slow build up, the action ramps up, and gets downright sloppy. Nick’s transformation from geeky webmaster to hero suffers from a lack of believability. As the film races towards the final act, the movie’s flaws become too much for any sort of cohesion or closure.

The fault lies not on the actors, but rather on the material itself. Wood and Grey take the material they’re given and they do the best they can with it, but the ridiculousness of the plot and the horrible camera work coupled with the split screen shots were enough to give me a headache from all the bouncing around. The voyeuristic viewing does nothing to ramp up the tension that the film is desperate to build by the end.

Open Windows should be avoided unless you have a large stash of Adderall ready for snorting and a gallon of black coffee to get enough focus to make sense of everything that is happening.

Forever S01E03 Recap: The Fountain of Youth

Abe closes up shop for the day, watching a boy do some tricks on his skateboard. He longs for the youth to do it, though Henry laughs. Even in youth Abe wasn't as dexterous as he remembers. It's the weekend, and Henry continues to work. He hasn't discovered a way to pass on his youth, but maybe achieve his death. He's noticed that depending on the method of death he stays dead longer. Abe finds the conversation depressing, eventually on of his experiments will work and he'll be gone. He doesn't want to die immediately, but experience growing old, and eventually dying. If Abe had his curse, he'd be out living, seeing and doing everything.

A man has his briefcase snatched. He goes off after the boy who stole it, tackling the kid to the ground. As he whales on the kid, he has a heart attack, and falls over in death.

The man Bill winds up on Henry's table. Henry dissects his life based on clues, and sees that he fought back against the mugger. He cuts away Bill's shirt, and the man is ripped, surprising Henry and Lucas. His body doesn't look like that of a 67 year old. The mugger checked himself into a hospital for his injuries, Jo asks if they should arrest him for murder. Henry isn't so sure, he was 67, but had the body of a 30 year old and the brain of a 100 year old. Something doesn't add up. The son of the deceased comes in, and they show him a picture,  but he says that it isn't his father. It's him, but not the man who raised him. His father was different before his mother passed from cancer 2 years ago. After he became a different person. With the son's permission they open the briefcase. Inside they find a picture of his mother, but more importantly a business card with Youth, Vitality, Vigor and an ouroburos on it, and a whole lot of money. His body was recovered downtown, a place he hated going. They have to find out why he was down there.

They head to where his body was found, and Henry notes the skid marks on the street, signaling where Bill and the mugger had come from. Henry finds more clues to the direction from which they came, and eventually finds where Bill had started before the pickpocket made a grab for his briefcase. Bill certainly didn't fit into the neighborhood, and Jo and Henry have to figure out why he was there. They see a wealthy looking woman exit a car in very high heels. She doesn't fit in either, and they follow her into an alley, to a door with a ouroboros. Behind the door is a day spa looking place. They're selling Youth, Vitality and Vigor, offering eternity. They speak with the doctor running the place, Dr. Garner. He's marketing a new drug, Eterna, that costs thousands of dollars a week, but it works. Henry points out that it may have killed Bill, but they don't offer long life, just youthfulness while you're alive and taking it.  Dr. Garner himself takes the drug which has been deemed safe by the FDA. Henry asks about its ingredients. The Dr tries to talk fast, and speaks of body chemistry reacting different for everyone. Jo wants a sample, but the Dr. tells her the wait list is a mile long. She doesn't want it for herself, but for the case. The Dr. asks for a warrant. He's taken away by another doctor. Henry notices that the Dr. has had 2 very different plastic surgeries, which he finds odd. Jo sweet talks the Dr. to get some personal information. Henry is left on his own, and he flirts a bit with the woman they followed in and swipes one of her packages of Eterna. Jo grabbed the Dr.'s prints.

Henry remembers another offering of forever in 1906.One doctor thought that even Henry would want forever. The sanatarium worker Henry felt was offering something he couldn't actually deliver on, depriving people of the help that they needed. But Henry's colleague reminded him that breakthroughs happen all the time.

Abe finds Henry down in his lab. He's working on the fountain of youth, and Abe is interested to know if it really works. Henry cautions him to avoid it, noting what it did to Bill.

Lucas seems to have lost a second body.

Henry gives Jo the chemical breakdown of Eterna, but its all gibberish to her. Dr Garner gave them some of the big components of the drug when they were speaking with him, but he's swapped out the premium ones for a cheaper substitute, that may be causing harm. Jo tells him that she found that Dr. Garner's real name is Harrold Price and he has no medical training. He worked at a wellness clinic in Miami where two patients died, and he disappeared. Jo tells Henry to pack his swimsuit, they're headed to the Hamptons.

Jo and Henry arrive at the pool party, neither dressed for it. Conversation turns to Jo's hotness, statistically speaking only of course. Henry overly observant and odd manner continues to be somehow charming. He appreciates the efforts to conceal her looks, but its not working. Dr. Garner is surprised to see them, and they allude to taking him downtown. He can't leave though he has house guests. Jo asks if he has guests or if Dr. Garner does pointing out his real name. His colleague Ms. Kennedy asks what they're talking about, and Henry suggests she stay out of it. Garner wants to clear up everything after he gets dressed. Jo and Henry wait for him, when Henry spots the woman he flirted with at the clinic. She doesn't recognize him, and seems a little tipsy. As she stumbles, and Henry catches her he suggests that maybe she's had enough to drink, but she doesn't drink alcohol. She was drinking sparkling water. They hear what sounds like a man falling upstairs and rush up to find Garner dead in a pool of his own blood.

The killer entered the room from the pool area, and delivered a precise would to Garner's chest. Henry finds a fragment of a disposable scapel.

Garner was suffering from the same brain rot as Bill, so it was only a matter of time before he bit the big one. They were both taking Eterna, but so far they've found nothing that would do that to the brain in the drug. Henry knows they'll uncover something if they keep digging.

Back in 1906, Henry walks in on his friend James receiving shock treatment. He was trying to feel better live longer. He thinks perhaps they were too harsh, but Henry thinks it madness, wants to take him out. James refuses, he coughs up blood, and is forced to admit that he has tuberculosis. There is no cure for it at that time, but Henry thinks that they can find something, both being men of science. James isn't so optimistic.

Henry puts two and two together, and runs to Jo with his hypothesis. Tuberculosis. He wonders what if Eterna is infected with something. If it wasn't bacterial or viral it wouldn't show up on the tests. Once infected with a Pryon it spreads rapidly, and you get a pryon by ingesting pryons which are found in brain tissue. The clients have been drinking brains, but where are the brains coming from.

Henry and  Jo go to Lucas. Henry knows about the missing bodies. Lucas never loses anything. There are twelve missing bodies throughout the city, not just their morgue. Henry asks him to tell him everything about the day that the body went missing. Lucas goes into detail, and Henry focuses on the donut. Lucas doesn't normally eat donuts. It came from Anton the EMS guy, who brings him a donut whenever he brings a body to distract him.

Jo calls it in. The EMS is making a delivery when he's arrested. There's a body in his ambulance, and the brain has been removed.

Jo questions Anton about his harvesting of pituitary glands. Those are some heavy charges, but nothing compared to murder. Anton's kit was missing a disposable scapel and they have proof he was at the Hampton's party. Wen Jo mentions immigration, Anton is ready to talk. He's the maker of Eterna. In the Ukraine he studied to be a chemist, but in the US he was only qualified for EMS work, and he's ready to put it all in writing. Some banging on the mirror, and Jo goes to see what Henry wants. He wants to her to ask Anton verbatim, when he extracted the peptide complex from the pituitary gland did he use the Robowski method. She asks the question, and he says he did. Henry knows he didn't do it. He may have stolen the bodies and killed Garner, but he didn't make Eterna. There is no Robowski method, he doesn't have the know how to craft the drug. An officer gives them a list of all the Eterna clients, which sends Henry running.

Abe is busy trying to close a sale on a painting, when Henry rushes in asking if Abe took the Eterna. Abe went for a consultation, but never took anything. Henry feels like he lied to him about wanting to grow old gracefully. Abe did grow old gracefully, but he went to the clinic because sometimes he worries what will happen to Henry, who will take care of him when he's gone. Abe tells him that he's a Dr's son, he didn't fall for any of the hoopla the beautiful chemist tried to sell him.

Henry takes Abe to do a police sketch of the chemist.

Anton gets a visitor from his sister. He tells her that he took the blame for everything, that she needs to hurry up, sell the rest of the drug and make a run for it.

Jo runs the picture through the data base and its Ms. Kennedy, Garner's girlfriend. Her real name is Sasha, she's a Ukrainian chemist, here on a student visa and she's Anton's sister.

Abe waits for a sub train when he spots Sasha. He calls Henry at the station, and tells him that he sees the chemist. He plans to follow her, but Henry tells him to stay put. He doesn't listen and gets on the train.

Jo and Henry try to plot where Abe would be headed, and there's plenty of police headed towards them. Abe doesn't get off on his usual stop, and tries to alert them to where they do get off. Abe tries to get an officer stop and arrest the chemist, but he thinks Abe just hasn't eaten. Jo and Henry catch up to Abe, and head off after Sasha, forced to separate at a split. Henry finds Sasha waiting for another train. Sasha recognizes Henry, and it panics her. He tells her that he's not a doctor. He knows that she was making the Eterna. She admits that she was making it. She was suppose to use stemcells, but it was too expensive. She didn't want to make the drug, but Garner was blackmailing her. Anton worried about being exposed and killed Garner Sasha tries to jump in front of a train, but Henry catches her.

All of the clients have been called, but they only wanted more Eterna. The case is closed. As sad and dreadful as death can be, it only reminds them to enjoy life more.

Henry tried to save his friend James until the end, until James called it quits. He'd had enough medical experiments, he wanted to go outside. He wasn't giving up, but giving in, seeing life as it should, the beauty of everything. Immortals have to be reminded of that, they stop seeing the beauty around them as time stretches on.

Abe rejoices over his detaining, reminding him of his college activist days. He feels 40 years younger after the experience, and Henry 40 years older. He wants to head back into his lab, but Abe has other ideas. You only live once, and Abe wants to skateboard. Poised over a ramp, Abe goes for it.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S2E2 - "Heavy is the Head" Recap

Lance Hunter is still in the overturned vehicle following the crash we saw at the end of last week's episode. May arrives but Hunter sends her after Creel. Idaho and Izzy are dead now, and Lance is taken into custody by Talbot's men after cutting himself free. May chases after Creel on a motorcycle, putting all the bland action stars in major blockbusters to shame, as she tells Coulson she has a kill shot in sight. Coulson orders her to stand down, saying it's more important to know who Creel is answering to and she follows the order with a "Yes sir."

Skye and Tripp get back to the base with the Quinjet. Coulson gives Tripp an assignment to help them get closer to making the Bus operational again. Skye fills Coulson in on what intel she's gathered on the object. But they have bigger matters to worry about. Now that Hunter has been captured, their entire operation is at risk if he spills secrets on their operation. Meanwhile, Hunter has gotten dropped off in a field where Talbot arrives in a helicopter to pick him up.

Skye, Tripp, and Mac are looking over the cloaking device from the Quinjet. They'll need Fitz to look it over and retrofit it for the Bus but they're uncertain as to whether he can help, given his state from the accident and Simmons leaving. Skye also seems to be harbouring resentment against Simmons for leaving. Mac asks Fitz to help, but Fitz struggles to put his words together and eventually leaves to try to sort it out alone.

In the helicopter, Talbot and Hunter strike up a deal. Talbot wants Coulson, whom he sees as a vigilante. He reminds Hunter how Coulson is to blame for Hartley and Idaho's death and tells him to name his price. Hunter wants $2 million and a proper funeral for Hartley, and Talbot agrees to those terms.

Skye checks in with Coulson and learns that Hartley and Idaho are dead. She wants to go back into the field with May, who is still trailing Creel, but Coulson says no. Coulson tells Skye to pack up Hartley's things, and she tells him all the compartmentalising he is doing isn't healthy.

Fitz is talking with "Simmons" about how he could have cracked cloaking if they had only given him more time. But then they spot a packet of research on Creel's DNA results and determine that they'll try to help determine a way to take down Creel.

Creel is at a diner and a waitress accidentally touches a part of his arm that has been effected by the obelisk. May is reporting to Coulson when she hears the waitress scream inside. She runs inside and watches helplessly as the waiter turns to stone. Creel is gone again. Coulson takes responsibility for this casualty while bending a paper clip into the alien shapes like what he was drawing in the season one finale. It's then that an alarm goes off on the base. Hunter has returned and encounters Tripp, who frisks him. Hunter is brought to Coulson and says that he has been given 48 hours to turn him in to Talbot but hasn't given up the location of the base. He tells Coulson about the funeral for Hartley but not the money. He also says that now he wants to get Creel and get his payment, along with Hartley and Idaho's.

Fitz and "Simmons" are looking at Creel's DNA, talking over it, and then Mac comes up and asks about cloaking again. Fitz becomes annoyed and says he's busy. "Simmons" says she likes Mac, as he's honest and doesn't talk to Fitz like everyone else. She encourages him to show Mac the work he is doing regarding Creel. More than once, he says, "I didn't solve this today."

Skye is packing up Hartley's things when she finds a photo of Izzy, which Hunter identifies as Izzy's sister Jane. Hunter takes the medallion from her possession and says he'll bring it to Jane, who has breast cancer. Hunter talks about how he met Hartley, before telling Skye she has real skills that could earn her some serious money as a mercenary. Skye says S.H.I.E.L.D. is her life now but Hunter says it's not a life, but a job… a means to an end.

Creel returns to his truck and tries to change his form using his stash of materials. The part effected by the obelisk remains unchanged no matter what he touches. He gets a call from his handler, who promises that Hydra will "take care of him" once they have the obelisk. Talk about a dead man walking. Creel is hung up on and is about to get into a fight with some random men when Raina emerges from the shadows. She says she's a huge fan offers him a piece of "carbine," a material found in stardust, harder than diamond and able to store energy. He warns her to warn from Hydra and the obelisk-like shift moves up onto his neck. He snatches the carbine and leaves.

Coulson says they need to find a solution for Creel's powers and Skye presents a number from an encrypted Hydra channel that they're supposed to call. When they do, Raina answers. She tells him Hydra is about to get their hands on the obelisk and she is no longer working for that organisation, because world domination is "so 1945." She says Hydra won't understand the obelisk but Coulson can because John Garrett had visions after being injected by the same drug Coulson was, even going so far as to carve symbols into the wall. Raina then tells them that the carbine had a tracker on it so they'll be able to find Creel. Coulson begins to prep the team to go after Creel. Hunter wants to go with them and Coulson is hesitant at first, but eventually agrees to let him go.

Fitz is trying to explain his solution to Creel and again repeats, "I didn't solve this today," as he struggles to get his words out. Mac sends away the other scientists and eventually realises that what Fitz means to say is that he already solved this and is looking for an old design. He goes flipping through archives of Fitz's old designs and they find what Fitz is searching for.

May, Skye, and Hunter are preparing to go after Creel, who is about to meet with his Hydra contact. Hunter shoots May and Skye with his ICER and this fool is officially dead to me. No one touches my badass ladies. Hunter then goes after Tripp and uses his ICER on him too. Creel and his handler are exchanging snark but eventually come to an agreement. But then Hunter comes down and attempts to shoot Creel with his armour-piercing rounds. Creel turns to carbine, and the bullet bounces off of him. The hydra handler tries to go after the case but in the commotion, Raina has already made off with it.

Creel chases Hunter and the two have a brief scuffle before Creel prepares to use the obelisk on him. But Coulson sneaks up just in time and stabs Creel in the back with Fitz's device, leaving Creel petrified.

Hunter watches Hartley's funeral for a bit before breaking into Jane's car to leave Hartley's medallion. Coulson is there and offers Hunter a job. He needs someone willing to do the wrong thing for the right reason, as Hunter is the type of person Coulson can no longer be. Resources are limited, as are assets in the field. Hunter agrees to help and Coulson says the one thing he needs him to do is sell him out.

Fitz and Mac discuss the modified device they prepared together. Mac asks if Fitz built the original with Simmons, and tells him that he knows it's tough to lose a good partner. Skye and May are watching from afar. Skye notes that it's good that Fitz has someone to talk to and they say how everything and everyone has changed. Skye thinks something is wrong with Coulson but May says he's fine.

But in private, she tells Coulson off for going into the field. He's overly stressed and it's been 18 days since his last episode. He's due for another one. Coulson's tired of fighting it so May tells him not to, as that's what she's there for. They seal up his office and the lights are dimmed to set the scene, as Coulson begins carving those alien symbols into the wall. May stands back and snaps photos to add to the collection they've been amassing.

Raina looks at the obelisk. She is met by "The Doctor," who (if you've been paying attention to the show's casting news) you will know is Skye's father. He tells her to pick it up and she does. It glows, and displays symbols. He tells her that it just let her live and she asks him to show her. He tells her to bring him his daughter and he will show them both.

Coulson meets Talbot and his men in a field. Coulson feels bad for kidnapping him so he's brought Creel as a peace offering. Coulson is prepared to make a deal: S.H.I.E.L.D. will keep dropping off "presents" like this, Talbot will keep getting promoted, and S.H.I.E.L.D. will get a bit of breathing room. Talbot doesn't believe Coulson has the artillery so he says no. But then Coulson has the Bus reveal itself, as it has been cloaked and hovering above them the whole time (how did they not heart that???) and boards the Quinjet, which had been cloaked and sitting next to them.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on Tuesdays on ABC at 9PM.

Selfie S1E1 - "Pilot" Review

Meet one Eliza Dooley (Karen Gillan), a woman working in sales who cares a great deal about her appearance and all her social media profiles with over 263,000 followers. But following a realisation that her boyfriend is actually married while on a turbulent plane, she throws up into two barf-bags, which she later spills all over herself on her way to the lavatory. Her embarrassing moment becomes well-documented, as everyone on the plane captures it on their phones.

"Being friended is not the same thing as having friends."

Eliza realises that she needs to make some changes in her life and seeks the help of Henry Higgs (John Cho) after she sees how well he re-markets some eye drops after some bad publicity. It's not entirely clear why Henry eventually agrees to help Eliza. Perhaps he's just bored with his routine, or wants to prove that he can take on the challenge. Either way, he has quite a lot of work to do in re-branding Eliza.

For those who didn't know already, Selfie is roughly based off of Pygmalion, the play off which My Fair Lady originated. But some noticeable changes have been made to the premise, in deeper ways than just the contemporary setting. Eliza is every bit the modern woman, as she goes after Henry's help and it was her idea to begin with. We're also given an insight into her origins. Having been a bit of an ugly duckling, called "Butt," she put in the work to improve her looks. The work ethic is certainly admirable but Eliza didn't put that same work in to developing her character, or basic social skills where common decency is concerned. But these flaws are of course presented in a light-hearted way, being that this is a comedy and all.

"When I was sick, not one person called to see if I was okay."
There's a larger commentary running through Selfie, on a generation of people who are all but glued to their phones and not living their lives as they happen before them. A particularly poignant moment came when rain began to fall as Eliza and Henry are making up after a falling out (because of course it's going to rain; it's symbolic of a fresh start!) and Henry chided Eliza for trying to record her favourite sound on her phone instead of simply enjoying what's going on around her.

Eliza may be clueless about some things, but she's no ditz. Her internal monologue admits that she uses technology to cope when she is overwhelmed by her feelings. This makes her more real, while also leaving that room for her to grow and go on this journey that we will have the opportunity to watch. Karen Gillan is showing a whole new side of herself, nailing the comedic timing and fast-paced lines. John Cho's judgemental expression is enough to sell me on his performance, but everything else he does works too. There's clearly a lot more going on with Henry Higgs, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to learning more about this character. Plus, we are finally getting an Asian leading man! It's still too early to try to push these two characters into a romantic relationship together but even having that possibility brewing is so important.

Selfie airs on Tuesdays on ABC at 8PM.

Bad Education S3E3 - "Sports Day" Recap

Alfie is horrified to learn that Fraser has hired Preet to be the school's replacement P.E. teacher. Preet's fresh out of prison but Fraser believes everyone deserves a second… or third chance. Alfie passes out the sports assignments for Sports Day at random to his pupils. He then learns that Rosie's ex, Richard, will be coming to Sports Day and Alfie decides that he needs to take the opportunity to outdo him. Alfie and Rosie are still on a break.

Stephen suggests to Alfie that he challenge Richard to an endurance event at Sports Day. He has Preet give him and his pupils a crash course on fitness, as he used to be a personal trainer and will be designing the endurance event. This involves several exercises and Preet repeatedly tackling Alfie to the ground. Meanwhile, Joe is worried about having to compete against school bully Grayson in the hurdles.

At Sports Day, Alfie's father ends up getting along great with Richard. The endurance track set up by Preet is highly dangerous, including attack dogs and barbed wire. Before the hurdles event, Joe has a green paint grenade go off, courtesy of Grayson. But Grayson doesn't win the event, while Joe spends the whole event roaring while running through the hurdles. There's also been a steroids story going through the school but Xing later admits to Alfie that she made the story up just to make her story seem more interesting. Alfie believes that Richard has an unfair advantage when he mentions having a secret weapon so he and Xing go snooping in the locker room. Alfie finds a bottle of pills which in Richard's bag, which he believes to be steroids. He takes one, and downs the rest after Xing leaves but is caught by Preet, who had been on the toilet with the door open. Preet tells Alfie how he had wanted revenge on him when he was sent to prison but then shows him a sketchbook he has as part of his art therapy which is filled with homoerotic drawings of Alfie, or Alfie and Preet together.

When Alfie tells Richard about the pills, Richard admits that the pills were Viagra. Being an older man, he feels he needed some help and had hoped to become friends with benefits with Rosie. The clock is ticking till the pills kick in so he insists Preet hurry up and start the race. Alfie begins speeding through the race but has to drop to the ground and crawl to hide his erection, which allows Richard time to catch up. Preet tries to shoot Richard with the tranquilliser gun as he and Alfie are racing to the finish line but ends up shooting Alfie instead. Richard gives Alfie mouth-to-mouth to get him to start breathing again and then Alfie's erection becomes visible to everyone gathered around. He confesses how he tried to cheat but mistakenly took Viagra instead. Richard is forced to admit his "plan to succeed" plan, and a furious Rosie slaps Richard before storming off. Also, Preet is arrested.

When the photo-finish comes in, Alfie is revealed to have won the race "by a head." Xing is thrilled, as it has become the highest-selling edition ever and Alfie has saved the paper. She happily tells him that everyone is reading it, and Alfie responds with an embarrassed, "Great."

Bad Education airs on Tuesdays on BBC Three at 10PM.
