First Look: Hulu's Normal People

Normal People tracks the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in small-town west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College. At school, he’s well-liked and popular, while she’s lonely, proud and intimidating. But when Connell comes to pick up his mother from her cleaning job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers – one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying in Dublin and Marianne has found her feet in a new social world but Connell hangs at the side lines, shy and uncertain.

The series stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (War of the Worlds, Cold Feet) as Marianne, and Paul Mescal, in his first television role, as Connell.

Lenny Abrahamson (ROOM, THE LITTLE STRANGER, FRANK) and Hettie McDonald will direct the series, with Abrahamson directing the first six and McDonald directing the final six.

Adapted by Sally Rooney alongside writers Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe, Normal People is a 12-episode 30-minute drama series. Normal People is an Element Pictures production (THE FAVOURITE, THE LOBSTER, Dublin Murders) for Hulu and BBC Three. The series is executive produced by Ed Guiney (THE FAVOURITE, THE LOBSTER, Dublin Murders), Andrew Lowe (THE FAVOURITE, ROOM, THE LOBSTER), Emma Norton (ROSIE, A DATE FOR MAD MARY), and Anna Ferguson (No Offense, Prisoners’ Wives) for Element Pictures. Sally Rooney and Lenny Abrahamson will also serve as executive producers. Endeavour Content will serve as the international distributor.

SILVA SCREEN RECORDS PRESENTS The Musical Anthology of His Dark Materials Featuring Original Music by Lorne Balfe

In this introduction to the music from the television series, composer Lorne Balfe delves into the story and character themes from His Dark Materials, the new adaptation of Philip Pullman’s acclaimed trilogy. Performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the soundtrack album has attracted a stellar cast of additional contributing recording artists. The series will have its global premiere on Sunday, November 3rd on BBC One and on Monday, November 4th on HBO. The first soundtrack album – one of two soundtrack releases for the series – will release digitally on November 3rdfollowed by CD and vinyl releases later.

For His Dark Materials, Lorne Balfe has assembled a superb, diverse, and devoted cast of performing artists to present the exquisitely crafted new musical themes. Already fans of the book and wanting to contribute to the show, the album connects singer KT Tunstall, drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), cellist Tina Guo (Hans Zimmer Live and The World of Hans Zimmer), post-modern composer-cellist Peter Gregson, steam punk influenced violinist and dancer Lindsey Stirling, classical horn player Sarah Willis, BAFTA award winning composer, multi-instrumentalist Richard Harvey and Vanya Moneva’s Ethnic Bulgarian Choir.

Presented on this soundtrack album are the opening title theme, together with key character themes for the young protagonists Lyra, Roger and Will and the adults Mrs. Coulter, Lord Asriel and Lee Scoresby. Other themes present the majestic locations of Oxford and Svalbard, the people that Lyra encounters on her epic journey, the Gyptians, the Witches of Lake Enara, the machinations of The Magisterium, and The Alethiometer, the device that helps set all the events in motion.

“Since the beginning, myself and the rest of the music team knew we wanted a mixture and a hybrid,” says Lorne. “What I wanted people to feel when listening to the music is they don’t necessarily know if it’s real or not or whether it’s in the present or in the past. There are no rules and musically, it’s constantly evolving. Another crucial element we strived to accomplish was to always have a clear journey of each character’s theme. I wrote their themes separately as a journey, so that we knew musically what would happen throughout the series.”
The leading cast for His Dark Materials includes Dafne Keen as Lyra, Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Clarke Peters as The Master of Jordan College, James Cosmo as Farder Coram and Anne-Marie Duff as Ma Costa, with Will Keen as Father McPhail and Ariyon Bakare as Lord Boreal.

Lorne Balfe (Mission Impossible: Fallout, The Lego Batman Movie, Churchill) is a Grammy Award-winning, EMMY and BAFTA nominated composer. Whether on an impossible mission, the heartbreak of the Queen, the perils of the cape crusade or the soul of a genius, Lorne Balfe creates a musical voice that reflects the characters and the stories that embody them. Originally from Inverness, Scotland, Balfe has created music in virtually all genres and for all visual media with projects ranging from major studio to independent films, tent-pole video game franchises, beloved animated feature films, critically acclaimed television series, and documentary features.

His Dark Materials is produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema for BBC One and HBO.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN MEETS MAD MAX IN FORTHCOMING COMIC BOOK SERIES PROTECTOR FROM IMAGE COMICS THIS JANUARY 2020

Bestselling writer Simon Roy (Prophet) and Sideways Award-winning author Daniel M. Bensen (Junction) team up with artists Artyom Trakhanov (Turncoat), Jason Wordie (God Country), and Hassan Otsmane-elhaou (Red Sonja) for the forthcoming series Protector. This all-new science-fiction adventure will launch from Image Comics in January 2020.

"Protector is an idea that can't be pinned down to any one brain. Simon took the first step when he made a project about godlike aliens assisting in a post-apocalypse archaeological dig. I asked Simon questions about the world, which started a conversation that also included the speculative shaman-king C.M. Kosemen. Between us, we started evolving a story," said Bensen. "Simon sketched that scene out, and it floated around on the internet until Artyom got a hold of it and blasted it into the next dimension! I doubt anything would have come of Protector without Artyom's frenetic woodprint-like chunks of black and white. There's this image of 'the slave girl' (we didn't know her name at that point) riding on this awful cyborg cyclops as it claws its way out of the ruins of the old world...we knew we had to finish this story."

Equal parts Conan the BarbarianMad Max, and The ExpanseProtector is set in far-future North America. Of all the tribes that dwell in the hot ruins, the Hudsoni reign supreme, but even they fear and obey the godlike Devas. When the Devas warn of an old-world demon in the conquered city of Shikka-Go, Hudsoni war chief First Knife decides to deal with the threat personally.

Roy added: "I've always been a big fan of Artyom's work, and when we started talking about some sort of collaboration, I immediately thought of the Far-Future Iron-age adventure Daniel and I had been workshopping years earlier. Once we actually started work on the project, choosing Jason—who I had met and collaborated with, back in art school, and who had already started working with Artyom on Turncoat—for colors was a perfect fit!"

Protector #1 (Diamond Code NOV190012) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, January 29.

Protector #1 will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

GUEST ARTIST ALEJANDRA GUTIÉRREZ BRINGS THE DIRTY MIND TO LIFE IN SFSX #3 HITTING STORES THIS NOVEMBER FROM IMAGE COMICS Inbox x

The upcoming issue of SfSx #3 by Tina Horn will showcase the talents of guest artist Alejandra Gutiérrez and focus on a behind-the-scenes look at underground club, The Dirty Mind. SfSx #3 will hit stores in November from Image Comics and regular series artist Michael Dowling will return for SfSx #4 in December.

“From the moment I first saw Alejandra's story in Twisted Romance, I knew I wanted to write an issue of SfSx especially for her!” said Horn. “She's got a real gift for both sight gags and pop eroticism. Issue 3 of SfSx is the sexiest story yet, and Alejandra did a fantastic job illustrating the utopia behind the dystopia. It's safe to say this is the FIRST EVER comic with queer sex work themes both written and illustrated by queer women who are out sex workers. I'm so glad to be breaking that ground with Alejandra and Image!”

In SfSx #3, readers take a tour of this decadent underworld just as its denizens realize they need to take a stand for everything they believe in.

Gutiérrez added: "Oh my god, getting the chance to draw this issue, and do work that sort of marries two parts of my life in a fun and exciting way, like hello? Amazing, and it's like actually good? That's hot. I really love doing work that feels episodic and self contained while still being part of a bigger story, and it was fun to draw some of my real friends and sex workers I know in this issue."

SfSx is a social thriller about sex, love, and torture that reads like Sex Criminals in Gilead crossed with Hustlers—with a Sunstone twist. In a draconian America where sexuality is bureaucratized and policed, a group of queer sex workers keep the magic alive in an underground club called the Dirty Mind. Using their unique bondage skills, they resolve to infiltrate the mysterious government Pleasure Center, free their friends, and fight the power.

SfSx #3 (Diamond Code SEP190213) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, November 20.

SfSx #2 (Diamond Code AUG190210) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 30.

SfSx #1 second printing featuring cover artwork by Katie Skelly (Diamond Code AUG198267) is available at comic book shops now.

SfSx is also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

POPULAR POLITICAL CARTOONS BY KIERON DWYER TO BE COLLECTED INTO UNPRESIDENTED HARDCOVER AND AVAILABLE IN APRIL 2020 FROM IMAGE COMICS

PORTLAND, Ore. 10/29/2019 — Just ahead of election season, the fan-favorite political cartoons of creator Kieron Dwyer (Last of the Independents, LCD: Lowest Common Denominator) will be collected into a hardcover titled, Unpresidented, and available from Image Comics this April 2020.

Taking aim at hypocrisy, greed, stupidity and cultural chaos in the age of Trump, Unpresidented features a wide range of sharp-witted illustrations lampooning the bizarre course of American politics and culture since the fateful escalator ride of 2015.

“Even as a young kid, I’ve always been drawn to editorial and political cartoons, both in style and substance. The exaggerated and loose qualities of them appealed to me much in the same way that the work of Mort Drucker and Jack Davis did in MAD Magazine," said Dwyer. "The economy of information in an excellent editorial cartoon is, in my opinion, the highest form of graphic storytelling. In most ways, that is what I strive for in all my illustration work: simplicity and essence, true communication. Even before my professional comics career, my first published works were the editorial cartoons I did for my high school newspapers, both the official one and the anti-establishment underground one put out by myself and several friends. I feel I’ve just been refining that storytelling craft my entire life, but events over the last few years have had a catalytic effect on me and compelled me to express my feelings in this particular medium.”

Fans of political humor and social commentary should not pass Unpresidented by.

Unpresidented (ISBN: 978-1-5343-1587-7) will be available on Wednesday, April 29 and in bookstores on Tuesday, May 5. It can be pre-ordered at your local comic book shops on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, IndieBound, and Indigo.

Unpresidented will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

JONATHAN HICKMAN & NICK DRAGOTTA’S LONG-RUNNING SCI-FI WESTERN EAST OF WEST TO END WITH THE ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN

Issue #45 will be the final issue in the series and will land on shelves this December 2019 from Image Comics
PORTLAND, Ore. 10/28/2019 — The long-running, science fiction/western crossover series East of West by Jonathan Hickman (House of X, Powers of X) and artist Nick Dragotta (Howtoons, Fantastic Four) will come to a show-stopping end with the final issue of the series, East of West #45, set to land in stores this December from Image Comics.

“In this business, it isn’t often that you get to end a project exactly the way you want to, and I think that’s what makes this one so special,” said Hickman. “We started East of West with a story we wanted to tell and we’ve had the incredible honor of having a bunch of fans make that story a reality. So, enjoy it. God knows we have."

The beloved dystopian series first launched as a monthly series from Image in March 2013 and explores a dystopian America, divided into seven nations, wherein the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are cast as heroes.

Dragotta added: “It all goes down in East of West #45, an extra-length, action-packed issue that has been one of my favorites to draw. Creatively with Jonathan, Frank, and Rus, East of West has been an incredible ride, and none of it would have been possible without you—the readers—and Image Comics. We did it, 45 issues... thank you and enjoy the end times.”

In East of West #45, the epic world-building, political intrigue, and character drama wrap up into a final showdown that will shock fans.

The East of West series will be collected into ten trade paperbacks and three deluxe hardcover editions total. East of West, Vol. 1-9 trade paperbacks are available now and East of West: Year One and East of West: Year Two deluxe hardcovers are available now.

East of West #45 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, December 25.

East of West is also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

Praised for its emotionally compelling characters, taut storytelling, and comedic genius, Time Magazine called it “the best comic of the year” upon launch. Since its debut, Sex Criminals has garnered coverage from such mainstream media outlets as Entertainment WeeklyRolling StoneNPR, and The Washington Post and won multiple awards.

"Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky seem determined to upend every stereotype about carnal entertainment. Sex Criminals bubbles over with joyous energy. Fraction provides a charming concept and brisk storyline." —NPR

“A precision-tuned screwball comedy on its surface, and that surface is gorgeous, thanks to Zdarsky’s ace sense of design and inventive color technique.” —TIME Magazine

“An honest, heartfelt story about relationships that was more John Hughes than John Holmes.” —USA Today

“Zdarsky’s fluid, brightly hued artwork is dense with smutty gags, but this is a deeper, more understated comedy than it initially seems.” —The New York Times

“Wildly imaginative, randy and true…Zdarsky’s staging, storytelling, and character designs make this even crazier. Great fun!” —Miami Herald

"Matt Fraction seems to have a knack for taking things we may have an overly romanticized view of and absolutely normalizing it while still keeping it in its fantastical setting. Which is to say that he makes characters that are believable and real without making them dark and cynical, something I would love to see from every writer." —The Mary Sue
