Apple TV+ Releases Creepy New "Servant" Teasers

Apple TV has been busy jump-starting the promotional run for the many new series that will be premiering on their soon to be launched streaming platform. In recent weeks, the chatter was stirred up by the trailer release for "See," a new fantasy series starring Jason Momoa as a blind man trying to protect his sighted children in a world where everyone is blind and sight is considered something dangerous and threatening by the world's superstitions.

Now the latest buzz is for "Servant," a mysterious new series co-produced by M. Night Shyamalan. Though Shyamalan is not credited as a writer or director, he is set to appear with the show's promotional visit to New York Comic Con next week. Just today, Apple TV released teasers for the show that reveal very little to the audience. In the first one (entitled "Jericho"), a strange-looking baby is shown rocking in a cradle while his mother and babysitter are overheard talking about him.

This fits in well with the few tidbits of information that have been released thus far. The only premise that had been given thus far was that married couple Sean and Dorthy Turner (portrayed by Toby Kebbell and Lauren Ambrose) hire a young nanny Leanne (Nell Tiger Free) to help care for their newborn. The running tagline about further plot developments is that not all is as it seems. It's an almost frustratingly vague descriptor but completely on brand with M. Night Shyamalan's brand of mystery and in all likelihood, plot twists. Additionally, Rupert Grint is another announced member of the cast, playing a character called Julian Pearce.

The second teaser (entitled "Cricket") shows Leanne brushing her teeth and giving a voiceover about how her grandmother used to say that if a cricket came into your own home that something bad would happen shortly thereafter.

Here is where we finally begin to get a sense of what has happened in the series, as the trailer description box offers further information about the series. "From M. Night Shyamalan, Servant follows a Philadelphia couple in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens the door for a mysterious force to enter their home."

From this, we can speculate that Sean and Dorothy Turner had a baby that died and have now opted to purchase one of those 'realistic' babies as a means of coping and struggling to let go. Perhaps the further escalation of drama and conflict comes from a supernatural force or merely the belief that supernatural ongoings are infiltrating their once peaceful home. Either way, we'll be tuning in to find out!

IFC Films will be releasing THE PAINTED BIRD theatrically in 2020.

THE PAINTED BIRD is a meticulous 35mm black and white evocation of wild, primitive Eastern Europe at the bloody close of World War II. The film follows the journey of The Boy, entrusted by his persecuted parents to an elderly foster mother. The old woman soon dies, and the Boy is on his own, wandering through the countryside, from village to village, farmhouse to farmhouse. As he struggles for survival, The Boy suffers through extraordinary brutality meted out by the ignorant, superstitious peasants and he witnesses the terrifying violence of the efficient, ruthless soldiers, both Russian and German.

Arianna Bocco EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films said, “THE PAINTED BIRD is a brilliant cinematic achievement with a fiercely accomplished cast to match. We’re incredibly proud to bring such a monumental film to audiences across the country.”

Lisa Schwartz, Co-President of IFC Films added, “IFC Films is committed to providing thought-provoking and challenging films, and this is a prime example of maintaining this core mission and continuing our legacy for nearly 20 years now.”

Hengameh Panahi, President of Celluloid Dreams and Vice-President, Charlotte Mickie added, “We are delighted to be working with IFC again.  Their curation is extremely astute, and they have unparalleled expertise with important, provocative movies. We look forward to this new adventure and to American audiences responding to a 21st century masterpiece. We are also grateful to Federica Sainte-Rose at CAA for her support throughout the festival and sales circuit this fall.”

Director Václav Marhoul added, “I am extremely gratified that IFC has acquired THE PAINTED BIRD.  They have demonstrated a deep, sensitive understanding of the message of the movie, which is so important in today’s volatile world. I deeply believe the movie’s advocacy of tolerance, fellow-feeling and community must reach American audiences. IFC will make that happen.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by Arianna Bocco of IFC Films with CAA Media Finance and Celluloid Dreams on behalf of the filmmakers.

IMAGE COMICS RUSHES SEXPERT WRITER TINA HORN & ARTIST MICHAEL DOWLING’S FORTHCOMING SFSX BACK TO PRINT AHEAD OF WEDNESDAY’S LAUNCH

Award-winning kink culture writer Tina Horn and artist Michael Dowling are turning heads with their highly anticipated, sex-positive comic book series SfSx and a rare rush to second printing ordered by Image Comics ahead of Wednesday’s release. This second printing will feature new cover artwork by artist Katie Skelly.
SfSx shoves its sparkly stiletto heel right in the face of anyone who has ever tried to keep sex workers down,” said popular porn actress, author, and activist Stormy Daniels. “Tina Horn’s work reminds us how important sexual freedom is to the American spirit.”

SfSx is ramping up to be one of the most talked about series of the year with this second printing already underway, a launch party at Bluestockings Bookstore, Cafe & Activist Center, and appearances at New York Comic Con next month including signings, panels, and offsite events booked.

Horn said of the early accolades for SfSx: "The sex rebel themes of this book are extremely personal to me, so I'm deeply moved that comic book readers are already responding to the title with so much enthusiasm! This may be my first foray into the medium as a creator, but I'm a life-long lover of comics, science fiction, horror, romance, and action-adventure. I truly can't wait to connect with this community of fans."

Set in a draconian America where sexuality is bureaucratized and policed, SfSxfollows a group of queer sex workers keeping the magic alive in an underground club called the Dirty Mind. Using their unique bondage skills, they resolve to infiltrate the mysterious government Pleasure Center, free their friends, and fight the power.

“I hope that everyone who went to see Hustlers this week and feels hungry for more stories of sex workers kicking ass will put SfSx on their pull list at their local comic book store!" added Horn.

A debut comic book series writer, Horn has cultivated a dedicated audience and personal brand as the host of popular long-running kink podcast Why Are People Into That?!, a Rolling Stone reporter, and a two-time Feminist Porn Awards recipient.

The much buzzed-about new series was first announced under the former DC Vertigo line and makes its new home with Bitch Planet and Saga publisher Image Comics.

SfSx #1 is available at comic book shops this week on Wednesday, September 25.

The SfSx #1 second printing (Diamond Code AUG198267) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 23.

HARDCORE: RELOADED AN ACTION/THRILLER MINISERIES THAT HITS THE MARK THIS DECEMBER

Image/Skybound Entertainment is pleased to announce an new action-packed, five-issue miniseries Hardcore: Reloaded—by writer Brandon Thomas (Excellence), artist Francis Portela (Faith), and Leonardo Paciarotti—launching this December. It will showcase cover artwork by Nic Klein (Deadpool).

“To quote a great man, Hardcore: Reloaded is all about that action, boss. It is a celebration and showcase for the most beautiful, glorious, punishing action that comics is capable of, and figuring out a new sequence that would somehow top the one we did the issue before is a challenge every one of us embraces,” said Thomas. “Francis' crisp lines and amazing details makes for some of the most astounding artwork I've ever been connected to, and excited for everyone else's jaws to slam into the floor when they see these pages.”

Once, the Hardcore tech was used to protect our nation, but now that tech is out in the wild. And the only one who can help Agent Drake put the genie back in the bottle is his greatest enemy.

Paciarotti added: “Hardcore: Reloaded is so brutal that you'll feel how the blood splashes in your face through the pages! That happened to me when I put color to the pages! If you liked Vol.1, then with Vol.2 (Reloaded) your brain will explode with excitement!”

The original run of Hardcore—upon which this new miniseries builds—was the brainchild of comics legends Robert Kirkman (Oblivion Song, The Walking Dead) and Marc Silvestri (Witchblade).

“This comic has the hardest action scenes and at the same time fun to draw that I've had to do in my whole career!” said Portela.

Hardcore: Reloaded #1 (Diamond Code OCT190046) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, December 18.

Hardcore: Reloaded #1 will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

ALEX + ADA’S JONATHAN LUNA TEAMS WITH DEBUT WRITER LAUREN KEELY FOR NEW SCI-FI THRILLER—20XX

Image Comics is pleased to announce a new, ongoing science fiction/thriller series—20XX—by Jonathan Luna (Alex + Ada, Girls, The Sword) and Lauren Keely set to hit shelves this December.

20XX imagines a not-so-distant future—a world of norms and syms, divided by fear. Syms, a small percentage of the population with telekinetic abilities, form gangs to survive. But division only breeds more division, and Mer and Nuon experience this firsthand as they become entangled in the often dramatic, sometimes violent, but always complex social landscape of sym gang rivalries in Anchorage, Alaska.

"I’m very excited about 20XX, as it combines some elements I’ve wanted to use in a story for a very long time: gangs mixed with romance, drama, and supernatural abilities, inspired by cyberpunk," said Luna. "Lauren and I have spent over a year developing this series. It’s evolved quite a bit over that time, having gone through multiple iterations, and we ultimately took what we loved from those iterations and created something we hope everyone will enjoy. Everyone over 18, that is."

Keely added: "20XX is a very ambitious first project for me. But that’s what I love about it. I love diving headfirst into something that’s a bit outside of my comfort zone. I’m so excited for readers to experience the world that Jonathan and I have created, and I hope that this story and the themes we explore—belonging, prejudice, and morality—will resonate with readers in a way that stays with them long after they’ve put the books down."

20XX #1 (Diamond Code OCT190019) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, December 4.

20XX #1 will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.
