Lionsgate Merges with Summit, Does That Mean More Twilight?

Lionsgate Entertainment has officially bought Summit Entertainment for 412.5 million, which means that the Hunger Games studio now owns the Twilight ones. It's a huge deal, which could lead to Lionsgate getting to sit at the powerhouse table with Disney, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount and 20th Century Fox. All they would need to clinch that spot is some high-profile titles in production, but Summit's biggest franchise Twilight is set to make it's final hurrah this year. Wait, hold that thought.

Shortly after news of the sale hit, The LA Times reached out to Lionsgate chairman Jon Feltheimer and posed the question of the fate of the series after November. "I'm anticipating Breaking Dawn Part 2 being $700 million-plus in worldwide box office," Feltheimer said (should it actually reach that goal, it will be only the second in the series to do so, the other being New Moon). "It's hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700 million-plus doesn't have ongoing value. It's an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration. So the simple answer is 'Boy I hope so.'"

There is also talk of bringing Twilight to the small screen, and I cringe at the thought, but when asked about it, Feltheimer answered, "I would certainly hope so."

While the official Twilight series has come to an end in book form, that isn't exactly the end. The series's author, Stephanie Meyer, as you have remembered started penning the  novel called Midnight Sun, which tells the events of the first Twilight book from the perspective of Edward, played by Robert Pattinson, but never finished it. She wrote the first 12 chapters of the book, but stopped when that manuscript leaked online (she has since officially hosted those pages on her official website).

If Lionsgate and Summit is looking to continue the franchise, this may be the best route, or even better yet, let it go out on a high note, and end the way it was originally intended to.
