Bearded girl, monster, side show freaks and a big pharmaceutical are usually not the components of a cute and touching story, but Chimichanga is definitely that.

When a witch trades the bearded little girl a wagon and a “rock” for a few of her chin hairs (the last component for a gas relieving potion), the little girl Lula gets the better end of the bargain. The rock turns out to be a monster of some sort, and Lula takes responsibility of him. From there, she tries to adapt him to side show life, where the freaks are less than extraordinary, far closer to ordinary. Lula and Chimichanga live happily in their dying circus until a big bad pharmaceutical company gets their hands on the witch’s potion and need more of Lula’s beard to mass produce it.

The humor is light and carefree throughout, and the artwork is as fun and carefree as a circus environment should be. Never taking itself too seriously, Chimichanga is outrageously delightful.
