Shame DVD Review

Shame comes to Blu-ray and DVD today, and I’ll admit that I haven’t jumped on the Michael Fassbender train yet, but I have heard spectacular things about him, and about the movie in general. I gave a copy of this away earlier on the blog, so if you missed out, don’t forget to check on the blog, because we give a lot of stuff away! And if you entered, check to see if you won here.

When I pick up a film I rarely look at a rating unless I’m watching it with my child, but good golly, when they say NC-17 they seriously mean it here. I can’t complain, within the first three minutes you see every inch of Fassbender’s character, which is a regular occurrence as Brandon sleeps his way through call girls and masturbates.

Brandon is a sex addict whose obsession leads him to hire prostitutes, to pick up strange women on the subway, pleasure himself in the men's room at work, and watch oodles and oodles of pornography.
His sister on the other hand is a whole other ball of wax. Sissy is a broken soul, a hopeless dreamer, wasting her time and affection of the wrong people.

They’re really quite the pair of siblings, both dealing with childhood insecurities and issues in very different way. Nothing is said, but what is implied is horrifying. The film is titillating without being too dramatic. Shame is not for the light hearted, its dark and twisted, and more is hinted than revealed. There is a quiet intensity, that the film and score capture brilliantly, but at times the film feels like its moving at a snail’s pace. Though, for fans of Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, it should be a must, both actors deliver amazing performances.
