"Dark Phoenix" Review

The X-Men series has always been rich with relevant storytelling material. When films or television tell hyper-realistic stories of socially ostracised groups being subjected to violence discrimination, the people who experience those traumas in their day-to-day life are not able to enjoy those works of fiction with the same level of escapism that other entertainment media has. The X-Men are systematically oppressed and degraded by the social majority, non-mutants, who are regarded as the normative standard and hold all the government power and the resources that go with it. However, the X-Men also have extraordinary powers and seem larger than life while still being deeply human in the emotional struggles they go through. They're relatable to socially ostracised viewers and they are always the heroes of the story. This is the core of why the X-Men is so beloved to a diverse group of viewers.

As we all know, this is the end of the X-Men film series that has been running for almost twenty years. We still have The New Mutants to look forward to, if the studio would just hurry up and release it already, but this is the swan song for these core characters in their current form. Instead of taking the predictable route of having the X-Men fight yet another outside threat, be it another powered force of the human race at large, they must deal with a more dangerous side of Jean Grey and her powers.

Being that this is the end for these characters that fans have grown to love over the last twenty years, it's a nice choice to keep the focus on them. The story is an intimate exploration of not only the bonds that they've forged with one another but of how childhood trauma not only lingers but festers into adulthood when it's not properly dealt with. People tend to have a more clear understanding of physical trauma when it's external such as bruises, cuts, scars, or other things of that nature. What people don't always understand is that traumatic experiences, both physical or mental, can alter your brain chemistry which can in turn lead to a multitude of other problems. Sophie Turner researched certain psychological disorders to prepare for this portrayal and develop her characterisation.

What's important to understand about mental illnesses is that they can manifest because of trauma. When you experience something traumatic in life, be it physical or emotional, or both, it can alter your brain chemistry. Your brain is so crucial in dictating who you are and how you are as a person. People who have accidents where they get hit in the head, as an example, are experiencing another method of inflicting trauma on the brain. As a result, those people might undergo significant changes in their personality depending on which part of the brain is damaged.

Dark Phoenix effectively digs deep into Jean's traumas, and how being forced to confront them effects herself and her loved ones. Sophie Turner's performance is fantastic, and the other stand-out are James McAvoy Michael Fassbender, and even Nicholas Hoult. Since Jean is the character that's central to the story, her sickness and the damage it causes are the main driving forces of the story. The way Jean's relationship with Charles is explored is beautifully moving and exemplifies the recurring theme of 'found family' that's been so prevalent throughout the X-Men series. Charles is unwavering in stressing to Jean that she is not nor has she ever been something broken or wrong. Considering how long the X-Men series has been a vehicle for stories about discrimination and bigotry it's only natural to expand this to cover mental health, as it is another issue that remains highly stigmatised and makes people feel alone and lesser.

The other villain of the film is Vuk, who serves as an interesting addition to the story. She acts as a dual angel/devil-on-the-shoulder figure to Jean, with the sale tipping far more so in the direction of devil. There are always outside forces which pose threats to the X-Men and in addition to the rich character content Vuk facilitates for Jean, the alien force she's leading are the reason for some truly incredible action in the third act. Other mash-up/superhero films have displayed a propensity for spreading everyone out so the bond between them is not showcased during the bigger action sequences. Properly intertwining the actions of the X-Men during a fight scene shows that they trust each other, have a close bond, and in all likelihood a long history of training and going on mission together. Overall, Dark Phoenix is a truly fresh addition to the X-Men franchise, and an emotionally moving conclusion to the films.

Dark Phoenix is playing in cinemas worldwide.

Magnolia to Launch FRANK on iTunes and On Demand on Friday, September 5th

New York (September 4, 2014) – Magnolia Pictures announced today that they will be launching FRANK on iTunes and On Demand this Friday, September 5th.  Now in theaters across the country, FRANK is a charming comedy starring Michael Fassbender as an outsider rock musician who notably sports a giant paper-mache head that he never removes.

FRANK had its coming out party here in early August, where the cast members reunited for a performance of the climactic song from the film, “I Love You All”, at its premiere at the Westway club in NYC. The next night, they reprised their performance on the Colbert Report, head and all, following a very funny interview with Colbert and Fassbender.

Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, FRANK also stars Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: Episode VII) as Jon, a young wannabe musician who discovers he's bitten off more than he can chew when he joins a band of eccentric pop musicians led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank (Fassbender) and his terrifying sidekick, Clara (Maggie Gyllenhall). Frank’s uniqueness lies in the fact that he makes music purely for the joy of creating…and because he wears a giant fake head. After a rocky start, Jon ingratiates himself with the band members, and they retreat to a cabin in the woods to record an album. As his influence waxes, creative tensions mount, and the band’s entire raison d'être is called into question.

“A genuine original in a summer sea of sameness. A profound examination of what constitutes creativity and genius. A story about the perpetual tension between vision and mediocrity, integrity and celebrity. It couldn’t be more classic, or of the moment.” – John Anderson, Wall Street Journal

“Certified Fresh” by Rotten Tomatoes, and currently is rated 91% on the site, FRANK has opened major markets across the country to excellent reviews:

“Captivating. It’s like an album made up of B sides and lost demo tracks that you stumble across and can’t stop replaying.” – A.O. Scott, NY Times

“You’re in for something funny, touching and vital. A hymn to the healing power of art.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“Honest and affecting. Best of all, we get to witness Fassbender at full tilt.” – Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

FRANK will remain in theaters through September (complete list of bookings here), where it continues to perform strongly—grossing $23K at the Arclight in Los Angeles alone last weekend—while its expansion to iTunes and On Demand will make it available to virtually everyone in the US.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" Review!

X-Men: Days of Future Past brings together characters from the original X-Men film trilogy with the their younger counterparts in what is sure to be one of, if not the largest blockbusters of the summer. In an apocalyptic future, we find both the human and mutant populations on the verge of extinction. In a Terminator-like fashion, one must travel back in time to change certain events in order to save the world from certain destruction. Following the trend of all of the films in the franchise, Wolverine remains the film's centre point and he is tasked with doing so, given his regenerative abilities will ensure that the journey alone doesn't kill him. Hugh Jackman has yet again risen to the challenge of transforming himself physically into Wolverine, but more importantly, we see him having to develop into more than just a hot-head with a severe existential crisis. In meeting a young Charles Xavier, among others, he must provide guidance and council to a man who has always been the one providing it to others. Jackman hits these new notes well, and it's a welcome evolution to the character.

But if there were but one performance which I would commend above all others, it would be that of James McAvoy. This Xavier is one vastly different from the sophisticated gravitas of Sir Patrick Stewart and also from the rambunctious flirt seen in First Class. Here, we see Xavier as a self-medicating addict in the 1970's (complete with a terrible hairstyle and heinous outfits). McAvoy's performance holds the intensity and raw depth not often seen in blockbusters, but more so in smaller films that remain largely unnoticed until they come up from behind and sweep the awards shows.  In one scene, we see both Xaviers meet and much to McAvoy's credit, he steals the scene which is not an easy task when face-to-face with the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart.

The sheer scope of this film is incredible. It's evident that the budget was massive and all of that money was well spent. From special effects, to the costumes and make-up, everything about this film is visually strong. There's not one stand-out villain in the film because the characters and story demonstrate the blurring of morality where war and politics are concerned, as can be seen when simply looking back throughout history.

The standout sequence is that of Quicksilver's, although the blaring scientific inaccuracy of his listening to music whilst travelling faster than the speed of sound is cringe-inducing. Putting that aside, the rest of the sequence seems to have been inspired by films like Inception, with its creativity and attention to detail. Evan Peters also delivers solid comedy to the role and both he and the character have become fast fan-favourites.

The only weak point of the film is the fact that with so many characters present, not everyone gets fully utilised or developed in the story. It's understandable, as doing so would likely result in a 40-hour film. But given the success of the back and forth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe of stand-alone films for certain characters before reuniting as a group in the Avengers films, as well as the Wolverine films in the X-Men film franchise, one can only hope that more characters will get stand-alone films. Not only does it allow for greater character development often only obtained on television programs, I for one would like to see a stronger presence and utilisation of the POC X-Men. How is it that Halle Berry hasn't had a Storm film yet? The woman won an Oscar; she could handle leading a blockbuster just fine.

Prometheus Has Landed

Is Prometheus worth the wait?  Does it live up the hype?  This weekend hundreds of thousands of people will crowd theaters for Ridley Scott’s long awaited return to sci-fi with Prometheus.  For over a year fans have been trying to figure out if Prometheus is a prequel to Scott’s 1979 Alien…or not.  So is it, or isn’t it?  The film contains “strands of Alien’s DNA,” hints director Ridley Scott.  Which after seeing the movie, I find it’s the perfect description.
Prometheus is a prequel of sorts.  You don’t need to see Alien to enjoy this masterpiece, but for those fans of Alien, I think watching it again before Prometheus is an added bonus.

Greek legend tells us Prometheus was a God who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to man.  For punishment, he was bound to a rock for eternity.  Everyday an eagle would peck out his liver, and every day it would grow back, just to be pecked at again.  There’s a cycle, just as all things have a cycle.  Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron) states, “A king has his reign and then he dies.”  Again, it’s a cycle.  So, is the cycle of the Human race at an end?
Two scientists, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Dr. Charles Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green), find ancient drawings and carvings across Earth from different millennia and civilizations showing the same message or map.  The scientists take this as an invitation to find the origins of mankind.  A group of biologists, geologists, and others assembled by Weyland industries, which we now know from viral ad campaigns is the creator of the androids seen in all the movies in the Alien franchise, set out to find the “Engineers” of our race and end up finding much much more.

The crew finds large dome shaped caverns complete with a maze like network below.  Chilling events are set in motion after David, the android, played masterfully by Michael Fassbender, starts touching stuff.

David has an almost childlike quality.  He has no fear, no emotions, but has facial expressions are full of wonder and amazement. His mischievous actions could be taken as the inquisitiveness of a child, or programed orders.  Of course, we know the answer, but Scott likes to play with our minds.  Nevertheless, David accelerates things.
Meredith Vickers (Theron) is the company watchdog that actually seems to have a different agenda than the company; something new to the Alien franchise.  She doesn’t believe in sacrificing human life to fulfill someone else’s quest for knowledge.
I don’t think Prometheus lands on LV-426, the planet in Alien.  We do see in the many trailers that there is a ship, a chair, and an alien (affectionately named by fans the “Space Jockey”) that seem identical to the ones found by Dallas and his crew in Alien.  But Prometheus takes place roughly 30 years prior to the events in Alien and the planet just looks completely different to me.

But just like the magic of Alien, we don’t see much at first, but when we do…pooh man.  Scott lets us see ripples and dripping and melting and shadows, but saves the big stuff for later.  He smoothly progresses from tiny to small to large to big.  As David says, “Big things have small beginnings.”  By allowing the story to evolve this way, Scott keeps the main focus on the characters and how they handle evolving situations.  Even the questions constantly evolve, with most being answered with more questions.  It is really a philosophical and psychological thriller.

Scott also gathered a stellar cast (excuse the pun…I couldn’t help myself).  I mainly noticed the chameleon type actors he chose.  Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, and Michael Fassbender have all had recent films released where their characters are completely different from Prometheus’.  I didn’t watch Dr. Shaw and think she’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  It’s the same for Meredith Vickers and David; the actors morph themselves into different people.
Prometheus is beautifully written by Damon Lindelof & Jon Spaihts.  It delves into the quagmire of religious beliefs vs. scientific evidence, and the questions that linger.  Pay close attention to the opening scene, it’s brilliant.  In fact, Lindelof, Spaihts, and Scott ask the question, if was populated by an alien race, where does God fit in if anywhere?  Most questions are not answered.  They leave that up to us.

One such question could be about the beacon in Alien, thought to be an SOS, and the cave drawings in Prometheus, thought to be an invitation to find a civilization.  Some characters later believe they were warnings to stay away, but what if they were an invitation and an SOS to lure us in?  This is a type of the delicious questions you will have leaving the theater.
