Spike Scream Awards 2011 Recap
Spike knows how to do awards shows, from beginning to end the Scream awards are always lots of fun! And this year was no exception, even with its creeped out carnival backdrop.
Colin Farrell came out first reading his bromantic ode to a man full of swagger, everyone’s favorite hero: Robert Downey Jr. He presented him with the first spike of the night, and RDJ in turn presented the crowd with the World Premiere of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. This looks phenomenal, its lacking Rachel McAdams’s flair, and instead has Noomi Rapace, but I digress. Its not about the lovely ladies. Jude Law and RDJ have more amazing chemistry, and the action is intense. Consider me sold, as if there was any doubt with RDJ starring.
Dylan McDermott, with sweaty balls, seriously he mentioned it a few times, presented for Best Thriller. Limitless picks up the win. I haven’t seen it, it looks good, but I still don’t feel a need to see it. Ah, well. The always pretty Bradley Cooper accepts the award.
The gorgeous Amanda Heard presents for best supporting actor, where the phenomenal Peter Dinklage scores the win, as if there was a need for other nominees. Lets face it, Peter is beyond amazing and anyone up against him should just accept the fact that they’re about to lose. His head gave a speech, rising out of the water, since he was actually filming the next season of Game of Thrones.
Anna Torv gave the breakout performance male award to the extremely sexy Joe Manganiello, and I cannot honestly tell you if there were any other nominees. I knew Joe was going to win, and I guess anticipation makes me deaf. That man is beyond delish and then he growls and sends himself to whole new heights of sexiness. “Werewolves do it in the daylight,” and at night, and pretty much anytime they want. Go Team Alcide (sorry Eric, I still love you too).
Mary Elizabeth Winstead came out for Best Director announcing Darren Aronofsky for the Black Swan, which I still have not seen and I fully blame the creepy DVD cover.
The amazing Kate Beckinsale gave the ultimate villain award to none other than the man “who inspired more heavy breathing than Princess Leia in a gold bikini,” Darth Vader, whom George Lucas demonstrated has quite the blindspot. Future geeks donning the headgear beware!
Another world premiere, this time for Paranormal Activity 3. These guys always have some of the most disturbing trailers. Call me a sucker, I totally believe in ghosts, and haven’t brought myself to watch the second, but this one looks just as good.
The yummy Paul Wesley and Erika Christensen together present the award for Best Sci-fi actor: Dr. Who’s Matt Smith, and best comic book writer: Ed Brubald.
Kal Penn and John Cho, or Kumar and Harold as I always remember them, give the award for Comic Con Icon to voice over legend June Foray.
Another sexy werewolf take the stage, Tyler Posey announces best horror movie with Let Me In snagging the win. Chloe Grace Moretz accepts the award. She’s also the winner of the Best Horror Actress.
“Horror King” Quentin Tarantino gave the award for Best cinematic maverick to Nicholas Cage after showing a very nice sizzle reel of Cage’s most memorable moments. And then the world premiere of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was shown. I’ll be honest, while I like Nicholas Cage, I didn’t see the first Ghost Rider, and I don’t expect I’ll see this one either. For the perfect stage to show a preview for this type of movie, it relied solely on the coolness of the Ghost Rider look to sell it. Well, I’m not buying based on this.
Zoe Saldana presented for Best Sci-fi movie, and with the help of a Good Year Blimp Super8 was announced the winner. JJ Abrams collected the spike.
From Red Tails George Lucas, Cuba Gooding Jr, Nate Parker, and Elijah Kelley showed a preview of their new movie about the Tuskegee airmen. My first thought when the guys were introducing the movie, was did Cuba already do a movie about the Tuskegee airmen, and my second was this isn’t horror or sci-fi, but the movie looks awesome, the action sequences rocked. This is how to entice an audience, hope Ghost Rider was taking notice.
Badass Ron Perlman presented for Best TV show, most of my favorites where up against each other in this category. The nominees were Dr. Who, Game of Thrones, True Blood, Fringe, The Walking Dead. The extraordinary Game of Thrones wins with the outstanding Sean Bean and Lena Hedley on the Iron Throne to accept the spikes.
Bryce Johnson and Caity Lotz presented for most memorable mutilation. Piranha 3D was pretty much guaranteed a win with 2 nominations in this category. And sure enough, it won with girl scalped by motor boat. The girl’s head, scalped face and all, rose from the water and announced Piranha 3DD, as if one campy Piranha movie wasn’t enough they had to make another one with more boobs and David Hasselhoff, seriously. Ving Rhames is back, wielding guns for legs, as piranhas invade a water park, I assume from the preview. It plays up the camp, looks fun, I’m not mad about the sequel.
Chloe Grace Moretz comes back out to hand out the award for the ultimate scream. Could the girl be any cuter? She’s fantastic. The nominees are: Black Swan, Captain America : the first Avenger, Game of Thrones, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Super 8, Thor, True Blood, Walking Dead, X-Men: First Class. The winner was not a single movie, but an entire epic saga, the Harry Potter series. And to celebrate they cut to Samuel L. Jackson in New York surrounded by Potter fanatics. He introduces the amazing Daniel Radcliffe. After a very thankful speech there’s a preview for The Woman in Black. This preview looks not just good, but creepy as hell. I’m completely in, cannot wait for it!
Awarded earlier: Best Villain went to Ralph Finnes for Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter. He and his creepy beard gave an acceptance speech.
Mark Wahlberg handed out the award for most anticipated movie, which went to Batman: the Dark Knight Rise, which beat out Twilight: Breaking Dawn, The Hunger Games, The Avengers, The Amazing Spiderman, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon-Levitt accept the spike. I’m a little sad they couldn’t squeeze Tom Hardy on stage too, but then again there were already plenty of screams for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Hardy’s additional presence may have cause a riot.
Rainn Wilson closes the show with the final award of the night; the Scream visionary. Pee Wee Herman takes the win, riding out on his red bike.
Once again a great show. Below is the full list of winners, and if you want to see all the nominees as well check out http://www.spike.com/events/scream-awards-2011/voting
