The Thing: The Northman Nightmare

This serves as a prequel to the movie, which is set to hit theaters October 14th, and comes from the mastermind of Steve Niles. I admit I adore Niles’s other series 30 Days of Night, and Criminal Macabre and the Thing should be right up the same alley with its story derived from John Carpenter’s movie of the same name. But, does it live up to the classic?

The action starts quickly, with one of the men losing his hand. Little do any of them know the danger they’ve narrowly avoided, only to fall into another equally great one. Their spidey senses should have been tingling all over the place, I mean, where is the robot screaming “Danger, Will Robbinson, Danger” when you need him? Definitely not here, that’s for sure.
The group, while vigilant, are about to go up against a force none of them are prepared to meet.
The story is very fast paced. It explains little, but there is little that needs to be explained. Shapeshifters are badass, and humans are no match, but that doesn’t make it any less fun to read. And Dark Horse is offering it for free, so it’s an absolute steal and really there’s no reason not to snatch it up.
