Charlaine Harris on "Midnight, Texas" Adaptation for Television

Charlaine Harris is best known to television viewers for True Blood, an HBO series adapted from The Southern Vampire Mysteries that she wrote. Now the public will be treated to another romantic supernatural series that she wrote, Midnight, Texas. The series was brought to SDCC 2017, which is nothing new for Harris after all the visits True Blood had during its run.

Harris enters the process of having another of her properties adapted for television with considerably more experience this time around. "True Blood wasn't a big hit right away. It had to grow by word of mouth. So I had a little while to get used to it being on everybody's lips and then of course there people who just hated it. When I sold my house in Arkansas, they had it exorcised. I'm so bad! I felt pretty badass after that. I think I learned with True Blood, I was totally new to the industry, I had never met an actor, I had never met anybody like Alan Ball. He's a unique guy, one of a kind, I just think the world of him. But I had never met anyone in the entertainment industry before so I was terrified and that doesn't help. And now I feel just very causal about meeting people who are in entertainment and not being scared really helps."

Harris isn't involved much with the details of how her books are adapted to work for television, but Harris has no issues with this. "I'm not really involved because they have to make the decision that's right for television viewing. I made all the book decisions a hundred percent so I am glad to leave the making of the television show to them. They're the experts, I'm not, and I don't want to."

Midnight, Texas being adapted for NBC means a considerably less gratuitous approach to the violent and provocative aspects of the novels compared to True Blood. "David Janollari (executive producer) was very enthusiastic about the material and so was Monica. The first prerequisite is people who really love the material. I felt confident that they would stick to the spirit of the books and they have. I think that's really all I can ask. As for being a little less graphic, I'm kind of glad about that. I'm certainly no prude but sometimes on True Blood, as lovely as those people are, really it was the graphic quality of the killing scenes that bothered me a little bit more. So I wanted to cover my eyes. For NBC, it's pretty much pushing the envelope, though. I've seen the first six episodes and I'm still happy about it!"

Harris now refrains from projecting much when waiting to see how this new adaption turns out. "I don't have expectations anymore because I'm waiting to be informed. I'm waiting to have that experience. Entertain me! Show me what you've got! And they have, I've been very pleased with it. It's a very good show."

Midnight, Texas offers a new experience for Harris as a writer in that the series mixes events from different books into the first season, as opposed to adapting the content of just one book per season. "That was really new to me. But there again I thought, well there are only three books. That's okay with me, really. It's not like they have to be sequential to make sense. They don't. So far I'm going,  'Okay, that was from book three, I think that was from book two,' but okay, it's all good."

With just three books worth of material to pull from and uncertainty about the longevity of the television series, which has only just begun airing, there is a possibility of the show-runners having to create more substantial quantities of completely new events and characters. "I don't doubt that Monica can make up enough good stuff to fill it up. I have no doubts about her creativity at all. I really hope the cast and crew, I hope they're all employed for many years."

Harris hopes that having her work adapted for live-action hasn't changed her style of writing. "I don't think you can write thinking, 'Maybe this will be on TV someday,' and try to make your book more action-figure type than it would necessarily be. That's not my job. My job is to write the best book I can, fulfill my contract with the reader, which is to provide them with the best book, the most entertaining book I can write. Anything after that is beyond my control."

Harris no longer takes part in the practice of imagining certain actors to portray the characters she has created. "I kind of gave that up along with True Blood too. I want them to cast the best person for the role, not the one who looks most like the character in the books and inevitably, I would think about someone who looked like the character as I described them. I think you have to be able to see beyond that to the actor who can carry that character for several seasons if need be and I hope they will have to."

Harris is also full of praise for the Midnight, Texas cast. "I'm on board! Of course Peter was in True Blood also and so I knew he was good and he's got that gravitas. I'm so impressed with Yul as the Reverend. There again he's not the stick-like elver man I described but he's got the presence, huge presence. Oh and Jason as the angel, oh my gosh! He's so good. They're all good! Dylan and Parisa and Sarah and of course François, I really think they've gotten a really cohesive group that all stick up for each other."

The plot and greater themes of Midnight, Texas are highly relevant to the currently tumultuous sociopolitical climate of the world. It's a strength that gives the content greater weight and a means of connecting to the audience. "I think you write what's really pressing in you. I think the fact that people need to band together to present a united front is pretty important, especially now. When [I] write, I always have a message. Whether people get it or not is kind of up to them. If people just want to read the books for entertainment, that too is fine cause books are entertainment. I'm in the entertainment industry anyway. But I do have a message and I really hope it resonates with people and it gives them a minute to think about it. I'm not a preacher. I think that people who feel like they're outcasts or different or not mainstream for whatever reason can find family and likemindedness with each other. That's not exactly a new or startling message but it seems like a message that needs repeating."

True Blood Recap S0704: Death Is Not The End

Jackson gets a call from Sookie. She breaks the news of Alcide's demise to his daddy, who takes it hard. Jason has to make an even harder call to his former best friend Hoyt, who doesn't remember him after Jessica's little mind wipe. Jason tells him that his mother was killed by a vampire, and slips up by calling him "Bubba." Jackson plans to come in a couple of days after tying up loose ends, and Sookie warns Jackson not to come at night. Jackson confesses that Alcide loved the fuck out of her. When Hoyt comes in, Jason tells him to call the station, and he'll provide him an escort. Jason breaks down a bit more, Hoyt thanked him for callling to tell him about his mother. Sookie tells Jason to man up, he's the law with Andy out of commission with Holly. She wants to cry too, but there's no time for tears. Big boy pants on, it's go time. Sam comes to collect them for their next task.

Cue the Intro. Everytime Bad Things plays it'll be bittersweet knowing that its all ending.

On the plane Eric feeds off his very willing stewardess. When he hears the destination, he has the plane's flight course changed. Eric wants to go to Shreveport much to Pam's dismay. Pam tells him that there is nothing left there for them. Eric wants to see Willa before he dies, and Victoria the stewardess is horrified to hear that she is now a Hep V carrier. Eric feeding from her thigh should have been totally worth losing her job. She tells the captain the new destination, and Pam and Eric take a trip down memory lane. Pam really hates Shreveport.

1986. The Magister arrives, pleased to catch up to Eric and Pam. Pam is snarky as ever. He introduces himself, and sentences them for that little incident in France. He gives them a small business to run. Eric would rather take a stake to the heart. He was warned, but he didn't listen, and now they get a grand tour. To Pam's horror it's a video store. They both look stunned. It has all the genres, and candy to boot, but they aren't impressed. What's to later be the dungeon, holds the largest porn collection. There's even a small tunnel thats a part of the underground railroad. And better yet, Eric gets the title of Sheriff of Area 5. The Authority doesn't trust Eric, but they can keep him close. The Magister warns that they are being watched day and night. He tosses the keys to Pam, and she lets them bounce off her chest.

Sam, Jason and Sookie head over to Andy's. Sookie checks in on Colby and Lisa, Arlene's children who are no longer teacup humans. Lisa is a little mad with how everyone has been treating them since their mother was taken. Sookie isn't sugar coating things for them, but she does reassure them that their mother is fighting to get back to them. She promises to get her back, and she's going to use Holly to find her.

Andy tries to turn away Sam and Jason at the door. Holly remember anything, doesn't want to remember. Sookie wants to make her. She made a promise to the children and she plans to keep it. Against Andy's better judgement he lets them in. Holly has been better, so has Sookie. She's not ok, but she has to be. Sookie asks her the last thing she remembers. Holly remembers the mixer, and then nothing until she was found. The memories aren't lost just locked away. Holly is scared to remember, but she's willing to do it to help Arlene. Sookie takes her back to the woods, and she freaks out when she remembers the vampires feeding on her. Sookie gets flashes. She takes her back to Fangtasia, and Sookie sees that Arlene, Nicole, and Jane are still alive, but Kevin didn't make it. Holly is a crying mess, and Andy is left to pick up the pieces. Sam tahnks Holly for what she did.

Sam drives erratically, and Jason tries to pick his brain. Sam is tired of waiting around, wondering if Nicole and the baby are okay, and there's no way for him to know for sure. Sam turns the truck around, headed for Fangtasia instead of Rosie's. Jason is forced to pull his gun out on Sam to get through to him. They can't go against the Hep V vampires, they need their own Vampire muscle, which means they have to wait until the sun goes down. Sam pulls over, he can't be the one driving away from them.

Jessica still isn't healing, and James tries to talk some sense into her. She has to eat, she isn't healing because she isn't eating. James loves her, and he gets Bill against her protests. If she won't eat for him, maybe she will for Bill, or at the least he can force her to. She hasn't eaten in about ten weeks. Bill asks if her hunger protest is because of what happened with the fairies. Things are good between Jessica and Adilyn, she admits that she's been protecting her, but not feeding off her. Jessica asks who Bill has been feeding off of. Sookie arrives, and adds to Jessica's mortification. Bill tells Jessica that she must eat, and Sookie offers to feed her. Jessica is horrified, Sookie is a fairy and she shouldn't trust Jessica with her blood, but Sookie trusts her. She sends the boys from the room for a little girl talk. Jessica thinks she knows what Sookie is going to say. Sookie tells her to eat. She doesn't give a shit about the reason why  Jessica isn't eating. The three dead fairies are the tip of the iceberg, and the bodies are piling up. Sookie has been god to Jessica over the years, and right not she needs her help to save her friends in Fangtasia. Jessica agrees to eat, just not Sookie. Sookie tells the boys to call Lafayette.

Past. 1996. Ginger strolls into the video store. She's looking for a few good vampire flicks, and Pam is pleased with her taste. Ginger is taking a college course on equality and using vampires and their treatment in cinema. Eric arrives, and literaly takes Ginger's breath away entering to a little Garbage "I Would Die For You." She's surprised to hear that he's the proud owner of the little shithole she happens to adore. After inquiring on their relationship status (permantly off since aquiring said shithole) she snaps at the chance to work there.

Sam and Jason pay Rosie a visit. She's suspicious, worried that she's under arrest. Sam offers to forget about the previous night, and that puts Rosie on edge, but she lets them in when Jason says he needs to talk to her about Kevin. Rosie refuses to sit until Jason breaks the news that he's gone. She wants to see Kevin's body, but they haven't recovered it yet. Sam tells her that they found Holly, that she and the others were being kept at the vampire bar. Rosie asks that they make the ones who did this pay, and they plan to when the sun goes down.

Bill will call all the vampires that he can, but warns that they will be vastly outnumbered when they go into Fangtasia. Many vampires have been killed, and the ones remaining may not come, since they have nothing to gain. Sookie asks why Bill is willing to go then, and he tells her he owes her everything. She offers him lunch.

Lafayette arrives, and notes that Jessica looks less than fabulous. Jessica wants to eat, but she feels empty inside. Lafayette shoos James from the room. Lafayette tells her that she has to eat, and he's goign to feed her. Jessica worries about immortality and needing to eat innocent people to survive. Good thing Lafayette is far from innocent. He confesses that he killed the man that he loved, that he still hasn't forgiven himself, but he has to keep on trucking. Jessica can be a whole lot deader than she is now, and he coaxes down her fangs. She falls down onto him a bit roughly, but begins to feed and heal.

Past. 2006. Ginger is looking more fangbanger than book worm now. She's even driving a hearse. Best of all, she's got Eric's future throne. She's late, and Pam isn't pleased. She asks Pam to guess what she's found, all Pam sees is a shitty chair. But with vampires out of the closet, Ginger has big dreams of a gorgeous vampire bar. She wants to expand, and place on the stage the throne. Porn is their biggest money maker because Sex sells, and Eric Northman is pure sex. Pam sees Ginger's vision of Fangtasia, and she likes it. Fangtasia is born, and after paying Ginger maybe the only compliment ever she takes the idea for her own, and wipes Ginger's memory. Now, Eric delights in Pam's bitchy confession. He still loves her.

The group of unaffected vampires ready to raid Fangtasia is very small. Michael, Keith, Violet, James, Jessica and Bill are all that are joining Jason, Sam, and Sookie. Jason tries to give a rousing speech, but bringing up the storming of the beaaches of Normandy doesn't make any of them ready to to storm into battle. A lot of lives were lost that day. Eric arrives, asking if it is true that Bill wrote a book, and claims to not be an asshole anymore. The gang's all here. Bill notices that Eric is sick. Sookie goes to see who is at the door, and flies into Eric's arms. She too sees that he's sick, and she's upset. Pam reminds him that they still have a Christian to kill. That doesn't tear his attention away, so Pam reminds him about Willa. Eric calls his progeny to him, and she's less than pleased to hear her master.

Bill leaves Sookie alone with Eric. They've both gotten tthemselves in messes since they parted company. She tells him that he can't die on her, and he asks how she is. She tells hiim that her boyfriend died, and he's surprised to hear that she hooked up with Alcide. He gave her her house back so she could take her life back, and he asks how a werewolf is doing that. She tells him that he died just that morning. He takes her into his arms, comforting her, telling her of his adventures. His sunbathing in the Alps set off an avalache and wiped out a small village. He went to South America, to Africa, Spain. He thought he would see the world one last time. He wipes a tear from her cheek, asking again what type of trouble that she's in.

Pam thinks the plan of storming the entrance is idocy. Willa arrives, pissed as ever, and Pam points the way to Eric, who's still inside with Sookie. Eric compliments his progeny, but she's not pleased. She doesn't care what Sookie needs, and if he wants her help then they're talking now. Eric uses the maker command to put his abandoning her aside for now. Eric plans to join the calvary, which doesn't please Pam one bit.

A rat navigates the tunnels, and the ladies squeel about the rat, who transforms into Sam. Arlene has a hard time wrapping her mind around the whole rat thing, but Sam tells her he'll explain later, right now they have to prepare for their vampire rescuers.  Arlene is worried since vampires but them in their current situation, but Sam reminds her that these vampires are good. Nicole begs him to hurry, and Arlene begs him not to turn back into a rat, but he does. The ladies are filled with hope that they may actually make it, but that hope is short lived, as one o the H vamps comes down.

Eric struggles to break through the wall. Bill asks to do it, and smashes through with one blow. Poor Eric is getting weaker. Sam gives the good news, he found the ladies. The vampires prepare to go in, and Pam stops Eric from going. He needs to conserve his strength, she insists. Eric is left to protect Sookie. Pam and the other vampires use their super speed to get to the girls, but one is missing.

They already have Arlene upstairs. Bill tells the others to get the two women to safety, and he'll go up after Arlene, who lets loose a banshee scream. Pam doesn't really like him, but she gives him some advice, don't be a hero.

Bill finds Arlene surrounded and being fed on. Eric knocks on the door, he tells them that he use to be sheriff of the area and he's diseased as well. They don't care, and don't wish to let him in until they get a whiff of what he's brought with him. One asks Sookie what she is, and she tells them that she's Eric's.

The group of dumb rednecks are planning something bad. They cannot believe that Rosie let Jason and Sam into her home. She claims a lapse in judgement as they ready their moltov cocktails in the car. They're crashing the Fangtasia party.

One of the Hep V vampires really wants a taste of Sookie, in a nasty place. Sookie sasses them, and they drop fang. Eric coos at them. He'll share, but Sookie is special. They won't drink her blood like the others, but sip it like a nice glass of wine. The H vamps are chomping at the bit, the other vamps are in place. Eric asks if one of them likes it rough, and he wonderrs what sort of a question that is. Beofre the vampires can attack, the rednecks have arrived and cause a whole lot of trouble. Violet gets Jason out, and the H Vamps goes to attack the rednecks, killing many of them. Fangtasia is burning. Sookie goes to Arlene, she needs to feed off a uninfected vampire, and Eric goes to find one in the fray outside. Bill stakes an H Vamp that was looking to ambush Eric, proving he's no longer an asshole. Pam puts out the flames in her club. A redneck goes to light the place up again, and Pam puts a stop to it. Before Bill can give Arlene his blood, he has to run to Jessica's rescue. Sookie sends Eric off again for a healthy vampire. Arlene sees Terry, and Sookie cries trying to get her friend to hold on. Sookie sees Terry too. Before an H Vamp can attack Sookie and get the drink that he desires Jason taakes care of him. A healthy Keith arrives and feeds Arlene as she and Terry catch up a little, talking about the kids. Terry tells her that she should stay, and she agrees. Arlene comes back tot he land of the living and meets her savior.

The rednecks and H Vamps are all gone or dead. Eric is missing. Pam freaks out a little, looking for him, and finds him snaking on Rosie, which is really better than she deserves.

Eric comes back in, and sees Sookie comforting Arlene. Without more than a little nod Eric leaves her.

True Blood Recap S07E03: Fire In The Hole

In LA, Sarah Newlin, or rather New-me finds her new self through a little yoga, meditation, and rocking some brunette locks. That’s great and all, but that little intro was a little overly long, we’ve only got some many minutes left. It’s time for some bad things.

Pam questions how long Eric has been sick, and he’s slow to respond. It’s been about a month since he’s been in St. Peteresburg, and Pam really hates the Russians. Eric feigns that he didn’t know Pam would come looking for him, as if. But he kept on moving to avoid detection, but she outwitted him, only because he’s unwell he tells her. She breaks the news to him that she felt Tara meet the true death while she was in Morocco, and all he can do is ask if she played the bucket game, which she did. He likes that game, but he’s such a Debbie downer, totally un-Eric Northman like. Pam isn’t ready to throw in the towel on him yet. Godric, Nora, and soon Eric too will die.

Flashback. He remembers a time in Rhone, France 1986. He seduced a girl in a vineyard. She thought she was seducing him. Sylvie knew what he was, and she liked it. She gave herself to him freely amongst her father’s wine vines. It was the first time he met Nan from the Authority. She got an eyeful, and although she had heard rumors she was still impressed by his… height. In private, she brought to him charges, failure to register with his sheriff, failure to pay taxes. Pam instantly dislikes her, although Nan thinks that under different circumstances they could have been friends. Nan tells them that they cannot be in hiding when they’re biting and fucking under the moonlight, and to get a room. Nan also tells them of Tru-blood, and mainstreaming is soon to be a reality. It’s big business and big money, so everyone has to fall into line. Although Pam understands, Eric would rather play with Sylvie. Nan isn’t so pleased with Eric’s answer, and although he tells Sylvie not to worry Pam sees plenty to worry about. Pam wants to leave immediately, but Eric has other ideas. Eric doesn’t like Pam’s tone, and he puts his foot down. Side with daddy, no matter what.

Now, a very wet Alcide finds the house empty. Sookie has flown the coop. He uses his super sniffer to find Sookie, which leads him straight to Bill’s door. Alcide kicks the door in, knowing that Sookie was there. Sookie and Bill are driving. Werewolves may be the best trackers, but Bill covered their tracks, and they have a pretty good head start. Bill asks if its too late for him to talk her out of her crazy plan, and it looks like that’s the case. Alcide slides into his wolf fur, and takes off after his stupid lady love. Sookie asks Bill why he can’t feel her anymore. She thought that after she had his blood it was forever. After feeding all the vampires in camp he was completely drained, and only Jessica and James feeding him brought him back. He has a clean vampire slate, how very convenient. He’s not the same vampire who did all the horrible things to her he says, although he has the memories, and Sookie seems satisfied with the answer. Bill tells her that if they are to go through with the plan then she has to take his blood or he won’t be able to help her. She agrees, but while he starts to enjoy the sucking, she reminds him that she has a boyfriend, which makes his fangs retract instantly.

Wade wonders if his brother Rocky is okay. While Adilyn is sure of Rocky, she isn’t so sure if his mother is okay. But Adilyn tells him a secret to cheer him up, that they made out once, but a vampire glamoured it out of him. He thinks it’s the best news he’s heard and when he tries for a 2.0 version, Jessica arrives on the scene, with Andy pulling up the rear. Adilyn asks that she not tell her dad what she was about to do, but there are bigger things to worry about. Andy wants to know who did this to her, and Wade tells him that they tried to stop the mob, but they took all the guns and ammo. The whole town has gone mad, and although Wade wants to protect Rocky, Andy tells him that they’re all in trouble. The mob is after anyone who’s different than they are.

Sam pour out his soul to the Reverend of the horrors he saw in the neighboring town. Reverend Daniels tells Sam that he’s going to get Nicole back but that he has to have faith. Sam tells him that they all had faith, and it got them no where. The Reverend tells him whether he sees death coming or not, spending all your time waiting for it isn’t a life worth living. Willa flashes in, trying to get to the Reverend ahead of Lettie Mae. She tells him that she’s freaking out again, that she gave her her blood. Lettie Mae is seeing Tara again. Willa explains that she was hurt, and she didn’t know what else to do. Reverend Daniels asks everyone to leave while he tries to get control of his wife.

Sam rides with Matt, who’s quite a little chatterbox. On the way home they run into the town mod blocking the road. Maxine stands out front, everyone has their gun raised. Sam asks what they’re doing, and Vince answers that they’re taking their town back. Sam’s secret is out of the bag, used as fuel to their fire, and when Sam points out that he cannot believe Kenya is a part of this craziness, it gets turned into a race thing. Sam tries to appeal to Rocky, that he’s working on getting his mom back, but one of the mob points out that they’re safer with their guns than with some fag vampire. Matt tries to stick up for himself, and Vince shoots him, killing him. Matt didn’t deserve that. Vince names Sam the devil, accusing him of tricking the people. He tells Sam to go home, or better  yet to leave Bon Temps for good cause he’s the mayor now. Sam isn’t laying down though, he’s the law there, and he takes off in the form of an owl.

Oh, no. Jason has been thinking again. If they make it through this, he asks Violet if she will have a baby with him, or rather adopt. Violet bristles, but Jason goes on. A man isn’t nothing without a family. Violet is speechless, and when she finally does open her mouth its nothing but scorn. She calls him a girl for getting sentimental, that in her day a town of dead was nothing, the men didn’t feel anything because they were warriors. Jason breaks it to Violet that he’s a modern man, he thinks and he feels. Violet thinks that he use to be, that he may have been broken when he was thrown in her cell but he was still a real man. Andy and Jessica come knocking, and Violet tells them to fuck off, but they’re not taken aback by her bark. Jason tells them to come in, and they do. Violet singles out Jessica, pinning her to the wall, reminding her that its her house. Andy gives Jason the update on Vince and his band of idiots. They have all the guns, and Kenya has gone to the dumb side. Jessica tells him that Adilyn is worried that they’re after Sookie. Andy leaves Adilyn and Wade at Jason’s with explicit instructions, they are not to open the door or go outside. Violet makes Jessica a deal that they’ll call a truce until they find Sookie. Jessica is fine with that as she wasn’t aware that they still had an issue. Someone please stake Violet already. Her death is one I deeply desire. Jason grabs his gun and he’s all set.

Lafayette has a one man dance party, which is cut short by James knocking at his door. James has come back for some weed, but Lafayette has none left. He offers him some pills, but James can’t swallow. James is looking to forget his beautiful redhead problem. They live together, they even occasionally have sex, but she’s just not there, and he wants more. Lafayette asks if he remembers the last pill he took, and he does. James reminisces about his last tuinol. Lafayette plans to mix up his own concoction, and once he’s swallowed for James, then they can both party.

At Fantasia, the body count is sky rocketing. They’re down to 4 ½ victims left, or two days. They’re going to have to go back out to hunt, or they’re all going to die. They’re weak, and the humans are being protected by vampires now, but they have little choice, they have to eat every hour. They’ll bring a snack out to hunt with. Holly tries to invoke a protection spell, but the lead vampire puts a stop to it, and takes volunteers Holly for their snack.

Bill understands the plan, but thinks its shaky at best he tells her up above in a tree. Sookie is open to a better one, but she reminds Bill that this plan is half his. He said no such thing, but she reminds him that the first time they went to Fangtasia he called her vampire bait, which isn’t something a girl forgets. That’s not what he meant, and she knows that, but now she’s just fulfilling her fate. He asks if they take the bait back to where the other are being held, does she want him to bring Alcide along to find her. She wants him to bring Alcide and anyone else willing to help. She hopes that there are a whole lot of people that need rescuing. He asks if she loves Alcide, and she tells him its none of his business. Bill wants to be friends though, and friends talk. Sookie admits that Alcide wants kids. He asks if that’s what she wants. When she doesn’t answer he tells her that when they were together, and she interrupts. She loves Alcide she really does, but she fears that she doesn’t love him as much as he loves her, and she knows she should because he’s decent, and handsome, grounded and good. But when they say I love you she can hear it in his voice and in his thoughts that he means it more than she does and that makes her feel awful. Love isn’t always equal Bill admits, and maybe that she’ll grow to love him more. She’s settle for him loving her a little less.

Jessica, Andy, Jason and Violet head out to look for Sookie. Jason gets her voicemail, worried since they stopped by her house and found the front door open. They come upon Sam’s truck. They get out to look around. The mob makes their presence known. Andy asks where the mayor went, and they tell him that he flew away, but Vince asks what he can do for them. Unless they can un-lock up the Sheriff’s daughter, or unsteal their guns, Jason just wants them out of the way or he can practice his shooting skills on them. Kenya complains that Adilyn struck her with lightening. Andy is a proud papa over it, but that’s besides the point. He wants through. The mob plans to hold their ground. Maxine guns for Jessica. She’s still upset that Hoyt left her, and she shoots Jessica in the arm. Violet rips her heart out, and everyone is kind of shock. The mob breaks apart, and scurries away. Violet goes to fetch Rocky for Andy, alive on his orders, and Jason goes to see why Jessica isn’t healing.

Holly sits in the middle of the HVamp hunting pack. They tell her to stay still, to say nothing. A pair take the two that they’ve found while the rest go looking for more.

At Lafayette’s he and James sit in a drug haze listening to music, enjoying the bass. James says goodbye to the past, since now is all that matters.

Alcide scours the woods. Sam catches up to him and the two shift back into their luscious human skin. Alcide tells him that Sookie is missing, that he lost her scent at Bill’s house. Two of the mob members fidget with their guns, and take a pop shot at the pair as they shift and run off.

Sookie sharpens a stick, waiting for her prey. She thought she smelled special, but so far no one is taking the bait. Bill assures her that she does. Sookie asks if Bill has ever been to Six Flags. She describes one of the rides there, and although immortal, Bill thinks it would scare him to death. Sookie tells him that it wasn’t the fall that was the scary part, but the waiting. You knew you were going to fall, it was just a matter of when. That’s exactly what this feels like she tells him. He tells her she should try to go to war, but this is war she reminds him.

1862 Bill’s daughter Sarah doesn’t want to take the picture, but her mother tells her that its for her father while he’s away. He asks what she’s frightened of, she doesn’t want him to leave. She asks why if he’s coming home why he needs the photograph. Bill wants the photo since it would be better to have something rather than nothing at all. Although the photos are expensive, Bill asks for one of him and his daughter for her to keep. Mr. Fortenberry takes the Compton family photo second.

Sookie stabs herself bringing Bill out of his memory. Danger Whore is sick of waiting. She makes the announcement that she tastes like sunshine and flowers and she’s right there.

Reverend Daniels finally has Lettie Mae calmed down. Willa wonders if she burned herself on purpose. He asks if she’s hungry, but she doesn’t want to be an inconvenience. He’s willing to open a vein for her though. She asks if he’s sure, being a reverend and all, but he’s sure. She hesitates, before taking her meal. He tells her that he moved to this town after the worse period of his life. He and his first wife lost their daughter six months prior. His first wife strayed and he lost all faith in god, his wife and self. His congregation would come check on him and he would pretend he wasn’t there. He hid afraid someone would talk to him. One morning he woke up put on his collar and headed out to the boarded up church outside. On the steps he saw a beautiful woman clutching a bottle of Captain Morgan. She told him that she had been waiting for him. Everyone said that he saved Lettie Mae, but she saved him just as much. Willa finishes her meals. Reverend Daniels points out that there is no liquor in the house, because Lettie Mae is a good woman, but she has a disease that’ll eat up booze, pills, drugs, gambling, sex, or vampire blood. Willa is a nice girl, and he’s so very sorry for all she’s been through, unfortunately though to Lettie Mae she looks like a bottle of Captain Morgan’s and he can’t have her around anymore. Lettie Mae manipulated her once, and she’ll do it again. Willa understands, but worries who will protect them. God will. Reverend Daniels thanks Willa for all that she has done, but he rescinds her invitation.

James wakes up, up Lafayette is slow to wake. James worries that he OD’d on him. He didn’t. Lafayette teases that James was worried about him, thinks its cute. James offers to fix his neck for him, and Lala lets him. With a quick bite of his fingers, and a little rubbing of his neck, Lafayette has to wonder if James is grooving on him. Lala didn’t misread the signals, but James maintains that he’s with Jessica.

Past, Pam feeds on some French food. A troop of sword carrying men arrive. Eric screws Sylvie in the vineyard when Pam interrupts. The men have Pam. The man in charge likes what he sees in Sylvie, and orders her to be taken. When Eric struggles, they threaten Pam. They’re from the Nakamoro corporation, the Tru-blood makers, and Eric understands the point. He will be more careful in the future. One of the women have to die, and Eric get to choose. Eric offers the man money, offers to double, triple the money, but he’s not taking it. Eric offers himself up instead, but the Authority wants him alive. Eric chooses Pam, and Sylvie gets a sword through his body. The men take silver chains to Eric and drag him away.

Now. Pam asks if Eric contracted the virus on purpose. Not on purpose, but he didn’t tread with caution either. Pam tells him that with an ample blood supply vampires are living longer and longer, and a cure is being worked on. She will help keep him well. He asks why, and she asks if he regrets the choice he made that night. He made the only choice that he could. She asks him not to make her watch this as he watched Godric. He tells her that she is free to leave as blood tears fall. For more than a thousand years the world has been his oyster, and he’s lost the taste for oysters. He tells her again to go. Pam rises to leave, but she stops. She tells him that Sarah Newlin still lives, and she’s still out there. No one has seen her, she’s in hiding somewhere. That has his attention. Eric rises, and wants to go find her.

At the moment Newme is screwing her yogi. She’s riding him hard, but he wants to climax together. She follows his instructions to fruitation.  He has made it his life’s work to steer his students to the right path, never thinking that a student could show him the path. She came five months ago thinking that life on earth was an audition to get into heaven. He tells her that there is no life on earth, there is only now, and now he tells her to go pick a nice bottle of red. She leaves bed. Outside walk the guys with swords and guns. Newme is in the cellar picking out her bottle of red while the guru is asked if he knows Sarah Newlin. At sword point he tells them that he does know her, but he will not give her up. They kill him, and she watches his blood creep into the room.

Bill alerts Sookie that a human approaches. It’s Holly. Sookie is happy to see Holly, but she doesn’t know where she’s been, she’s in a daze. Bill is taken by surprise by the HVamps. Luckily Alcide, Sam, Jason, Andy, Violet and Jessica are there. They take out the vampires around Sookie. Alcide asks Sookie what the hell she was thinking, but he doesn’t really want her answer. Sam unchains Bill. Alcide gives her the once over, asking for help to wash her off , which Violet takes care of while he give Bill the third degree for going along with her stupid plan. Bill has known Sookie long enough not to try to make her change her mind. Alcide tells him to tell him about Sookie like he doesn’t know her and he’ll kill him. Gunshoots ring through the air. Packmaster down, I repeat Packmaster down. Alcide is riddled with bullets. Jason and Andy shoot at some stupid rednecks, but its too late the damage to the beautiful flesh is done. Jessica offers to turn him, but Sookie refuses. She’s been down that road before, and Alcide is gone. It was Lou, and Andy leaves him to die as Sookie cries over her wolf.

I thought I was prepared for it all to end, for everyone to die. I couldn’t have been more wrong. That death was a low blow. Although I get Alcide had to die to make way for the Bill and Sookie ending that they seem intent on ramming down our throats making him go out like that was just wrong. And with the death of Alcide, another item on our wishlist goes up in smoke.
