The world of Orchid is always surreal and visceral, its primeval and just plain brutal.
Orchid’s world, lets face it sucked before she met Simon, and since, well, it hasn’t gotten any better. Her mother is dead, and she and her little brother, Yehzu are being carted away to be sold, if they’re lucky, and Simon just won’t shut up. It’s almost more than Orchid can take.
But the world away from the humans isn’t exactly welcoming either, and the rag tag crew of Orchid, Yehzu and Simon don’t stand much of a chance of surviving on their own, even if Simon does still possess China’s crazy magic mask.
Morello’s story is good, and always a little heartbreaking, showing the darkness of man. The story is starting to ramp up, and the little bits of world building thrown in, enhance instead of hinder the story. It’s a very good way of story telling, which keeps the story fresh, and welcoming to new readers and those already familiarized with the world of Orchid.
