Tim Seeley, the mastermind behind Hack/Slash (one of my favorite comics) brings a new series to Dark Horse with the Occultist.

The world of the Occultist immediately opens to the door to crazy. Beck finds that his world of new age magic leads to a very bad day for himself. Robert doesn’t find the answers he’s looking for only more questions, and his day only looks to be getting worse. Eilat and Pandora enter a uneasy partnership to take down a big prize, and they’re not the only ones after it. Sexy Detective Melendez comes for an interrogation, and winds up in the middle of something she never imagined existed.

The world building and character introductions take up most of this first issue, but it opens the way for the fantastical ride that Seeley is known for delivering. I don’t get his green hand, and the back story is sure to come, and answers for questions like what the heck is the sword exactly, likely to be answered. For a first outing it manages to whet the appetite, and I’ll wait for a few more issues before making any final decisions, but so far I'm loving what I'm seeing.
