Kim Dickens & Colman Domingo on "Fear The Walking Dead" Themes and Character Journeys (Interview)

With "Fear The Walking Dead" on mid-season hiatus, the cast and crew descended on San Diego Comic Con to discuss how the series has progressed in it's journey and evolved over the seasons.

"Thematically, one of the things season three is about is resources and appropriation of resources and land, and specifically re-appropriation. That's something about the apocalypse, it's wiped away existing borders, many of which were put in place through violence and another theme of this season which is the building and rebuilding of civilization," says the show's producer.

"For Madison, she's definitely become more of a merciless character," says Kim Dickens. "In the beginning, she's probably a merciless high school counselor. She was really beholden to her morality and her compassion and her heart. By season three, I think she realises the currency is more brutality when required. Her main goal throughout has been to survive and to protect her family and now, it's at a higher cost. I think Madison has been quick to realise that."

The characters have struggled to find a place to call home since the apocalypse began, as each place they've stopped has had something go wrong, thus forcing them to move on to somewhere else, something Colman Domingo spoke on. "I think that's always the hope. I think that's exactly the nature of all of these characters, that you're constantly going to this new place and you're like, 'We're gonna rebuild and build here,' and then as you see, it will fall apart. Great civilisations always come tumbling down in some way. I think that's the nature of humanity and that's what we're exploring in the show is we're always hopeful and seeking this place that we can build on. Madison said it so clearly in this season, 'We can thrive here. We can make something of this.' Just like we tried to do in the hotel, we see how well that went, we definitely tried to do that on the boat, we see how well that went. We're constantly going to be searching cause I think that's just the nature of who we are as humans."

Colman Domingo's Victor Strand has experienced a compelling journey with highs and lows surrounding love, loss, and the will to survive. "When I first was engaging with Victor Strand in season one, I loved the fact that he was this mysterious man of means, a self-made man, the things that they would tell me about him. Then season two was all about his deconstruction and I feel like it was also a deconstruction of Western civilisation in many ways, what he represented and the things he was all about. He had to take stock and maybe as the world has taken stock in who they are and getting back to basics. I think that season three has been a journey for him to go off on his own to figure that out and hopefully merge the two in some way, to take the skills that he knew, that he could build and rebuild on. He just didn't know how. It's funny, there were times every so often, I was confused with what I was doing and I would call Dave up [on] how I'm playing this character, someone who I thought was this. But I thought, 'Oh that's a great journey for this man, to become a bit more human, and in touch with his feelings in many ways. Then to see how he can rebuild and use a little bit more of that con man, to survive, because he is a survivalist in many ways. He just has to figure it out and that's been an exciting journey."

Fear The Walking Dead returns on Sunday, September 10, at 10PM on AMC.

Fear The Walking Dead S2E12 - "Pillar of Salt" Review

As "Fear The Walking Dead" hits the midway point of season 2B, things that were once broken seem to be finding their way back together. For the first time since the show began, we saw the core group of characters split apart. Madison's single-minded focus on potentially getting Nick back has done some serious damage to her relationship with Alicia and both actresses executed potent emotionality in the argument. The blossoming relationship between Nick and Luciana has us weary, as we are highly suspicious that the writers will kill her off to fuel his greasy-haired middle-class-angst, a tired old trope we're tired of seeing. But we'll refrain from kicking off fully until such offensive material comes to fruition. More than anything, the writers need to delve deeper into the material for Cliff Curtis, as they've only barely scratched the surface of his struggles trying to maintain a handle on the instability of his son's behaviour.

Fear The Walking Dead airs on Sundays on AMC at 9PM.

AMC Announces Two-Season Order For A Companion Series To "THE Walking Dead" (TITLE Tbd)‏

AMC ANNOUNCES TWO-SEASON ORDER FOR A
COMPANION SERIES TO “THE WALKING DEAD” (TITLE TBD)
New Series Will Air Day-and-Date on AMC Global
NEW YORK, NY – March 9, 2015 – AMC today announced that it has placed an initial two-season order for a companion series to “The Walking Dead,” the #1 show on television among adults 18-49 for going on three seasons.
The new series (title to be announced) will be set in Los Angeles and focused on new characters and storylines. The show’s first season will consist of six one-hour episodes and premiere on AMC in late summer. The show’s second season will air in 2016.
Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and David Alpert from “The Walking Dead” are executive producers of the new series, which, like the original, is being produced by AMC Studios. Dave Erickson (“Marco Polo,” “Sons of Anarchy”), who co-created and co-wrote the pilot with Kirkman, is an executive producer and showrunner. The series will star Cliff Curtis (“Missing,” “Gang Related”), Kim Dickens (Gone Girl, “Sons of Anarchy”), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm).
“We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television. From the beginning of ‘The Walking Dead’ on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson and their writing team, along with an incomparable set of producers, cast and crew have created something remarkable and clearly distinct. We respectfully follow the request of Monty Python as we bring out (the latest of) our Dead.”
“We feel empowered by this two-season commitment, a serious show of faith from our network partner AMC,” Kirkman said.  “I personally take it as a sign that they believe, like we do, that we've accomplished our goal of developing something original that can pay tribute to the original show and expand the world I created while at the same time having something new to say with this story.  I’m very grateful that we now have the opportunity to tell this amazing story and show the fans that we really haven't scratched the surface yet when it comes to ‘The Walking Dead.’”
“This vote of confidence from our partners at AMC is gratifying, to say the least,” Erickson said. “We’ve been blessed with amazing writers and a stellar cast - and we can’t wait to build this apocalyptic drama over the next two seasons and hopefully beyond.”
In addition, AMC Global, the international AMC-branded television network, announced it has acquired the international television rights to the series, which it plans to air within 24 hours of the U.S. premiere. AMC Global launched in late 2014 and is available in over 115 countries and territories throughout Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Sons of Anarchy Season 5 Blu Ray Review

Sons of Anarchy is set to kick off its 6th season tomorrow, September 10th, and that gives us just enough time to review season 5!

The problems of season 4 seep into season 5. The once strong SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle, Redwood Original) is rife with lies, and betrayal, as well as outside lethal and legal issues all threatening to rip them apart. Clay's (Ron Perlman) lies and greed have put SAMCRO in a tough position. The CIA is holding a RICO charge over the club, a powerful drug kingpin is out for blood, and Jax (Charlie Hunnam) may have taken the club presidency from his stepfather Clay, but the club may not survive his reign. With his wife in prison, the weight on Jax's shoulders grows as does his loneliness. He has no one to turn to anymore for guidance. He's responsible for himself, his children and the club, and the decisions he makes will affect the future and perhaps the survival of all of them.

This season there is plenty of violence and death, a few scene stealing moments and some fantastic additions to the cast. The beautiful Colette Jane (Kim Dickens) is introduced and she forms an immediate connectin with Jax. Another great addition is  Nero (Jimmy Smits); a sleazy, charming, whip-smart pimp whose affair with Gemma (Katey Sagal) pulls him deeper into a mess she may not be able to recover from.

Like all of the previous seasons, the acting is above and beyond expectations. From Hunnam to Perlman to Sagal and Smits, they so perfectly embody their characters.  Writer, Kurt Sutter, masterfully spins a web that is both unexpected and addictive.  There is no question, though, that you keep watching because you just have to know what happens next. Season 5 of Sons of Anarchy ends in familiar fashion: With familial manipulation and moral strife shattering the scales many fought to balance this season.
