Marvel's Daredevil S02E05 "Kinbaku" Recap

In a flashback to ten years ago, Matt and Foggy are crashing a party thrown and attended by elite upper-class society. Matt, with his super-senses enabling him to sense a beautiful woman when she's nearby, finds Elektra Natchios.

Back in the present, Matt wants to know why Elektra is lying in wait for him in his apartment. She is coy about giving a direct answer but she eventually apologies for how things ended between them and how much of their ending was because of her. She is alone in the world, and asks him if he knows what it feels like. He does, of course, and the two also have a shared trait of having cleaned up their father's messes. Elektra wants Matt's help infiltrating Roxxon Energy Corporation, as they now have most of her father's wealth tied up. He was a wealthy Greek ambassador before passing away. Now she will be meeting with the Japanese branch of the Corporation and asks Matt for his help but Matt declines. However, Matt is taken aback when he heads to the office and Foggy says that someone has made a massive deposit into their account. Matt knows it's Elektra's doing, despite his having declined her offer to pay him for his help.

Returning to the flashback, Elektra and Matt enjoy a bit of verbal sparring as they dance around one another deducing things about each other's lives and personalities. She is eventually impressed enough that she invites him to leave the party with her and the two ride off in a fancy red car. The two embark on a relationship together and Elektra eventually figures out that Matt has special abilities and the two even spar together in a boxing gym they broke into.

Assistant DA Blake Tower pays a visit to Foggy and asks for the files on Grotto. Reyes is on the warpath to convict Frank Castle but Foggy won't give up the files without a subpoena. Tower warns that Reyes will steamroll over them if they don't cooperate but Foggy is insistent that breaking the law could get him disbanded.

Matt goes to spy on Elektra's meeting with Roxxon Energy Corporation and finds that she has planted a bug in their system which forces the meeting to be cut short. Meanwhile Foggy goes to a former fling and colleague, Marci, who gives him information that Reyes is building a case againstFrank Castle and hopes to use his conviction to make a run for the mayor's office. It's meant to set a precedent against any and all other vigilantes, and they even name-drop Jessica Jones as another that may suffer the consequences of this along with Daredevil.

Returning to the flashback, Elektra and Matt are happy together, in love and getting into troublesome antics. Matt has opened up tremendously to Elektra about not only his abilities but all the things in his past, including how Roscoe Sweeney was responsible for the death of Matt's father. One night, Elektra and Matt break into a house and what Elektra hasn't told Matt is that the house they've broken into belongs to Roscoe Sweeney. She wants Matt to kill him, believing this revenge to be the best course of action. Matt does unleash a wave of violence against him but refuses to kill him. Elektra is devastated that Matt seemingly doesn't understand her the way she originally thought and leaves him and their relationship behind.

In the present, Matt tracks Elektra down at her apartment and she tells him that she knows his true nature, believing more than ever that they are the same. They argue again about what happened with Sweeney. Matt wants to walk away from the situation but Elektra pulls out his Daredevil costume, which she had ready to go because she knew that the bug she planted to crash Roxxon's system would result in them coming after her. Now she's ready to fight them in her tactical outfit and expects Matt to do the same.

Marvel's Daredevil is available for streaming on Netflix.
