The Following S3E15 (FINALE) - "The Reckoning" Recap

Theo brings Ryan to an abandoned cabin where an injured Agent Barton is also being held captive. Max is able to determine that Theo has taken Ryan off because he wants to take his time to torture him instead of just killing him quickly. Max is told to head to the hospital because Mike has finally woken up. Eliza calls Theo who informs her that he is refusing to hand over Ryan, despite her wishes and bargaining power. She then threatens him and says that having the FBI as an enemy will be nothing compared to them.

In the hospital, Max admits to Gwen about Ryan being taken by captive, not wanting to lie to her. While looking after Mike, Max gets a call about a potential lead for tracking Theo's location. She asks to get the video so she can work in the hospital and stay with Mike who wakes briefly to see her standing by his bedside.

Theo begins to torture Ryan to get revenge for Penny and then he brings Agent Barton in and kills her in front of Ryan to add yet another death to his list. Eliza then arrives on site and has her men stop Theo from killing Ryan. She says she had placed a tracker on Ryan, who is discretely trying to saw through his restraints with a sharp rock. Max is able to determine Theo's location and tells Lisa who keeps the information to herself, as she is revealed to be a mole for Eliza. Eliza wants to know what Theo is doing and he threatens her that he has a failsafe set up to download all the information on her and who she's been calling to every live newsfeed.

Eliza has her men torture Theo into giving up the code and interrogates Ryan into sharing what he knows about her. She even threatens Ryan by showing him Gwen's ultrasound but Ryan for once, genuinely doesn't have any information that he's sitting on. She doesn't believe him and threatens to kill everyone he knows.

Max and Lisa are following her lead to try to find Theo. Max is able to find the car while Lisa lies and claims she's already called for backup even though she hasn't. Max says they should split up and takes off into the woods.

Ryan breaks free from his restraints and attacks Eliza, telling her that he was telling the truth and didn't know anything about her but now he sure as hell is going to find out. He escapes and so does Theo. Once Theo finds Gwen's ultrasound, he gets determined to enact a whole new type of revenge. Ryan finds Theo and tries to chase after him but Theo then tells Ryan he intends to take Ryan's child and raise it to be abused and neglected just as Theo was.

Theo spots Eliza and Lisa talking and Eliza warns Lisa that everything she's been given can be taken away from her if she doesn't do as she is told. Theo then attacks Lisa and forces her to help him. Ryan finally gets out and is about to be shot by one of Eliza's men but Max shoots him just in time. Ryan calls to say that Gwen is in danger but the superior officer calls Lisa who orders him to prepare Gwen for transportation and not tell her what's going on, saying that Ryan has been compromised by Theo.

Ryan tells Max about the pregnancy and they head off to save Gwen. But as she was being moved by the FBI, Lisa and Theo showed up. Theo shot Lisa and the other agents, and then kidnaps Gwen. Ryan and Max discover the dead agents and find that only Lisa is alive. She tells them about Theo kidnapping her and forcing her to help but of course they don't know yet about her mole-status with Eliza. With the FBI's resources, Ryan is able to chase after Theo. Ryan shoots Theo but of course he survives so Theo ends up falling down a waterfall. Ryan is holding onto the edge and tells Gwen he loves her before also falling.

The FBI searches for Ryan's body but are unable to do so. They also don't find Theo's body and we're not shown Theo's fate either. Eliza is shown to be in touch with her boss(es) and tells them that their team is prepared to move in if necessary. Max lets Mike know that Ryan is apparently dead and comforts Gwen when she comes in.

As it turns out, Ryan has deliberated faked his death, knowing that Gwen and his other loved ones are not safe until he takes out this latest threat. Ryan visits a wounded Lisa in the hospital and says that he knows that she was the one who planted the tracker on him and that she's working for Eliza. He points out that two agents are dead because of her and Lisa warns him that the ultra-wealthy aren't spared the psychopathy gene and their money protects them like nothing else. He kills Lisa after she may or may not have shared information on this organisation. As Ryan leaves, he only spares a brief glance to his loves ones gathered in Mike's hospital room. Max and Mike are promising her thatch won't have to look after the baby alone and that they will help her. In order to be reunited with them, Ryan must taken down Eliza and whatever insidious group she is a part of.

The Following S3E14 - "Dead or Alive" Recap

Mike is brought to the hospital where he must undergo surgery after Mark's brutal attack. An emotional Max waits out in the hallway and Ryan comforts her as Mike's blood is still bright red on her hands. Ryan later has a protection team set up to look after Gwen.

Theo shows up at Eliza's place with Daisy and shoots more of her team dead. Theo knows that Eliza will get in trouble with other higher-ups if she doesn't make this mess go away so he pushes her to come through with a way for him to leave the country once he successfully kills Ryan. He wants her to give him manpower assistance to get the job done.

Ryan knows that Theo and Daisy are together and that there's no way he'll give up his quest for revenge for the smarter option to get away. With Lisa's approval, he makes a public statement that further plasters Theo and Daisy's faces across the news, urging people to call in if they have any information on the two.

Max gets worrying news that Mike's condition is still critical and all they can do is wait and hope for the best. She wants to keep working to help her get through things. They're trying to determine which of Ryan's loved ones Theo will target. Meanwhile, Mendez is shown to be enjoying her time with her family while the FBI team are watching outside. Theo is shown to be attacking the security team before heading inside to kidnap Mendez and her family.

Ryan follows a lead which takes him, Max, and the rest of the FBI to Eliza, not knowing who she is or her involvement with him. She claims her name is Annie and she covers her tracks reasonably well.

Theo forces Mendez to make a call to Ryan and make him think that she's found a lead and ask him to meet her at the safe house. He agrees but still suspects something is wrong so he grabs Max and brings her to Lisa's office. He tells them to remove their SIM-cards from their phones and tells them what he suspects and recommends they keep it quiet and recruit only the best agents that they can trust, no more than a dozen, so they can go after Theo. Theo learns from Daisy that Mendez put the children in the panic room. He tells Mendez not to do anything to tip off Ryan or else she will keep Mendez alive long enough so he can burn the house down.

Eliza becomes paranoid after meeting Ryan so she calls Theo and tells him that they want Ryan alive or else the deal is off. Enraged, Theo prepares to kill Mendez's wife but Mendez tells him that if he hurt her, he won't help him if Ryan should call back. Theo backs off for the time being but warns that he decides when they all die, and no one else.

Ryan and the small FBI team begin to set up a perimeter around the house. Ryan wants ten minutes to go in on his own to make sure that Mendez and her family are safe. Inside, Ryan is able to get the jump on Daisy but then Theo is shown to have his gun pointed at Mendez. Theo's men also come up from behind on Ryan so he has no choice but to lower his weapon. Daisy considers shooting Ryan herself but Theo stops her. Theo then tells Daisy to kill Mendez, her wife, and the children, after which she'll be free. Ryan is able to give a signal of sorts to Mendez before he is escorted away. Daisy begins to undo Mendez and her wife's restraints but then they're able to take off running, though not before Daisy gets a shot off into Mendez's wife. They're able to get upstairs and hide in the panic room which their children open up for them.

The team then arrives and descends upon the house. Daisy attempts to flee into the woods but Max chases after her and guns her down once she catches up to her.

While Ryan is in pursuit of Theo, Gwen leaves him a voicemail saying that she's gone to her first ultrasound and has the first photo as well as the recording of the baby's heartbeat. She also invites him to come to the next ultrasound. Theo shoots and wounds an FBI Agent Barton and Ryan calls for an ambulance and just before he can give the location, Theo is shown to be lying in wait right behind him.

The Following S3E13 - "A Simple Trade" Recap

Mark is furious about Theo seemingly going back on the deal but Theo says that Mike is just bait and once he has his sister back, Mike is none of his concern. Then Mark can enact whatever revenge he likes.

Max and the FBI are able to track Mike's cellphone to the abandoned warehouse where he had been but upon arriving, no one is there. Upon finding Mike's phone next a pile of blood and brain matter, Max fears the worst. She brings the FBI in on what she has found regarding Tom's betrayal. Max goes to Ryan's place and begins banging on the door. Max, Lisa, and other FBI teams are at the door. Ryan has to run to hide Penny and then lets Max and Lisa into his apartment. They spot the bottle of alcohol and Max is highly disappointed. Lisa gets a call that Tom's car has been found. Max wants to press Ryan further for answers so after leaving Ryan's apartment, she sends Lisa off and comes back into Ryan's place with the key she has to his place. She walks in to find him dragging Penny's unconscious body around. Max berates him for his foolish decisions. She wants to call it in but Ryan stops her, saying Theo has Mike and wants to trade Penny for Mike. Max has no choice but to go along with Ryan's irresponsible decisions because they note that Tom may very well have compromised the security so if they get the FBI involved, it could mean the end of Mike.

Theo brings Mike, Daisy, and Mark to a theatre where he intends to make the trade-turned-betrayal which will result in the death of Ryan and the return of his sister. Mark ends up killing the theatre caretaker when Theo had only told him to find him.

Max tells Ryan the drinking needs to stop and makes him dump out the bottle and his flask. They realise they're going to need to steal FBI equipment needed to undermine the surveillance Theo will have set up to rig the meet for the trade. Ryan sneaks back into the FBI, taking a drink once he finds another stash of his from his locker. With Max's help, Ryan is able to distract the guard so he can get the necessary equipment.

Mike talks to Daisy, saying if she lets him go then he will let her run. He warns her that Mark will turn on her the first chance he gets to try to kill Mark, noting how it was the same thing he himself did to Max. He is able to knock Daisy out, grab a knife and use it to cut through his zip-tie restrains. Mike runs off to try to make his escape and it's then that Mark and Theo return to the theatre and wake Daisy up. Theo warns him not to kill Mike and to bring him back to him. Daisy tells Mark in private that he needs to do as Theo says and that if he doesn't, Theo will kill both of them. But Mark says he's already dead without his mother and brother. Mark corners Mike and prepares to shoot him but Daisy sneaks up from behind and shoots Mark in the shoulder. Mark takes off running, and Mike finds himself back in Theo's custody.

Lisa corners Ryan, demanding to know what's in the backpack and rightfully assuming that he's up to something. She searches it but only finds his bottle and he claims that he's been drinking and is a mess so he has to go home and look after himself. It's a good cover and he manages to keep his stolen equipment hidden. He gets a call from Theo with the location of the theatre at which the trade will take place. Ryan brings the signal jammer which keeps Theo from using the cameras he planted. Daisy must now do Mark's job as the field sniper.

Ryan and Theo each have their hostage in hand and meet inside to prepare to make their trade. Theo cuffs Mike to the chair on which the dead caretaker's body is sitting. He orders Ryan to cuff Penny to the seat next to where they're standing. Ryan and Theo are pointing their guns at each other and must move in a circular motion to move towards each other's hostage. Theo taunts Ryan with the knowledge he got from tracking his and Gwen's credit cards. He knows Ryan's been drinking and that Gwen checked into a hotel. Max is able to stop Daisy from shooting at Ryan. Ryan gets Mike free while Theo and Penny take off running. Max and Mike meet up with each other while Ryan takes off after Theo and Penny. Penny doesn't want to leave with Theo without killing Ryan but she ends up shot dead in the back by Ryan for trying to go after him. An enraged Theo is able to make his escape with Daisy.

Ryan gets in trouble for going rogue to save Mike and Lisa says she will be putting him up for review. Ryan spins a story about how Penny attacked him at his apartment and he arrested her but then Theo called to say he had Mike. Lisa wants to get him suspended but Ryan points out that since he's just killed the only person Theo's ever loved so now Theo will go after him with guns blazing.

Theo tells Daisy she had her chance to disappear so now she will be with him until he decides to let her go.

Ryan returns to his apartment and finds that Gwen is there to get the last of her things. Ryan says she was right about everything and that he let Joe get inside of his head and now he's ashamed of what Joe made him admit. The drinking and shutting her out was because he was afraid that she would push him away once she learned everything. He promises that he'll let her go this time and won't call her anymore. Gwen is preparing to leave but then she turns around and tells him that she's pregnant. If he's going to begin the baby's life, he needs to turn things around. This gives Ryan the push he needs to go back to AA meetings and start to put the pieces back together. As Ryan makes his declarations of wanting to be better, the vision of Joe gives a nod of approval and then disappears.

Mike and Max redeclare their feelings for each other, and all signs point to their getting back together. Mike even tells her that she's the love of his life. Max invites him over but then Mark sneaks up from behind and stabs Mike four times in the back. Mark pulls Max out of her car and tries to kill her but then Mike uses his remaining strength to shoot Mark dead. Max then calls in for help as she holds onto a badly wounded Mike.

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E12 - "The Edge" Recap

Theo is not happy about meeting with Daisy but she says an opportunity has arisen for him to get to Ryan Hardy. Penny retrieves Mark, who had been hiding from a sniper vantage point. Theo considers killing Mark for sassing him but when Daisy reveals that there is a corrupt agent inside the FBI, he decides to hold off on that. For now, it looks like these evil-duos will be teaming up! Theo's willing to work together, but only on his terms.

Ryan goes to visit Gwen at the hospital, wanting to do whatever it takes to patch things up. He just wants another chance. She says that loving her isn't enough. When he makes another emotional plea to meet later to talk, she says maybe.

Tom tries to cover his tracks by coming into Max's apartment and snatching up all of the hidden cameras. He misses one for now since Max came back out so he'll have to try again later to retrieve it.

Theo gets a text from Eliza and tells Mark and Daisy they're going to help him to establish their working-together dynamic. Theo goes to meet with Eliza, rightfully believing that it's a set-up to have him killed. As Theo makes his way to the arranged spot to meet, Mark, Daisy, and Penny take out the hit-men hiding in the field who were meant to go after him. Finally, Theo takes out the last of the men  that are coming after him. He takes the lead-goon's phone in order to hack it to get to Eliza. Next, Theo is able to track down that Tom was the one to use the feed. He knows that Mark wants revenge on Mike and tasks him and Daisy with getting Tom to plug Theo's thumb drive into the FBI database which will get him his access back. Mark plans to kill Theo once he's finished with Mike.

Ryan and the rest of the team get some information that allows them to track Sophia/Penny's information. They also note that Sloan is missing. Max at first thinks she could be the mole but Mike then notes that she said she had questions so perhaps she found something regarding the Mole. As Ryan and Max follow a lead regarding past crimes with Penny's prints that lead them to a drug house. They know about the death of Josh, Penny's old flame, and are able to follow this to another lead to track down a possible location which could be a hiding spot for Theo and Sophia.

Tom returns home after learning that the FBI is looking for Sloan. Her body is still in his bathtub but before he can make any moves to dispose of the body, Mark and Daisy take a photo of him with the body and blackmail him into doing what they want, which means he needs to plug the thumb drive into the FBI server. He does this and Theo gains access. This allows him to find Eliza and he tells Penny that they need to pack up since it's time to leave and get a new identity.

Ryan and Max are staking out the possible location and Ryan heads out for a moment, taking a drink from his flask. He then gets a call from Gwen, who says she'll hang up if he lies. He admits that he's drinking again but promises her he can and will stop. She tells him he needs to not only do that but quit the FBI too. He then spots Penny so he tells Gwen he needs to call her back. Ryan and Max take off after Penny but she runs off and is able to hide. They then get a call from Mike, who tells them that Sloane's dead body has been found in the trunk of a car. Max doesn't want to leave Ryan but he pushes her to go handle things involving Sloan while he will continue his pursuit of Penny. Ryan is then revealed to have found Penny and tied her up to keep her hidden. He wants information on Theo.

Theo goes to meet with Eliza, who lets him in despite all the brutality he has wreaked. She agrees to accept his offer and he shares that he wants him and Penny to be able to disappear and live a life where no law enforcement is hunting them. She says that if anyone knows about her or her organisation's involvement, the deal is off. As Theo is leaving, his phone gets a ping that the FBI has matched her fingerprints and he leaves Penny a message warning her about it.

Ryan brings Penny back to his apartment where she admits that Theo owes her because things were supposed to get better after he had the family killed but each foster home they went to was worse than the last. She's not impressed or intimidated by him and Ryan momentarily leaves her to have a drink. He gets a call from Max who says they're going to retrace Sloan's steps to try to find her killer. At the influence of his visions of Joe, he then decides to torture her.

Tom gets a call from Mark who demands that he bring him Mike. Mike is still working with Max and advises her to go home and get some rest while he'll carry on the investigation when she gets back. She says she's going to check the surveillance footage because of how the signal went dead right as they were on to him, suggesting that perhaps he knew what they were doing.

Theo hacks surveillance footage and discovers that Ryan has Penny. Ryan decides to waterboard Penny since he read that she is terrified of water because she almost drowned when she was seven. She admits that Theo is being helped by Mark and Daisy.

Tom lures Mike away with a false lead regarding Sloan and Max finds on the surveillance footage that Tom was the one who spotted her and Mike working on the laptop feed and realises that he is the one they're after. She tries to call Mike but Tom holds him up at gunpoint before he can answer. Tom admits that he killed Sloan but that it was an accident. Mike is able to guess that Mark is waiting at the place they've driven to. Mike tries to reason with him but Tom is beyond any of that. They head inside and upon arrival, Mark makes Tom think he's going to surrender the phone but instead throws acid on his face after which Daisy shoots him dead. An emotional Mark wants to kill Mark finally, but Theo arrives and tells Mark and Daisy to drop their weapons, as he intends to trade Mike back to Ryan so he can get Penny back.

Ryan is being tormented by his visions of Joe and getting violent with Penny, waterboarding her to try to get her to talk. His torture-session is then interrupted by a call from Theo, who informs him he has Mike.

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E11 - "Demons" Recap

Ryan wakes up the morning after Joe's execution and must now face the repercussions of the bender he went on, namely that he went home with a random woman and hooked up with her. He goes home to Gwen and confesses what he has done. She is appalled by how far he has gone off the deep end and leaves, saying they are finished. She still hasn't told him that she's pregnant and Ryan continues to have visions of Joe.

Mark is still trying to go after Mike but Daisy stops him from attacking him on the street, as there was a security-detail present. She has another plan that she feels is a more practical approach and he agrees to do it her way. He also acknowledges that he is still Mark but likes to slip back into the Luke character when it is better suited for the situation.

Mike and Max are continuing their investigation into finding the FBI mole and Max receives a call from Gwen who tells her that Ryan is drinking again but she can't be there for him anymore. Max then heads over to check in on Ryan and tells him about a lead they've gotten regarding Theo. They've been able to track down Theo's true origin, Terrence Jackson. Theo's entire family was slaughtered, and Theo/Terrence pointed the blame on an abusive boyfriend of his mother and the boyfriend ended up dead six years later, after which Terrence disappeared.

Theo and Penny head to a wealthy and twisted resort. They must be tricky about getting in and is warned about it not being wise to get involved with these people but Theo says this is exactly what he wants. The resort is run by a woman named Eliza.

Max calls Mike over so they can work with Ryan to work on Theo's case. They're able to figure out that the murder of Theo's family was not committed by the abusive boyfriend, as a broken mirror they find in photos of the crime screen match the M.O. of a serial killer that had been active in the 1990s. The team plots to get this information out there, believing that Theo won't be able to resist going after that serial killer. Ryan later gets in trouble for going after the killer himself but he's been able to better determine the killer's psyche. The killer breaks mirrors because he thinks they will send him back to hell.

Daisy and Mark find a hacker to help track down the person who has the feed that monitors Max and their hacker is able to determine that it's someone inside the FBI but he says hacking the FBI is beyond his capabilities. Daisy says she has someone that can complete the task, thinking of Theo.

Theo and Penny have snuck into the resort and that's where it's revealed that the resort is one where people come and bring a guest they plan to kill. They manoeuvre their way to the back where they meet Eliza. Theo offers to bring her Ryan Hardy, since it's only a matter of time before she'll end up on his radar anyway, in exchange for which he plans to ask her to help his regain his anonymity. But for the time being, he just leaves his card, saying the rest of the discussion will be had another day.

Ryan is working with Agent Lisa Campbell to find the killer of Theo's family and she advises him to walk away from Gwen since their line of work doesn't leave much room for having romantic relationships. When Ryan heads downstairs, he finds the dead body of a hotel staff member killed by the serial killer with whom he'd had a run-in with. The killer makes it into Lisa's room but Ryan comes crashing in just in time to beat him up. He nearly kills the man with his own weapon before Lisa threatens to shoot him if he doesn't stop. When the man is brought in for questioning, Ryan gets him to reveal that Theo and he were friends and that Theo asked him to murder his own family except for his foster-sister Sophia (Penny) who had been taken in just for the money. The man also calls Theo a demon.

Daisy uses a way to get in touch with Theo and before doing so, warns Mark that he is perhaps the scariest man she's ever met. He says she is free to walk away now but she says she owes Mark so she will stay with him.

Tom is questioned by Agent Sloan as part of the mole-investigation and continues to lie to cover his tracks. When there's some discretions in what he says, Agent Sloan comes to his place to question him further and she figures out that he was lying. There is a brief struggle in which she is shot and ends up dead, much to Tom's horror.

Ryan returns home, hoping to find Gwen but instead discovers that she had come back while he was away to clear out her belongings from the apartment. His vision of Joe tells him that he's better off without her and offers Ryan a drink.

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E10 - "Evermore" Recap

It's Joe Carroll's execution day and the preparations are underway. There's protestors outside the penitentiary and Joe still has his newly fashioned and sharpened weapon from the sunglasses he absconded. As Joe gets moved, he kills some guards and takes three hostages whom he barricades in the execution room with him. He informs the FBI and makes his demands, one of which is for Ryan Hardy to arrive in the next two hours or else everyone will die.

Theo retrieves his sister from a run-down house and kills the man with whom she was keeping company after he tries to stop Theo. Once his sister wakes, Theo fills her in on everything that's happened lately, including his killing Strauss and Ryan being after them. There's a plan but they're interrupted by the news involving Joe Carroll and his hostages.

Gwen calls Ryan before he's going to enter. She doesn't want him to go in and tries to tell him about being pregnant but he tells her to share her news after he's returned. He tells Mike and Max to look after each other if anything should happen to him. Ryan meets Joe at the door of the room he's barricaded in and Joe wants him to cuff himself but Ryan only agrees to do so once Joe has released the hostages. Joe only releases one but it's good enough for Ryan. Joe tazes Ryan once he gets inside.

Theo tells his sister how he needs the code which will give him the name of someone that can give him his anonymity back. She doesn't approve of him going after Ryan, saying it's too dangerous and that he'd be better off just disappearing.

Joe wants to have a conversation with Ryan. Joe is insistent that he and Ryan are soulmates and wants to stage an intervention that will force Ryan to admit some hard truths about himself. Joe threatens to cut out one of the hostage's eyes and Ryan then admits that Joe is in his dreams and in the dreams, they are friends who drink together and Joe teaches him to kill. This makes Joe remove the wire he had secured around Ryan's neck and says he's the only one who knows the real Ryan. Ryan is pushed to admit that he gets satisfaction from the power of killing. Joe uncuffs Ryan, who then punches Joe who places his arms out in surrender to be cuffed.

Theo hacks the prison security network to get a look inside. As Ryan leads Joe and the hostages towards the exit, Theo's sister hacks the system to release the death row inmates. They're trapped, since the FBI team waiting is unable to get inside since the whole system is down. The hostages are overwhelmed by the inmates. One inmates takes Joe off, while the politician-hostage gets stabbed. Two inmates take the female-lawyer-hostage off but Ryan, after overpowering the inmates he was fighting, takes off after them and kills the men and leads the woman back inside.

Joe is fighting his inmate-captor and Ryan arrives as Joe is being overpowered. It's clear that he's considering letting the man kill Joe but eventually, the good in him wins out and he saves Joe. Together, they take out the last inmate. The FBI are finally able to get inside and take control back of the situation.

Theo's sister wants to disappear and for Theo to go with him. Theo says that the only way to disappear is for Ryan to die, saying his death is the key to their future. Ryan calls Gwen to tell her that he needs to stay for Joe's execution and get closure on this. Meanwhile, Theo is finally able to crack the code after his sister gives him some words of guidance. The decrypted message reveals a set of coordinates.

Ryan asks Joe why today had to happen and Joe says that Ryan is his real legacy and Joe says that know he can die knowing he will live on through Ryan, whom he considers a brother. As a parting gift, Joe gives Ryan a cryptic message that is apparently meant to help against Theo. As Joe is about to die, he observes that Ryan is in the viewing gallery. Joe's final words are, "Quoth the Raven, never more." As Joe dies from lethal injection, Ryan appears rather shaken, though perhaps this is also due to the trauma and exhaustion of the day's events. Later, Ryan heads to a bar to grab a drink, and imagines that Joe is there to share a drink with him.

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E9 - "Kill The Messenger" Recap

Ryan has nightmares about Joe coming into his apartment and helping him prepare to kill Gwen. She comes to wake him and tells him to come to bed and that she doesn't want to fight anymore. Ryan is later attacked by some police officers because their computer had said that his car came up stolen with a suspect matching his description. It seems clear that Theo and his computer-hacking skills are to blame.

Theo is looking for information on Strauss' secrets. He breaks into a woman named Juliana's office, as Juliana was Strauss' go-between. The FBI is still trying to track down Theo and they're determining how he has been hiding his murders behind murder-suicides. Meanwhile, Theo is still hacking Ryan's life to throw him off balance. He even hacks the traffic lights to cause a car crash for Ryan. Theo then calls him and says that he needs to be punished. Theo is just getting started.

When Theo is unable to crack the code he retrieved from Juliana's office, he tracks down a failed Army ranger named Gary, who is also a guard at the penitentiary where Joe is imprisoned. He befriends Gary and takes him out for drinks. Theo is also shown to have been a student of Joe's when he was a professor. Theo also hacks into Gwen's work files to make it look like she's over-prescribing meds. Gwen is now having doubts about whether or not she can keep their relationship going when everything she's worked for is being threatened.

Mike is still on the hunt for Mark Gray and Mark overhears a conversation between Mike and another agent about searching for him so she gets herself assigned to the case. Mike is in Atlantic city and tracks down Daisy, who is hunting, robbing, and killing rich men in order to get by. Mark wants to kill her, except Mark is now claiming that he is Luke, saying that Mark drowned. But he agrees to spare her life for now when she says she has a way to find Mike Weston.

Theo takes Gary to enact revenge on the man who turned Gary down for the ranger program and then kills the man. Gary heads into the prison with Theo in his ear. Theo hacks the system so Gary can get in, and has Gary communicate with Joe on his behalf. Theo wants Joe to give up the key to crack the encrypted information of Strauss' secrets. Theo promises Joe that he'll keep killing in Joe's honour, which will ensure that his name lives on in infamy. But Joe isn't so ready to pass his legacy on just yet so he kills Gary and says he still has a card up his sleeve to play.

Max and Mike track down the laptop that was removed for Mark's safe house after the raid, which was never filed with evidence. Max's boyfriend Tom realises what they're going and takes off running to destroy it before they can find out hat he had it but they're still able to figure out that the laptop was in the building. Now they are under the impression that the FBI has a mole.

But Ryan needs to visit Joe following the murder of Gary. Ryan had been refusing to do so and once Joe slyly mentions Gwen, Ryan attacks him in a fit of rage. Joe is flattered to be the "most important relationship" is Ryan's life. Ryan says that Joe is just a disease that will be cured once he's been executed. When Ryan gets home, he tells Gwen he wants to make things work and reassures her that he loves her, and an emotional Gwen hides out in the bathroom with a pregnancy test that reads positive.

Meanwhile, Joe is shown to be fashioning a weapon/key/tool of some kind from a pair of sunglasses that he stole off of Gary's uniform. Could Joe be making a break for it? We'll have to wait and see!

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E8 - "Flesh & Blood" Recap

Theo has indeed killed Tucker and disposes of the body by putting it through a meat grinder. Afterwards, he heads home to be with his wife Cindy and their two children.

Donovan is still convinced that the FBI needs to find Tucker, Manitech's now-deceased CEO, but Ryan remains convinced that Tucker is just another person being framed. Donovan is taking over for Mendez more permanently because she has put in for early retirement.

Joe meets with a psychiatrist as he needs to pass a psychological evaluation before being put to death. During the meeting, he picks the lock on his cuffs and kills her and a guard. He does a bit more stabbing but eventually manages to make it outside where Ryan is waiting for him and tells him to get in. Of course it's all just Joe's mind wandering. He's still locked up!

Theo's wife is getting suspicious of all these "work trips" he's been taking and has gotten in cahoots with her neighbour Nancy to try to determine if he is cheating. (That's a more probable theory in their minds than the actual problem - he's a serial killer). Theo catches on that Cindy is suspicious so he's quick to figure out a course of action to deflect suspicions. He also tells his wife that he wants to do something she's wanted for some time now - have another baby.

Ryan, Mike, and Max are more determined than ever to follow the leads on Manitech. They find that the file of a man named "Sam Lewis" is a bit too perfect. Their investigation pings a warning to Theo, who hacks into the records to morph all of the photos of Sam into other faces. All visible information of him is gone now. Ryan and Mike visit the address of the home on file while Theo watches them from hidden surveillance feeds. There's little to nothing for them to find since no one lives there. However, they do find a hard copy of an ID badge with Sam's face on it. Ryan warns Mike that this seems like a trap once he's spotted the cameras and tackles Mike into a bathtub just in time as Mike has set off some C4 explosives. The laptop and suitcase they had found were destroyed, and all the explosives were constructed with basic, simple materials and are therefore untraceable. The upside of this? Donovan believes them now. The only remaining course of action since there's no digital copy of "Sam's" face is for Max to meet with a sketch artist.

Joe has declined to choose a method of execution so it will default to lethal injection. He's further upset to learn that Ryan has declined his invitation to Joe's execution. Ryan's relationship appears to be in trouble. He gets into hot water with his girlfriend after not telling her that he had been shot. Ryan then forgets about the plans he had to have dinner with her and her boss. When the topic of the death penalty comes up, with the doctor disagreeing with Joe Carroll being sentenced to death, Ryan kicks him out and it triggers another fight with his girlfriend.

Theo throws his wife Cindy a surprise birthday party as part of his plans to deflect her suspicions of him. But nosey-Nancy makes it clear to Theo in the kitchen that she knows he's lying and keeping secrets and even tries to bring her husband Bob in on it all. So of course this means that Theo kills Nancy and Bob to make it look like a murder-suicide.

Mendez visits Ryan to say she's in on this case to catch Theo. It's one last case before she's out for good. They follow a lead to a man named Eldon Wick, who vetted Theo so he could get a job at Manitech. They head to Wick's place and in his basement, find ears dangling from the ceiling. Ryan also hallucinates seeing Joe down there. This certainly doesn't bode well. Mike finds a body with the brain exposed. Wick pops out and tries to get away but Ryan catches him. Wick won't give up any information but when Ryan offers him fame/notoriety and newspaper headlines with their names linked, Wick starts to give up the goods. He says that the man (Theo) came and found him a year prior, threatening to expose Wick's killings unless he vetted him. Theo had left behind a USB drive which he never destroyed.

The drive has Theo's signature on it so the FBI's tech team is able to trace Theo to Maryland. The code Theo used was also used to hack the system as well as the now-deceased Bob and Nancy's e-mails. On the way to Maryland, Max spots a photo of Theo on Nancy's Facebook page. From there, it's a quick move to follow the trail to Theo's wife's records and from there they find her address. Theo gets an alert on his phone that the FBI have accessed Cindy's records and he is less than pleased. Once again, Theo must cover his tracks. He proceeds to drug his children and kill his wife. He seems semi-apologetic, given the circumstances, and says he'll cherish the memories they made together and keep it with the others he's collected. So just how many families has he created and destroyed on this path of his?

The FBI descend on Theo's house but he's already gone. They find Cindy dead on the bed with candles lit around her as well as flower petals strewn across her body. Thankfully, they find that the children are still alive. Mendez is shaken from the fact that the children could have been dead and it's the final straw. She quits for good this time. Then, Ryan gets a call from Theo who threatens him to say that this isn't over. He warns Ryan that he doesn't even realise half of what Theo is capable of.

The Following S3E7 - "The Hunt" Recap

Two police officers are transporting a man named Duncan, one of Strauss' followers. Their GPS takes them out to the middle of nowhere and then their car dies. But it's all been orchestrated by Theo, who quickly disposes of them and recruits Duncan to join him.

Ryan attempts to get Joe to reveal the identity of Strauss' best student but Joe claims that Ryan is "looking at him." Ryan rubs it in Joe's face that Strauss thought Joe was a failure. Joe wants to discuss Ryan's love life but the conversation is interrupted by officer who says that Joe only has a week left before he will be executed. But Joe will get to select the method with which he will die.

Nick Donovan arrives to get back to work, though he's still missing that eye due to his run-in with one of Joe's followers. He is there pending Mendez's disciplinary hearing and wants to ensure that the office is as transparent as possible to prevent any further problems.

Max has been cleared for limited duty and attempts to fire her weapon at the shooting range but she's still sore and on the mend. Ryan warns her that she needs to take care of herself and then Mike arrives to say that they need to find a man named Luis who was involved with the fake IDs that were found with Strauss.

Strauss and Duncan have headed out to tie up loose ends, which means trying to kill Luis. Since they're unable to find him with his friends, Luis' friends are the ones who end up torn apart. Ryan and Mike find the carnage while back at the office, Max and the cyber security team follow a lead that the breach in their servers came from Manatech Security.

Max is following the lead with Manatech and Theo tells Duncan to go after Luis on his own because he has business of his own to take care of. As it turns out, Theo works at Manatech! It's all starting to come together! But at Manatech, he's known as Sam. Who knows what his real name is anyways. One of the lead technicians at Manatech, Peter Collins, tries to claim that Max is wrong in her theory that it's a single culprit they're looking for. But Max spent four years working in digital security so she shuts Peter's nonsense down.

Theo uploads something to Collins' computer. We're guessing it's something to incriminate him. On his way out, he bumps into Max, who has no idea who has just run into her. But this causes her to unintentionally show her hand, as Theo now knows that Max is on the mend.

The FBI get a lead on Luis' girlfriend and Ryan lets Mike know which interrupts him having an argument with Max's boyfriend Tom in a stairwell before anyone can throw a punch. Luis' lovemaking is interrupted when his girlfriend sees a news story that Luis is wanted by law enforcement. But before they can make their escape, Duncan arrives. Duncan murders Luis' girlfriend, knocks out Luis, and abducts him. Duncan brings Luis to a warehouse where the fake passports are printed. Duncan needs to destroy all the evidence.

The crew at Manatech finds that last week's files were corrupted and just one employee called in sick the day of Strauss' trial. Guess who? Peter Collins, of course! See! He got framed! He's arrested and brought in by the FBI. But then another employee, Kent, comes forward to Max and says that he and Peter were together (sexually) on the day he called in sick and only didn't admit it because he has a wife. Max asks for Kent's help in determining who framed Peter but Theo has been listening in on their entire conversation.

Theo calls Duncan, who is burning evidence and preparing to kill Luis. Theo needs Luis to do one last job before he is killed.

Kent determines that someone duplicated Collins' entire system but before he can track anything further, the system goes out. He heads to the basement to reboot it, leaving Max at the computer. But when Kent reaches the basement, Theo is waiting for him and stabs him in the heart. Max finds Kent's body and then the lights go out. She calls for backup, pulls out her weapon, and Theo stalks her in the dark, preparing to kill her. But the cops arrive before he can do anything so he escapes.

The other FBI members have arrived at the warehouse and Luis is finishing his final job for Duncan. Luis is cuffed and Duncan escapes temporarily. Eventually, Ryan catches up to him and though he is shot in the chest, he survives due to wearing his vest. Ryan in turn shoots and kills Duncan. Those new passports that were printed off surprisingly aren't for Theo. The photo is that of Tucker, the man in charge at Manatech. Theo is shown to have gone to Sam's house in order to likely frame him but when the FBI arrive, Tucker and Theo are nowhere to be found. Ryan remains skeptical but Nick issues orders that Tucker is hunted down and found no matter what.

Finally, Ryan is shown to be having an ultra-creepy dream about Joe. In it, they're quite friendly hanging out together. They're drinking, playing pool, and Joe keeps saying how he'll always be there for Ryan. They even hug. HUG. Even with a low(ish) body count, you can always count on The Following to creep us out!

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E6 - "Reunion" Recap

Ryan's visiting Joe to try to get information on Strauss. Joe will play ball but only if Ryan agrees to keep coming and visiting him until he is executed. After the first visit, Ryan has to run to the restroom and throw up due to being so shaken by it all. He then heads to visit Max in the hospital who is still recuperating after getting beat up by Daisy. Ryan delivers the bad news about her suspension since the FBI needed a scapegoat. But the investigation must carry on.

Ryan and Mike look through old missing persons cases hoping to connect them back to a student of Strauss, since Joe advises him to look for more of Strauss' friends, students, and associates. Six cases have turned up in the small town of Beacon, New York, so they head up to investigate. The sheriff doesn't want to work with this "rogue" agent, but one of the officers, Hillary, recognises one of the missing people in Ryan and Mike's file as a possible Jane Doe they had found earlier.

Tommy is still using the spy cam feed to creep on Max. She has yet to admit anything about her hookup with Mike but he knows she's hiding more than what she's letting on.

Hillary takes Ryan and Mike out into the woods to where the body was discovered. They find an area with creepy dolls tied up in the trees and briefly encounter a masked man who they chase to a particular area before disappearing. They're able to uncover nine buried bodies at someone's burial ground. Many of the bodies match these missing persons reports and determine that the killer has been operating there for roughly fifteen years now.

This killer is a man named Theo (oh look, it's Michael Ealy!). Over a decade ago, he opened fire in an office complex. Theo is a hacker and was wounded during that shooting. Upon going to get medical supplies, he had a run-in with Strauss, and the rest was history.

Hillary takes Ryan and Mike to a diner to grab a bite while they carry on discussing the case. The diner is owned by Hillary's uncle Duncan, who has been looking after her ever since her parents died. A waitress tells them they should look into the sheriff's son Justin, as there's apparently something off about him. They follow that line of investigation and discover a meth lab he's been running in the woods in which there is also the mask he had been wearing earlier when they previously encountered him. Justin tries to make a run for him but ends up cuffed and brought in. The sheriff comes in while they're questioning Justin and the sheriff is horrified to learn the extent of what his son has been up to. Justin insists that he doesn't know anything about Strauss and the sheriff says that though his son is stupid and irresponsible, he can tell he's not lying. He grabs his son up to process him and take him to the station. Ryan is fine with letting him go, telling Mike that Justin isn't smart enough to be one of Strauss' students.

It's revealed that Strauss and Daisy are indeed in town but they're being hidden in cabin by Uncle Duncan. He comes to visit them and warns that Ryan and the FBI are in town so they really need to leave quickly to avoid getting apprehended. Strauss says they can't leave until their new identities are delivered by his "best student," which is Theo. Theo has been laying low for the last decade and a half, never getting caught for any of his killing. Duncan seems jealous and angry that another student was contacted.

Ryan and Mike are able to determine that Duncan is the one who has been helping Strauss. Duncan tries to hold a knife to Hillary but she knocks her way out of his grip and is emotionally distraught to realise that everything she knew was a lie and that her uncle was the one who killed her parents. The sheriff knows about Duncan's cabin so he offers to show Ryan and Mike where it is. As they're on the their way there, Theo is seen approaching it. We see him reminisce over meeting and getting familiar with Strauss, who coached him through how to better cover his tracks, building on Theo's already strong killing abilities.

Throughout this episode, Theo has been helping Strauss by killing his lawyer and then of course getting these new identities together. He's also meant to be delivering some credit cards for them as well. They had previously had a conversation about Theo being a shark and not swimming above water (of course it's a metaphor for not being caught). But when Theo comes to apparently help Strauss, Theo strangles him to death in front of Daisy, saying he had to do it because Strauss had exposed him and sharks are never supposed to swim above water. Theo and Daisy leave each other alive.

Ryan and Mike let Duncan know about what has happened to Strauss. He is upset to learn about Strauss' death. He says he doesn't know the identity of the killer but says that Strauss only referred to him as "his best student." When Theo returns home, we see he has a wife and two children. Talk about a juicy double life!

Ryan goes to visit Joe to get more information about this "best student" of Strauss, Daisy gets into a car with some unknown (for now) associate, Mike visits Max and the two discuss her knowledge/cover-up of his execution of Lily Gray, and Tommy spies the whole exchange between the two!

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E5 - "A Hostile Witness" Recap

Ryan pays a visit to Strauss to tell him that all his scheming is over but Strauss simply says that it's never over and he should look inside himself about what the real truth is.

Tommy is still spying on Max using the screen he stole from the crime scene and sees her ignore him when he tries to call her.

Daisy and Kyle ask Mark to go get medical supplies for Kyle's injury and when he steps out, they leave to meet with Juliana. But Mark was on to them and has followed them there, after which he begins following Juliana. She had given them FBI gear for their latest mission. It should also be noted that Juliana is part of Strauss' legal team.

The FBI is on high alert to make sure security is at its highest possible level. They also have to keep their key witness Carrie Cooke safe. Ryan also has them look into the backgrounds of everyone that has visited Strauss in prison. But Daisy poses as an agent and with Kyle's help, they make a move to access Carrie's hotel room.

Ryan is called to the stand by Strauss' lawyer. An e-mail is put into play that was allegedly written by Clarke about concerns over Ryan and the investigation that happened throughout the previous year. It doesn't bode well for Ryan, and things are worsened when Carrie doesn't show up to the trial. The judge says that if Carried doesn't arrive within the next hour, the case will be dismissed.

Ryan runs out with Mike and Max to try to find Carrie and catch up to Daisy and Kyle who set fire to a van that's filled with the security guards they killed as well as Carrie. They follow after Daisy and Kyle into the woods and Kyle forces Daisy to get away and then makes Ryan kill him by trying to move in with a knife. Ryan calls the prosecutor to tell her what has happened but it's too late. The judge has already dismissed the case and Strauss walked 20 minutes ago.

Mendez has been ordered to suspend Ryan, Mike, and Max, but gives them until the following morning to do an investigation that will connect Daisy with Strauss and prove criminal conspiracy. The group follows a lead to Juliana but Mark has already hunted her down and killed her. Before doing so, he learns from Juliana that Daisy and Kyle had been Strauss' students, and insists that he tell her where Strauss is.

The trio tracks Daisy down to a pier in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where Daisy has met with Strauss and they are preparing to flee the country via a cargo ship. Strauss threatened Ryan that there are more of his students out there but before either side can make a move, Mark begins firing shots at the group from afar with a sniper rifle. Ryan tells Max and Mike to get Strauss, while he himself will go after Mark.

Mike leaves Max alone to go after Mark himself, and Max is outnumbered and knocked out by Daisy who then gets away with Strauss. Mike lands a shot in Mark's leg, which hinders his ability to move quickly. Mike corners him and prepares to kill him but Ryan stops him, saying it's not worth it and will be more painful for Mark if he has to live the rest of his life in prison. Mike lowers his weapon, after which Mark jumps off the ship and gets away too.

Max is badly injured and rushed to the hospital. Mike and Ryan argue in the hospital over Max's being left alone by Mike but Mike reminds Ryan that he would've done the same thing if it had been Joe on the ship. Ryan gets some encouraging words from Gwen, who lets him know that Max will be okay, and Ryan realises that what he needs to do now is visit Joe Carroll. What are Joe's first words of this season? "What took you so long?"

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E4 - "Home" Recap

Mark is getting suspicious of Daisy and Kyle and insists on tagging along with their latest killing spree. Daisy and Kyle had already staged a suicide of a college student, though we don't know what their motives are for doing so. Ryan and Max are sent to track down one of Daisy and Kyle's homes in Ohio but it appears to just be a cover-home at which none of their evidence of psychopathy seems present. They run into Daisy and Kyle's dog-sitter and have her call them to issue a warning that they will find them. But despite Daisy's panic, she and Kyle carry on over to the fire department where Max's father used to work and proceed to murder the men working there. Mark also joins in on the killing spree.

Daisy and Kyle meet with Juliana, wanting to get out of whatever set-up they have going on but she refuses and tells them to finish the mission, after which they will be free to do as they please. Max is shaken by this personal attack and ends up hooking up with Mike (reminder that she is still dating Tommy). The whole encounter is caught on camera by the hidden cameras Daisy and Kyle planted. The morning after, Max says she regrets the hookup despite the fact that Mike believes they belong together. The conversation is interrupted by a call from Tommy, who says that they've found Mark's hide-out spot since the FBI had spotted Daisy and Kyle leaving the house in Brooklyn. Mark is watching the hidden camera feed so he's able to get out in time. Tommy finds the laptop with the camera feed and sees the footage of Max and Mike hooking up and swipes the laptop for himself instead of turning it over.

Daisy and Kyle must now target a co-ed at a local university. They had earlier murdered her boyfriend by pushing him in front of a moving vehicle. We still don't know why they're doing any of this but this girl's death has to look like a suicide for some reason. They're caught up to by the FBI, and did we mention that Tommy tries to pressure Max into admitting what she did but when she doesn't, he almost doesn't save Mike when he's hanging off the side of a building? Anyway, Daisy and Kyle get away but Kyle is injured.

The FBI are able to determine that the girl Daisy and Kyle killed was the daughter of the judge on Arthur Strauss' trial (which will begin the next day). Strauss, in case you forgot, was Joe Carroll's mentor and the one who saved Joe after he faked his death at the boathouse.

As for our favourite on/off love-birds, Mike is still trying to convince Max that they belong together but she still firmly believes that he is too obsessed with avenging his father's murder for them to be able to have a successful relationship.

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E3 - "Exposed" Recap

Ryan, Max, and Mike are on a mission to get justice for Clarke's death. They even go on national television where Ryan claims that Mark is responsible for these deaths and that none of what Clarke confessed was true. Max is able to find an old case where a woman was murdered and found with all her joints broken. Ryan then tracks down a many named Wyatt who after being threatened, gives them the e-mail address of Neil Perry, the man who last week murdered Clarke with that freaky box.

Meanwhile, Mark is still furious about Ryan lying during the press conference so he decides the best course of action is to kidnap two reporters, one of which he quickly murders. The female reporter had suggested to Mark that he could use them to get his story out there but she ends up as the only one left to ask the questions.

The group tracks down Neil, who we've seen struggling to tend to his sick, elderly father, while also looking after the wood shop. Neil must now flee with his father and though they get away at first, Neil's father having dementia means he has a tracker on him. This allows Ryan to track them down at a market, but Neil is able to get away once more but without his father. When Ryan and Mike catch up to him again, Neil forces them to kill him by pulling his weapon on them.

The female reporter is able to manipulate Mark into getting upset so she can try to escape but Daisy kills her before she is able to. Daisy is starting to want out of whatever scheme they're involved in, since hers and Kyle's faces are now plastered all over the news and she wants to have evil-babies with Kyle. The pair meet with a woman named Juliana who reminds them there is still more work to be done and they must keep Mark happy. Juliana threatens them, though we don't know the specifics of what she is holding over them. She then gives them a file with information on Max. Mark grows suspicious of them when he finds the file, but Kyle claims that it was supposed to be a present for Mark to kill Max. Mark seemingly is put at ease by this answer, but the 'Luke' voice in his mind warns him to keep an eye of them, as they are up to something.

Ryan asks Gwen to move in with her and she says yes under the condition that he let his walls down. Finally, we see Daisy and Kyle planting hidden cameras in Max's apartment. She nearly catches them but her boyfriend Tommy shows up to take her to dinner.

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E2 - "Boxed In" Recap

Mark goes to a garage where he meets an associate named Spider, who has set up a torture chamber that even has an execution chair. Apparently, the plan is for Mark to kill an FBI agent. Mark, perhaps? Or Ryan? Max? All of the above? He heads back to the evil lair to wake up Kyle and Daisy and get the plans going. Kyle is getting sick of Mark but Daisy encourages him to play nice for now since they have plans of their own, though we don't yet know what.

As for our heroes, Ryan and Mike are questioning Andrew Sharp, the man who they arrested last episode that was also the one who picked up Mark. We don't learn much apart from the fact that his wife and kids were just part of a rouse to seem societally normal. What he demands is that they confess the truth about the execution of Lily Gray or else more blood will be spilt.

Meanwhile, Daisy and Kyle stalk a woman at a grocery store and follow her back at her house. They tie her up and force to call her husband to get him home. Her husband is a man named Jeff Clarke who was shown through flashbacks to have helped Ryan and the rest of the group cover up what happened in the woods and coaches Ryan before the hearing.

The FBI are able to track down the garage where Spider and Mark are. They trip a silent alarm that in turn forces Spider to get Mark to a secret passageway that'll get him out through the sewers. The FBI discover a board that has photos of Anna, Clarke's wife, and realise that's where they have to go next. When Clarke returns home, he gets kidnapped while Daisy puts a plastic bag over Anna's head and leaves her for head. The FBI arrive in time to resuscitate Anna but Clarke is long gone.

Mark calls Daisy up to say that they've lost their torture chamber so they have to go with Plan B. Daisy warns that this isn't a good idea but Mark is insistent so she calls up one bad man named Neil who is as scary as they come. Mark then Skypes the FBI to warn them that they need to tell the truth by 8 o'clock that night on television or else Clarke will die. During their hunt, the FBI find that Andrew went to school with Joe. It's a strange revelation because Mark hates Joe and blames him for the death of his family so there's a lot of unanswered questions about who is really calling the shots here and where everyone's allegiances lie. Ryan goes to question Dr. Strauss and he won't say anything that's not cryptic and adds that Andrew is motivated by fear in order to get things done.

As for Clarke, he is able to briefly escape and call Ryan while out and the FBI is able to track the location. But it's shortly after that he is discovered and recaptured. Neil tells Clarke that the metal box he has been soldering is the perfect size for Clarke, adding that he will paralyse Clarke and dislocate him one limb at a time to make him fit. By the time the FBI arrives at the location, a video confession is released onto the internet which they watch in which Clarke admits the truth about what happened in the woods.

By the time the FBI get inside, the killers are gone but they find an empty room with the metal box and blood trailing out of it and Clarke's badge on the top. Though we don't see the contents, by the reaction of the team, it's clear that they all learn the gruesomeness of what happened in it. Mark isn't as pleased because he wasn't able to be present for Clarke's death.

In a continuation of the flashbacks between Ryan and Clarke, we see that around the time of the hearing, Clarke has chest pains which put him in the hospital. While there, Ryan meets his current girlfriend Gwen, who had been the doctor tending to him. In the present, Gwen comforts a crying Ryan in the shower.

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

The Following S3E1 - "New Blood" Recap

Detective Ryan Hardy is at the wedding of his FBI superior, Gina Mendez, and enjoying being there with his new girlfriend Gwen. It's been a year since the events of the season 2 finale. Gwen wants to move in together and then Mike shows up. Things are awkward between him and Max, as she's got a new man, her fellow-FBI member, Tom. That's right, Max joined the FBI. Surprised? You shouldn't be!

Joe is scheduled to be executed in a month. But before we get to that, Ryan needs to give a wedding toast to the beautiful brides. But his toast is interrupted by a waiter working the wedding who throws blood on Ryan and the brides, calling Ryan a liar. The man sobs that Ryan shot his daughter, who was at the Corbin compound, and says her blood is on Ryan's hands. She was just a "lost girl who lost her way." Ryan tells security to let the man go, and the man does so without making any more of a fuss. Ryan still feels guilty about it so he decides to look up the man's daughter. When they arrive on scene, they find that the girl's actual father is someone else entirely.

Enter Daisy, a new psychopathic killer on the scene who poses as a prostitute to lure a couple to their deaths. Enter Kyle, Daisy's beau, also in on the murderous psychopathy. They're in cahoots with the fake-Dad, whose real name is Andrew. When Ryan and the rest of the group arrive at Daisy and Kyle's murder scene, they find that the corpses have been rigged up into a tableau, and the words "Ryan Hardy Lies" are painted on the wall.

Another incident occurs and when Ryan, Mike, and Max show up, they find another message. This time, it says, "Max Hardy Lies," and this causes Ryan to figure out what's really going on here. The killers are recreating moments that the FBI killed members of Carroll Gray's group. He determines that Mark is behind this. Poor little Mark is pulling a Norman Bates but instead of talking to his "mother," he's talking to his dead brother.

This new team of murderers is hitting up an art fundraiser in search of a snobby blonde to fulfil their tableau in which Mike killed Lily. But the FBI have figured it out now so they arrive on the scene but they're only able to capture Andrew and bring him into custody, while the rest get away with the blonde woman in the red dress. Mark pulls the trigger but is incredibly emotional afterwards, begging her not to leave him.

Ryan questions Andrew, who is revealed to be the one who picked up Mark the night that Luke died. He admits he's a sucker for a good revenge tale. Andrew wants to know the time because apparently there's somewhere Ryan needs to be. How ominous. Of course the next crime scene is that of some strung-up "FBI" agents standing over "Lily"'s body and another message left behind, "While you lie, more die."

Kyle implores Daisy that they can't leave Mark, who apparently has no idea "what's really going on," and it's important that it stays that way. Could they be Joe's followers too? Max has a hard drink after her long day. Ryan reaches out to Gwen after trying to push her away earlier. He apologises, saying it's a pattern he has developed of pushing people away but he doesn't want to do it anymore. As for Mark/Luke, he/they are planning to kill an FBI agent the next day. Welcome back, The Following!
