Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E013 "AKA Smile" Recap (Season Finale)

Jessica rushes Luke to the hospital. He has no visible injuries but she did shoot him in the head to stop his Kilgrave-induced attack on her and now he's unconscious. At the hospital, the doctors treating him are unable to penetrate his skin with the needle. Claire Temple comes over to help and discovers his impenetrable skin. Another doctor tries to put a drill to his skull to relieve the pressure building in his skull but it doesn't work. She realises she is one of the gifted people and tries to get a consultation.

When Jessica sees some police officers coming, she lifts Luke's body into a wheelchair and Claire agrees to help treat him. Jessica is stopped by a nurse under Kilgrave's influence (which he can now use through phones) who has called to talk to her for the purpose of antagonising her. She sends Claire to go to her apartment and bring Luke there to be treated. Jessica tracks Kilgrave to the security surveillance room in the hospital but when she reaches it he is already gone. Jessica is attacked by a security officer that shoots at her and chases her. But then Kilgrave broadcasts an announcement throughout the entire hospital claiming that they've all been poisoned and must hunt Jessica down in order to save themselves. Jessica is able to escape the hospital but not without a scalpel cut to her leg.

Jessica gets to her apartment just in time to help Claire, who needs to go through the optic nerve in Luke's eye to drain the excess fluid in his skull to save his life. Jessica has to hold his head still despite his having a seizure so Claire can work. They are successful and must now let Luke heal and hopefully recover and wake up. Claire treats Jessica's leg wound and Jessica decides to try to track Kilgrave down by checking Luke's phone, as Kilgrave had been keeping in contact with him to command him through calls.

Kilgrave had the remains of Hope's baby retrieved from the lab that Jeri had them stored in and Albert has used these to create a drug that will further enhance Kilgrave's abilities. The injection is painful but Kilgrave hopes that it will be enough to finally reassert his control over Jessica. Jessica tracks down the apartment that Kilgrave has been operating out of just in time for a gravely wounded Albert to tell her that his abilities are much stronger now. Jessica calls Jeri to confront her about the samples but Jeri is more concerned with Pam's arrest and imprisonment.

Jessica and Trish head out to confront Kilgrave. Trish dons a hoodie and acts as a distraction, with music blasting through headphones to keep from falling under Kilgrave's control. When Jessica reveals herself, Kilgrave commands some police officers present to shoot at her as he gets away. He is preparing to get away on the yacht belonging to the couple that owned the apartment where he had been running his experiments to enhance his abilities. Jessica and Trish head out to the dock and must stop a swarm of people that Kilgrave orders to kill each other while he tries to get away on the yacht. Trish's headphones get knocked off in the commotion. Jessica charges through the people fighting, continuing towards Kilgrave. Kilgrave shouts "stop" and everyone stops fighting and moving, including Jessica. He thinks that she's faking it so he calls Trish over as his new hostage. When Jessica still doesn't jump at him, he begins to believe that the experiments worked and he finally has control over Jessica again. He is prepared to leave with Trish, saying that if they ever see Jessica again, Trish needs to slit her own throat. He even has Trish kiss him but still Jessica doesn't move. He walks away from Trish, who is still standing by the boat, to walk over to Jessica. He tells Jessica to smile and she does. He then tells Jessica to tell him she loves him but she says it to Trish instead before lifting Kilgrave up, telling him to smile, and then snapping his neck.

Everyone on the dock is freed from Kilgrave's influence but Jessica is arrested for Kilgrave's murder. Luke Cage finally wakes in Jessica's apartment and Claire advises him to go slow, filling in on what happened to him and why he's now there. She also tells him that Jessica has killed Kilgrave and is now in custody for it. Luke appears relieved that Jessica finally did it. He doesn't want her to be in prison for what she has done and tries to get up but Claire stops him. Luke realises that the police must be looking for him for his attack on them when under Kilgrave's influence but Claire tells him that with everything that happened at the hospital and then on the docks, the police will not be looking for him since they're too busy dealing with everything else. Still, Luke disappears from the apartment.

Jeri is able to get Jessica released, as everyone will be prepared to testify to the truth about Kilgrave and if they need a story to use to explain it, they can always claim it was a gas leak that caused everyone to act out. Jessica appears moved by Jeri's passion in the speech she gives about Kilgrave's influence. Considering how many police officers had shot at Jessica Jones, the prosecutor has no choice but to let Jessica go. Now Jessica will be busy with a whole new wave of calls from people in the city that have heard about her abilities and need her help. Trish is also shown to have received a package from her mother containing more files on IGH -- likely a plot to be developed further in season two.

Marvel's Jessica Jones will return for season 2 on Netflix.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E12 "AKA Take a Bloody Number" Recap

Luke Cage is physically unharmed after the explosion in his bar. He reveals how he tracked down Kilgrave two days earlier and was commanded to blow up his bar but only when Jessica would see it. Kilgrave learned how Luke was involved with Jessica and that he was Reva's husband but not about Luke being virtually indestructible since it's not the sort of thing that he would've thought to ask. Jessica reveals how killing Reva seems to have been the trigger that made her immune to Kilgrave. Luke wants to help but Jessica tells him he needs to hit the twelve-hour mark first to ensure any lingering commands from Kilgrave wear off.

Trish calls Jessica to tell her that someone got into her apartment to clean up the dead guys and Jessica says that someone did the same at her place with Will. Kozlov worked for a company called "IGH". Trish is also visited in the hospital by her mother. Their relationship is not mended but they are relatively cordial to one another. Her mother later visits Trish at her apartment with some paperwork that show that IGH had also paid for Jessica's medical bills following her childhood car accident. Trish's mother wants a relationship with her but Trish doesn't want to pursue it when she gets the sense that her mother doesn't fully understand the extent of how abusive she was. But Dorothy says that the remaining files will still be waiting for her if she decides to come home, so the question has been posed of whether they were involved in her gaining her superpowers. But that's a questions for another day (season 2, perhaps?)

Jessica and Luke follow their own investigation into what Kilgrave is getting up to, including forcing some scientists in a lab to work non-stop. They speculate that he may be keeping Albert alive in order to find a way to boost the strength of his abilities. Kilgrave not only wants more power, he wants protection to keep Jessica from being able to stop and kill him as she remains the one person immune to his abilities. During their investigation and stake-outs, Luke also tells Jessica that he forgives her for killing Reva and the two seem to be in a better place now with whatever relationship they will have moving forward.

Trish visits Jessica and meets Luke Cage. She tells Jessica in private that she should pursue a relationship with him or at the very least, forgive herself and find some happiness once everything with Kilgrave is finished. She had intended to tell Jessica about what she learned regarding IGH but decides that now isn't the right time to do so.

Jessica and Luke track down a nightclub where Kilgrave had been testing the capabilities of the enhancements on his powers. Kilgrave emerges and confronts Jessica, revealing that he has had Luke under his control the entire time and had told him what to say to forgive Jessica. Their entire intimate conversation about forgiving her had been composed by Kilogram. Luke then knocks Jessica to the other side of the club while Kilgrave shares the numbers on how far his powers reach and for how long they last. Luke, still under Kilgrave's control, attacked Jessica and the two fight with the full strength of their abilities.

After police officers arrive and are overpowered by Luke, Jessica is finally able to get the upper hand and get a shotgun pointed directly at his head. Luke, still unable to shake off Kilgrave's influence, tells her to do it and so she shoots him.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E11 "AKA I've Got the Blues" Recap

Teenage Jessica wakes up after the car accident that killed her family. She's the only one that survived and now the Walkers are preparing to take her in as a publicity stunt concocted by Trish's absuive stage mother. Trish is a child star on TV on the "Patsy!" series.

Returning to the present, Jessica is shaken by the death of Hope while the support group members (and Robyn) are recovering from nearly dying by Kilgrave's orders. Needless to say, Robyn believes in Kilgrave's power now. The police arrive and when the group is questioned, they all claim that Trish killed herself but don't say anything about Kilgrave.

Jessica and Trish go to a morgue where a new, unidentified, elderly man has been brought in. It's not Albert but Trish needs sleep so Jessica spends the rest of the night without her on a search throughout the city's morgues that have newly acquired dead, elderly men. In her sleep-deprived haze, she spots (or at least thinks she does) Kilgrave and follows him into the street where she is hit by a truck and then stumbles off away from the gathered crowd.

Will visits Trish at the station and tries to apologise for his actions and men their relationship but Trish appears to be disinterested in resuming a relationship with him, though she plays it somewhat polite for the time being. He tries to ask where Jessica is but Trish won't give any information as to where she is. Trish then meets up with Jessica and helps her patch up after her accident. Jessica says she'll heal fast so she just needs some time to do so.

In a flashback, teenage Jessica overhears Trish in an intense argument with her mother. Trish doesn't want to be Patsy anymore but her mother wants to force her into staying in the job. Jessica is stressed out by hearing them fight and accidentally breaks the enormous marble sink and discovers that her strength is so significant she can easily lift the large piece of marble over her head. The argument escalates and Trish comes into the bathroom with an injury on her arm from her mother throwing or perhaps hitting her with a People's Choice Award. Jessica says Trish isn't allowed to reveal her secret or she'll reveal the abuse to everyone which means the media would turn the story into a circus. The two agree to keep each other's secret.

Jessica discovers Clemon's body in the morgue and realises that Will killed him. Trish calls her and tells her what she has learned so Trish agrees to come out and continue the investigation with her. When Trish goes into her hallway, she finds Will waiting for her, wanting to mend their relationship but also insistent on learning where Jessica is. He blames her for the death of his fellow men that died in the explosion and says she keeps getting in the way of his attempts to kill Kilgrave. Trish tell him that Jessica is the only one that can kill Kilgrave and Will is the one getting in the way. Some men arrive that were sent by Kozlov that was concerned about Will's use of the pills. They have been ordered to take him in so Will pops some more red pills and shoots both of them in the head. When Jessica calls Trish, Will answers, claiming to know where Kilgrave is but will only give her the lead if she agrees to let him help. They agree to meet at her apartment. Will has locked Trish in her workout room and leaves her pounding on the door. She grabs a weight and begins to beat the hinges out of their place so she can escape and help Jessica.

Will heads to Jessica's apartment where the two dance around one another regarding the circumstances of Clemon's death before getting into a fight. The already drugged-up Will takes even more red pills and this, combined with Jessica's injuries from getting hit by a truck, allow him to overpower her. Trish shows up and gets Jessica into the bathroom. Trish is prepared to take some red pills to stop Will herself. Will warns her that she'll need some blue pills to come down from the effects, which she won't be used to, before tossing the blue pills out the window. Trish doesn't care and pops a pill and gets to beating the hell out of Will. Jessica comes out to assist and together, they knock his road-raging self out cold. Trish has to be hospitalized because she loses the ability to breathe.

In another flashback, Jessica watches Trish be forced to throw up by her mother. Jessica uses her strength to overpower Dorothy Walker. Trish reminds Jessica that now Dorothy knows about her abilities but Jessica doesn't care, having decided that protecting Trish is more important.

While Jessica and Trish are at the hospital, Kozlov and his men retrieve Will's still-unconscious body from Jessica's apartment. Jessica receives some text messages from Kilgrave, warning her that he knows about Luke Cage. She heads to Luke's bar in time for an explosion to go off in it with him inside. But due to his abilities, he is able to walk out of the bar. His clothes are on fire and Jessica helps put them out. Though shaken by the experience, he appears to be mostly unharmed.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E10 "AKA 1,000 Cuts" Recap

An injured Kilgrave makes his escape from the facility by ordering Jeri to drive him away. Jeri is horrified at realising the truth about how depraved Kilgrave is, having witnessed him command his mother to kill herself. Kilgrave orders her to drive him to a doctor.

Jessica goes back into the building and finds Trish hysterical and repeatedly tapping a bullet against her head because Kilgrave had commanded her to put a bullet in her head. Jessica forces Trish to put a bullet into her mouth so that she will have fulfilled the command without dying. Jessica then has to restrain Albert who wakes from his unconscious state and resumes trying to cut his heart out. Detective Clemons is calm but shaken from the experience, also having a badly injured hand from forcing it out the handcuff under Kilgrave's order. Jessica informs Trish and a taped-up Albert how she is now immune to Kilgrave and Albert shares how Louise had been working to find a vaccine against Kilgrave's ability, which works like a virus. He can't work right away on trying to develop that vaccine himself because of Kilgrave's order but Trish can do it for him under his instruction. Jessica gives them a sample of her blood to use and test in Albert's motel room where he has some equipment.

Jeri brings Kilgrave to Wendy under the hopes that he'll command Wendy to sign the divorce papers. Jeri admits to Kilgrave that Hope had been pregnant with his baby but aborted it, after which she kept the remains for herself to try to recreate his abilities but it didn't work. Jessica didn't know about this but calls Jeri after Kilgrave has finished being patched up by Wendy. Kilgrave commands Jeri to answer and act normal, to not reveal that he is there, and to find out where his father is. Jessica appears to be suspicious of the call and pretends not to know where Albert is. Jessica overhears Wendy on the call before it ends and Kilgrave deduces that Jessica does know where Albert is. Wendy, having previously made a comment about 'death by a thousand cuts', is commanded by Kilgrave to get her revenge on Jeri by doing that in the very literal sense.

Will arrives at the facility where Clemons is guarding the evidence of the scene that will be used to help put Kilgrave away. Will asks Clemons what happened, identifying himself as special forces. After Clemons catches him up on the recent events, Will shoots him dead execution-style as he doesn't want Kilgrave to go through the courts but simply be killed. After killing Clemons, Will destroys the evidence by setting it all on fire. Will is high on the effects of the red pills that Kozlov gave him, which were designed to enhance combat performance and act as an extreme pain-killer.

Pam arrives at Wendy's house and knocks Wendy in the head with a decorative piece of furniture to stop her attack on Jeri. Jeri falls into the corner of a table and is killed as a result. Pam is shaken, not having intended to kill Wendy, and Jessica arrives immediately after. Jessica angrily exposes Jeri for trying to use Kilgrave for her own selfish purposes, to the detriment of others, saying she was the one that sabotaged the kill switch to allow Kilgrave's escape so he could try to help her with her divorce and as a result Louise died. Jessica assures Pam that what her killing Wendy was just an accident but what Jeri did was murder, then leaves.

Trish is still working with Albert to try to develop a vaccine against Kilgrave's abilities using Jessica's blood. Malcolm is trying to help Robyn in her futile search for Ruben, out of guilt for what happened to him. Jessica returns to her apartment and finds Kilgrave waiting for her, admitting that he's know she was immune to his abilities for some time now despite Jessica only having just figured it out. Kilgrave reveals that he has used his abilities to get Hope 'legally' release from prison and is offering to give her back to Jessica in exchange for his father.

Pam is brought in for Wendy's death and Jeri tries to represent her but Pam refuses the offer, ending their relationship for all that Jeri has done.

Jessica and Kilgrave recall a particular moment in their 'relationship' that they have disagreeing accounts of. Kligrave deliberately let the time span of 12 hours run out since his last command on her in order to test if she genuinely wanted to stay. Jessica recalls that Kilgrave had gone inside while she was on the balcony. She then got on the edge of the balcony and considered jumping off the edge to commit suicide. But while she stood there debating her option, Kilgrave commanded her back off the ledge. Kilgrave believes that the encounter proved that by her not jumping, she proved that she still wanted to be with him. But Jessica reminds him that he got angry and told Jessica to cut her ears off but stopped her before she could go through with it. However, Jessica still has a scar behind one of her ears from the encounter. Jessica then knocks Kilgrave out.

Malcolm admits his role in covering up Ruben's death to the support group, not realizing that Robyn has followed him and overhears the entire confession. Robyn stores up negative sentiment among the group towards Jessica and rallies them into taking action against her and Kilgrave. The group arrives at Jessica's apartment and attacks her. Robyn briefly disarms Jessica by knocking her in the head with a plank of wood and then goes to free Kilgrave, not knowing nor understanding the danger of releasing him.

Will arrives at the motel where Trish is with Albert. She is taken aback by how he is high and the oddness of his behaviour and he admits to taking pills, claiming they're helping him to recover from his accident. Will flies into a rage when he learns that Albert is Kilgrave's father and when Trish is knocked into a wall during the commotion, she angrily kicks him out of the motel room. She then notices that she has managed to get a bottle of his red pills.

Jessica wakes and gets a call from Hope who is about to be released. Jessica hurries to get to the prison but when she arrives, she finds that Kilgrave has already taken her. They are waiting for her at his favourite restaurant.

Albert is able to work on the vaccine research now that the 12-hour period has passed. He gives Trish information on what the red pills Will was taking probably are. They're the type to help with strength but they have dangerous side effects because your conscious won't grow to adapt to your new strength. Jessica brings Albert to the restaurant where Kilgrave is sitting with Hope while all the support group members are standing on the bar with nooses around their neck that will strangle them if they jump off the edge of it.

Hope pleads with Jessica to kill Kilgrave but Jessica doesn't want to make a move towards him that would risk any innocent deaths. Kilgrave summons Albert to him and Hope breaks a bottle to get a piece of glass to stab herself in the neck to die to keep Jessica from focusing on her and simply go after Kilgrave and kill him. In her dying breaths, she pleads with Jessica to promise to kill him which Jessica does. Kilgrave gets away with Albert because he commanded the support group members to step forward, forcing Jessica to stay and dislodge the pipe from the ceiling that the ropes were tied to.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E09 "Sin Bin" Recap

Kilgrave wakes trapped in the hermetically sealed room. Jessica plays the clips of him being experimented on as a child to try to torture him into showing his abilities on camera. The floor inside is also covered in a layer of water so that he can be electrically shocked into being stopped as an extra safety precaution. Kilgrave admits having searched or his parents but was unsuccessful. Jeri arrives and tells Jessica that any confession obtained would be under duress and inadmissible in court. Jessica remains determined to use Kilgrave to save Hope and is shocked to learn that Hope has been offered a plea deal in which she'd serve 15-20 years as opposed to a life sentence and is considering taking it. Jessica visits Detective Clemmons in the hopes of getting him to come witness Kilgrave's abilities so he can testify to their legitimacy.

Trish drives Will to the hospital, as he's still badly injured following the bomb explosion that Kilgrave set up on him at the end of the last episode.

Jeri is watching Kilgrave while she calls Wendy to try to talk her down from her continued rising of the money she wants from the divorce proceedings. Kilgrave gets Jeri to turn on the mic so they can talk (not with his abilities, as the hermetically sealed room prevents that) and he subtly suggests that he could help her with her problem and that Jessica has been lying to her. He tries to convince her into letting him out but she doesn't.

At the hospital, Will will only see a Dr. Kozlov, whom he knows from his time in the Army. Trish is escorted out while Kozlov works, as Will says that he "wants back in".

Jessica has Jeri record her entering the room to try to provoke Kilgrave into using his abilities. She taunts him and beats him. Jeri wants to hit the switch to electrically shock them into being knocked out but Trish allows Jessica to continue until the last moment before hitting the switch herself to stop Jessica from killing Kilgrave. After Jessica wakes and exits the room, Trish suggests to her that they run away together but Jessica is determined to see things through. Trish also tells Jessica about Will being in the hospital. Jessica learns of Kilgrave's parents names, Albert and Louise Thompson, from the tapes of the experiment and decides to track them down, also convincing Hope not to take the plea deal.

Will is given some red pills by Dr. Kozlov that quickly heal his injuries but Kozlov warns him about not overdoing the dosage. After Kozlov leaves, Will disregards the warnings and begins popping more of the pills.

Jessica finds Albert and Louise after a long investigation, in which she realises after tracking down a photograph of them when they were young, that Louise has been attending the Kilgrave support group. They reveal that they didn't abandon Kilgrave immediately after his abilities manifested as he previously claimed. Louise has facial scars from a kid Kilgrave throwing a tantrum and forcing her to put an iron to her face. She convinces them to comes to the base and Clemons arrives to be a witness to Kilgrave displaying his abilities. Albert and Louise are led into the cell while the group, including Trish and Jeri watch the scene unfold. Kilgrave is upset at them for leaving him alone but comes to express remorse for his actions as a child.

Louise embraces her son and Kilgrave apologises for hurting her. She says that he is her responsibility and reveals a hidden pair of scissors which she uses to stab him, saying he must be stopped. Kilgrave commands his mother to pick up the scissors and tells her to stab herself for every year that she left him alone. Jessica hits the kill switch just before she is about to stab herself but it fails to work. Jessica runs inside and stops Albert from cutting his heart out with the scissors, as Kilgrave commanded. Trish had used her gun to shoot the glass of the room to try to stop Kilgrave but it merely allows Kilgrave to escape with a passing command that she put a bullet in her head.

Trish puts the gun to her head but it's out of bullets. Kilgrave orders Clemons to follow him and he breaks his hand to get out of the cuffs Jessica had put him in to make him stay and watch Kilgrave demonstrate his abilities, has he had wanted to arrest them before he could see it. Jessica grabs onto Kilgrave to try to stop him from leaving and he tells her to let go, and she pauses to stare at him before Clemons tackles her which allows Kilgrave to run out of the building. By the time Jessica gets outside, Kilgrave has made his escape with Jeri being the getaway driver whether she likes it or not. Jessica flashes back to the night Reva died, when Kilgrave shouted at her to "get back here" when she was walking away from him due to the shock of killing Reva. Jessica realises from that memory and her most recent encounter that she is immune to Kilgrave's mind control.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E08 "AKA WWJD?" Recap

In a flashback, a teenage Jessica is preparing to go on a trip with her parents and younger brother. She thinks of it when entering her childhood home where Kilgrave hopes to build a life with her. He has a private security guard present named Hank that searches Jessica and confiscates her phone, which she had set up in a plan to record Kilgrave admitting his role in the death of Hope's parents. Kilgrave says he wants Jessica to choose him and she orders that he not touch her, which he says he won't do until he gets her genuine consent. Kilgrave had gone to the effort of painstakingly recreating all the details and decorations to match how it was when Jessica lived there. Kilgrave introduces her to the waitstaff, Laurent Bouchard and Alva Ramirez. Jessica doesn't want to stay in a house with people forced to be there but Laurent says that his salary is twice what he made at his last job, from which he was fired for drinking on the job. Kilgrave leads her to her childhood bedroom. Trish calls to see where Jessica is and what happened at the police station. Jessica tells the truth about Kilgrave showing up but claims to have left town of her own volition to lay low for the time being, leaving out the fact that she with him, and insults Kilgrave to prove she isn't under his control. Trish knows that Will is missing, having taken a leave of absence from work before disappearing and is now concerned that Kilgrave has him. She still doesn't know that he discovered Kilgrave taking up residence in Jessica's childhood home and Jessica joining.

Kilgrave has left Jessica with a gift, a sparkly purple dress, which she tears apart despite his wishes that she wear it for dinner that night. Jessica gets into an argument with Kilgrave at dinner to test the boundaries and discovers that Kilgrave installed a failsafe when the waitstaff emerge when hearing the noise and hold up knives to their own throats. Later that night, Will sneaks into the house and tries to get Jessica out, believing her to be under Kilgrave's control, but Jessica overpowers him and hides him from Kilgrave knowing that he's there. Will has installed a bomb in the house to take Kilgrave out but Jessica is insistent that Kilgrave must stay alive in order to get Hope off. She steals Will's phone for herself and alerts Kilgrave about the bomb, which Kilgrave's security disposes of. Kilgrave knows that it must have been Will that planted the bomb but is pleased that Jessica saved his life.

Jeri is still in her messy divorce proceedings with Wendy, who remains determined to walk away with a significant amount of Jeri's money. Pam interrupts the meeting to tell Jeri that Jessica has texted to say she's with Kilgrave.

Trish spots Will back in the city and demands answers about why he disappeared. He lets it slip that Kilgrave is out of the city and now thinks that they should leave Kilgrave and Jessica alone. Trish refuses to give up and remains intent on helping Jessica but Will thinks that they would only get in the way and put themselves in danger.

Jessica asks Kilgrave if his actions ever haunt him and Kilgrave begins to reveal a bit about his past and that he harbours negative feelings towards his parents. A neighbour, Mrs. De Luca, interrupts their outdoor breakfast and Kilgrave welcomes her to join them when she offers to tell childhood stories about Jessica. When Mrs. De Luca starts to talk about how Jessica would torment her younger brother and how she did so the day before the accident, Jessica forcefully tells her to stop. Perturbed, Mrs. De Luca claims that she sensed something bad was going to happen before the accident until Kilgrave forces her to admit that this is just a lie she told to try to feel more important. Jessica becomes further enraged when Kilgrave touches her hand. They go inside the house where Jessica tells him he raped her by forcing her what to do and Kilgrave yells that he never knows if people want to be with him and that he has to meticulously choose his words in order to be able to interact with people without forcing them to do his bidding. He then shows her the pendrive that Reva had hidden in the box Jessica dug up. On it is footage of Kilgrave's parents performing painful experiments on him as a child until his abilities manifested and he forces them to stop.

Jessica wonders where Kilgrave's parents are now and he speculates that they might still be alive, as they were young when they had him. Jessica realises that nobody ever taught Kilgrave to be good. After seeing a news story of a man holding his wife and children hostage at gunpoint, Jessica takes Kilgrave to the crime scene unfolding, though not before Kilgrave orders the waitstaff to remove the skin form each other's faces if they don't return in two hours. Jessica and Kilgrave use their abilities to get past the barrier and get the wife and children free, with Kilgrave telling them to not tell anyone they were there before they leave. Kilgrave is prepared to command the man to kill himself but Jessica instructs him to have the man turn himself over to the police instead, as it's not his choice to decide whether the man lives or dies. Kilgrave seems to have enjoyed his experience as a hero and is now inclined to become a superhero duo with Jessica. She tells him he can do it without her but he reminds her that without the intervention she gave, he would've killed the man. She is overcome, realising he is right and leaves to go for a walk to clear her head. Kilgrave not so subtly threatens to harm the waitstaff if she doesn't return.

Jessica visits Trish and tells her about having stayed with Kilgrave and her attempts to reform him. She asks for advice on whether she should stay with Kilgrave and put the grueling work in to try to overhaul his way of using his abilities to help the world.

Jeri texts Jessica, wanting her to find leverage on Wendy, and Kilgrave texts her back pretending to be Jessica saying she's on it. Jessica brings back Chinese food as part of a larger plan that ends in her knocking out the wait staff before injecting Kilgrave with some Sufentanil to knock him out. When she carries Kilgrave out, his security interrupts her getting away until Will shoots him. More security arrive so Jessica flies away with Kilgrave's unconscious body. Mrs. De Luca then approaches Will and the remaining security and detonates the bomb he had left earlier. Will is not dead following the attack, but badly injured.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E07 "AKA Top Shelf Perverts" Recap

Ruben goes to visit Jessica and deliver some banana bread but he meets Kilgrave instead, who was lurking in her apartment. Jessica is out drinking her guilt and sorrows away. Jessica's still drunk when she follows Jeri's wife Wendy into a subway station and tries to force her to sign the divorce papers, as she promised Jeri that she would do whatever it took to make her sign them. Jessica dangles her over the edge of the subway track and gives a speech about guilt and shame. But since Jessica is still drunk, she accidentally drops Wendy on the track just as a train is coming. She jumps down and throws Wendy back onto the platform and stares at the oncoming train for a moment, seemingly contemplating letting it hit her (we've seen prior indications that Jessica struggles with thoughts of suicide) before jumping back onto the platform herself.

Jessica returns to her apartment where Malcolm finds her sitting drunk in the elevator. He helps her back into her apartment, a parallel to all the times Jessica has helped him back to his place when he was high on drugs. The banana bread is in her kitchen, but she doesn't notice it. She goes to lay on her bed where she finds some blood and turns over to find a dead Ruben with a knife in his hand, seemingly having cut his own throat. Jessica is devastated that there is more blood on her hands, a heavy symbol of the guilt she continues to carry for all of Kilgrave's actions and the responsibility she feels at needing to stop him. Jessica spots a footprint and realises that Kilgrave was there and responsible for Ruben's death. Malcolm considers calling the police till he realises that this is the third death that Jessica is connected to and she'd be blamed for it despite her innocence. Jessica becomes resigned to end things so she devises a plan. If she gets sent to a supermax prison, there will be countless layers of security that Kilgrave won't be able to indirectly send people through to retrieve her so he'd have to come himself and get caught on camera using her abilities. Jessica calls the station in search of Clemmons, the lead detective of Hope's case, and decides to turn herself in as soon as he will come on shift. Jessica tells Malcolm he needs to disappear, as she won't be able to protect him anymore. She only has until 8PM to wrap up all her loose ends.

Jessica calls Trish, who is too busy having sex with Will to answer the phone. When Jessica calls again, Trish ignores it because she doesn't want Jessica to convince her that everything going wrong with their plan to capture Kilgrave wasn't her fault. Trish has devised her own plan to find Kilgrave, which involves tracking the new security detail he hires to protect himself. She informs Will of this lead.

Jessica visits Jeri to get information on how to best strategise getting sent to a supermax prison. Jessica visits Luke's bar but he isn't there. Jessica asks the elderly bartender to tell Luke that the right people will pay for what's been done. Jeri is later confronted by Wendy while Pam is present, and demands 75% of her assets due to Jessica's threatening and nearly killing her. She also has e-mail correspondences ready to use to blackmail Jeri that would expose her of bribing a juror in one of her old cases. Wendy also warns Pam that all Jeri does is lie but Pam claims she already knew, though afterward Wendy leaves she berates Jeri for not confiding all of her dirty secrets to her too.

Jessica pays a visit to Trish's mother Dorothy, who was also Jessica's guardian after her family died. Dorothy was an abusive stage mother that forced Trish into show business to play a child-star character "Patsy" and Trish became addicted to drugs in the process. Jessica is angered by Dorothy's refusal to take any responsibility for her actions, as Dorothy makes excuses for all of what went wrong such as the doctor "overprescribing" medication. Dorothy and Trish haven't had any real contact in three years, save for an accidental encounter in the city or the odd drunken voicemail. Jessica threatens Dorothy to remember their agreement and stay away from Trish, adding that no matter where she is, even if that's behind bars, she will find out and come for her and hurt her. Dorothy claims to have changed but also loses her temper when Jessica goads her with the reminder that she still profits from Trish's royalty checks.

Will has been following Kilgrave's security detail and updates Trish with lies, claiming not to have found any trace of Kilgrave all while watching him instruct movers at Jessica's childhood home. Trish goes to visit Malcolm after he called her. He shows Trish Ruben's dead body and informs her of Jessica's plan to get sent to a supermax prison. When Jessica returns to her apartment, Trish is waiting for her. Malcolm had already gotten rid of Ruben's body and now Trish is ready to confront her about her plan. Jessica and Trish come to an impasse, as Trish won't be able to stop Jessica from going through with her plan. Jessica then tracks down Malcolm at the docks where he has disposed of Ruben's body. She dives in and retrieves Ruben's head and heads to the station where dumps it on Clemmons' desk, insisting that she be arrested. She fires Jeri when she arrives and tries to get Jessica off from these charges. Jessica wants to push through the usually drawn out process of getting charged while Clemmons wants to keep questioning her. She breaks free from her restraints and folds up her chair to demonstrate her strength and push Clemmons to put her into supermax. Another officer comes in and undoes Jessica's cuffs still dangling from her wrists and tells her she is free to go.

Jessica storms out into the main area of the station, believing that Jeri has interfered and gotten her off from her charges only to find the entire station full of people frozen with their weapons pointed either at each other or at themselves. Kilgrave emerges and tells Jessica he's been keeping an eye on her but doesn't want to control her. He wants her to come with him of her own free will and claims to love her. Jessica confronts him about killing Ruben and Kilgrave claims that Ruben was annoying and interrupted him while he was leaving Jessica a present that she didn't even find. Jessica offers to go with Kilgrave but he doesn't like that she is only offering to save the people in the station as opposed to out of genuinely wanting to. Kilgrave says that Jessica leaving him to die was the first time someone he wanted walked away from him and gave his his first experience of yearning. Now Kilgrave wants her to choose him just as he chose her and claims that they are "inevitable". He has the police station erase the security footage indicating that either of them were ever there. He leaves the station with Ruben's head and tells everyone in the station that in thirty seconds they'll all realise this was all a big joke and will allow Jessica to leave. He tells Jessica to look for his present and claims that he'll see her at "home".

Jessica returns to her apartment and discovers the box that Kilgrave forced her to dig up the night of Reva's death. Inside, she finds a black book with a post-it bearing the message "Start at the beginning".

Jessica packs a bag and is prepared to leave but is interrupted by Robyn who demands to know where Ruben is. She is apologetic for her disagreements with him and highly worried about Ruben's well-being. Jessica has nothing to offer her about Ruben's whereabouts and leaves to catch a taxi to her childhood home. Standing outside, she recalls a flashback of her with Dorothy Walker as a teenager right after the accident. Teenage Trish is shown to have a large bruise on her neck, presumably from the abuse of her mother. In the present, Kilgrave emerges from the house and welcomes her inside while Will is shown to be spying on the entire encounter.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E06 "AKA You're a Winner!" Recap

Kilgrave plays in a high-stakes poke game where he tells everyone to go all in and then fold, meaning Kilgrave wins the million dollars on the table. When one of the players tries to stop him, Kilgrave tells him to put his head through a nearby post.

Jessica and Malcolm throw around ideas of how to stop Kilgrave. Luke arrives, telling Jessica he wants to hire her to help find Antoine Grier, the missing brother of a woman named Serena. Serena had tried to pay off the money that Antoine owed to some loan sharks. Jessica later gets a call from Jeri, who informs her that Hope was attacked by one of her fellow inmates but is refusing to identify her attacker. Jeri paid off one of the guards to get the name of the inmate, Sissy Garcia. Hope won't ask for isolation and refuses to speak to Jeri about it. Jessica visits Sissy and uses her strength to threaten Sissy to stay away from Hope. Sissy reveals that Hope paid her fifty dollars and some cigarettes for Sissy to beat her. Jessica visits Hope in the infirmary where she learns that Hope is pregnant with Kilgrave's child and hoped that the beating would cause her to miscarry but it didn't work. Hope has every intention to keep on getting beat, even if it means risking her life, until she miscarries.

Jessica has a timer set to remind her to send Kilgrave a daily selfie, as part of their agreement for him to leave Malcolm alone. She continues her investigation into the whereabouts of Antoine while Kilgrave looks at real estate listings. Jessica determines that Malcolm ran away as opposed to being taken, based on certain missing items that indicate he packed a bag before leaving. Jessica calls Antoine and leaves a voicemail claiming he has won an Xbox and must call back to set up receiving it but some time later, she and Luke are confronted by some men working for the loan shark. Luke strikes a deal with the men so they'll leave him and Jessica alone as they continue their investigation.

Malcolm confronts Luke, concerned that Kilgrave might have gotten to him and not wanting anything to happen to Jessica. Luke tells Malcolm he doesn't know who Kilgrave is, but it's implied he wants to know.

Jessica calls Jeri, saying they need to meet at the prison the following morning. Jeri proposes to her secretary Pam, who will only accept after Jeri has finalised her divorce. Jessica is visited by Luke, who has learned all about Kilgrave and what he did to both Malcolm and Jessica. He is apologetic for how cold he was when she broke their relationship off out of concern for his safety. He wants to make it right but Jessica tells him he didn't do anything wrong. The two resume their relationship. Jessica is called by a Puerto Rican man claiming to be Antoine wanting to claim his prize but Luke tells her afterward that Antoine doesn't have a Puerto Rican accent. A time and place to meet is arranged and Luke reveals that Serena had information on the circumstances surrounding Reva's death. Her information led him to a construction site where he dug to search for something but there was nothing there. In a flashback, we see Jessica digging up a box at that same location under Kilgrave's orders with Reva present. Immediately afterward was when Jessica killed Reva and Kilgrave was hit by the bus. There was some sort of important proof in the box but neither Jessica nor Luke know what it is. Jessica panics when she realises it's three minutes after 10am and hurries into the bathroom to take a selfie and send to Kilgrave. He responds and tells her not to be late again.

Jessica encounter Malcolm in the hall she tells him not to share her history freely with others. She doesn't want to join him at the Kilgrave group meetings because she feels that no matter what her trauma is that there are always others that have it worse. Jessica meets Jeri at the infirmary where Jessica gives her an abortion pill. She orders Jeri to stay with Hope in exchange that Jessica will et some leverage against Jeri's wife, even if it means "dangling her over a ledge". Jeri is pleased by this and agrees.

Kilgrave goes to a suburban home and wants to buy it from the current owner. The man doesn't want to sell it at first and Kilgrave appears to consider using his ability to force them out but instead tells the man that he has calculated the house to be worth approximately $600,000 and offers him a bag of $1.26 million cash, his earnings from the poke game. The man is confused as to why he would be so determined to buy this house for above what it's worth but agrees to have lawyer look over the paperwork Kilgrave gives him, though Kilgrave says that the deal is only good if they move out by the end of the following day. Kilgrave wants this deal to be above board but he still wants it finished quickly.

Jessica and Luke track down Antoine but refuses to hand him over to the men that are after him. She and Luke fight off all the henchmen. Jessica returns Antoine to Serena and demands to get the information that she intended to give to Luke regarding Reva. Luke arrives and takes the file for himself, though Jessica tries to tell him that it won't make things better. Inside the file, Jessica believes Luke will learn that she was involved in Reva's death but instead there is a name of the bus driver. He had been drunk while driving and Luke now blames him for Reva's death and wants revenge. The MTA had covered up the incident and now that driver is still working that route.

Luke gets on the route and watches the driver from his seat till they reach the last stop and all the other passengers have exited the bus. When Luke reveals who he is, the man apologises, saying he's been sober since the accident and wants to make things right. Luke throws his through the front window of the bus and Jessica arrives, telling Luke he can't kill the bus driver. Jessica then reveals that she was the one that killed Reva, sharing how Reva had something Kilgrave wanted and made her tell him where it was and then forced Jessica to dig it up before killing Reva. Luke is outraged and disgusted at Jessica for lying and for starting an intimate relationship with him in the process. Jessica and Luke both realise that Jessica would never have told him the truth if Luke hadn't found out about Charles the bus driver himself.

Malcolm meets with the Kilgrave group and ponders who he truly is. It's unclear if Kilgrave changed who he was as a person, if he unleashed something he already had in him, and whether or not these negative attributes are now an inseparable part of him.

Jeri arranges to take the remains of Hope's miscarriage for herself for some unknown reason.

Kilgrave finalists the deal to buy the house he was after, which is revealed to have been Jessica's childhood home.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E05 "AKA The Sandwich Saved Me" Recap

Flashback to eighteen months ago when Jessica Jones was working a boring office job. She digs up some dirt on her boss, including missing funds in the company which indicates he has gotten involved in embezzlement. She tells him to fire her and give her six months worth of severance pay along with a glowing recommendation in exchange for keeping quiet on what he has done. She goes out for drinks with Trish, who tells her the boredom she feels at all these jobs she's been hopping around to because she's overqualified for them. A man comes over to hit on Trish and makes lude comments to her after recognising her from the "Patsy" TV show she was on in her adolescence. Jessica challenges him to the strength-tester game and says if he wins, she'll take him out back and sexually gratify him but if she wins, he has to pay for their tab and apologise for his behaviour. Of course Jessica beats him and the man pays up with money and an apology. Trish suggests Jessica use her abilities to be a hero but Jessica is reluctant to do so.

In the present day, Jessica is deciding what to do about Malcolm bing the spy for Kilgrave. She follows him to one of his meetings with Kilgrave and stays hidden while watching Malcolm hand over an envelope full of fresh photos. Jessica has a vial of Sufentatil and considers rushing over to attack him but loses her nerve. Jessica determines that Kilgrave was the one who got Malcolm hooked on drugs in the first place and got him to move into an apartment on Jessica's hallway. Trish asks if Jessica will get him out of this situation and Jessica says she will do after she has used him to get to Kilgrave. Jessica continues to follow Malcolm to his meetings and determines that though the park is the same, the more specific location in it varies as Kilgrave commands different people to tell Malcolm where to go each time.

Ruben brings Jessica some banana bread and she stays unfriendly, though she does accept it.

Trish begins a sexual relationship with Will. Jessica discovers this when visiting her to tell her how Kilgrave shifts the location of his meetings with Malcolm each time. Will provides information and strategy for how to successfully approach Kilgrave and take him out but Jessica is determined that Kilgrave must stay alive or else Hope will be doomed. Jessica needs a place to stash Kilgrave after she takes him. Trish will be the getaway driver once she gets a van and Jessica begrudgingly agrees to let Will help too. Will has experience and knowledge from having served as special operations in addition to his now being a police officer. Through his contacts and resources he is able to get Jessica a hermetically sealed room that can be used to keep Kilgrave locked up. Jessica remains in charge, while Will suggests that the next day is too soon to go after Kilgrave and that more time would be better to reinforce the room (which is also soundproof) and though the two still don't get along with each other they are at least on the same page about wanting to stop Kilgrave.

In a flashback, Jessica saves a girl from being hit by a car. Trish makes Jessica a tacky superhero outfit that Jessica has no interest in wearing. Still, Jessica is considering being a hero to help people.

Hope calls Jessica asking her to bring her a cash sum, which Jessica does reluctantly. She tells Trish she's close to catching Kilgrave but Hope remains dejected.

The day of Operation Catch-Kilgrave arrives. Jessica has to distract Kilgrave from seeing Will approaching but Will makes the shot of Sufentanil successfully. Some men emerge that try to help Kilgrave. Malcolm hurries off after apologising to Jessica, saying he "had to". Jessica and Will get Kilgrave into the getaway van but when they reach the building containing the hermetically sealed room, Jessica discovers that Kilgrave is wearing a tracker. Some men arrive that Jessica and Will fight for some time, but are overpowered due to there being too many of them and their being armed with stun batons which had knocked Trish out immediately. The men are able to get Kilgrave's body and drive off but one of them is left behind which leaves an opportunity for interrogation. Trish leaves first, feeling guilty that she couldn't be more helpful. Will wants to torture the man left behind but he doesn't need to. The man was working for a security firm hired to protect Kilgrave. They were hired because Kilgrave knew that Jessica had the surgical drugs and would need a backup plan in place if he was knocked out.

Jessica goes to talk to Malcolm. Kilgrave had got him addicted to drugs not only because it made him more vulnerable so Jessica would be sympathetic to him but because he would be more malleable to do Kilgrave's bidding even if the twelve hour period of his mind control wore off. Kilgrave would give Malcolm more drugs as payment each time he brought photos of Jessica. Malcolm tells Jessica she can't save him again...

Flashback to the first time Jessica saved him. She used her super strength to stop some muggers from killing Malcolm and the display was witnessed by Kilgrave who dismisses the two women he had with him, having grown bored of them. He sets his sights on Jessica, who falls under his mind control and begins a forced relationship with him.

Jessica handcuffs Malcolm to the toilet and reminds him of how he was working towards becoming a social worker before Kilgrave pushed him to become a drug addict. Malcolm is at rock bottom, knowing that he didn't just help Kilgrave because of mind control, but because of the drugs. He thinks Kilgrave will find him and kill him anyway if he tries to get away and begs Jessica to just give him some more drugs. She shares how there was always a small part of her that was mentally fighting to get away from Kilgrave when she was under his control and now she is still fighting. She pushes and challenges Malcolm to fight back, get clean, and live his life again. She then gives him the envelope containing his latest drug payment from Kilgrave and commands him to choose. Malcolm dumps the contents of the envelope onto the toilet lid and looks at it, overcome with anguish.

Hope is attacked by one of her fellow inmates, who pushes her strikes her repeatedly in the gut.

Kilgrave wakes with a bruised face, as Jessica had punched him once for her own pleasure when he was unconscious in the van. He removes one of his back teeth that was knocked loose from the hit. He then calls her and says the experience of a brief loss of power was exhilarating. He also realises that Jessica is angry about Malcolm and carries on talking even when she doesn't give a response. Kilgrave offers to leave Malcolm alone if she does his job for her, by sending a photo of herself smiling every day at 10am. If she agrees to the terms of this new arrangement, she must send a photo right then. She hangs up without giving Kilgrave the satisfaction of hearing her voice. She heads into the bathroom where Malcolm is still sick but has thrown the drugs into the toilet. She then texts Kilgrave a photo of herself and though she isn't smiling in it, Kilgrave is pleased.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E04 "AKA 99 Friends" Recap

Jessica tracks different locations that her Kilgrave-created stalker would have been at to take photos of her. She is relieved that it appears as though the spy never photographed Luke so hopefully he is not on Kilgrave's radar.

Jessica returns to her office where a jewelry designer named Audrey Eastman wants to hire her to track her husband, whom she claims may be cheating on her. Jessica must go to Trish's apartment when she calls in a panic, as Will is trying to break her door down. He brought another office, claiming there's a dead body inside. Jessica says she recognises the look on Will's face, as he believes he killed her. The other officer confirms that Trish is alive and leaves, leaving a confused Will asking how Trish can be all right. Trish pulls her scarf aside to reveal the marks left on her neck from when Will tried to strangle her, saying she isn't all right. Jessica walks Will back outside and explains how she tricked him using the Sufentanil. He wants to help Jessica fight Kilgrave when she explains his abilities but Jessica insists that no police be involved and that he stay out of it. Jessica has Trish apologise to Kilgrave on her radio show to convince him she is afraid of him so he won't go after her again.

Jessica begins tailing Audrey Eastman and double-checks her claims of how she came to be referred to Jessica. Jessica also decides to call Will to ask for access to police surveillance video throughout the city to discover the identity of Kilgrave's spy.

Jeri brings Pam to lunch and they have an encounter with Jeri's wife Wendy, who is horrified that they are having lunch at the restaurant that Jeri proposed to Wendy at. When Pam learns of this, even she is sympathetic to the situation and is taken aback by Jeri's ruthlessness, no longer wanting to have lunch at that restaurant.

Jessica continues monitoring Audrey, wanting to run down the clock of how long it takes for Kilgrave's mind control to wear off to makes sure she isn't someone he sent. She doesn't find any meetings between Audrey and Kilgrave but is shocked when Audrey goes to a run-down property and practices shooting a gun on some mannequins.

Jeri calls in the favor Jessica powers her to insist that Jessica find some leverage Jeri can use against Wendy in the divorce, as Wendy has decided to make the divorce as difficult as possible. Next, Jessica and Jeri must go through all the people claiming that they encountered Kilgrave. Some are just people that got into trouble and are using Kilgrave as an alibi, while others are people that truly did have run-ins with Kilgrave. She and Jeri get into another disagreement when Jeri suggests that Kilgrave's 'gift' could be used for solving problems. Jessica wants to pump information out of the people Kilgrave encountered but also has them exchange information with each other so they can form a support group. Jessica suggest to Will that he join it when he brings her the surveillance footage but he just leaves, not wanting to engage in it. Will later visits Trish and gifts her with a gun (an illegal one), telling her he wants her to feel safe. She won't let him in the apartment so the two talk to each other through her front door's communication system.

Jessica follows Audrey Eastman's husband when he's apparently meeting with a girlfriend. But the so-called girlfriend is actually Audrey herself, waiting with a gun. Audrey wants to kill Jessica after learning about her from Gregory Spheeris, the club-owner Jessica served a subpoena to in the first episode of the season, and tells her husband to get Jessica on the plastic wrap she has set up to dispose of the body. Jessica bluffs that she's bulletproof but Audrey shoots her in the arm and Jessica is injured by it. Audrey's husband would rather they just leave and not try to kill Jessica but Audrey is traumatized by the attack on the city that the Avengers fought in. Audrey's mother died from a falling building and now Audrey projects her anger for the Avengers onto all gifted people. Jessica is furious and says that there are other people traumatised in the world besides her. Jessica had asked about Kilgrave but Audrey didn't know who he was, asking how many more there were like her. Jessica states that she knows of 99 other gifted people in their borough alone and that now all of them will know about Audrey and what she has done. Jessica also threatens to go the police and orders Audrey to disappear or else they will all come after her. After Jessica leaves, Audrey's husband tells her he wants a divorce.

Trish and Will are still talking on opposite sides of her front door, finding common ground in their trauma from Kilgrave's havoc. Trish eventually lets Will into her apartment, saying she might shoot him by accident. He says it's worth the risk.

Jessica goes to the support group of Kilgrave's victims and learns from one of them that Kilgrave met with someone every day at ten in the morning at the same location to get pictures from them. She uses this information to check the surveillance footage of that location and discovers that the person spying for Kilgrave is Malcolm, her drug addicted neighbour.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E03 "AKA It's Called Whiskey" Recap

Jessica and Luke enjoy the revelation at how strong the other is, as they consummate their casual relationship with new vigor. They can smash into walls and doorways without concern that letting go could kill the other person. They are momentarily interrupted, however, when Ruben appears at the front door to say that Robyn is complaining that they're too loud. Jessica had accidentally left the door ajar and Ruben appears sheepish at having interrupted their good time. Later, Luke and Jessica ponder if there's more people like them in the world. They know about the Avengers, as that team is well-established for having allowed their world-saving doings to end up on the news. Luke doesn't want to be a hero because it would only put a target on his back. Jessica admits she tried being a hero once but claims that it didn't work out, and that the good she did wasn't enough to cancel out her bad deeds. They hook up again and break the legs on Luke's bed. Jessica finds the picture of Reba in Luke's mirror again and when he catches her, he says that Reba died in a bus crash. Jessica leaves shortly after.

Jessica overhears some radio chatter discussing Hope's case. The public is not only aware of her crimes but her claim that a gifted man used mind control to force her to kill her parents. Many people do not believe this and pass their own judgements on the crime. Jessica wants Jeri to get out there to stop the media chatter that's crucifying Hope. Jeri confronts Jessica about being one of Kilgrave's victims, having learned about it from Hope. Jessica doesn't want to expose her personal experiences out in the open for people to commentate on, and says doing so won't help Hope. Jeri doesn't want to risk her reputation or safety by going in front of the media to publicly declare that Kilgrave's mind control is real, adding that her doing so would only harm Hope's chances of fairing well in the trial. Jessica goes to Trish to ask her to talk to Hope about Kilgrave on her radio show. Jessica is shocked by Trish's injuries and asks if this new training regimen is all part of her new kick, which includes the steel, enforced doors. Trish's apartment has had many upgrades that have made it a borderline-impenetrable fortress.

Jessica visits Jeri's wife Wendy to try to get some Sufentanil, a powerful anesthetic to use against Kilgrave. It's a surgical anesthesia that Wendy doesn't want to give to drug-addicts, not believing Jessica's claims for why she wants to use it. Wendy prescribes Jessica an anti-psychotic instead. Jessica even offers to be Wendy's ally in her divorce with Jeri but Wendy believes that she and Jeri will be able to get through the difficulties in their marriage. Jessica considers knocking out various hospital staff members to steal the Sufentanil but decides against it. Trish calls Jessica and lets her know she's spoken with Jeri and they've coordinated a scheduled time for Hope to call in and be interviewed about Kilgrave on her show. Jessica is worried, knowing that Kilgrave will be listening in to the broadcast.

Jessica visits Luke to hook up again but also to ask if he knows any drug dealers to get her Sufentanil. Luke knows that Jessica has been hiding something but she doesn't tell him the true secret she has lying in wait. Instead, Jessica introduces the topic of Kilgrave, referring back to a conversation they had about other gifted individuals being out there. He knows about Hope's case and her claims. She doesn't tell him about Kilgrave by name or that she was one of his victims, but says that she believes Hope's claims.

It's Hope's interview day and she speaks on the phone calling in to Trish's show while Jeri sits across from her in the interrogation day. Jeri claims that Hope is delusional and clearly believes these delusions. Trish defends Hope, claiming that there may be others out there. Jeri says that anyone else that was controlled by Kilgrave is welcome to contact her office but she sticks with the angle that Hope is delusional, believing it to be the best strategy for Hope to achieve the best possible outcome of her trial. Trish begins to insult Kilgrave on air while Jessica pleads with her to stop, fearing for her safety and the reaction that these insults will provoke out of Kilgrave. Kilgrave then calls in and calmly suggests that if a person exists that has these abilities she is speaking of that provoking them might be dangerous. Jessica is alarmed and escorts Trish out of the building. Trish uses her self-defense skills to injure a man that approaches her on the way out but is apologetic when realizing it was just a fan wanting her autograph.

Jessica brings Trish back to her apartment/fortress and tells her to stay inside and keep the door locked until she gets back. Jessica finds out that the doctor that performed Kilgrave's operation resigned from his position and went on the run. Jessica finds Ruben in the hallway helping their drug-addict neighbor Malcolm, who wandered into Ruben and Robyn's apartment by mistake. Jessica brings Malcolm to the hospital and uses him to create a distraction so she can sneak into a supply room and steal some vials of Sufentanil.

Trish is visited by a police sergeant, Will Simpson, who says he needs to question her about the assault that happened at the radio station. She asks to see his identification, which he holds up to the camera system she has that allows her to see who's at her door without letting them in. She says she won't speak without a lawyer and he says that he can return with a warrant but that would mean everything would end up in the news. She eventually opens the door and then he attacks her, having been mind-control-ordered by Kilgrave to kill her. The two fight but she isn't strong or skilled enough to beat him. Jessica arrives when Will is choking Trish and shoves him off of her. Jessica injects Trish with a dose of Sufentanil and pretends she is dead, getting outraged at Will to trick him into thinking he fulfilled his command. She chases him into the hallways and slips a phone into his pocket to track him, as he warns her that Kilgrave says it's not her time.

Jessica follows Will and eavesdrops on his conversation with Kilgrave. She is prepared to take out Kilgrave with the Sufentanil but most prioritise saving Will when Kilgrave orders him to walk off the balcony of the apartment to fall to his death. Jessica and Kilgrave make eye contact with each other after she pulls Will off the balcony's edge and she flashes back to the night of Reba's death. Kilgrave had told Jessica, "Take care of her." Jessica followed through by punching Reba in the chest which sent her flying into the road, dead. Jessica was shocked from the trauma of the incident, walking over to Reba's body, checking for her well-being, and beginning to walk off after confirming she was dead. Kilgrave told her to leave Reba and come back to him, following after Jessica into the road where he was hit by a bus. Jessica has to stop Will once again knocks his head into a wall to knock him unconscious and stop him from walking off the balcony.

Jessica goes back inside the apartment in search of Kilgrave and is confronted by the original residents of it, who attack Jessica under Kilgrave's orders, to stop Jessica from following him. She puts a teenage boy in a headlock to knock him out after he attacks her with a baseball bat. She then fends off an attack from the father of the household that's wielding a knife, knocking him out kicking him into a wall. Then the mother attacks and she's knocked out too. Jessica's attentions are then drawn to a printing room in the apartment which is plastered with photos of her. One of them bears an ominous message, "See you later". She saves Will by pretending to fall off the rooftop with him into a pile of garbage bags. He's unconscious when she does this so he's none the wiser and believes her claims that he carried out Kilgrave's orders. Jessica asks him if Kilgrave took the photos of her and Will says he didn't and doesn't know if the family in the apartment did either. As he begins to remember what happened, he is confused as to why he would do what Kilgrave said and horrified at the thought that he killed Trish. She tells him that no one died and to go home and patch himself up.

Jessica visits Luke to end their relationship, saying he's been through too much for her to bring everything she is going through to further burden him. Luke believes that she simply can't handle the fact that he had a wife who died, not knowing that this is true but not in the way she thinks. Jessica takes one of the photographs and tries to piece together the location on the street it was taken from, ready to hunt down whomever Kilgrave has sent to spy on her.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E02 "AKA Crush Syndrome" Recap

Jessica Jones must answer questions from Detective Oscar Clemons, who is investigating Hope's murder of her parents. Jessica is honest about being hired to find Hope but omits the mind control powers of Kilgrave and her prior relationship with him. Clemons went into Jessica's apartment and enquires about her photos of Luke Cage but she has nothing more to say to him and he cannot legally force her to stay at the station so she leaves. She heads to Luke's bar where he finished being questioned by police officers. She tries to explain what has happened to Luke but he wants to know why she took pictures of him. He knows she took pictures of him and she claims to have been hired by a woman's husband who suspected that his wife was cheating on him with Luke. Luke was unaware that the woman (Gina) he was seeing was married, as he never would've knowingly gotten involved in drama. Jessica is sorry for having cause trouble for Luke but he tells her to leave. After returning back to her apartment, Jessica ponders how Kilgrave managed to cheat death.

Jessica visits Hope in jail and questions her about Kilgrave, intent on tracking him down and determining what his plans are. Hope shares how Kilgrave used to make her jump as high as she could for hours, as the long jump was one of her main events in school. Kilgrave always compared Hope to Jessica and Hope is overcome knowing that her brother is now alone. Hope stars that Kilgrave wants to make Jessica suffer for leaving him to die. Hope tells Jessica she should kill herself and Jessica reminds her that she's the only that knows Hope is innocent.

Jessica visits Jeri Hogarth and pushes her to take Hope's case and represent her. Jeri is skeptical about Jessica's tales of mind control and doesn't want to take on a case that will lose. Jessica promises Jeri she'll owe her favor if she agrees to take on Hope's case and Jeri seems to reluctantly agree on the condition that Jessica prove Kilgrave's mind control is real. Meanwhile Jeri's assistant/lover Pam informs her that she needs to talk to her wife because she knows about the affair.

Jessica's sister Trish tracks her down and is insistent that they talk. When Trish comes back to Jessica's place she is concerned about the broken door. Jessica fills Trish in about Kilgrave being alive and wanting to come after Jessica. Trish doesn't want to see Jessica fall victim to his mind control again but Jessica assures her that she would die before letting that happen again. Trish wants Jessica to be safe but Jessica knows that Kilgrave could send anyone after her at any time so she wants to take this fight on alone to keep Trish from ending up as collateral damage.

Gina visits Luke Cage, who tells her he doesn't want to continue their relationship now that he knows she is married. He also tells her that her husband hired Jessica Jones to investigate him, shocking her since thought he didn't know about her affair. She leaves in a hurry to confront him.

Jessica sorts through some newspaper clippings of hers about a bus accident and the death of a woman named Reva Connors, the same woman whose photograph was in Luke Cage's mirror. Her concentration is disrupted by more thumping and yelling from the apartment above hers so she goes upstairs to confront the neighbors. A man opens the door while keeping the chain lock on and she tells him to shut up, but then a woman in the apartment begins yelling at Jessica aggressively while the man remains more quiet and easy-going about the encounter. When the woman tells Jessica to go to hell, Jessica breaks through the chain, pulls the woman into the hallway and holds her against the wall by the throat, telling her to keep the noise down.

Jessica has a flashback of having blood on her hands and walking away from Kilgrave, who is screaming at her to come back to him. He follows her into the street and then gets hit by a bus. She returns to the place where Kilgrave was hit and tracks down the nearest hospital. She gets a call from Trish which she sends to voicemail, steals a pair of scrubs, and gets into the hospital system to track down the ambulance driver that had picked Kilgrave up after his accident.

Jessica attacks a man with some tools at her apartment but stops and apologises when she finds out Trish had sent him to fix her door. She gets into an argument with Trish, upset that Trish is injecting herself into Jessica's life. Trish also has some marks and bruises on her arms and her assistant advises her to put her blazer on to hide them from her boss. Trish is prepared to pay the man's medical bills to ensure he doesn't press charges against Jessica for the assault but hangs up when Jessica lashes out by comparing Trish to her mother. The man from upstairs apologises to Jessica for his fraternal twin sister Robyn's behaviour and is in awe of Jessica's strength. His overall demeanor suggests that he's harmless, even if Jessica didn't have superhuman strength. Later, Jessica smashes a subway window when she has a flashback of Kilgrave yelling at her.

Jessica reaches Jack Denton's home, the ambulance driver that picked up Kilgrave. His mother is there and angry at the city for turning their backs on him. Jack was denied worker's comp because he had seemingly stolen the ambulance that night, but Jessica knows that he only must have done so under Kilgrave's order. She is brought inside where a wounded Jack is on a dialysis machine. He suffered a stroke after donating both of his kidney to Kilgrave. He was found nearly dead in an alleyway after losing both of his kidneys and now his mother cares for him. The dialysis machine was donated anonymously so Jessica asks for a glass of water so that she can take a better look at the machine. She snaps some photos of the registry number on it. She speaks to Jack and tells him God didn't do this, but the Devil did, promising to find him. Jack tries to write something out to Jessica. When he first writes the letters "KIL" she thinks he's writing Kilgrave's name and asks if he knows where Kilgrave is. But instead, he writes out that he wants her to kill him. He is upset that she won't put him out his misery but Jessica doesn't want to kill an innocent victim, even out of mercy.

Jessica encounters the neighbors in the hallway. Robyn warns her to stay away from her brother Ruben, while Ruben is friendly and says hello.

Jessica is visited by Gina, who had confronted her husband about hiring Jessica but since he never did so, all she need up doing was revealing the affair to him. Gina reveals that her husband Andre and friends from his rugby league are heading to Luke's bar to rough him up. Jessica hurries there and observes Luke easily fighting off the men, displaying significant strength. She joins the fight to help him and he is intrigued to observe her super-strength too. Jessica is shocked to see Luke be completely unharmed when one of the men tries to stab him with a broken bottle. As it turns out, Luke Cage has unbreakable skin. He is still annoyed with her though and sends her away, despite his intrigue at her strength.

Jessica gets a call the following morning about the dialysis machine. She tracks down the operating doctor that donated it to Jack Denton and shows up to a lecture he is giving, slipping in to sit down in the back. When he observes her, he runs out and Jessica chases after him. Once Jessica catches him, the doctor reveals how he performed the operation on Kilgrave under his command and refused any anesthesia during it, which reveals to Jessica that doing so would've blocked Kilgrave's mind control. He agrees to testify for hope, and Jessica calls Jeri Hogarth so he can recount his experience. Jeri agrees to represent Hope and visits her in prison, telling her that there are other victims of Kilgrave's mind control and asks Hope to tell her story.

Jessica calls Trish and the two make up after their argument. Jessica asks to meet for drinks but Trish says she can't because she has a session with her trainer. Trish suggests that they grab lunch later in the week and after finishing her call, is shown to be training rigorously in self-defense which is the cause of her injuries.

Kilgrave goes to an apartment and tells the family there he'll be staying their indefinitely. He tells the children to get in the closet and stay there quietly. The parents serve him dinner while Jessica mulls over the latest revelation she has learned about Kilgrave's weakness. She exits her shower and finds Luke Cage waiting for her in bedroom. He says that now they know about each other's abilities. He thinks that she already knew about them before the fight but she says she had only come there to fix things. He pulls out a sandblaster and uses it on his skin, but there isn't a scratch or mark to be seen from it. She moves closer and touches it, awed as Luke tells her he is unbreakable.

Marvel's Jessica Jones S01E01 "AKA Ladies Night" Recap

Meet Jessica Jones. She's the brooding protagonist of this latest Marvel property and she works as a private investigator. She frequently is hired to get dirt on people like cheating spouses, which sometimes doesn't go over so well when the person hiring her finds out bad news they weren't ready to know about. But it's nothing her super strength can't handle, as she's more than capable of throwing an angry man threw her office door's window.

Jessica visits the stone-cold lawyer Jeri Hogarth whom she frequently collaborates with. When she needs something handled with muscle in a morally grey area, she will reach out to Jessica for help. The latest assignment is to issue a subpoena to a strip club owner named Gregory Spheeris. Jessica has a propensity for melancholy, the source of which will be explored as the season progresses. She drinks to self-medicate the traumas from ghosts of her past. Mind you these are figurative ghosts; this series may exist in a larger universe of superpowered beings like Jessica but we've yet to encounter any literal ghosts.

Jessica decides to go out in the middle of the night when she can't sleep. She arms herself with her camera and spies on people in the building across the street. One of the men in the building is Luke Cage, a man whom Jessica's past and future is intertwined with though she has yet to formally meet him. Cage goes on a date and Jessica carries on observing from her fire-escape perch. She hears a voice of a man named Kilgrave (David Tennant) telling her she "wants to do it." It's possible this is a symbol of her struggles with depression and perhaps even suicidal thoughts. Another swig from her flask and a mantra about Main Street is enough to quiet the voice.

The following morning Jessica wakes from the voices of neighbors yelling in the apartment above her. Her mood is worsened when she finds that her phone charger wasn't plugged in. There's rustling in her apartment and when she goes out into the living room she finds her neighbor Malcolm. He's a drug addict and wandered into her apartment by mistake while intoxicated. When she goes to show him out, there is a couple waiting for her help. Barbara and Bob Schlottman are a nice couple from the midwest searching for their missing daughter Hope. Hope was a university student with a bright future ahead of her but now they have no idea where she is or what has happened to her. Bob's coping mechanism is to fuss with trying to fix Jessica's broken door while Barbara explains the details of the case and how she started acting differently before disappearing entirely.

Jessica takes the case and looks into the Schlottman family and Hope herself. Hope was not only driven academically but a star member of the track team. Through a trail of bread crumbs on social media, Jessica goes to Hope's former place of residence to question Hope's ex-roommate. Hope had told her to sell all of her belongings for some extra cash but the new roommate tells Jessica there's a box of Hope's old stuff still left in the closet. Hope started seeing a man and became infatuated with him.

In between working on the Hope Schlottman case, Jessica tracks down Gregory Spheeris for Jeri Hogarth. He's driving fast in an expensive car but Jessica catches him at a stop sign. She tries to get his attention but he attempts to drive off. Jessica stops him by holding the rear bumper of the car. Spheeris is frightened by Jessica's superhuman strength and threatens to expose her if she lays a hand on him but Jessica tells him that there's no point in threatening such action because the world doesn't want to know about people like her and are more content to stay ignorant. She serves him the subpoena and returns home where she has another nightmare of Kilgrave, who licks her face before she wakes up and begins her mantra of reciting street names. Her tormented anguish is palpable.

Jeri Hogarth calls Jessica, mildly displeased that Jessica threatened Spheeris with her "laser eyes" (Jessica doesn't have any abilities involving laser eyes) but content that the task was completed. She assures Jessica that payroll will issue her payment for the job. It is also revealed that Jeri is having an affair with her assistant Pam despite being married to a woman named Wendy Ross-Hogarth.

Jessica passes by the bar Luke Cage owns. He's seen her around the neighborhood though she's never come into the bar. He doesn't know about her spying on him though. He offers her free alcohol as part of a fabricated "Ladies Night" promotion to entice her into coming in but doesn't pressure her with any sort of aggressive tactics. The two get to talking as she spends the evening drinking in his bar till it's last call. The two engage in a slow flirtation that culminates in them going home together for sex. Jessica tries to encourage him to be more aggressive with his lovemaking, assuring her he won't break but he is insistent that she will if he isn't careful. Afterwards, Jessica finds a photo of a woman tucked into Luke's bathroom mirror and is shaken by this discovery. She exits the bathroom, redresses, apologises to Luke, and leaves. She throws up on the street outside. There is a whole wealth of backstory context to this scene that won't be revealed till later episodes.

Barbara Schlottman calls to check on Jessica's progress. Hope made some recent charges on a credit card her parents gave her for emergencies only. Jessica tracks the stores in which the card was used. There's expensive lingerie and other clothing being bought. The search leads her to a familiar Chinese restaurant. The restaurant used to be an Italian restaurant that Jessica has been to before. Upon questioning the staff, Jessica realises that the man that Hope was here with was Kilgrave, who had taken Jessica to that same restaurant before.

Jessica's world is shaken up hard by this revelation, as she had believed Kilgrave was dead. Jessica is suffering from PTSD and a cocktail of other issues from her traumatic relationship with Kilgrave. Jessica questions the Schlottmans about how they found her and deduces that Kilgrave was the one that advised them to seek out Jessica for help. Jessica tells them they should leave immediately and tries to book a flight to get out of the country but she lacks the funds for it. She calls Jeri, hoping for a loan but Jeri says that those aren't the terms of their business arrangement.

Jessica pays a visit to Trish Walker, who runs a successful radio talk show. Trish is also Jessica's foster-sister. The two haven't spoken in some time and Trish is upset that Jessica shut her out for so long. Jessica tells Trish that Kilgrave is back but Trish thinks it's just her PTSD as she had already seen Kilgrave's death certificate a year ago. Jessica convinces Trish of Kilgrave's return and tells her about Hope Schlottman. Trish wants to call the police but Jessica talks her out of it since they can't do anything to stop him. Jessica wants Trish to loan her money so she can run away but Trish advises her to stay and help Hope. Kilgrave has the ability to perform mind control on people and Jessica is concerned that it's too dangerous for Kilgrave to get his control over Jessica again. Jessica is determined to run so Trish relents and gives her the money. Jessica gets more voicemails from Hope's parents, pleading for answers on their daughter's whereabouts. Jessica knows that Kilgrave is repeating a pattern of lingerie, clothes, a restaurant, and staying in a particular hotel room. This was something he did with Jessica and is now repeating on Hope.

Jessica decides to help Hope so she goes to the hotel and pulls the fire alarm. She approaches a particular room, experiencing flashes of her past while doing so. She enters and finds that Kilgrave is nowhere to be found. Hope is lying in the bed, unmoving. She has urinated the bed due to Kilgrave commanding her to stay put. Jessica calls Hope's parents and instructs them to come to her office and be prepared to get away. Jessica has to use all her superhuman strength to get Hope out of the room, as Hope screams, claws, and fights to stay in the bed because of Kilgrave's mind-control. Jessica tells Hope that Kilgrave's mind control wears off with enough distance and time. Hope is emotionally traumatized, saying he made her do things she never would have done otherwise. Jessica instructs Hope on how to make her own mantra of street names to help her calm down when she feels like she is spiraling.

When Hope is reunited with her parents, they are all overjoyed. Jessica advises them to go back to Omaha immediately and to not look back. Hope thanks Jessica for saving her life and Jessica promises she'll be right behind them, still intent on leaving the country to escape Kilgrave. Jessica has a terrible realization when walking down the hallway towards the elevator, seeing Hope pull a gun from her bag. The elevator doors close before Jessica can get in and when she reaches tit at the ground floor, Hope has shot both of her parents dead. A still-brainwashed Hope smiles eerily and tells Jessica to smile, an echo of a flashback Jessica had of Kilgrave telling her to smile at their anniversary dinner. A few seconds pass, and Hope collapses, horrified and distraught at having killed her parents. Jessica walks out of the building, overcome that she failed to fully save Hope and her family. She considers getting into a taxi and escaping but instead turns back to re-enter the building, determined to do something about Kilgrave.
