Chef DVD Review: Favreau has gone back to basics, with delicious results.

With an all-star cast, Chef proves to yet again that Jon Favreau’s heart truly belongs to Indie flicks rather than the big action Superhero movies that he also tackles with flare. Like the character he plays in “Chef,” Favreau has gone back to basics, with delicious results. The delectable foods that Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) crafts are showcased with close-up shots, but the true heart of the film is the family bonding that although predictable at times is handled with perfect sentimentality.

Losing the struggle for balance between being a divorced dad and being one of LA’s hottest chefs, Carl has become dissatisfied with life. Carl envisions dumping the bland affair his demanding boss (Dustin Hoffman) wants, and infusing his menu with the Cuban flare he dreams of. His sous chef Tony (Bobby Cannavale), scrappy line cook Martin (John Leguizamo) and sometime girlfriend Molly (Scarlet Johansson), the restaurant’s laid back hostess all urge him to make the change, and go with his heart.
It all comes to a head, the night influential restaurant blogger Ramsey Michel (Oliver Platt) dines there. Bullied into recycling an old menu, Ramsey utterly eviscerates Carl, which starts a twitter war.  Carl isn’t so tech savvy though and things quickly spiral out of control, resulting in him packing up his knives and walking out of his cushy job to figure out what to do next.
Carl finds himself in Miami where his rich ex-wife, Inez (Sofia Vergara), hopes he can rediscover the joy of cooking and maybe even reconnect with their son, Percy (Emjay Anthony). He’s able to do both with the help of his ex’s ex (Robert Downey Jr.) who lends him the money for a greasy old food truck. Taking Percy along as his sous-chef they embark on a cross country trip back to LA bonding while Carl finds his cooking groove.

Favreau has assembled a terrific cast for a road trip that is exuberant and heartfelt, all set to a great soundtrack. Newcomer Anthony holds his own against the seasoned vets of the cast. Leguizamo and Vergara are fantastic in their supporting roles, and Johannson’s small part is just enough to add flavor without overwhelming.

On the Blu-ray there aren’t a whole lot of extras. It’s the usual deleted scenes and commentary from Jon Favreau who wrote and directed Chef, along with co-producer and chef Roy Choi, but the commentary is both fun and insightful.

Iron Man 3 trailer

Yesterday we were teased with a poster and some new stills, but Marvel held back the trailer, but the wait is over. It's finally here and it looks pretty darn good!

Watch the first official trailer for Marvel's "Iron Man 3" coming to theaters May 3rd 2013, starring Robert Downey Jr. In Marvel's "Iron Man 3", brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man played by Robert Downey Jr., is pitted against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds.

When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 continues the epic adventures of "Iron Man" and "Iron Man 2", starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, "Iron Man 3" is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel's iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of "Tales of Suspense" (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with "The Invincible Iron Man" (#1) in May of 1968.

Iron Man 3 Poster and Images

First they released the official Synopsis, and now there's a poster! I for one am excited for Iron Man 3!

Check back tomorrow for the trailer, which I'm sure is going to be pure awesome. Until then, you'll have to be satisfied with the poster of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and his Hall of Armor.

Iron Man 3  is in theaters May 3, 2013.

In addition to Iron Man 3, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013; Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014; Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014; the untitled Marvel's The Avengers sequel on May 1, 2015; and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

Update: Six images along with commentary by Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige were released today as well!

Iron Man 3 Photo 1
"Tony basically loses all of his toys and is forced to just use his mind to rebuild and to face his biggest enemy."

iron Man 3 Photo 2
"He's ultimately the engineering superhero. He's so charming and so flamboyant that sometimes you forget that's what he is: 'Hey, kids, learn this stuff and you can maybe build an Iron Man suit.' "

Iron man 3 Photo 3
"While he is a charming guy, it is often hard to root for a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist because they seem to have it all. In this movie, we are again going to see him stripped down more than we've ever seen him since he was in that cave, again with his back against the wall and with nothing but his wits to help him survive."

Iron Man 3 Photo 4
"That's one of the things we love about (Tony). It is not a new girl in every film. Pepper Potts is an incredibly important part of his life and his evolution as a hero. She plays a very big part in this film."

Iron Man 3 Photo 5
"It's an example of what Robert Downey Jr.'s always said: 'Leave nothing on the field.' He always gives it 100% but I think he's given 120% on this one. Robert is in almost every scene, which, when you haveRobert, is not a bad thing. The goal with Iron Man 3 is to again prove that all of our single heroes are as interesting alone as they are when they're all together in an Marvel's The Avengers movie."

Iron Man 3 Photo 6
"Now we see he's invented a technology that allows him to basically have the suit arrive to him anywhere at any time, piece by piece. And it doesn't always work at first."

COWBOYS AND ALIENS: A PERFECT BLEND

Release Date: July 29, 2011
Running Time: 118 mins

A fantastic movie, brilliant cast, great script, and a perfect blend of special effects. Cowboys & Aliens really isn’t an alien movie. In fact, the aliens have kind of a small part, and that’s one reason why this movie works.

It’s the story of people from a small western town. Like most generic westerns, there’s a stranger with no memory, a cattle rancher who runs the town, his spoiled son, oppressed town folk, a mysterious woman, and a crime. The crime just happens to be someone abducting the town’s people. The reluctant stranger joins a posse to find the missing and their abductors. The abductors could easily have been a rival cattle rancher or Indians, but this is a Jon Favreau film, and his abductors are aliens.

Another reason for success is brilliant casting, Daniel Craig (Jake Lonergan), Harrison Ford (Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde), Olivia Wilde (Ella Swenson), Sam Rockwell (Doc), Clancy Brown (Meacham), and Keith Carradine (Sheriff John Taggert). All the actors play their roles straight. No camp, no hysterics, no “this can’t be happening,” no one screaming “aliens!” The focus is the story of losing loved ones and how the people deal with it. They don’t really care who or what took their families, they just want them back alive. There just happens to be several minutes with aliens.

The script works by using its comical retorts in just the right places, not too much, but just enough to lighten the story, and none of it having to do with the aliens. For the most part the script is serious and takes advantage of Craig and Ford as the leads, or maybe it’s the other way around. Craig and Ford seem to enjoy being foes, using minimal banter and a lot of stare downs. The script also gives us many mysteries; the shackle on Jake's wrist, his past, who is he? Who is Ella, why is she interested in Jake (like she needs a reason)? Who took the town's people?

The director, Jon Favreau, also uses the perfect marriage of animatronics and CGI. Favreau takes us back to the great movies that use puppeteers and animatronics, while also mixing ground breaking digital effects. That also applies to his clever directing. He could just show us the creatures from the beginning, have them jump out and start grabbing people, trying the shock factor. But that would have blown the movie. Sure we want to see what the aliens look like, but again, that’s not the major part of the movie. Instead, we see strange lights in the sky. Then a mechanical flying machine, a shadow of a long arm, noises in the dark. All this builds the suspense of just what are these creatures. Next we see a long-fingered, clawed hand, then, finally, the creature.

The suspense continues throughout the entire 118 minutes. For example, in the bar scene, lawmen ask Jake to come with them. Jake, who really doesn’t say much in the movie, just leans back and waits; no sounds, no dialog. After a long minute or two, a lawman twitches and Craig reacts.

Cowboys and Aliens is not a scary horror movie. Favreau uses a perfect blend of all his resources to make a suspenseful, entertaining, light-hearted movie that all ages will enjoy.

COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU

When I was at that movies this weekend, I saw trailers for movies I didn't care about, movies I can't wait for, and those inbetween. Some, I still don't care about, but I was surprised by some that I had written off. So I decided to discuss those that interested me.

Zookeeper
Release Date: July 8th 2011
L
Looks like the classic boy has a shallow girlfriend, boy loses said girl, boy tries to get girl back movie. The difference with this movie? Kevin James and talking animals. Kevin James is a zookeeper who thinks about changing jobs to get his ex-girlfriend back. The animals want him to stay, so they decide to break their silence and help him get her back. The dialogue could make or break this movie, but the animals look freakin’ adorable and Kevin James is hil-ar-i-ous. The more previews I see, the more I want to see this movie. I just hope the studio held back some of the funny scenes for the movie.

Captain America
Release date: July 22nd 2011

So far, I’ve seen all the movies leading up to The Avengers (scheduled for release in 2012).
Hulk - Ok
Iron Man 1 & 2 – Great
Thor – Awesome
Captain America - ???
I’ve seen snippets and I’m not impressed. A soldier in red, white, and blue uniform battles alongside regularly dressed soldiers. Not too amazing.
Today I saw a longer trailer. I have to say, I’m more impressed. Seems Tony Stark’s Father is involved with making Capt. America. A scrawny guy, Steve Rogers, gets turned down for enlistment in the army. He then volunteers for an experiment to make a super soldier. This film just got way more interesting to me. Now the wait is on.

Straw Dogs
Release date: September 16th 2011

Another movie I wasn’t excited about. I always figured I’d see because Alexander Skarsgard (Generation Kill, True Blood) stars in it. I like James Marsden also, but not enough to run to the box office. The synopsis just didn’t grab me. A screenwriter moves with his wife to her hometown in the Deep South. The locals and ex-boyfriend start to stir up trouble and the couple have to fight for their lives. Then I saw the trailer. Wow, the filming, directing, and acting shown appears much better than the written scenario. This is one I definitely will see.

Cowboys and Aliens
Release date: July 29th 2011

What can I say? Director Jon Favreau, Actors Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Clancy Brown, Walton Goggins, and Keith Carradine. What could be bad? Well, ok, we’ve seen big budget films with well-known actors flop in the past. I doubt this will be one of them.
Arizona Territory, 1873, a stranger with no memory and an odd wrist shackle stumble into a town that doesn’t welcome him. Then, something about aliens grabbing people and fighting ensues. C’mon, it’s Jon Favreau and Daniel Craig. This promises to be a fun journey discovering who Craig’s character is with lots of action and stuff blowing up. It’s Jon Favreau; there will always be some comedy along with the absurd. That’s what makes his films great.
