11^th Annual San Diego Film Festival – September 26-30, 2012

San Diego, CA, -- September 12, 2012 – The San Diego Film Foundation announced today the headline and premiere films for the 2012 San Diego Film Festival.   Sifting through 1,300 submissions from over 55 countries, the official films represent a broad spectrum of gripping narratives. Infused with new leadership and capital, the San Diego Film Festival is poised to raise this year’s profile with nearly 200 film screenings; including 11 World Premieres, 16 WestCoast Premieres, and 4 US premieres.  

Headline Films for the 2012 San Diego Film Festival include the Opening Night Premiere of Wayne Blair’s story of love, friendship, and music in The Sapphires as well as the Spotlight Film The Oranges, directed by Julian Farino, with an all-star cast including Hugh Laurie, Leighton Meester, Catherine Keener, and Allison Janey. The San Diego Film Festival is scheduled for Wednesday, September 26, 2012 – Sunday, September 30, 2012.  For the first time, the Festival will be held at two venues: the Reading Theater in the Gaslamp Quarter (701 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, 92101), and the Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla, Sherwood Auditorium (700 Prospect Street, La Jolla, 92037). Tickets start at $14 for pre-sale/$16 at the door, and go up to $75 for a one day pass, and range up to $500 for a Festival VIP Pass to all screenings, premieres, events, and panels on all days.  A dramatic expansion this year, Festival organizers anticipate hosting over 100 film screenings.

Ghouls, zombies, slashers, and their victims mulled around The Seattle Hilton in Seatac, WA this past Memorial Day weekend.  Even biohazard clean-up made a showing.  All this fan fair and cosplay are part of Crypticon Seattle 2012.

Fans came to see some horror favorites like Dee Wallace (The Howling, ET, Critters, Cujo), Don Bradley (Pinhead from the Hellraiser franchise), Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, The Beastmaster), and Richard Kiel (Jaws from James Bond movies) just to name a few.  Many also attended and/or participated in a make-up contest, writing contest, and live action role playing.  There was also an indie film festival and short film festival for those cinema geeks.

Then, there were the vendors.  Tattoo artists, authors, handmade steampunk hats, zombie shoes, graphic t-shirts, puppets, make-up, massage, and Biohazard Party room.  My favorite, Lawn of Living Dead, has three different zombified gnomes for your lawn.  If you worry the birds will be scared away, think Halloween time.

Dee Wallace is an iconic actor known mainly for horror films.  The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, E.T. The Extraterrestrial (ok, not horror), Critters, Cujo, and The Frightners, just to name a few.  But type casting her as a Horror Heroine seems a little unfair to me. She has appeared in over 90 feature films and guest starred in many TV series and TV movies.  Wallace also attends conventions were she can meet her fans and healing seminars around the world.  More on that later.

I was fortunate enough to meet Ms. Wallace at Crypticon Seattle.  The first thing I notice as I walked toward her booth is her smile.  As romance authors often write; her lips curled, til her smile met her eyes.  That statement is so true.  I thought to myself; she looks like a child who just saw the ice cream truck for the first time this year, and there wasn’t even anyone at her booth yet.

My geeky fan girl came out.  I couldn’t help it.  I was actually talking with Dee Wallace.  After the 10-15 minutes it took for me to pick the perfect picture for her to sign, I stood to the side and waited for other fans to leave so I could ask a few questions for the blog.  She remembered my name which threw me off a bit (I’m glad I wrote my questions down).  Many celebrities will remember a face, but names are rare.  She was more than generous giving another 10 minutes of her time.

I asked Wallace what was her favorite movie to work on?  “The Howling,” she said with no hesitation.  “Chris (Stone) and I were engaged at the time and we just had a blast.”  Christopher Stone, who she married, also shared the screen with Wallace in Cujo.   

The Howling was my first werewolf movie.  I shared how astonished I was with the special effects, especially showing the nose elongate on screen.  Remember, this was before CGI.  Wallace added her werewolf at the end was completely animatronic which many people don’t know.  She also had some difficulty with her contacts which were painted with 14 ct. gold and hard to wear.

Her next project to hit the big screen is Lord of Salem directed and written by Rob Zombie and also starring Udo Kier, Maria Conchita Alonso, Clint Howard and Sid Haig.  No release date yet.

Who doesn’t love The Beastmaster?  I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve watched it.  Marc Singer was the coolest; talking with animals & slaughtering the Jun Horde was just awesome. How could my viewing pleasure be any better?

Crypticon Seattle topped all my previous viewings with a screening featuring live commentary with director Don Coscarelli, Crypticon board member Steve Lange, and Seattle comedians Emmett Montgomery and Elicia Sanchez.

It started out as fun facts and turned into a home show version of Mystery Science Theater.  Besides adding little known facts like a guy at an S & M shop designed the costumes and claws for the mindless Death Guards, there were also hysterical comments throughout.  For example, during the scene where Tanya Roberts falls and her butt shows.   Don comments, “I always liked that shot.”

The small venue (about 25 people) allowed audience members to ask questions about their favorite scenes.  One viewer wanted to know how Don was able to get such great footage of the hawk soaring.  Don replied the hawk only soared as it was landing.  Therefore, they put it in a bird cage and attached the cage to helium balloons.  When the cage was high enough, they triggered the door to open and filmed the bird as it soared down to its trainer.

Sometimes comments did lean toward the adult viewing pleasure.  Picture the scene:  camera angle from the end of a rope cropped tightly around Marc Singer’s hands as he pulls the rope through a ring, then Elicia Sanchez utters, “Great shot, very sexual.”  In another scene, Roberts kisses Singer and asks if he will now come with them.  Emmett Montgomery replies, “I’m gonna *** all over you” while Singer just smiles on screen. 

The comments continued intermingled with Don’s ‘cool facts.’  Did you know that the Death Guard’s mask didn’t have any eye sockets?  “That’s right,” Don chuckled, “the actor kept running into walls.”  Now go back and watch this movie at home.  Try not to crack up when you see the Death Guard running aimlessly though hallways swinging his arms so he wouldn’t run into a wall, I dare ya.  

There were also other hazards in the Jun Horde temple.  The torches used put out black smoke.  The entire crew wore breathing masks while the actors completed the scenes.  The make-up people continually used Q-tips to clean out the actors’ nostrils.  Don said he chuckles when he sees the one shot where Roberts has black around her nose.

Don also shared limitations on budget. The scene when Singer meets his father has them surrounded by local dirt farmers.  It was shot at night in a Simi Valley.  Dan hired local homeless people since the budget only allowed for $25 a day per person.  “It was freezing outside.  We gave them robes and huddled them by fires.  They looked like dirt farmers.”

One day Singer came to the set making a honking sound.  Don said he asked him he was making that noise.  Singer replied, “I have to talk to the hawk.”  Singer continued practicing his ‘hawk’ sound all day.  The next time singer saw the cat, he started going, “Grrrrr.”

As the movie was ending (spoiler alert), one of the ferrets falls into a fiery pit.  The entire saddened audience went, “Awwwwe.”  To which Don replied, “Someone had to die.” Then poof!  The sadness was gone.  Don continued, “In the original script Robert’s character died, but the producers over ruled me.”

This is my new favorite way to watch eighties movies.  Instead of a scripted director’s commentary on DVDs, I think they should include a taping of the director and two comedians watching the movie.  It’s much more interesting. 

I want to thank Don Coscarelli for sharing his memories and poking fun at his cult classic.  Wonderful idea Crypticon Seattle, this should be an annual event.  Maybe Don with Phantasm next year.

Crypticon's first ever official film festival is ready to start announcing films. It's shaping up to be a great horror fest.  Here are the first three:

It's in the Blood starring Lance Henriksen

It’s In the Blood is an all-together new cinematic movement. At its core a father son story, the film is a deconstruction of the prototypical ‘creature feature’, incorporating elements of mystical realism, and psychological thriller. We call it a Psyche-Saga. One year after a tragic incident tore their family apart, a grieving son (October) and his estranged father (Russell) embark on a journey into the wild to reconcile their past. Crypticon is all about Horror, and they have a fun-filled, creepy-packed weekend just for all you horror fans. The creep factor will be elevated when zombies, zombie hunters, monsters, and psychopathic killers roam the halls of the Hilton Seattle Airport and Conference Center May 25th-27th. And those are just the spectators.

Crypticon offers something for everyone. Some of the weekend events include a film
festival, guest panels, make-up contest, writing contest, zombie tag (will you
be a survivor?), costume ball, and Biohazard parties.

Guests include:

Eloise J Knapp (writer, photographer, designer): Author of The Undead Situation, an apocalyptic story based in Seattle, where Knapp also resides. She is editor-in-chief of Z Magazine, writing a sequel to her first novel, and working toward a degree in graphic design.







Doug Bradley (actor): Best known for his portrayal of Pinhead in the Hellraiser series, his other credits include; Nightbreed (1990), Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes (2006), The Cottage (2008).








Richard Keil (actor): Probably best known for his role as the steeled-toothed villain, Jaws, in the James Bond Movies, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. He’s probably less known (but a few of my favorites) for roles as Malak in the 1976 TV series Land Of The Lost, Silver Streak, and Pale Rider. Keil departs from his stereotypical villian roles to play a big softy, Mr. Larson, in Happy Gilmore. More recently, he voiced the character Vlad in Tangled.








Dee Wallace (actor): My first Dee Wallace movie was The Howling. She is also well known for the frantic mom in E.T.: The Extraterrestrial. Other roles include Cujo, Critters, The Frighteners, Halloween (2007), and House of The Devil.








Tom Woodruff (special effects, actor): Terminator, Aliens, Alien 3, Tremors 1, 2, 3, & 4, Leviathan, Jumanji, Michael, Starship Troopers, The Santa Clause 2 & 3, Alien vs Predator films, Cirquedu Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, Skyline, and Zookeeper. His acting credits also include Pumpkinhead and creatures from Alien 3, Leviathan, Alien Resurrection, and Race to Witch Mountain.
