The Gifted S02E05 "afterMath" Recap
Twelve years ago, Jace was just starting off as a cop. His partner unlawfully harassed a mutant and Jace disapproved of this. But when the cop explains to Jace about prior incidents with mutants, Jace decides to go along with it.
Lauren is brought back with the other mutants following the hospital conflict. Caitlin wants to stay with Lauren and tend to her but Reed assures her he can look after her and encourages Caitlin to go help the other injured mutants being brought in. She asks John for answers about what went wrong with the plan and he promises that they all did theist they could and that they will continue to work and find a way to save their loved ones.
Andy still feels guilty about injuring Lauren but Lorna assures him that he did what he needed to and that he pushed only as hard as he needed. The mission was a success. The new patient they took is named Rebecca/Twist and she is highly traumatised from her time in the hospital. She is unresponsive to their attempts to interact with her. Andy says it makes sense after how she was treated, and even the Frost sisters shudder at seeing her thoughts. The Inner Circle plans to use Rebecca in the larger plans they have. The group first needs to test her powers but she refuses to do so. Andy is disapproving of how they speak to her, and tells the Frost sisters and Lorna that they're not going to win her over by speaking to her like she's a weapon instead of a person. He gets permission to talk to her, as they have nothing to lose by him doing so.
Marcos and Clarice head into the sewers to meet with Erg in the hopes that he'll take in the new mutants so they can hide with the Morlocks. Erg agrees to take them but only under the condition that they will each bran an "M" mark into their cheeks. Marcos is disgusted by this sentiment.
Caitlin and the other medical staff struggle to treat a patient whose blood and skin are acidic. They need to decompress his lung and John insists on doing it since the other doctors can't press into his skin without permanent injury. John injures his hand but he saves the patient's life. Afterward, Caitlin treats his hand so it can heal properly, aided by his super strength. John admits to her that he feels guilty for failing mutants he was supposed to lead and save. Caitlin assures him that he's done his best and they're interrupted by the man, Michael, who wakes after his treatments. He and John bond over their shared time in the military. Michael tells them about the patient the Inner Circle took, Rebecca. He's also able to tell that a psychiatrist named Doctor Taylor worked with them and was kinder than the others before passing out from his injuries.
Andy visits Rebecca in her room and speaks to her kindly, explains to her why he likes being in the Inner Circle. He begins to bounce a ball against the wall and she turns it inside out, revealing her power to him. He introduces himself and she does the same.
Jace attends his first meeting with the Purifiers who declare their intention to take to the streets and enact violence. Jace says that fighting pro-mutant protesters will only make themselves look bad. He proposes that they use their man-power to track down the mutant fugitives that had escaped from the mental hospital to legitimise themselves as an organisation and present themselves as part of the solution.
Rebecca goes with Andy walk around the facility and when she observes the window, she says that she's trading one entrapped location for another. He offers to take her outside and she eagerly agrees. Lorna encounters them on the way out and pulls Andy aside to say it's a bad idea to expose her to too much so soon after coming out of the hospital. Andy reminds her that Rebecca needs to feel free if she's going to be part of their cause. Lorna relents and Andy takes Rebecca outside.
The Purifiers attack the clinic that Caitlin is working in, following Jace's suggestion of trying to find where the fugitives may have sought medical treatment. The men, including Jace, barge into the clinic while Caitlin and John have brought many mutants to hide in the basement. Caitlin is shocked to see Jace on the surveillance feed.
Andy and Rebecca are enjoying a lunch out together and Rebecca agrees to join the Inner Circle. She then sneaks with him while she turns a police car inside out. She pushes him to do the same and he uses his powers to further destroy the car. When they return to the Inner Circle, Rebecca kisses Andy in the elevator on the way up. Upon meeting Lorna and the Frost sisters, Rebecca asks them to tell her about the mission she's to be a part of.
Jace notices the gurney that held the acidic man and interrogates the doctor. A Purifier viciously beats the doctor until Jace stops him. The Purifiers are forced to flee when they hear the sounds of sirens coming. John is angry when he learns that Michael and Caitlin conspired to let Michael die when John was insisting on exposing himself to go upstairs to find more supplies to treat Michael.
Erg gives Clarice her name, "Blink," and encourages her to not hide who she is.
Finally, Jace is shown to have taken some documents from the clinic and calling up the Purifiers with the intention of hitting 'them' where they live.
The Gifted airs on Tuesdays on FOX at 8/7c.

Zachary Levi Addresses DCEU-Hate at New York Comic Con
When the final panel on the Main Stage of the last day of New York Comic Con, a one-on-one with Danai Gurira, was cancelled the organisers of the convention made the excellent choice to get actor Zachary Levi to step in last-minute. A seasoned veteran of conventions and hosting his own panels, Levi has been known to fans for years for not only his starring role on NBC's beloved spy-comedy "Chuck" but for being the founder of Nerd HQ. The organisation would hold panels with some of the most popular names from nerd franchises and raise money for Operation Smile. The panels were especially beloved by fans for how intimate and honest they were, with the entire duration spent answering fan questions as opposed to being moderated by some stuffy host.
Now that Levi is set to helm "Shazam" film in the DCEU, his popularity is soaring higher than ever. He paid a visit to New York Comic Con during which he did signings, photo-ops, made surprise appearances to the DC booth, and closed out the convention by doing a panel with no moderator whatsoever (he made it clear he didn't need one) and spent the hour offering in-depth answers to the questions fans had not only about his big jobs in "Chuck" and "Shazam" but more personal questions about theatre, getting started in the industry, and mental health. Levi is an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness and promised that he will be using his platform while on the media tour for "Shazam" to further promote this issue.
Though all of Levi's answers during this panel were beautifully thoughtful and worth listening to, one question in particular stood out. When asked about the negativity that surrounds the discourse around DCEU films, Levi jokingly begins his response by saying, "How much time do you have?" But once Levi digs into the deeper philosophical issues surrounding toxicity in 'fan' communities and the media coverage of entertainment media he offers a deeply insightful response.
"I'm gonna get a little philosophical with this because I think it's necessary. I think we're all here and I said this actually at the Syfy panel that I did on Thursday, we come to these conventions because we care. We're dressed up in cosplay because we love these worlds, we love these characters. That is awesome and we should never change that. We should be encouraging that, we should be encouraging people's creative expression and their passion for these worlds.
What's unfortunate is that I think built into a lot of that and where we're at in the world right now is that there's a lot of insecurities that are fueling a lot of fears that fuel a lot of hate. With that hate, and with the fears of what's gonna happen with these characters, what's gonna happen with these shows, 'Is it gonna be exactly the way I want this to be?' That starts manifesting in a tremendous amount of negativity. That negativity is only going to divide us further, it's only going to keep us from good things. We have to keep that in check.
We have to understand that none of these characters belong to any one of us. None of these shows belong to any one of us. Sometimes these shows, Captain Marvel, Shazam, has been around for a really long time. There's a lot of fans, the iterations of the character have run the gambit. So how do I make, how do me, and David and Peter Safran, and everyone at New Line, how do we make a version that's gonna please everyone? It's impossible to do that. At the very least, I think what we can hope is that people would be somewhat open-minded, that people would be patient, and I think maybe even most importantly and this is something that after going through a lot of therapy and working on self-love and therefore being able to hopefully love other people even more, I think it's very important that we remember this: everyone is doing the best that they can.
That might sound like a bunch of bullshit but I'm not lying, guys. Every single person that you meet is literally living life to the best of their ability with the tools they've been given. Some of us have been given a really shit set of tools and that just is what it is. Now imagine that on just a base fundamental life lesson, right? Now that can go into entertainment.
Now a lot of people have very divisive ideas of, 'Oh that fucking movie, that guy, that should've been this and that should've been that.' By the way, I'm guilty too. There have been so many movies that I've gone to or shows that I've watched and I've been like, 'Oh my god, how much time did they even spend thinking about this?' or 'How much time did they work on that?' or whatever. By the way, look, sometimes people do take shortcuts and they're cheap and they're easy about it and I don't think that's okay. I think it is appropriate for us to hold people accountable to work ethic and hold people accountable to at least putting the effort in. But some times, a lot of times people are working their asses off to make the very best thing that they think that they're making for all of us. It just happens to not be your cup of tea and that's just tough. Just because it's not your exact flavour that you love doesn't mean it's not millions of other people's favourite flavour. If we can wrap our heads around that just a little bit and have some grace and some patience with each other, we are in dire need of that. We are all at each other's throats here.
When you have very passionate people, and us nerds, we're the most passionate people in the world. We love these worlds. We live and die by these worlds. We spend copious amounts of dollars to adorn our walls with comics and posters and signatures and pictures and own the entire collector's editions and all of that stuff. I think that's fucking great. But we have got to at least give people the opportunity to try and create something from their own heart and if you don't like it, by the way, this goes back to 'if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all'. You don't have to show up on social media and bash something.
This is one of the beautiful things about capitalism even though it's got some really screwed up things going on in it right now. One of the beautiful things about capitalism is that money talks. If you don't like something, don't buy it. They won't make it anymore. I'm not kidding. If you don't like a TV show, don't fucking watch it. It'll get yanked off the screen that fast. But you don't need to go online, by the way, particularly when it comes to an actor, we don't even write this stuff. We're just showing up doing the best we can. We end up being the face of the franchise and so then we get the hate. That's why people end up bouncing.
I try to filter that as much as I can. I tell myself when I'm getting a lot of hate, it's coming from fear. They're not a bad person, they're just afraid. There was a whole thing on social media when the suit came out and people were bashing me in the suit, I know that that's because they're just afraid. They're afraid that this thing that they love so much is not gonna be what they want it to be. I'm not gonna hate them back but I'm also not gonna stand here and be hated on. I'm gonna stand my ground and say hey, have a little respect for the fact that I'm a human being and don't talk to me as if I'm not. Let's all treat each other like we're human beings."

New York Comic Con: "Nightflyers" Cast & Crew Preview New Series (Pilot Review)
"Nightflyers" is an intriguing new Syfy series based on the novella and series of short stories by George R. R. Martin. The show screened it's pilot episode at New York Comic Con and afterwards help a panel and Q&A with cast and crew from the show. The episode opens with Dr. Agatha Matheson (Gretchen Mol) in a horror sequence reminiscent of "The Shining" where she is stalked by a deranged male killer. It's unclear whether or not she survives the encounter as she's trapped on a spaceship so escape options are highly limited. But there's little time to ponder the matter when the episode flashes back to the events that will lead up to this terrifying face-off.
Executive producer Jeff Buhler is very fond of the horror genre and shares about his approach to incorporating the genre into a sci-fi series. "This show is a love-letter to horror fans. Obviously 'The Shining' is in there front and centre. 'Alien' is in there. 'The Exorcist' is in there. There's more evidence of 'The Shining' later on. We took all the great horror movies that we love, even when she's screaming 'Get out!' That's 'Amityville Horror'. There's little things that resonate from the horror universe but we tried to weave it into the Nightflyer ship which is sort of this crazy-making place anyways. There's all these broken memories and all this weird hologram stuff so we found that you could create different stylistic impressions, different approaches to horror in different parts of the show. It takes a sort of weaving, winding path through all of our favourite horror references. If you're a horror fan you won't be let down by the end of the season."
Despite the morbid opening, Buhler had described the opening scene in his first pitch as well as plans for a potential season two and three if the show is successful. The original story written by author Martin had all of the characters meeting their demise so it will come as little surprise that a live-action adaptation would deviate from this plot so as to be able to have an ongoing story to captivate the audience.
Eoin Macken portrays Karl D'Branin, one of the crew members on the ship. Karl is a character dealing with his own baggage, having lost his wife and daughter to a catastrophic event that pre-dates his space journey.
"Karl starts off and he's pretty stable, kind of seems like he has it together," begins Macken. "He's trying to organise this whole mission. Then as you see, he's not really stable at all. It gets worse from there on in. I didn't even know until we started shooting the first episode where these characters were gonna go. Jeff pushed him to some very dark places."
"I was gonna say, no one stays that stable on this show," says executive producer Jeff Buhler.
Karl is shown throughout the pilot to be having visions of his daughter. As part of the mystery and world-building, it's unclear whether this is an artistic manifestation of his grief, the result of mental illness, or a hallucination caused by some mysterious alien threat. The possibilities are endless and make the show all the more intriguing when there are so many mysteries manifesting in the pilot episode.
Macken shares about how organic and practical the approach was to creating these encounters he has on the ship with his daughter. "She's there all the time. It's fascinating watching the show and seeing the effects and sounds which are all incredible. When we did it, everything is very practical. Even the stuff in the forest where the kind of flashback happens with the memory suite, they built an entire sphere, it's a perfect circle. When you're sitting in the middle, your voice sounds totally different. It's a real thing so when you put everything in the forest, everything was very real. It feels very textured because we didn't do a huge amount of green screen. I think that's really important especially with this because everything is very heightened. You've got a hologram, making best friends with a telepath, it's gotta be something that you connect to."
Actor David Ajala portrays Roy Eris, a character that only appears as a hologram for the time being. "Just in terms of on a very practical level, being a hologram, it wasn't difficult with the acting part. The only thing that was difficult for me was just as an actor having certain impulses to connect physically. That was taken away and that was a bit disconcerting. But once I got past that it was easy to just kind of embrace being elusive. It's super cool how I can beep in and beep out; I wish I could do that in real life! Throughout the season we will see the layers unravel, Roy Eris' secrets which hardly anyone knows about, even the crew, they will start to be unearthed and discovered. He is a little bit shy. He hasn't really had much interaction with humans so everything is new from him. He sees a little chocolate queen, Elantha, and says 'Oh I'll have a bit of that!' That's gonna be fun. I think she becomes the catalyst which starts the unearthing of Roy Eris."
The premiere episode of "Nightflyers" is an exciting addition to Syfy's increasingly quality roster of original series. The more practical approach to world-building in regards to sets and filmmaking sequences adds a more tangible feeling both from a visual perspective but in how it seems to effect the performances of the lead actors for the better. The horror influences are not so heavy-handed as to put off audiences that don't have a taste for the genre, as many of these references are such that enhance the psychological probing into the lead characters. Another important strength of the show is that there are diverse characters in regards to ethnic background and sexual orientation, so an even wider audience can tune in and feel represented by an engaging work of fiction. We'll eagerly be tuning in for this season to see how all these mysteries that have been introduced continue to unfold and escalate!
"Nightflyers" will premiere on Syfy on December 2.

Legends of Tomorrow S04E02 "Witch Hunt" Review
The Legends use the magical bones Constantine introduced last week as a new detector of magical beings. Since they have wrapped up the time anomalies that they were responsible for tracking and repairing over the course of three years it's only natural that they evolve their work and approach to new threats. Constantine is proving to be a rough-around-the-edges addition to the team. With the clashing between Constantine and Mick to be particularly comedic, there is great promise to what new material the writers of "Legends of Tomorrow" may have to work with in future episodes. But first... let's jump into this week's witchy shenanigans.
No fun in Puritan times
The Legends travel to Salem, 1692, right in the middle of the Salem Witch Trials. A young girl named Prudence is struggling because her mother Jane has been wrongly accused of being a witch. Yet again the series seizes the opportunity to offer a touching, timely story that resonates with today's social climate of fearing the Other. Zari grapples the hardest with the ethical dilemma of whether to maintain society's historical accuracy in which Jane died as a 'witch' or to save a woman from unjust accusations by religiously tyrannical men. As stories of witches are often at their strongest when offering commentary on the autonomy of women, it makes perfect sense to have Zari be at the forefront of teaching young Jane about forgiveness and to be the better person.
Is that music?
It seems more and more evident that the parties in charge of "Legends of Tomorrow" have embraced the more eccentric creative choices in shaping the show's adventures and humour. This week, the surprise flair comes with a wand and a blue dress. Young Prudence has a fairy godmother and in a hilariously meta introduction, she serenades the Legends while Ray voices his joyful surprise that music can be heard accompanying her. But this fairy godmother is more ominous than the designed-for-children fairytales have previously conveyed. She wants to use Prudence to enact revenge on humankind, turns Ray and Mick into pigs, and after being defeated, she offers an ominous warning to John Constantine that something wicked is coming for him. It's an excellent foreshadowing moment that grounds the story after all the hilarious antics of the fairy godmother story and brings the viewers back to the larger threat building over the course of this season.
I don't need your money.
Nate has an awkward dinner with his father, who still doesn't know what Nate has really been doing over the last few years. But Nate becomes further entangled with his father because the Time Bureau needs to pitch to him in order to secure funding to keep their operation up and running. It offers Nate the opportunity to be better explored to the audience, particularly since he's technically one of the newest characters compared to the other Legends who had more extensive introductions on past series before "Legends of Tomorrow" was commissioned. There's a good mix of family drama and comedy, particularly once magic is introduced to Nate's father. Following a strong season premiere, Legends is holding steady in quality and we can't wait to see what's in store for next week!
"Legends of Tomorrow" airs on Mondays on the CW at 9/8c.
