In Review: The Siren's Realm (The Tethering Series Book 2) by Megan O'Russell

Released: April 29, 2015
Format: Ebook
Publisher: Silence in the Library, LLC
ASIN: B00V8RYJKQ

I received an early copy for review for the Xpresso Book Tour. The book is available now in e-formats. It's the second installment in the series and not a standalone book. If you haven't already read the first book, The Tethering, you'll be lost as events of the first book are merely skimmed over.

So let's review. Jacob Evans was a normal kid who fell for an extraordinary girl, Emilia Gray, but it turns out that Jacob was pretty extraordinary himself, and after the death of his father he took his rightful place among magic kind. But the girl wasn't his, and his training couldn't fully prepare him for her kidnapping. He risked everything to save Emilia, and he did save her, but ended up tethered to her for life. He bound his life to hers forever to save her, even though she wasn't in love with him.

Now, for Jacob, though, he wouldn't have it any other way. All he ever wanted was to be with Emilia. He's always had a connection to her, the tethering merely brought them closer together, making it the least of their worries.

Magickind is at war, and the opposing faction, the Dragons, are gaining power with the Gray Clan standing alone. And maybe worse of all, Emilia's long lost father is the dreaded leader of the Dragons, their Pendragon.

Desperate to find a way to stop the Pendragon, Emilia is forced to seek answers from someone who hasn’t been seen in seventeen years… Her mother. Embarking on a magical journey filled with witches, wizards, centaurs and a dangerous and powerful Siren, Jacob and Emilia must take a leap of faith to a land neither could have ever imagined… and hope they can then find their way home.

This is another solid outing for Megan O'Russell. The pacing is much quicker than the previous one, which is a good thing. The better thing is the evolution of the relationship between Emilia and Jacob. The only thing missing is the brooding and bickering that's normally found in a YA novel, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

As Emilia and Jacob learn the depth of her father's depravity, they realize the only way to ensure the safety of the family they know is to leave them. With the world building done in The Tethering O'Russell is really able to focus on the story, building more twists with plenty of character development.

From the beginning, Jacob's life has been that of ridicule, shunning and abandonment. Yet somehow, Jacob has grown into a strong and caring young man.  He continues it show his dependability, especially for Emilia. Not only has his character grown, but so has his abilities, which will be interesting to see where it goes as the series continues.

But this story is really about Emilia this time around. After the events of the Tethering, she's left  battered and broken by the betrayals of her boyfriend, Dexter, and the father she never knew. Emilia had always been the strong confident one, but this time around she's weakened by fear, one that she has to overcome, to find her way again. With Jacob by her side, you know she'll find her way back to herself. Their relationship really is brilliant, and it's evolution is really a highlight.

The biggest complaint is how unfriendly the novel is to new readers and the heavy use of magical terms. While there is little explaining of backstory, there is a lot pausing in storytelling to explain spells. the use of magic bogs down the story at times, rather than propelling it forward, but once book reaches midpoint, it really picks up and doesn't stop until the finale.

The Siren's Realm is a great follow-up to The Tethering. The characters and world are expanded, and O'Russell has really hit her stride with this one. The Siren's Realm is available now.

Megan O’Russell is thrilled to have published her premier novel The Tethering with Silence in the Library Publishing. In Review: COME, THE DARK: (Forever Girl Series Book Two) by Rebecca Hamilton

Released: January 6th 2015
Format: Ebook
Publisher: TeZLA Publishing; TeZLA edition
ASIN: B00P54AKPG

I received an early copy for review for the Xpresso Book Tour. The book is available now in e-formats. It's the second installment in the series. It's dark, emotional and an utterly addictive read.

Rose desperately wants to escape the abuse of the father who impregnated her and the dark spirits that sit on the edges of her perception haunting her. Being thrust from Georgia 1961 into the era of Salem’s infamous witch trials isn’t what she had in mind, and now her daughter is left hopelessly out of reach.

The only way to return to her daughter is by facing certain death to banish the dark spirits that plague Salem. If she doesn’t eliminate these dark spirits in time, they will destroy civilization and trap her in this strange new place, ages away from her daughter.

Even if she can complete the task in time to return home to save her daughter, there’s still one problem: she’s falling in love with a man who can’t return with her. Achieving her goals will force her to choose between the only man who has never betrayed her and a daughter she can’t quite remember but will never forget.

Come, The Dark takes the dark theme and runs with it, with hope just sitting out of reach at the end of the tunnel. Hamilton manages to weave a textured and well paced story of hopelessness, loss and abuse while still making it a compelling read. The back drop of Salem makes for a play ground of opportunity for redemption and difficult choices.

Rose/Cordovae proves to be a strong heroine that continues to rise and fight no matter what it thrown at her. She's thrown one impossible task after another, but like any mother she is desperate to get back to her child, even though it will break her heart in the process. In many ways, Come, The Dark is very different from the first book in the series, The Forever Girl, following a different character in the same world. Just as the first book it is a standalone.

Come, The Dark is beautifully written. The story line is imaginative, and the dialogue is snappy. The action is well paced, and the descriptive passages build the world of Salem so vividly that it transports the reader there seamlessly. If you've never picked up a Rebecca Hamilton book, you're in for a treat with this one.

In Review: Ignite the Shadows by Ingrid Seymour

Released: April 23rd 2015
Format: Paperback & Ebook
Publisher: Harper Voyager
ISBN-13: 978-0008120498

I received an early copy for review for the Xpresso Book Tour. The book is available now in e-formats, but will be available in paperback come October. It's the first installment in a planned trilogy, with good world building and a likable heroine.

Sixteen-year-old Marci Guerrero is one of the best teen hackers in Seattle. However, she’d give up all her talents to know she isn’t crazy. Since the death of her father, she's lead a bleak life. She's been running from shadows most of her life, certain that something is very wrong with her, and she's right, but its nothing that she could have ever imagined. Her mother thinks that she's suffering from epilepsy, rather than unknowingly fighting an alien invasion.

Marci feels possessed by shadowy spectres that take control of her body and make her do crazy things. The blackouts and loss of control are signs that a parasite has latched onto a person’s brain and is trying to take control of its host. Most succumb to the infection within a few days, but not Marci, she's survived for more than eleven years.

While spying on the clandestine group known as IgNiTe, she is confronted by their mysterious leader, James McCray. His presence stirs the spectres inside her brain into a maddening frenzy. Her symptoms and ability to control them don’t go unnoticed by James, who soon recruits her. As IgNiTe reveals its secrets, Marci starts to realize that half the world’s population is infected with sentient parasites, which are attacking and eventually supplanting the human brain.

Now Marci wishes she was crazy, because this truth is far worse. The Eklyptors, the ancient and invading force has a smart and very scary plan for the human race. While the idea of body snatching and alien invasions are nothing new, it doesn't make the palpable fear of slowly losing control any less real. Who's infected and controlled, and who isn't becomes a very scary question, and propels a lot of the story along.

The entire tone of the story is dark and very angsty, with a dystopian backdrop that'll delight the targeted young adult audience. The journey is very bleak, with a happy ending not likely. While there is plenty to love about the novel, there are a lot of glaring plot holes, with strings of story lines tossed to the side as new elements added. Being the first in a planned trilogy though, allows the opportunity for these issues to be corrected and for the story to feel more complete.

The action is well written, but IgNiTe has a bad habit of keeping too many secrets that could really enhance not only the reader's experience, but Marci's as well. She's consistently berated for doing the wrong thing, when she isn't given all of the details. It happens too often. A better approach would have been for the strong willed protagonist to have chosen to go against protocol because of her own internal compass rather than being helpless and having no control of any situation.

Ignite the Shadows is off to a great and very intriguing start. It's the perfect mix of active storytelling and teenaged romance, without the romance being the full focus of the story. It's a great first book in the series. I'll be looking forward to book two, which will be released in 2016.

Such A Secret Place by Cortney Pearson Giveaway and Q&A

Such A Secret Place by Cortney Pearson is out now, and we're taking part in the book blitz with Xpresso Book Tours. You can enter to win a $20 Amazon Gift Card!

But there's more. We've also got a short Q&A with the author. If you here just for the giveaways, scroll to the bottom of this post.

Tell us a little bit about The Stolen Tears series, and especially Such a Secret Place. Where did you get your idea?

The idea of a world where tears are magical came to me while I was jamming out to a song by Shiny Toy Guns. I don’t remember which song (I wish I did!) but the idea just bulldozed into my brain and wouldn’t let me go!

The series is about a girl who finds a vial of magical tears and has to use them to break a spell. These tears are the most powerful ever shed, and so naturally many others are after them as well and Ambry has to protect them while trying to decipher who to trust.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Yes! I remember drawing pictures and scribbling underneath them before I even knew *how* to write, then going around to my family members and telling them my stories.

What inspires you?

Music, definitely. I ALWAYS write with music on, and I usually fit it to the mood of the scene I’m trying to write. Reading stories or watching movies like mine helps too. I was stumped the other day, but while watching Divergent with some friends inspiration struck and I suddenly knew how to fix a spot I’d been struggling to write.

Do you listen to music when you write?

I do! It helps me block everything else out, strangely enough.

On that note, what’s your favorite Pandora station/type of music?

Lately my writing stations are Film Scores radio, Birdy radio (for romantic, swoony scenes), and I’m really liking Ed Sheeran’s stuff and a band called Superhumanoids.

Any other hobbies besides writing?

I read a lot, mostly. Pretty standard, lol. I also love to play the clarinet.

Scenario: It’s the end of the world. Aliens are invading and you have two minutes to hurry and grab your three favorite things before rushing off to safety. What do you grab?

Assuming my family is already coming with me, my top three items would be--
  1. The flash drive with all my writing on it
  2. My clarinet
  3. My copy of Jane Eyre

Because of a spell, people can no longer feel emotion; not enough to cry, and definitely not enough to defend themselves against the tyrannical soldiers stealing her people’s magic. A rare vial of enchanted tears chooses Ambry to reverse the spell, and soon she finds herself the target not only of the Arcaians, but of battle-scarred Talon Haraway, who wants the tears for his own reasons.
All Ambry wants is to rescue her brother, but when her tears get stolen, Ambry determines to work with Talon to get them back. Any day the Arcaians could drink her tears. EXCERPT
I was surprised to see Shane come out of nowhere. He pushed his way through the small group that had formed in the hallway and made it to my side, standing a shoulder width in front of me, as though to defend me. “There you are.” He put his arm around my waist, pulled me close, and kissed me.
Shane’s lips were soft, his mouth open slightly, and I nearly reared back when I felt tongue, but he held me firmly to him. His hands locked on my hips.
And then I thought to myself, why the hell not?

The next thing I knew my arms were sliding around his neck and I was leaning into him, kissing him back for all I was worth and enjoying every second of my first real kiss.

Yours Truly, Taddy by Avery Aster (The Undergrad Years, Book 2)
Jetting to Martinique for a modeling assignment with three of Europe’s hottest magazine photographers—Gustave, Fabian, and Leon—should’ve been easy, breezy beautiful. Never did I expect to look up and see a hole in the ceiling of our plane that was bigger in size than my Birkin bag.
Shit! We’re nose-diving toward Eden Island. I pictured how my New York Times obituary might read when I’m gone, “Taddy Brill, Manhattanite, dethroned descendant of the Austrian House of Brillford royalty, dies at age eighteen, penniless, unloved, and a virgin.” I swear this crap only happens to me. Suddenly, Leon pulls me with Fabian and Gustave. Adrenaline racing through me, our bodies clung as one. We prepared to…crash. The Undergrad Years is a New Adult contemporary miniseries about first loves, independence, and everlasting friendships.

Wild Ride by Opal Carew (Ready to Ride)
Her friend told her dreams come true at Eden, but this is more like a nightmare.
Marissa is shaken when her bad-assed biker ex-boyfriend begins to stalk her.  After receiving an invitation to an exclusive resort called Eden, she jumps at the chance to get away. But even in paradise, she can’t escape the man from her past. As he’s closing in on her, a passing stranger on a motorcycle pulls up and orders her onto his bike. Frightened and willing to take any chance to flee her dangerous ex, she does as he says. Her knight in supple leather manages to lose her ex and take her to a secret hideaway, but now she finds herself overwhelmed by his potent masculinity and submitting completely to his authoritative commands. Killer didn’t want to be her saviour.  He had problems of his own.  But once Marissa’s under his protection, he will do whatever he can to keep her safe.  Even force her to face her deepest fears.

Rough Draft by Mari Carr (Big Easy, Book 4)
Capture, bondage and fantasies fulfilled. It’s all fun and games until someone gets killed.
Bestselling crime novelist Jett Lewis is stumbling over a wicked case of writer’s block, his fast-flowing words having run dry. His publisher’s screaming “deadline”, the fans are ready to riot, and Jett just wants to disappear. His friend Carissa suggests he get away, clear his head…get laid. And she has just the ticket. Literally. Two passes to Eden, an exclusive island paradise. Recently sans girlfriend, Jett convinces Carissa to go with him, and the resort is more than either of them bargained for—especially when the simple beach trip turns to murder. Thrust into a plot sinister enough to rival Jett’s books, the couple embarks on a search for the killer. The most shocking revelation of all might be their mutual attraction…and how much Jett and Carissa love working undercover.

Breaking Free by Cathryn Fox
Spring Break at college is  supposed to be a time of fun and parties, but Alaska Rossi, AKA Jane Smith, is on lockdown thanks to her father’s mafia dealings. She wants only to  party down with the  rest of her classmates.  At least her hot, darkly mysterious bodyguard—deep undercover as her dorm’s resident  assistant—gives her something to fantasize about during her boring nights in  confinement. When she wins a campus radio contest, and is gifted with  a special invitation to an exclusive island, she knows it’s her  chance to break free. After all, it’s a place where no one knows her name, so  what danger could  possible come to her? But when danger appears in the form of a masked man who takes control  of all her pleasures, tapping into her darkest fantasies, she begins to wonder  if her undercover lover, and the mysterious bodyguard who’s deep undercover, are one in the  same…

Hold Me Close by Eliza Gayle (Purgatory Club, Book 6)
Sometimes you need to cut and run and sometimes the ties run too deep to abandon. Bonnie’s job at Purgatory keeps her on edge in more ways than one. Every day the pain of her grief over losing her Dom threatens to consume her. Her only escape comes at the hands of the resident tattooed  bad boy who likes to keep things light and loose with a variety of women. Return to Sender by Steena Holmes (Return to Sender trilogy, Book 1)
Lauren Summers is the stable sister, the one who runs the family company while her sisters take off and travel the world. One weekend a year she hides herself away and mourns a love she lost six years ago. That weekend is now, except she’s being whisked away to a mysterious island despite her protests. After being pampered with luxury, massages and the best chocolate a girl could taste, she starts to realize that its time she left the past behind and moved forward with life, and maybe with love. What she doesn’t know, is that someone from her past has other ideas…

Escape From Reality by Adriana Hunter
When curvy single and struggling romance author Leila Connors  receives a  mysterious invitation to spend an all-expense paid week on a tropical island, it simply seems too good to be true.  Who is responsible  for sending the invitation?  Why does the envelope smell of dominant  male  possession?  And most importantly, why her?  With a string of   failed relationships and a career on the down-slide, Leila feels she has nothing to lose and agrees to the trip. But when she arrives at her destination, far away  from everything she knows, she can’t help but wonder if she made a  mistake. That is until she comes face to face with the incredibly  handsome Sebastian Phillips, a tortured stranger with dark secrets, and a man  who will take without asking. With just one touch he awakens a  desperate need within her. Before too long Leila finds herself caught up in a game of  irresistible obsession, where truths are exposed, and the dangerously  blurred line  between fantasy and reality threaten to drive her to the  point of no return.

Blurring the Lines by Roni Loren
A year has passed since Gretchen lost her fiancé, but she still can’t sleep. Or paint. And her new home in New Orleans is either haunted or she’s finally going crazy.
Her bet is on the latter.
So when her best friend, Burke, offers to sweep her away to a private luxury island for a break, she can’t say no. Maybe if she can be someone else for a few days, the ghosts of the past will quiet. At least for a little while.
Burke knows what she’s going through. She lost her fiancé, but he lost family. He gets her in a way no else can. But lately she’s noticing things she shouldn’t about her former fiancé’s younger brother—his sexy smirk, that spicy Cajun accent, and the way he looks at her when he thinks she’s not paying attention. A week alone with him? Dangerous. If she blurs the lines between them, she could ruin the only friendship that means anything to her. She could ruin it all.
But the island of Eden has its own agenda. The island knows what you need. That’s what the invitation says. She just never imagines it will grant her the one wish that could destroy them both.

Fight For Me by Sharon Page (Yardley College Chronicles, Book 3)

That’s when I met Ryder’s best friend, Xavier Malone, a former fighter who built a billion dollar empire. Xavier is gorgeous, sweet, and wonderful with my son. I’m falling for him—but I’m scared to commit. Then I receive an invitation to the island of Eden, a luxurious resort where I can live my every sensual fantasy. I’m certain Xavier sent it. But after I leave my son with my mom and fly to Eden, I discover I’m in the middle of a grudge match between Xavier and Ryder. They are going to fight for me: inside the ring in a televised match, and outside it—where they both plan to seduce the pants off me. But I have a surprise for them too.

How To Tempt A Tycoon by Daire St. Denis (Savage Interactives, Book 5)
Tessa Savage has traveled all over the world but she has never been to Eden. So when she receives a personalized invitation to this enigmatic island location, there’s no way she can refuse. She’s been told that Eden will fulfill her every fantasy but instead Tessa is faced with the choice of overcoming one of her two greatest fears; total vulnerability or total submission. To Tessa there is very little difference between these two things…except that the choice means she must make a decision between two very special men from her past. Help Tessa decide what to do in this smokin’ hot and emotionally charged interactive tale.

Ivy in Bloom by Vivi Anna writing as Tawny Stokes (Hothouse series, Book 3)
After getting out of a bad relationship and dropping out of university, Ivy Watts decides she needs some much needed stress therapy so she tags along with her parents to a luxury island resort called Eden.  She expects to laze around on the beach with a drink in her hand and figure out what she wants to do with the rest of her life, but what she doesn’t expect is to learn a few life lessons from the tall, dark handsome man in the penthouse suite.

Second Glances by Elena Aitken (The Springs)
When Kylie Wilson receives a mysterious invitation for an all expenses paid trip to a tropical, all inclusive resort, there’s no doubt in her mind who it came from—Marcus Stone, the only man she’s ever really loved. The same man who’d promised her forever and then promptly left town to pursue his dream without so much as a backward glance. Kylie owes it to herself to take a chance, and despite her conflicted feelings, she decides to risk her heart again and is soon jetting toward the island of Eden and the man she hopes will finally fill the void in her life. But when she arrives, all is not as she expected it to be. More to the point, he is not who she expected him to be. And on an island that is supposed to ‘know exactly what you need’, can Kylie open her body, mind, and more importantly—her heart to someone and something, she’s never considered?

Delicious and Deadly by C.C. MacKenzie (Ludlow Hall, Book 8)
Emma Ludlow’s temperature is rising and it’s not because of the sweltering Florida sun. Her lucrative business is bloodshed and slaughter. All she wants is peace and quiet in Eden to plot her latest murder. However, a much-adored celebrity chef is in Eden, too. The man is insufferable with an overblown ego she’s dying to kill. His slow smile may be ‘Delicious’, but she won’t taste it, not again. Being famous and wealthy isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be. Oscar Zamani learned that life lesson the hard way when he let the seductively mysterious Emma slip through his fingers. Now an Invitation To Eden has given him another chance to show her that this time he can be trusted. But little does Oscar know that Emma has a dark secret. A secret that might be ‘Deadly’ to his heart.

AUTHOR BIO:
Shea Berkley started out writing nonfiction (not so fun) and quickly moved into fiction (totally fun), and knew she'd found her calling. (Her family was thrilled she'd found friends to play with even if they weren't technically real.) She's still pleasantly surprised people are willing to pay to read her stories. Besides writing, her many diversions include kickboxing, reading awesome books and hanging out with her loud and rambunctious family. With five kids (all girls), her biggest job is to make sure the little darlings don't harass the neighbors and then play dumb when the cops come knocking on her door.

Q&A with Bonnie Vanak, author of Obsession

Are you a plotter or pantzer when it comes to writing?
I’m a “plantzer.” I do both. In addition to writing my self-published Werewolves of Montana series, I also write for Harlequin, so I have to turn in a synopsis. A synopsis is a terrific writing tool. With my Werewolves of Montana books, I’ll write a basic synopsis when I’m starting a new story. It helps me to gain a good idea of the characters’ motivations and emotional conflict.

Do you prefer an alpha, beta or gamma hero?
Alpha, definitely. Love writing and reading about alpha males. In my new Werewolves of Montana Mating Mini, Obsession, the hero is an alpha werewolf who lost his pack.

Which would you rather read, historical or contemporary romance?
Historical romance. My first books were Egyptian historicals. I had so much fun researching the Victorian time period of Egyptian history when archaeology was extremely popular. I included a real historical character, Flinders Petrie, in The Falcon and the Dove, my first book. There’s a fun scene in Obsession, where I include excerpts from The Falcon and the Dove, as the heroine is reading it. Jessica is a werewolf who adores reading romance novels!

What’s next in your Werewolves of Montana series?Passion, the third Mating Mini, will be released next month. And I’m working on Redemption, the fourth Mating Mini, and The Mating Challenge. The Mating Challenge is Aiden’s book. He’s the leader of the Mitchell pack in Montana, a very sexy alpha wolf who has been pursuing Nikita Blakemore, alpha female of the rival Blakemore pack. I’m planning to release Aiden’s book this summer. I already have the cover and if you “like” my Facebook page, you’ll see it posted there.

No one would miss her. They were too absorbed in the thrill of the run.

But something scuffled along the forest floor. Jessica tensed. She lacked the magick to properly clothe herself, and she was too exhausted to shift back to wolf.

A beam of silver moonlight spilled upon the forest floor, and hit the wolf standing there in the quiet glen.
Raphael. He’d turned around to find her.

Jessica shivered anew. He shifted back to Skin and stood before her, equally nude. Moonlight glinted on his dark hair, shadowing his face, silhouetting his strong, athletic body. Such a prime example of a fierce male Lupine. Desire flushed her body, chasing away the cold. Then she remembered what he was.

Pureblood.

Unlike her.

Her arousal faded. She stared into the forest, her chest hollow.

“Why are you sitting here?” He joined her, sitting on the ground, lacing his hands around his knees.
He was still naked, too. Jessica hugged herself, more from the cold than modesty. “I felt like a break. Just wanted to absorb the beauty of the night in Skin form.”

What a lie. He could easily see through it, she knew he could. But Raphael only leaned his head back against the tree. Then he waved his hand, conjuring a large flannel shirt and handed it to her.

“You look chilled,” he murmured.

Grateful, she slipped it on and thanked him. He regarded her with his steady gaze. This Lupine didn’t ask why she failed to conjure clothing, or make her feel awkward.

Jessica looked at him. “I’ve always been different from other Lupines. In my pack, my alpha doesn’t like me socializing much with the single males because he doesn’t want me choosing a mate from them. He likes keeping the bloodlines… pure.”

“Your alpha is narrow-minded. He cannot appreciate your true beauty. Simply because you can’t run as fast as the pack, or have the same magick as most Lupines doesn’t make you weak. Just different.”

A wry smile touched her mouth. “Funny. I just said the same thing to Daniel.”

“I know.”

“You overheard that?”

Smiling, he picked up a lock of her hair, and rubbed it. “You have a very kind heart. It’s one of your many unique qualities, Jessica. Compassion for others. A naughty sense of humor. And a most exquisite mouth. Small and ripe, as sweet-looking as a fresh cherry.”

No man in college ever told her that. They just wanted her to lie down and spread her legs. Jessica had wanted more. Needed more.

His gaze dropped lower, to her legs.

“You’re quite tempting. And very clever. And naughty.”

Her jaw dropped as he pulled her into his arms, and turned her over on his knee. Raphael pulled up the shirt and caressed her bottom.

“So plump and lovely. Such a sweet ass.”

A moan tore from her throat as his hand moved lower. Raphael traced the curve of her buttocks, then slid a finger down to her core. “So very sweet.”

Shock pummeled her as he brought his hand down firmly on her bare ass.

“That’s for screwing up my phone.”

As she shrieked out a protest at the stinging slap, he pressed his mouth upon the spot he’d just spanked. His mouth felt warm caressing her naked flesh where the sting of his palm still resonated. Raphael’s gentle kiss soothed away the brief pain. “And that is for being kind to Daniel.”

Jessica scrambled off his lap and sat on the ground, staring at him. “What do you want, Raphael? You’re an enigma, more than me.”

Moonlight revealed shadows in his dark eyes, tempered with a flicker of haunting loneliness. “The same thing you desire, little Red, though we both deny it. We both want a place to call home.”

Confused, she kept staring at him. “But you have a home here with J.J.’s pack.”

“I live here. But it is not home, and can never be a home. I’m a stranger here. So you see, Jessica, like you, I am also outcast and until I unite my former pack, it will always be so.”

Her heart turned over at his confession. She drew closer, slid a hand over his bearded chin. “I know what it’s like to be lonely among many.”

As she reached up to kiss him, he lowered his head. Jessica closed her eyes and sighed at the subtle pressure of his mouth. She parted her lips and he responded with a light touch, nibbling gently at her lower lip, his tongue slipping inside the moist cavern of her mouth. She slid her arms around his neck, inviting him closer.

Warmth spread through her, heating her blood, surging into her veins like fire. His scent wrapped around her like a blanket, warm male musk, spices and citrus. Jessica felt the hardness of his arousal against her belly as she pressed closer. She wanted that hardness inside her, pushing so deep that they’d become one, his seed filling her, making her pregnant with his baby…

Realization hit her. Gasping, she drew back. Raphael panted, his eyes darkening with desire.

“You’re coming into your heat,” he said, his voice deep.

He parked a lean hip against the tree’s trunk and folded his muscular arms. In his red flannel shirt, with the sleeves rolled up to display tanned forearms, and faded jeans with scuffed Western boots, he looked like an ordinary cowboy. But there was nothing ordinary about this Lupine.

Curls the color of blackest night spilled down to his collar. His strong jaw was covered by a close-trimmed beard, and a crisp mustache framed a mouth far too sensual for a man. But there was nothing sensual about the sharp, angular features of his face nor the darkness of those brown eyes.

Those eyes seemed ageless, and ancient pain lurked in their depths as he gazed down at her.
Jessica studied the acres of green pasture, the gleaming buildings, and thought about the expensive motor cars parked in the garage. “It must be nice to be wealthy,” she mused.

“There are worse things than having no money,” he said quietly.

“Easy to say when you have plenty of it.”

“I’d trade all the money in the world to regain what I’ve lost.”

He looked dark and dangerous and yet he had an air of vulnerability.

“What did you lose?”

Raphael shook his head. “Another time, little one. Perhaps one night I will share that information.”

“You don’t believe in sharing during the day?”

His gaze became hooded. “With you, I would much rather share…things… at night.”

Jessica felt her entire body flare with heat. Every time he gazed at her with those bedroom eyes, she felt a jolt of sensual awareness.

Her Lupine nature, with all its raging hormones and sexual need, howled for release.

But his seductive gaze wasn’t centered on her face now. He stared at her curls.

“What’s wrong? Never seen a redhead before?”

“Not of that color. I have met some red wolf Lupines, but their coloring is darker.” Raphael left the tree, approached her. Before she could squeak a protest, he wrapped a strand of her hair around his index finger.

“It is like living flame that does not burn. But do you burn, Jessica? Burn with the desire all our kind possesses?”
