"Origin" (2018) REVIEW

The latest YouTube series set to premiere is one that exemplifies the best of science-fiction. "Origin" is an exciting, suspenseful treat that centers around a group of strangers that wake in a ship that was supposed to lead them to a new life of paradise. Instead what they find is a horrific threat that has hit the ship, leading to an evacuation of most of the ship's passengers and crew before the show's central characters woke up.

From a filmmaking perspective, "Origin" offers a higher production value than one might expect, considering that YouTube's original content hasn't previously been able to establish the same standing and credibility of other streaming platforms. There are some decent sets built and the CGI looks well attended to, but certain shots stand out as particularly artistic in the show's first episode including a sideways pan showing a powerfully reflective body of water next to two characters having dinner in a flashback sequence.

The storytelling utilises a great deal of flashbacks to better explore the origins of the ship's passengers and some excellent mystery writing to entice the viewers to keep watching. There's some incredible horror effects that are mostly practical, though we'll admit that there were just a couple more jump-scares than necessary. The writing and acting on the show is strong enough that relying on too many jump-scares cheapens the impact of a largely well put-together sci-fi drama.

Having had the privilege of screening the first two episodes of this show, the bulk of our praise must be laid on Sen Mitsuji (Shun), and Natalie Tena (Lana). Though Tena is best known to fans for her portray of Nymphadora Tonks in the "Harry Potter" film series and Osha in "Game of Thrones" her portrayal of Lana has all the makings to become another iconic character. There's often discourse surrounding the need for more "strong female characters" in Hollywood content but the true need is for better written ones. A "strong female character" can often become a stereotypical badass with the ability to kick and punch without any deeper character content or interesting arc. Lana subverts from these pitfalls in that the show wastes no time in exploring her psychological and emotional state as a character, far beyond her ability to be physically strong and capable.

Without a doubt, the most praiseworthy component of the show is Sen Mitsuji. In episode one, he commands attention with a gripping, magnetic performance. With so much emotional intensity packed into a brooding stare, Mitsuji takes the audience on a riveting journey that debunks several of the stereotypes Hollywood has spent decades perpetuating against Asians. It's an important character introduction that sets up Shun to be the most important character in saving the group from what's lurking in the shadows of the ship.

"Origin" premieres on YouTube Red on November 14.

Tom Felton Joins Sharon Stone In Sexual Thriller 'Attachment'

Tom Felton may know a thing or two about playing a villainous-type, and his days of Harry Potter have likely trained him well in the art of sinister facial expressions, however the role he’s been recently cast him sounds especially creepy.

While Tony Kaye’s film Detachment ready to make its US debut later this month, his next project is a sexual thriller called Attachment, which will have Sharon Stone playing a teacher who cheats on her husband with one of her students. According to what Kaye told Coming Soon, Tom Felton has been cast to star opposite Stone, playing the student her character has an affair with. Beyond his Mrs. Robinson-esque sexual exploits, Felton will play the student antagonist, who apparently goes on to stalk Stone’s character, while dating her own daughter.

Felton appears to be keeping busy since his days of playing Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films. His first post-Deathly Hallows role had him surrounded by primates in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And coming up, he’s starring alongside Ashley Greene in Todd Lincoln’s The Apparition.

Felton is breaking away from being type-cast, and playing Cub to Sharon Stone's Cougar is certainly a departure from Draco.

The Apparition: New photo of Ashley Greene and Sebastian Stan

The Apparition stars Ashley Greene, Sebastian Stan, Tom Felton, and is directed by Todd Lincoln.

Synopsis: When frightening events start to occur in their home, young couple Kelly (Ashley Greene) and Ben (Sebastian Stan) discover they are being haunted by a presence that was accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment. The horrifying apparition feeds on their fear and torments them no matter where they try to run. Their last hope is an expert in the supernatural (Tom Felton), but even with his help they may already be too late to save themselves from this terrifying force…

The Apparition will be released to theaters on August 24, 2012.

Recap: Teen Choice Awards!

Kaley Cuoco Credit: Jason Merritt; Photos: Getty
The Teen Choice Awards are here!
The Kardashians open the show by announcing Will I Am. Maybe it’s because I’m sitting at home watching it, but he sounds horrible. It feels like the Super Bowl all over again.
The host Kaley Cuoco is looking adorable as she tries hyping up the crowd, getting intermittent screams from the crowd. She has some fun with Tyler Posey, before she finally introduces the sexy cast of the Vampire Diaries, Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder present for Choice movie actor Romantic comedy: Ashton Kutcher takes home the surf board, beating out Josh Duhamel, Penn Bagley, and Adam Sandler. Ummm, did anyone else see Fergie’s reaction to Ashton winning? All I can say is wow. Ashton closes his acceptance speech by singing Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, and the crowd sings along.
Zooey Deschanel and Shaun White present for Choice Comedian Daniel Tosh, George Lopez, Ellen Degeneres, Andy Sandberg, Jimmy Fallon. Ellen takes the win, and is absolutely adorable in her acceptance speech.
Kaley comes back from commercial at the DJ booth. Katie and Megan interview LL Cool  J, kinda. Its mostly them chatting back and forth, with LL having little to do or say, that little segment was completely lost on me.
Choice movie actor Sci-fi/fantasy Taylor Lautner is up to present next. Choice TV actress Drama, Blake Lively, Olivia Wilde, Josie Maran, Emily Deschanel, Shailene Wooley. Blake wins and she also accepts for Choice TV Drama in which Gossip Girl won. Her acceptance speech is mostly for Gossip girl, but its short and sweet.

Kellan Lutz and Ashley Green, winners of Scene Stealers in Movie for the second year in a row, thank their fans and announce Selena Gomez has won Choice  awards. For Choice Actress for Wizards of Waverly Place, Choice Hottie female, Selena and the Scene win Choice band, and Choice single of the year, and Choice love song. She comes out and sings Love You Like a Love Song. The acoustics sound a little off, but she doesn’t sound completely horrible. And her dress, which reminds me of a mullet (short in the front, and long in the back) looks amazing on her.

Kaley is back in the crowd, asking about the debt ceiling this time, and he actually answers. As much as I love Kaley, these little bits are not working for me. Cat Deeley and LL Cool J get to award Teen Choice Hissy fits. Mark Wahlberg the Other Guys, Ed Helms Hangover 2, Robert Downey Jr Due Date, Kristen Wiig Bridesmaids. Ed Helms wins!
Katie LaClerc and Vanessa Marano welcome Poreotics to the stage.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Tom Felton come out to announce for Choice movie actress comedy Kristen Wiig, Eve Mendez, Cameron Diaz, Maya Rudolph, Anna Faris. Cameron Diaz takes home the surfboard.
Avril Lavigne and Nikki Reed  introduce Jason DeRulo. Whatever sound problems they were having earlier, Jason sounds amazing.
All Star Weekend bring back the Poreotics, where Kaley crashes through the dance. She brings out the next presenters Tyler Posey and Charice. Demi Lovato wins Choice Song of the Summer for Sky Scrapper, and the Acuvue Inspire Award.
Tyra Banks talks about Sean Kingston’s horrible accident, and recovery, welcoming him to the stage.Choice Music Male Artist Cee-Lo Green, Jason DeRulo, Enrique Inglesias, Justin Beiber, Bruno mars.  Bieber wins. He also wins Choice TV Villian, Choice Twit, Choice Male Hottie.
Kaley welcomes Joe Jonas and Rachel Bilson to award the Choice Vampire with vampire teeth and all. Rachel and Joe touch on cancer bites, their campaign begins on Halloween. Nina Dobrev, Robert Pattinson, Paul Wesley, Nikki Reed, Ian Somerhalder, Alexander Skarsgard. I’m a little sad that Robert won, but I can’t say I’m surprised. All I have to say is What’s with the hair? Robert talks more about blood cancer and Cancer Bites, the #1 cancer for teens and young adults.
Shane West and Lucy Hale welcome OneRepublic to the stage. These guys sound amazing, but then they always do.
Jason Bateman and Elizabeth Banks after dropping their perspective film names, finally announce Choice Movie actor Drama Robert Pattinson, Jesse Eisenberg, Cam Gigandet, Bradley Cooper, Shia LaBeouf. Robert Pattinson wins. The crowd goes wild, but there’s no sign of a smile when the camera finds Nikki Reed.
Zoe Saldana and Chris Hemsworth, best combo presenters in my opinion, present for the final Harry Potter awards. Choice Movie Sci-fi/Fantasy, Choice summer Movie, Choice Summer Movie Star Male and female (Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson), Choice Actress Sci-fi fantasy (Emma Watson), Choice lip lock (Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson), Choice villain (Tom Felton). Rupert Grint and Tom Felton accept the awards. And Daniel appears via satellite. With that the awards show is done. Congratulations to all the winners!
