"Venom" (2018) Review

The following review will be spoiler-free. A more in-depth review (which will include spoilers) will be posted on YouTube here in mid-October after folks have had time to view the film spoiler-free.

With "Venom" having grossed approximately $205 million on its opening weekend, it's become evident that both passionate and casual film-goers are shifting away from the pool of film critics that were once regarded as an important voice on gauging quality. While audiences are diverse in backgrounds and taste, the top tier of film critics are less so.

Regardless of the many negative reviews criticising aspect of the film ranging from the story to the shifts in tone throughout the script, viewers have turned up in full force and had a great time (as evidenced by consistently high audience scores on various sites that compile them). But let us briefly examine these so-called criticisms that seem to run rampant among the "professional" reviews.

Without getting too specific, the plot of "Venom" does make sense if you pay attention. The first act introduces Tom Hardy's character, Eddie Brock, and gives the audience an important insight into him. His moral compass, the way he treats others, and what relationship he values most are all crucial fixtures of his character. These are all points to remember as the plot unfolds further; they give context to significant developments in the story.

The introduction of the alien symbiote known as Venom to Eddie Brock's body and mind catalyses a bounty of comedic gems ranging from verbal banter taking place in Eddie's mind, to the physical antics of Eddie as he struggles to find a new equilibrium after being invaded by this entity. While some have criticised the drastic shift in tone that this creates relative to the more serious tone of Eddie's character introduction, this is yet another aspect that does make sense if you only bother to think about what has happened. Venom and Eddie have merged but they remain entirely distinct characters and personalities relative to one another. This comedic introduction is not merely a form of entertainment and merriment for the audience's sake, but lends itself to the story-telling. It conveys deeper insight into who Venom is and why Eddie would struggle so much to have this alien presence inside of him, besides the obvious differences in biological make-up.

The human condition does not have a singular tone. There are highs and lows, laughter and tears, and everything in-between. Regardless of this being a single film, it seems odd for critics to be so hung-up on there being different 'tones' in the film when even the most saccharine and cheerful of romantic comedies will have a sad conflict to drive the central couple apart so as to give them a reason to dramatically reunite and resolve the issue. With there being more live-action superhero films and television series than ever, it's important to find a way to innovate past the more formulaic tendencies. If filmmakers and studios don't, they run the risk of the project being stale, losing the audience's interest, and in turn miss out on further profits or opportunities to tell more stories.

"Venom" is a film that combines drama, black comedy, horror, and science-fiction genres, among other things. It's entirely unique in it's execution and has offered tremendous fun, laughter, and excitement. This is why it has turned a profit. Anyone could have predicted that Tom Hardy would give a strong performance, and that is exactly what he did. Riz Ahmed also offers an interesting, enigmatic portrayal, with the only downside being that there should have been more of it.

Hardy has already revealed that an approximate 30 to 40 minutes of his favourite bits to film were scrapped from the final cut, and the current rumour surrounding this was that this was done to make the film move from an R-rating to a PG-13. This is yet another example of how clashes between studios and filmmakers can lead to creative casualties. It seems unlikely that the general public will ever get to see these missing parts, though it would certainly be worth considering to include either certain deleted scenes or a full, extended version for DVD release.

With Hardy currently signed on for three "Venom" films, all interested in seeing this universe continue to expand would be wise to catch the film during its theatrical run since those profits will be crucial to determining what happens next. Also, be sure to stick around for the mid-credit and post-credit scenes.

Venom is now playing in cinemas.

Sony Pictures and Valiant Announce Five-Picture Deal to Bring BLOODSHOT, HARBINGER, and HARBINGER WARS to Big Screen

Sony Pictures and Valiant Announce Five-Picture Deal to Bring BLOODSHOT, HARBINGER, and HARBINGER WARS to Big Screen

Landmark Plan to Bring Dual, Award-Winning Superhero Franchises Together in Shared Universe Crossover Film Event

Valiant Entertainment and Sony Pictures today announced a deal to bring two of Valiant's award-winning comic book superhero franchises—BLOODSHOT and HARBINGER—to the big screen over the course of five feature films that will culminate in the shared universe crossover film, HARBINGER WARS.

BLOODSHOT, arriving in theaters in 2017, will kick off the five-picture plan leading to HARBINGER WARS and will be directed by David Leitch & Chad Stahelski (John Wick) from a script by Jeff Wadlow (Kick Ass 2) and Eric Heisserer (Story of Your Life). Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe from Original Film (The Fast and the Furious franchise) and Dinesh Shamdasani from Valiant Entertainment will produce the film. Matthew Vaughn and Jason Kothari will serve as executive producers.

HARBINGER will follow shortly thereafter from a script by Eric Heisserer (Story of Your Life). Sony and Valiant remain tight-lipped about potential directors. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe from Original Film (The Fast and the Furious franchise) and Dinesh Shamdasani from Valiant Entertainment will produce.

Both BLOODSHOT and HARBINGER will be followed by sequels before the title characters confront each other head on in HARBINGER WARS—a motion picture directly inspired by Valiant’s critically acclaimed 2013 comic book crossover of the same name. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the five-picture HARBINGER WARS initiative for Sony Pictures.

“Valiant is one of the most successful publishers in the history of comics, and Neal is one of the best action producers in the business today. This is a formidable partnership that will bring two incredibly commercial franchises with global appeal together on the big screen,” said Sony Entertainment Motion Picture Group President Doug Belgrad. “The long-term plan that begins with BLOODSHOT will be a considerable priority for Sony in the months and years to come.”

Brought back from the dead and infused with cutting-edge nanotechnology by private security contractor Project Rising Spirit, Bloodshot is a nearly unstoppable killing machine equipped with enhanced strength, speed, endurance, and healing. Created by Kevin VanHook, Don Perlin, and Bob Layton in 1992, Bloodshot is one of the most successful new comic book characters of the past two decades with more than 100 issues published and lifetime sales of more than 7 million copies in multiple languages around the world. After returning with a sold-out new series in 2012, Bloodshot’s latest chapter recently began with the release of Bloodshot Reborn #1 in April—the first issue of a new series from New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire and artist Mico Suayan.

Centered on telekinetic teenage runaway Peter Stanchek and his recruitment into the mysterious Harbinger Foundation by secretive CEO and philanthropist Toyo Harada, Harbinger was created by former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter and artist David Lapham in 1992. Having sold more than 5 million copies worldwide in multiple languages across more than 60 issues, Harbinger returned with a new series in 2012 to multiple sold-out printings and widespread critical acclaim.

Bloodshot and Harbinger collide in Harbinger Wars—Valiant’s 2013 crossover event from writersJoshua Dysart and Duane Swierczynski with art by Clayton Henry, Clayton Crain, and Pere Perez. Valiant’s first crossover of the modern era, Harbinger Wars would go on to become the year’s best-selling crossover event from an independent publisher and spawned multiple sold-out printings.

“Bloodshot and Harbinger are two of the great untapped franchises anywhere in comics,” said producer and founder of Original Film, Neal H. Moritz. “In partnership with Sony and Valiant, we look forward to building the next great generation of superhero films.”

“Sony Pictures and Neal Moritz are the ideal partners to bring the world of Bloodshot and Harbinger to life,” said Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani. “They understand exactly what makes these characters tick and the exciting potential that they hold. These films are just the first step in partnership with Sony to bring Valiant’s biggest heroes to new audiences worldwide.”

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, Valiant is one of the most successful comic book publishing companies in the history of the medium with more than 81 million comics sold and a library of more than 2,000 distinct characters. Established by a brain trust of legendary comics creators, Valiant’s heroes and villains inhabit the largest independently owned superhero universe anywhere in comics. Re-established in 2005 as Valiant Entertainment, the company returned to great commercial and critical success in 2012, winning a Diamond Gem Award for Publisher of the Year and numerous industry awards and accolades. To date, Valiant’s titles consistently rate among the best reviewed in comics.

Valiant’s comic book universe—which includes the best-selling superheroes Bloodshot, Harbinger, X-O Manowar, Shadowman, and Archer & Armstrong, among many others—is characterized by a grounded, character-driven approach to storytelling. Its stories take place in a world only subtly removed from our own—one inspired by real-world science and inhabited by morally ambiguous heroes that often forgo capes and secret identities.

In March, Valiant announced that it partnered with Beijing-based entertainment company DMG for nine-figures of film financing capital for the production of theatrical films and television programs based on Valiant’s library of iconic superhero characters.

With over fifty films released, Neal Moritz’s worldwide box office gross exceeds $7 billion. His hits include: the Jump Street franchise, The Fast and The Furious franchise, I Am Legend, XXX, Click,Sweet Home Alabama, S.W.A.T., Battle: Los Angeles, and The Green Hornet.

In addition to BLOODSHOT, HARBINGER, and HARBINGER WARS, Moritz also has several films in development with Sony Pictures, including Passengers, Christian the Lion, 23 Jump Street, Cliffhanger,Rockets Red Glare, and A Prophet.

Could one of these two be the new Spiderman?

Since Marvel announced that Spider-man as coming home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) the internet has been abuzz with who should play the webslinger next. Although he put on a pretty good performance, Andrew Garfield is officially out. Variety is reporting that Marvel is looking to send the old back to high school yet again, and they're looking for a younger actor to play him.

So far on the top of the list are Dylan O'Brien (Teen Wolf, The Maze Runner) and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson, Fury), both aged 23.

Dylan O'Brien in particular seems to be well suited for the role of Peter Parker. His character on Teen Wolf, Stiles, delivers Peter's brand of sarcasm with perfection. His work alone in Season 3B of Teen Wolf, showcased that he has the acting chops to pull off a some difficult emotional feats. His turn in last year's The Maze Runner also received great reviews, and widened his fan base. If there is one thing that Dylan O'Brien brings to the table over Logan Lerman is a rabid fan base.

Lerman certainly has the blue eyes and boyish good looks of Peter Parker, and he was at one time a front runner before Garfield landed the role in 2012. Logan Lerman has lead the Percy Jackson franchise, and impressed many with his turn in Fury. But he has yet to prove he has what it takes to deliver the comedic barbs that Peter Parker is so well known for.

No offers have been made so far.

A new actor playing Spider-man may not be the only change that takes place. There is also buzz that it won't be Peter Parker this time around, but instead Miles Morales that suits up. In the comics Morales was of mixed heritage, whose father is African American and mother is Puerto Rican. This would be a great addition to the Marvel canvas, adding not only youth, but diversity.

Rapper Donald Glover has long been a fan favorite to play Morales, and the character may have even been visually based off him. But, if they're going for youth, Glover is getting a bit old to play Morales at 31. In the past Sony has cast Toby Maguire 26, and Andrew Garfield 28 to play a high schooler, so its still a possibility.

One suggestion, skip over Peter Parker, and even Miles Morales, and go with Miguel O'Hara. Granted his origin story would have to be altered from the comics, but the idea of a geneticist asked to create new corporation-controlled super-powered soldiers called "corporate raiders" and then getting drugged and blackmailed to continue his work when he sees he toll on humanity his work is doing, isn't so far off base. Too complicated? They can go with the high school introduction, either would work to introduce the character. With O'Hara you can introduce a Latino character, and one that audiences won't be completely familiar with yet. Marvel likes to take their lesser known characters and make them into money making rockstars.

If you read the twitter feeds of the writers here at Museled, @Suepafly and @LadyJenevia you'll know that we not only love this idea, but are adamant that Peter Parker has had his time in the sun and it's time for another Spiderman incarnation. We've seen two different takes of Spiderman in a short period of time, and although we're ready for a new one, we don't want to see the same story rehashed again. Futhermore, we think another Teen Wolfer would be perfect for the job of bringing O'Hara to the big screen.

Tyler Posey is also 23, like O'Brien and Lerman. He's got the charm and agility to pull off any Spidey persona, even as Peter Parker. He brings a level of enthusiasm and energy few could match. Not only is he personable, and extremely likable, he can deliver snark with the best of them. He's got the whole teenager thing down. Ethnically he's a match too. Posey, too is of Irish, English, and Scottish ancestry on his father's side, and of Mexican ancestry on his mother's. And, just like O'Brien, he has a rabid fan base that would be happy to transition with him over to the Marvel world.

Whoever Sony chooses to step into the red and blue tights, they have to make that decision soon. Marvel wants to introduce the new actor playing Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War,” in theaters in 2016, before launching his own solo franchise at Sony in 2017.
