"To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You" Review

Plot Premise: Picking up from the events of the first film, Lara Jean is exploring her new relationship (a real one this time) with Peter Kavinsky. However, will the points of conflict established between them in the first film be too much for them to stay together? Perhaps the return of John Ambrose, a recipient of one of Lara Jean's letters, will further drive a wedge between them...

The Good: Lana Condor is always a delight to watch. She's incredibly charming and endearing as a young protagonist in a teen film.

The Bad: The colour grading is shockingly hideous. There is a blueish/greenish tint to every scene to the point of making beige walls and human flesh look sickly and off. Peter Kavinsky does truly awful things in this film to Lara Jean, compounding the awfulness he exhibited in the first film, and is never held accountable for any of it. The film puts forth a truly harmful message to young girls about the type of behaviour they should tolerate and romanticise in the people they date. (For a more specific, spoiler-filled explanation of his behaviour, watch the spoiler review embedded below).

Who This Film Is For: Naive teens that don't know any better. No one with common sense should enjoy this.

Shazam (2019) Review

Family is more than just a word. It's also the central theme of the latest DCEU release, "Shazam," a notably more youth-oriented film in the successful franchise than its predecessors. Though Zachary Levi has been the face of this film, it's Asher Angel whose dramatic performance is the most important grounding point of the film. At only sixteen years old, Angel brings an incredibly honest and heartfelt performance of Billy Batson, a child on the run and searching for a family and home to call his own. It's no surprise that Levi's comedic chops are put to good use as the 'Shazam' persona that manifests when young Billy is gifted with the ability to transform himself into a virtually indestructible superhero. Levi's exuberance and infectious charm are sure to garner him a whole new legion of fans once this film has it's wider release.

Mark Strong is another strong point of the film, as the tormented villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, who has spent his life searching for the same power that Billy eventually gains. Strong has had a career full of successful runs in characters with grit and darkness, and this is sure to be another fan-favourite role in his body of work. The stories for both Billy and Sivana fit together cohesively, for how they reflect the opposite ends of the spectrum in regards to childhood loss and trauma. While both characters are given back story to bring explain some of their worse habits, their arcs across the film reflect the deeper message that in the end it's not traumas that define a person's worth in life but their actions instead. The diverse ensemble cast offer an excellent range of solid performances, from the other foster children to the supporting characters of Sivana's story. Director David F. Sandberg also treats the adults in the audience to some creative horror-influenced imagery without being too intense for the many children that are sure to turn up for this fun ride.

Score: 8/10

Los Angeles, CA, June 8, 2015 – Los Angeles-based Just Singer Entertainmentand Vancouver-based Sepia Films have announced the airdate for the powerful new television movie PERFECT HIGH set in the world of teenage drug use. The film is scheduled to air Saturday, June 27 at 8/7C on Lifetime in the US and Sunday, July 5 at 8ET/5PT on SuperChannel in Canada. The film stars Bella Thorne in a bold departure from her earlier work and an outstanding ensemble cast including Israel Broussard, Daniela Bobadilla, Ross Butler, Jasmine Sky Sarin and Matreya Fedor.
Inspired by the shocking rise in heroin addiction among suburban teenagers,PERFECT HIGH stars Bella Thorne (The DUFF; Blended; Shake it Up!) as Amanda, a star high school dancer who starts using prescription painkillers after being sidelined by a knee injury. Feeling neglected and isolated, Amanda is adopted by an ultra cool group of friends, including Carson (Israel Broussard, The Bling Ring), Riley (Daniela Bobadilla, Anger Management) and Nate (Ross Butler, Teen Beach Movie 2). She quickly becomes part of their inner circle, which means sharing her pills, having regular “pharm” parties, and falling in love for the first time. At the same time, her new habits affect her dance team performance and raises concerns among her family, and old friends and teammates. As their drug use inevitably spirals into addiction, Amanda and her friends resort to lying, stealing and worse to fund their habit. Their lives are forever altered when a classmate begins selling them heroin disguised as a cheaper painkiller from Mexico.
Directed by Vanessa Parise (Jack and Jill vs. the World; Kiss the Bride) and written by Anne-Marie Hess, PERFECT HIGH was executive produced by Sheri Singer of Just Singer Entertainment (Girl vs. Monster; Jackie, Ethel, Joan: Women of Camelot; the Halloweentown franchise) and produced by Sepia Films’ Tina Pehmeand Kim C. Roberts (The Games Maker, Sundance 2015; In Their Skin, Tribeca 2012; A Shine of Rainbows, TIFF 2010).
Singer became passionate about making Perfect High after realizing, “heroin was no longer a street drug that was bought in back alleys but in fact was being sold at schools, Starbucks, parking lots. Normal, good kids were getting involved in doing it and often the gateway drug is painkillers from the medicine cabinets of their parents and relatives.” Producer Tina Pehme explains, “One thing you’ll see in our film is the realistic progression, how just an ordinary girl goes from getting a prescription for an injury into a full-blown drug addict. It’s one little step at a time. And it can happen to anyone. It could be you. It could be your child.”
PERFECT HIGH’s premiere evening June 27 will feature stars Bella Thorne, Daniela Bobadilla, Ross Butler, Israel Broussard and co-stars Jasmine Sky Sarin and Matreya Fedor live-tweeting the broadcast from a premiere party and event hosted by Chelsea Briggs of Hollywire TV.
