Gotham S04E22 "No Man's Land" Recap

Selina is rushed to the hospital, with Bruce close by her side, while Alfred bring Jeremiah to the GCPD. While in the holding cell, Jeremiah demands that Jim bring him Bruce Wayne so they can speak and in exchange Jeremiah will tell him where some other back-up bombs are hidden.

Oswald has brought Grundy and Tabitha to Strange so that he can turn him back into Butch. The plan is to flush his body with anti-toxins, several blood transfusions from three different victims being held hostage, and then his body will be jolted with some electric shocks to restart his heart. Tabitha gets a call about Selina being shot and resolves to go hunt down Jeremiah and shoot him dead as revenge.

Jim sends Fox to search for which of the generators are also bombs but it's unclear just how many have been created since Jeremiah was notoriously secretive about his work and Bruce trusted him to work as he pleased. Ra's al Ghul watches from a safe distance as one of Jeremiah's bombs kills the mayor and everyone else in his office. Jim continues to beat up Jeremiah, demanding the location of the bombs, but Jeremiah refuses to say anything before he first gets to talk to Bruce Wayne. The interrogation is interrupted by the arrival of military personnel who declare they will take over leadership of the operation. The military Major insists that Bruce Wayne be brought to the station and orders that Jim be arrested when he tries to intervene. Jim is about to be transported away when Riddler arrives and knocks Jim's guards and then Jim himself out.

Jim wakes in the Narrows as Riddler's hostage. Riddler is determined to kill Nygma by gradually laying more weight onto Jim, believing that once Jim is free then Lee will be freed from her old self and become the person he believes her to truly be.

Ra's al Ghul visits Barbara and declares he is leaving Gotham and wants her to come with him. He thinks that part of the Demon's Head may still be in her and offers her the opportunity to join him so they can rule the League of Shadows together. He says that the destruction of Gotham will bring about the rise of his heir, someone that he foresaw long ago (Batman, obviously).

Bruce is angry to have been brought down to the station with Alfred against his will and resolves to get his encounter with Jeremiah over with so he can return to Selina. Jeremiah claims that the bomb that killed the mayor was the only one left and there weren't any more bombs since the plan was all working towards getting Bruce to the station. Jeremiah makes Bruce realise that Ra's al Ghul has gotten to him and orchestrated a larger plan. Right on cue, Ra's breaks Jeremiah out of police custody and takes Bruce with him.

Lee interrupts Riddler's games with Jim and convinces him that she no longer loves Jim. She also declares that she's leaving that night and that he is free to come with her but only if he doesn't kill Jim, as she will be the one to decide who she is and not him or any other man. Riddler taunts Jim, saying that she has chosen him and leaves him free to escape and resume his attempts to save Gotham.

Alfred visits Tabitha and Barbara at the club, demanding to know where Ra's al Ghul is. Barbara says that Ra's plans to flee Gotham with Bruce and Jeremiah and that she, Tabitha, and Alfred should team up since she wants to kill Ra's, Tabitha wants to kill Jeremiah, and Alfred wants to rescue Bruce. Their scheming is interrupted by Oswald who demands to be involved in the action.

Lee catches up to Jim as he's leaving and gives him the keys to a car to get away. He admits that if he could go back, he would ask her to run away with Gotham so they could make a life together. She says that he wouldn't be himself if he'd done that, admits she reciprocates his feelings, kisses him goodbye, and tells him to go save Gotham while she will indeed be leaving Gotham. It's then that Jim gets a call from Harvey informing him of Jeremiah's escape, Bruce's kidnapping, and the fact that they've taken all the bombs.

Bruce and Jeremiah are brought to Ra's at a location away from the impending destruction to come. Ra's says that he and Jeremiah are doing all of this to build Bruce into the Dark Knight he is destined to become from the destruction of Gotham. Jeremiah's motivations are more so rooted in his desire to have Bruce be the brother Jerome never could be.

Jim and the other detectives correctly determine that the bombs are set up to destroy every bridge out of Gotham. Ra's intends for the city to fall into lawlessness. Barbara arrives at the lair intent on killing Ra's with the mystical dagger reformed. All the bridges are being evacuated since there are vans placed on each one containing a bomb. Meanwhile a fight breaks out at the lair between Barbara's group and Ra's. Finally, Barbara is able to kill Ra's by having Bruce grip the knife in his hands while she forces them into Ra's abdomen. All the bombs go off, destroying the path in and out of Gotham. As Ra's is dying, he tells Bruce to either stay Bruce Wayne or accept his destiny to become the Dark Knight.

Lee decides to stay in the Narrows since the people will need her now more than ever. She breaks up with Nygma, who determines that she was never going to leave with him. Lee stabs him as he's preparing to stab her but as she's walking away, he pulls the knife out his abdomen and stabs her too. They kiss and then collapse from their wounds.

Oswald and Tabitha return to Strange's set-up and find that Butch has been restored from his Grundy state. He and Tabitha are overjoyed and declare their love for one another. They kiss and Butch thanks Oswald, saying he will give him anything he needs. Oswald says he considers Butch a friend and apologises before shooting him in the chest out of revenge for Tabitha killing Oswald's mother. Tabitha tries to attack Oswald but he shoots her in the leg to stop her in her tracks. Oswald vows to kill her once he believes she has suffered enough and has his men escort her out.

Bruce catches up to the hospital personnel who inform him that Selina has suffered spinal damage that is likely permanent. Selina is being boarded up on the last ambulance that is being led to the boats that are taking the patients out of Gotham. Bruce is offered the opportunity to go with them but decides to stay in Gotham and embrace his destiny as the city's protector. Alfred tells him Jeremiah and Gotham are not Bruce's responsibility but Bruce declares that he is making it his. Alfred says he'll stay with Bruce but Bruce tells him to go with her, saying he needs to know that Selina is safe. Alfred agrees to go with her but vow to return and find Bruce.

Gotham is being evacuated and even the majority of law enforcement personnel are going with them. The city is going to be overrun with criminals within mere hours, but Jim resolves to stay and fight for the city. The various iconic villains the show has introduced begin to claim their respective territories and wreak their different brands of havoc.

Oswald discovers Lee and Riddler's bodies and brings them to Strange, ordering that they be "fixed." The remaining men from the League of Shadows swear their allegiance to Barbara. Tabitha then arrives and tells her about Oswald's betrayal. Barbara then declares men as the enemy and has her women kill the male League members.

Jim, Harvey, and Fox agree to team up with any other folks that have stayed behind to protect it. Bruce is shown to be on the streets roughing up some criminals in search of Jeremiah when he spots a searchlight in the sky that Jim has had Fox set up on top of GCPD Headquarters. Bruce goes to meet Jim on the roof, telling him that they need to go block by block restoring justice to Gotham, and the searchlight serves as a symbol against the darkness.

Gotham S04E21 "One Bad Day" Recap

Jeremiah arrives at GCPD headquarters with his followers in tow behind him. He informs Harvey and the other officers that Jim Gordon is dead and that if they don't do what he wants, he will detonate more bombs planted all over the city, including if they kill him since he's installed a dead man's switch. Jeremiah declares that while his brother wanted to just destroy things he wants to rebuild it after it's been destroyed. He orders Harvey to get the city evacuated within six hours or else everyone left in Gotham will die. He then detonates one of the bombs he has planted in order to ensure that Harvey understand what he's capable of.

Oswald and Grundy arrive at Barbara's club and informs them of what they've learned from the man they tortured, whom they've brought along. They now know that Jeremiah is the one in charge of this latest attack. Oswald offers them the opportunity to partner up and Barbara rejects it until Oswald says they plan to use part of the profits to cure Grundy, prompting Tabitha to force Barbara to agree to work together.

Bruce visits the station and learns from Harvey that Jim is likely dead. Jeremiah then calls Bruce and says that he needs to do what he says or else Alfred will die, telling him an address to come to.

Jim has escaped the bunker with blueprints of Jeremiah's plans but is knocked out from the blast. Nygma had already ordered someone to follow him and that person had rescued him and brought him back to the Narrows where Lee has patched him up. She tells him how Jeremiah blew up the clock tower and the city is being evacuated. Jim shows her the blueprints and asks to take them to Harvey but shedders him to stay put and rest while she takes the blueprints to be deciphered.

Selina accompanies Bruce to the location Jeremiah sent him to. Selina scopes out the roof while Bruce enters the building and is immediately tormented with a video of Alfred being beat up.

Lee tells Nygma to decode Jeremiah's plans in order to trade the solution to the GCPD in exchange for clemency. Nygma is weary that Lee only wants him to do this to help Jim but she assures him that if Jeremiah destroys half the city it will disrupt all the plans they have for the Narrows. He begrudgingly agrees to get to work on decoding the plans.

Jeremiah is confronted buy Oswald, Grundy, Barbara, and Tabitha, who demand a large ransom sum under threat of destroying the bombs' core relay. Jerome claims to be taking their offer seriously and calls the mayor in order to demand a sum of money. Oswald tells tabitha that once they have the money they will kill Jeremiah, turn the core over to the police and be hailed as heroes. But Jerome proceeds to destroy the core himself and proceeds to implement his back-up plan which will have the bombs rewired to detonate in sequence ahead of schedule due to this interference.

Bruce continues to be tormented by the footage of Alfred being tormented and seemingly sprayed with a dose of Scarecrow's toxin while the recorded video of Jeremiah taunts him.

Nygma and Jim reluctantly work together to solve Jeremiah's blueprints. They determine the buildings that Jeremiah plans on detonating so that they will collapse and form the labyrinth he designed. Jim knocks Nygma out when he expresses a wish to take the plans to the mayor first in order to get himself and Lee pardoned. Jim proceeds to take it to the GCPD instead. Meanwhile, Oswald has called Harvey to warn him of Jeremiah's intent to rewire the bombs to directly communicate with each other and detonate them once he is at a safe distance. Fox is able to determine what this backup system is and that they can disrupt the signal of the first one in the sequence but they need to know where the bombs are first. Right on cue, Jim arrives at the station with the locations of the bombs.

Selina enters the hideout and finds some of Jeremiah's goons watching surveillance footage of Bruce being tormented. She is also snuck up on by Scarecrow before proceeding to fight the goons. Scarecrows sprays his gas and it infects one of the goons. Selina knocks the other goon out and fights Scarecrow who proceeds to leave while telling her that soon Bruce will be driven mad. Bruce is being sprayed with Scarecrow'd fear toxin and begins to hallucinate an insane version of Alfred attacking him. In actuality, Selina has freed the real Alfred who works with him to break him out of the fear that the toxin created.

Fox directs Harvey to the location of the first bomb and instructs him on how to active the kill switch. Time is of the essence as the bomb is preparing to detonate, and Jeremiah is at his bunker with all of his followers. The news plays at the bunker and Jim taunts Jeremiah's followers by saying he failed to kill him. Jeremiah says it doesn't matter since he will soon detonate the bomb. But by the time he hits the switch, Harvey has already deactivated it. The lack of sound of explosions prompts Jeremiah's followers to turn on him and want to leave. Jeremiah chides their fickle ways and says they're very predictable, before locking them in a room and pressing a purge button which triggers a fire to incinerate all of them.

Grundy turns on Oswald, demanding that he reveal the location of Strange. Tabitha says that she will be able to convince Strange to fix Grundy regardless of their lack of funding.

Jeremiah is piecing together how his plan was foiled and is preparing to start all over again. But it's then that Ra's al Ghul appears to him, proposing an alliance. He points out that this isn't just about Gotham, but about Bruce Wayne.

Jim visits Lee to thank her for her help and also to tell her that she should leave Gotham so that they don't have to inflict any further harm against one another, admitting in the process that he still cares about her and always will. He then leaves, while Nygma is revealed to have overheard the entire conversation.

Harvey returns to GCPD headquarters and is revered as a hero, finally having regained the honour he had previously lost.

Bruce, Selina, and Alfred make it back to Wayne Manor. Bruce thanks Selina for her help and the two kiss, after which Bruce ponders if his parents' deaths made him a little bit insane. Jeremiah is then revealed to have broken in and shoots Selina in the stomach, after which Alfred tackles him and begins beating him while Bruce tearfully tries to stop Selina's bleeding.

Gotham S04E20 "That Old Corpse" Recap

Jerome's followers gather for his funeral but a mysterious masked figure arrives to play a recorded posthumous message seemingly from Jerome about one more mission that begins with them digging up his body.

Back at the GCPD, Harvey offers Jim the opportunity to let Lee go for the crime of robbing the bank but Jim is determined to do what is right by the law. Jim offers Lee the opportunity to go free if she returns the money and gives up Nygma but she refuses to give in to any of those demands. Their interrogation session is interrupted by a package arriving for Jim. Inside is a tape Jerome left of his last will and testament. He tells Jim he wants him to throw a wake for him at the GCPD and say that he's already sent the invitations. Right on cue, Jerome's followers arrive outside the station dressed like circus performers and ready to break into the station.

Nygma and some other of Lee's followers are debating how to get Lee out of the station. He leads a few of the Narrows subservients to accompany him to the station. There, Jim is making a call to Alfred to warn him of the threat to the station and Jerome's recent antics left in the wake of his death. Bruce has left for a meeting with Jeremiah and Alfred agrees to go after him to make sure they are all safe.

Jim determines that Jerome always likes to put on theatrical displays to hide his true intentions. He devises a plan to get all the officers to sneak out of the side buildings so that they can surround the building once Jerome's followers have gotten inside. All the while they must also figure out what the true target is.

At his bunker, Jeremiah shows Bruce a new self-sustaining energy generator he has developed. Bruce then gets a call from Alfred who warns him of Jerome's recent attacks and subtly signals to Alfred to come after him. However, Alfred is attacked in the kitchen of Wanye Manor by unknown assailants. Jeremiah is alarmed by Bruce telling him about Jerome's attacks, believing that Jerome is actually alive again. He admits to Bruce that he was sprayed by a laughing gas Jerome left for him. Now Jeremiah is struggling with paranoia regarding whether or not Jerome is still alive. Bruce suggests that they go to Jerome's grave so they can see the body for themselves so Jeremiah can try to keep his sanity in check. But Bruce doesn't know that Jerome's followers dug up the body...

Back at GCPD, Jerome's followers burst into the building. Jim begins to organise a way for the officer and Lee to get out of the building and out of the path of the destruction coming at them. As the officers begin to back up, Lee is accidentally knocked unconscious on a fire extinguisher.

Bruce and Jeremiah arrive at Jerome's grave and Jeremiah becomes hysterical at seeing Jerome's grave dug up, running away while Bruce tries to catch up.

Grundy is furious at Oswald because they are hiding out at Falcone's manor biding their time. When they see the news report of Jerome's followers unleashing chaos at the GCPD station Oswald decides they should go down to find a way back to reclaiming their power. Jim and Harvey interrogate one of Jerome's followers who reveals that Bruce and Jeremiah will be dead soon, prompting Jim to go after them.

Nygma arrives at the station with the other Narrows residents intent on getting into the station to rescue Lee, who is just beginning to wake up from her unconscious state. Inside it's a state of disarray as Jerome's followers make a mess of everything in sight. Meanwhile, Oswald and Grundy take one of Jerome's followers captive to torture in order to learn who the true mastermind of recent things is in order to regain their power.

Bruce catches up to Jeremiah near some indoor grave slots and tires to reason with him. Jeremiah's grip on reality is slipping and he draws a gun on Bruce, claiming that Bruce has made a switch. He claims that Bruce is really Jerome wearing Bruce's face and he intends to put Jerome (Bruce) back in his grave where he really belongs.

Ed dons a clown disguise to get into the station and gets knocked out by Lee before she can recognise him. She immediately tends to him so they can get out of the station together.

Jim arrives at Jeremiah's bunker and finds the generator along with a tape left by Jerome in which he reveals he always intended to bring Jim to the bunker. It's then that the masked figure to deliver the tape of Jerome's first orders emerges and holds Jim at gunpoint. When Jerome is being choked by an unknown figure on the tape, Jim uses the distraction to attack the masked figure. The two fight and eventually Jim is able to knock them out. Upon pulling the mask off he discovers that it's Echo behind the mask.

Back at Jerome's grave, Bruce is still held captive by Jeremiah. They find Jerome's body propped against the grave but Jeremiah claims it's a fake and pulls out a razor blade he intends to use to cut Bruce's face off to reveal the truth.

Jim watches in horror as the tape of Jerome is revealed to actually be Jeremiah wearing prosthetics pretending to be Jerome. Bruce is then overpowered by some of Jerome's followers who Jeremiah then claims as his own. Jeremiah has fully succumbed to the effects of the gas, though he claims that its effects were only cosmetic since he now has a paler complexion more remnant of the Joker comic fans are most familiar with. He believes he must tear down the city in order to rebuild it and Jim learns that the generator has actually been modified into a bomb which Echo locks him in the room with. Jim barely escapes the room before the bomb goes off.

Jeremiah tells Bruce he doesn't want to kill him because he wants to show him all of what he is achieving. Jeremiah reveals how the generators Bruce helped build are bombs and it's then that several of the bombs go off in the city. Jeremiah tells Bruce that progress requires sacrifice and knocks Bruce out, leaving him unconscious on top of Jerome's body before heading off to steal more generators from Wayne Enterprises.

Gotham S04E19 "To Our Deaths and Beyond" Recap

Tabitha lures Bruce and Selina to the lair where she has teamed up with an outside faction of the League of Shadows. They are preparing a ritual in order resurrect Ra's al Ghul but require Bruce's blood to do it because he was the one to kill Ra's.

Back at the Narrows, Nygma has robbed several banks and brought back the bounties in order to distribute wealth to the inhabitants of the Narrows. Ed/Riddler wants to know what Lee sees him as and she says he's a friend though it's implied there's something more. Oswald arrives with Butch/Grundy, wanting to be brought along on the next robbery. Oswald also accuses Lee of stringing Riddler along with the promise of affection.

Ra's is angry at being brought back after all the work he did to finally be able to die, even going so far as to rip the throat out of one of his followers. They criticise Barbara's limited scope of what she wants to use her power for. Tabitha is horrified to learn that the Demon's Head doesn't automatically return to Ra's when he's resurrected and that he intends to rip it from her dead body if she doesn't give it back willingly.

When Ra's is reunited with Barbara he is disappointed by what he sees as her limited ambitions. He demands the return of the Demon's Head since she hasn't even unlocked the secrets it holds. He demeans her accomplishments and the two get into a fight before Ra's is forced to fight off the various women in the League that serve Barbara. Ra's kill and injure many of her followers before chasing her out into the street where Barbara gets away with the help of Bruce driving up in his new luxury car with Selina and Tabitha along for the rescue mission. They reconvene at Wayne Manor and Bruce deduces that he needs to be the one to kill Ra's since he was the one to kill him before. Barbara also theorises that she needs to be the one to kill him while having the Demon's Head in her hand, believing that this could be the key to unlocking her power.

Alfred tries to get the mystical knife back that Bruce used to kill Ra's from the historical society they had returned it to. When the man refuses to give it back, Alfred and Tabitha create a rouse that distracts all parties present so Selina can steal the knife and swap it for a decoy. Bruce and Barbara argue over who Selina should give the knife to and she only hands it over to Barbara after she holds Alfred at gunpoint. Selina feels defeated and leaves with Barbara and Tabitha after they shoot out Bruce's tire.

Riddler agrees to bring Oswald and Grundy along on his next robbery, claiming that the presence of Ed's lovestruck feelings is interfering with his criminal efficiency. Riddler promises that this next score will get each of them 100 million dollars and that they need to help him kill Lee.

Selina leaves Barbara and Tabitha upon learning that they don't have a more sophisticated plan, given Barbara's inability to control the Demon's Head or know a deeper purpose to using it. Selina returns to Bruce and Alfred to ask them for help to prevent Barbara from getting herself killed. When Barbara faces off against Ra's, she tries to stab him with the knife but it does nothing to kill him. The two fight briefly but then he gets the upper hand and starts to drain her. Bruce arrives and knocks them aside but is quickly pulled out of the commotion from the other members of the League. Barbara is impaled by the dagger but manages to unlock the secrets of the Demon's Head. She is able to master it but then Ra's threatens the life of Tabitha. Barbara willingly gives up the Demon's Head to save Tabitha's life and afterwards the female League members still recognise Barbara's worth as a leader and decide to continue serving her. Ra's is restored to his former state instead of his zombie-like condition. Bruce asks him to turn over the knife so he can kill him again but Ra's says today is not the day he will die and snaps the knife in half before disappearing. Barbara finally reconciles with Tabitha after all of their falling outs.

Riddler seemingly traps Lee with the intent to kill her but instead betrays Oswald and Grundy by leaving them trapped in a bank vault to be apprehended by the police. Riddler tells Lee that he knows she is using him but he will make her fall in love with him nonetheless because he understands her. The GCPD arrive sooner than expected and Lee declares that she will give herself up to them while Riddler will get away.

Finally, it's revealed that Ra's has had a vision of a cataclysmic even that will bring incalculable destruction to the city. This is the reason he has decided to stay alive for the time being in order to use the impending disaster to shape Bruce into a "dark knight of Gotham."

Gotham S04E18 "That's Entertainment" Recap

Jerome takes the interim mayor hostage along with many other powerful Gothamites, dosing one of them with Scarecrow's new laughing gas in the process. Penguin eventually sneaks away to visit Jim at the station and warn him of what Jerome has done.

Bruce has a birthday and Alfred gifts him with a new luxury car that also happens to be bulletproof so he will be better prepared on future missions to stay safe and protected.

Jerome brings the hostages to a music festival and orders Jim to bring him Jeremiah and Bruce Wayne in order for the hostages to be set free. Jim refuses, saying he will offer himself up in their place but Jerome refuses to negotiate with him and sets off one of the explosive collars he has set up on each of the hostages. Jim heads back to the station to determine a course of action, working alongside Bruce, Alfred, and Fox, and they all observe Jerome kill another one of the hostages on TV.

Barbara heads to an ancient door with the other members of the League of Shadows that only she can unlock as the new Demons Head.

The other Legion members have secretly begun to load up the laughing gas they forced scientists from Wayne Enterprises to engineer onto a blimp. While Bruce and Jeremiah make their way towards the festival stage, Jim has many snipers set up on various high points overlooking the stage where Jerome is set up but Jerome has his own men kill the snipers. He gives Jeremiah a knife and challenges him to try to kill him but m=knocks him down once he charges forward. A fight breaks out on stage while the blimp rises over the crowd and prepares to release the gas.

Oswald wakes up on board the blimp, having been knocked out and forced on board. The captain of the blimp is under hypnotized orders to release the gas once he is given the final signal. The GCPD takes out the rest of Jerome's men and is able to save the mayor once his collar malfunctions. Jim chases Jerome onto a roof and Oswald calls him to say he is on board the blimp. While Oswald manages to overpower the pilot and steer the blimp away from civilians, Jim is forced to shoot Jerome. Though Jerome willingly falls to his death, he first declares that he will live on.

Tabitha and Barbara fight over their differing beliefs regarding Barbara's new status. Barbara severs ties with her so her followers force her out and a fight breaks out. Tabitha is beat up by some of the women, after which another League faction still loyal to Ra's al Ghul pick her up off the street.

Jeremiah finds a gift left for him and opens it, not knowing it is a trick from Jerome that contains a modified version of the laughing gas which drives him insane.

Jim and Harvey charge after Jim and Scarecrow and they must flee with Jerome without harming Jeremiah.

Riddler brings Oswald to Lee, who is taken aback to be interacting with Riddler instead of Ed. They want Lee to help them but instead, Riddler gets captures by Grundy who brings him back to the Sirens who in turn bring him to Sofia. Oswald runs into Jim and Harvey on the streets. They want to bring Oswald back in but he pushes them to let him go and take Sofia out. Jim also wants Sofia out of the way but he wants to do it in a lawful way. Oswald and Jim reluctantly agree to an impasse so they can each carry on their way once they exchange information but Harvey insists on taking him into custody. Sofia's men emerge, still intent on killing Oswald and having overheard Oswald telling them about an important associate. A shoot-out commences during which Oswald is able to escape once more, this time with the help of Lee.

Lee brings Oswald to Mr. Freeze so he can be frozen and brought to Sofia as a sort of ice version of a Trojan horse, a plan that Riddler had put together. Riddler was being tortured but when Freeze brings Oswald to her she pays him off and orders that Riddler be brought to the pier to be killed. Oswald heads to the pier to save Riddler. Riddler is shocked that Oswald gave up his opportunity for revenge and Oswald explains that he is the only one he can trust.

Sofia and her men arrive at the psychiatric hospital where they end up in a shoot-out with Jim and Harvey. Jim tells Harvey to get Penn, the man they were looking for, and take him to safety while he will fight off the shooters. Sofia corners Jim, who ends up shot repeatedly. She tells him to beg for his life and then they can start over. Lee arrives in time to save Jim and shoots Sofia in the head, which results in Sofia being in a coma. After this, Lee returns to the Narrows and regains her power which she punctuates by smashing Sampson's hand with a hammer similar to what was done to her.

Jim wakes in the hospital wanting to confess to his collusion with Sofia to the GCPD but Harvey forces him to live with the guilt instead. Meanwhile, Bruce and Selina have reconciled due to their recent misadventures, and Barbara's intense headaches are revealed to her being affected by Ra's al Ghul's powers.

Gotham S04E12 "Pieces of a Broken Mirror" Recap

A group of drug addicts sneak into an abandoned building with a lab within. They're looking for some abandoned supplies but instead they come across a further physically matured version of Ivy Pepper emerging from a strange plant-like cocoon. One of the addicts gets too close and upon trying to touch her, she uses her abilities to sedate him.

Jim visits a brothel in search of Harvey Bullock. Harvey isn't there but Jim leaves a note for him with the owner of the brothel. He then runs into Alfred, who has been living in the Narrows after Bruce fired him and kicked him out of Wayne Manor. He helps Alfred fight off some thugs who tried to rob him.

Lee holds a meeting with the citizens of the Narrows. She wants to discuss a better way for everyone to conduct business. The meeting is going well until a man sends a toy plane armed with an explosive device after her. Grundy throws it at a window and it explodes to starting a fire in the building. Alfred and Jim help the citizens escape the building while Lee, Ed, and Grundy escape on their own. Grundy begins to have flashbacks from his formed life and regains his ability to speak, saying that he is Butch Gilzean. Butch later visits Tabitha and says that he still loves her.

The thugs that tried to rob Alfred thank him for saving the people from the burning building and revere him as a hero when they re-encounter him in a local diner. Alfred becomes concerned when he sees the waitress sporting a suspicious bruise on her head.

Jim and Fox visit the local toy maker Cosmo Frank, whose father is charge of managing the workshop. They want to trace the origins of the toy armed with explosives. Cosmo's father Griffin uses a toy to shoot bullets which creates enough of a distraction when combined with another explosion for him to get away.

Ivy breaks into a house where she steals some clothes and eats food from the fridge. She turns on the television and sees a commercial for Sirens. Selina is in the commercial and she recognises her. Once Ivy visits the club she is kicked out for acting up.

Alfred becomes friends with the diner waitress, Tiffany, who is revealed to have an abusive boyfriend. Alfred implores her to leave the man but she still goes with him. It's unclear exactly why Lee is being targeted but Jim continues his work. Later on Krank confronts Ed alone and claims that Ed was the one to hired him while using the "Riddler" alias. Ed has no memory of this encounter. Jim arrives and when Krank tries to attack him Jim shoots him dead. Jim asks him about who hired him and Ed claims that Krank was acting entirely on his own. Ed is shown to see his Riddler persona reflected back at him in the mirror.

Finally, Jim visits Harvey in the bar and tries to get him to come back to the GCPD but Harvey refuses to do so.

Gotham S04E11 "Queen Takes Night" Recap

Jim is accompanied by the GCPD on a raid that leads to their discovery of a badly wounded doctor that Professor Pyg operated on, while leaving behind a message on the wall written in blood.

Sofia has teamed up with Barbara, Tabitha, and Selina to go after Oswald. The gang war is well underway and the women torture some of Oswald's men to try to get answers on his whereabouts. But their search is interrupted by Falcone who calls Sofia back to his manor. He berates her for sleeping with Jim and says she is a disgrace to their family name. Oswald was the one who had called Falcone to bring him back to Gotham and he came willingly.

Jim arrives to the manor in search of Sofia and meets Falcone, who says he's glad he never killed Jim because when he finds out the truth that will be what destroys Jim. He has made a deal with Oswald to send Sofia out of Gotham for good and is confident that Oswald will keep the deal with him unlike how he was with Jim. Sofia says her goodbyes to Jim and despite the falling out with her father he says she is still his daughter. She pauses to take rose with her, saying they were planted by her mother. It's then that a black van comes driving up and men in black begin shooting. Jim returns fire but the men drive away. Falcone is killed and Sofia is shot in the stomach.

Zsasz confronts Oswald, asking if the rumours swirling in the city that Oswald was responsible for Falcone's death are true but Oswald denies the accusation. They attend his funeral along with others, including Jim and Sofia who is now in a wheelchair. She is angry at Jim for not arresting Oswald but he states he cannot do so without evidence to support this claim. Jim tells Harvey that Sofia was the one who bought him into the captain's position without his permission and that he won't make a move against Oswald unless he knows for certain he can put him away. Harvey warns Jim that leaving Penguin free has wreaked considerable havoc and it's time to put him away for once and all.

Oswald comes to the GCPD station and demands that Jim turn over Sofia but Jim takes a stand saying no one in Gotham gets to violate the law. The other officers rally behind Jim and refuse to be bought or intimidated by Oswald and escort him and his henchmen out of the building. Sofia shares the story of Oswald apparently killing Martin and Jim uses this information to finally arrest him. Oswald tells Jim Martin's death was faked and Zsasz took him out of town but Zsasz betrays Oswald and agrees to testify against Oswald in court. Jim tells Zsasz this doesn't mean he gets a free pass but Zsasz and him have an understanding that they will be on opposing sides once more after Penguin is death with first.

Zsasz was shaken by the death of Falcone, whom he was loyal to first so he swears loyalty to Sofia instead. Sofia proceeds to give the Iceberg Lounge to Barbara, Tabitha, and Selina.

Bruce's partying ways catch up with him when he is cited for a noise complaint. Once again, Alfred tries to confront him into getting back on the right path. They begin to argue and the confrontation escalates to the point of Alfred losing control of himself and punching Bruce who immediately leaves in a rage.

Ed continues to have visions of his Riddler persona, while struggling to remember who he is. Meanwhile, Tabitha kidnaps Grundy and is determined to make him remember who he once was. When speaking to him isn't enough, she begins to repeatedly hit him over the head to try to jog his memory since he had said her name right after she hit him in the head in the fighting ring. It doesn't seem to work so she gives up but then Grundy wakes up once more and is shown to remember being Butch Gilzean and has his speech capabilities restored.

Jim visits Sofia to hear more about her plans for her criminal empire but when he arrives Professor Pyg is also waiting for him. Sofia reveals that she was the one who sent Lazlo/Pyg to the city to wreak havoc on it as a serial killer. She also orchestrated the death on her father and her own injury so that she wouldn't be suspected of being responsible. Though Pyg was the one who shot her, under her orders, Sofia then kills him. She keeps her gun on Jim and tells him that he must choose one of two options. The first is to tell everyone the truth about how she was the one who killed Pyg and the chaos will continue in the city since she will reveal all of the misdeeds that tarnish his name. But if he takes the credit for killing Pyg, he will continue to be captain and be under Sofia's control. She calls in the attack and Jim decides to take credit. Sofia did much of this not only to gain control but to avenge her brother's death. Now she will be keeping an eye on Jim and have the entire GCPD under her control.

Bruce presents Alfred with some emancipation papers so Alfred is now no longer Bruce's guardian and threatens to have Alfred arrested for hitting him. Alfred is further fired as the butler of the house and Bruce warns him to be gone when he returns from partying. Alfred chooses to leave Wayne Manor.

Jim returns to the GCPD station and Harvey informs him that he is quitting, leaving behind his badge and gun in Jim's office. He gives one final push to Jim to fix the mess that he has made.

Penguin is yelling angrily in his Arkham Asylum cell. Another inmate calls out to him and offers to work with him. The inmate is revealed to be Jerome Valeska.

Gotham airs on Thursdays on FOX at 8/7c.

Gotham S04E10 "Things That Go Boom" Recap

At Arkham Asylum, Professor Pyg puts a record of Ave Maria on a gramophone. The other patients in the rec room are mostly calm except for one inmate who demands he turn it off because his mother used to beat him while playing it before he killed her while also having the song on. Pyg goads the inmate into attacking him to which he responds by snapping a record in half and killing the inmate with him.

Back at the GCPD, Jim and Fox examine the X-rays for Pyg which reveal that he has had numerous facial surgeries that prevent them from knowing his true identity. Jim asks Fox to work on trying to trace Pyg's origins. Jim heads out to his office where Sofia is waiting for him. She wants to continue their relationship and says that despite Oswald knowing about her buying Jim's spot as Captain, she has everything under control. Jim is upset to learn that Oswald knows about her bribery and remains uninterested in pursuing a relationship with Sofia.

Lee is hard at work as the new club leader in the Narrows. She has formed a court to bestow justice and settle disagreements amicably. A man comes in with a face injury, having been beaten by a gangster named Sampson. Ed suggests she send Grundy to beat him into staying in his own territory. Lee is weary of using brute force to enforce order when she's trying to keep things somewhat civilised.

Sofia returns home to find Oswald and Zsasz waiting for her. Oswald confronts her for lying to him and having a secret relationship with Jim. She tries to deny it but when Oswald presents further knowledge and evidence of her dealings with Jim she admits it, only to be further frightened by Oswald bringing in a torture specialist called The Dentist.

Jim vists Pyg in Arkham Asylum and goads him into revealing a Southern accent that gives Jim a lead to follow in tracing his origins.

Lee and Ed confront Sampson in his neighbourhood for trying to move in on her territory. She offers to pay him off of moving in but Sampson insists that he'll be taking her club and her neighbourhood by force. She offers to treat his coughing up blood and the other sick people in his neighbourhood, and he agrees to come by her clinic to begin treatment as well as demanding that he'll get 30% of the Fight Night profits.

Sofia convinces The Dentist to help her escape by threatening him and his family but she is promptly kidnapped by Barbara, Tabitha, and Selina. They want her to convince Oswald to not kill them but Sofia reveals that Oswald just tried to kill her because she is very close to taking over his underworld empire. Sofia says that if they let her go, Oswald will be dealt with. Barbara still wants to ransom Sofia back to Oswald.

Owald is talking to Martin who claims that Sofia made him lie about kissing Jim. Barbara calls to ransom Sofia back in exchange for her demands and he agrees. In actuality, he sends Zsasz out to kill all of them. Zsasz shoots a bazooka at the building but the women are able to escape out the back before it hits. Barbara swears revenge on Oswald.

Sofia vists Jim at the station and claims Oswald just tried to kill her and emotionally pleas for Jim to use his position of authority to take Oswald down. Jim deduces that Sofia is just trying to get him to kill Oswald for her as the final move in a multi-stepped plan she conceived of. Jim visits Oswald instead, sharing how Sofia visited claiming he tried to kill her. Jim doesn't want to arrest Oswald but is offering a deal that will result in Sofia leaving Gotham at nightfall and Oswald will be able to continue ruling his empire.

Lee and Ed return to the clinic and find it has been badly destroyed. Ed suggests she send Grundy to kill Sampson but she declares she has a better idea. She visits Sampson once more with Ed and tells him he needs to clear out of the Narrows by nightfall. She presents an antidote and tells him she had his drink poisoned. She will only give it to him if he leaves by the end of the day. He agrees.

Jim has Sofia arrested and escorted to the train station by another detective with the condition being that if she doesn't leave and stay gone, she will be put behind bars. Oswald is informed by Zsasz that Sofia has boarded her train, and then discovers that Martin has been kidnapped. Zsasz is sent after Sofia's train and discovers that she orchestrated Martin's kidnapping to ensure she'd escape. Sofia, Barbara, and Tabitha have Martin in their custody. Sofia wants to meet with Oswald. At the meet, the women have Martin in their clutches and Sofia demands Oswald turn over his empire or else she will kill Martin and him too. Oswald submits to Sofia's demands and Sofia gives Martin back. Oswald apologises to Martin for getting angry at him, then tells him to get into the car. He then tells the women that Martin will no longer be used as a pawn and then blows up the car. He declares that war has begun. The women are forced to retreat as gunfire erupts. Sofia tells the other women that they will win this war against Oswald.

Lee tells Ed that the side effects from being frozen have now dissipated. She held off on telling him because she likes seeing him return to the man he once was as opposed to the cold killer. He is more like the man she was friends with before.

Oswald is revealed to have orchestrated a scheme to fake Martin's death. He tells Martin he needs to go with Zsasz to somewhere outside of Gotham to stay safe, though Martin doesn't want to leave Penguin. Zsasz is skeptical of his needing to be the one to take Martin out of the city, believing he should be sent after Sofia, but Oswald assures him that he has something more insidious in store for Sofia.

Fox successfully reconstructs an image of what Pyg used to look like and by using Jim's lead into the Southern area, they're able to discover his previous identity as Lazlo Valetin. Lazlo was a serial killer in the South but didn't go after police officers nor did he have this "pig" persona. The case against him didn't fall apart but Lazlo escaped before they could put him on trial. Jim orders an extra guard to be placed on Pyg but when he arrives at Arkham to question him further, he finds that Pyg ha killed a guard and escaped, leaving behind the message "It's been fun James - Lazlo".

Meanwhile, Ed begins having hallucinations of his Riddler persona.

Gotham airs on Thursdays on FOX at 8/7c.

Gotham S04E09 "Let Them Eat Pie" Recap

Professor Pyg dons a new disguise and passes out doughnuts to homeless people. He then selects six of them to come back to a dining hall where he kills them by feeding them poisoned food. He then lays out a sizable supply of tools in order to remove various parts of their bodies.

When Jim gets to the GCPD office, he says goodbye to Harvey as he is leaving the Captain's office and preparing to take a leave of absence.

Sofia makes preparations for an upcoming fundraiser. Oswald visits and expresses his anger over Jim being promoted to the position of GCPD Captain and intends to find whomever authorized this against his wishes. Oswald is suspicious that Sofia was involved but won't make any moves against her until he can obtain proof of this. Sofia calls Jim to express her belief that Oswald is suspicious of her and may be coming after her and Jim. After Jim ends the call he gets another one but this time from Pyg, who declares that he has set up phase two. When Jim determines that Pyg is outside the station, he emerges to find a tent that's been set up containing two corpses being eaten by pigs.

Alfred scolds Bruce for his repeated dalliances with going out to party and how this facade of billionaire brat is taking too much of a toll on him. After killing Ra's he is now treading a dangerous line of using these antics as a unhealthy coping mechanism. Bruce is reminded of the annual tradition he had with his father to go on the top of a hill and each would leave behind a rock with their initials carved in them. Alfred tells Bruce to clean himself up and prepare for a walk.

Lucius tells Jim that the corpses from the tent were filled with materials used for making paper so he and Detective Harper head out to investigate an old paper plant a few blocks away that's been closed for some time. When they arrive there, they find other corpses and determine that Pyg has been cooking homeless remains. Pyg emerges and stabs Harper before taking her hostage before escaping.

Oswald meets with the orphan Martin and asks her to spy on Sofia on his behalf to prove that he is loyal to Oswald and not acting as her spy instead. Martin nods and shakes Oswald's hand to agree to do so.

On on the hill, Alfred tells Bruce the story of how he first met Thomas Wayne and that their friendship saved Alfred's life. He tries to assure Bruce that he can help him through this traumatic ordeal and Bruce says he simply doesn't want to talk about it. Bruce concepts a story about the rocks being missing and uses it as a way to take the keys and leave in Alfred's car.

Pyg arrives at Sofia's fundraising event masquerading as a chef and shows her the supply of meat pies that will be served to the guest. Sofia is none the wiser that the pies are full of homeless people. The the fundraiser begins, Oswald plays nice with Sofia and instructs Martin to go spy on Sofia. Jim sneaks into the fundraiser and is knocked out by Pyg before being dragged into a back room and locked inside. When Jim regains consciousness he finds that Harper is also in the room.

Oswald and Sofia are about to hash things out about their tiptoeing around one another but are distracted by Pyg and his hired henchmen shooting off weapons and commanding everyone to take a seat. Meanwhile, Harper informs Jim that no one ever searched her so she still has a knife concealed in her ankle holster which Jim uses in order to work on breaking out of the room.

Pyg puts on a big show and declares that all of Gotham's Elite that are present must consume the homeless people in the meat pies as a symbol of how everyone of them has earned their status by feeding on the poor of Gotham. When Sofia tries to demand answers on the whereabouts of the other orphans Pyg impales her hand with a sharp tool. Pyg threatens to kill Martin if the guests do not eat the pies. When one of the guests claims that it doesn't matter if an orphan dies if the alternative is being forced to eat the pies, Penguin yanks the tool out of Sofia's hand and kills the man with it. Pyg blames Penguin for engorging himself on the city with his Pax Penguina, and orders him and the others to eat the pies. Penguin begins to eat a pie and threatens the others into eating, saying he'll kill them all himself if they don't.

Jim finally manages to escape from the room and gets to the table just as Oswald is preparing to help Sofia eat form her pie, under Pyg's orders. A fight breaks out and Oswald tries to interfere with Jim fighting Pyg due to the threat it poses to Martin. Oswald is able to get away with Martin as the other guests flee and Jim tells Sofia to run and proceeds to fight Pyg on the table until he's finally able to get the upper hand and stab Pyg in the arm.

Oswald decides to abandon his Pax Penguina program and confronts Sofia about her paying off the mayor into getting Jim the Captain position. He tells Sofia that Jim cannot be Captain and she tells him to pick someone else to fill the position, claiming Jim means nothing to her. Pyg is sent to Arkham Asylum and Jim is once again hailed as a hero by the media.

Alfred returns to Wayne Manor and finds that Jim is throwing a party for all his young friends. Alfred orders everyone to leave but Bruce tells them all to stay. They decide to leave and meet up with Bruce later when Alfred threatens a young man that tries to get 'smart' with Alfred. Bruce insists that despite avenging his parents' death, nothing has changed and Alfred can't help him. He orders Alfred to just be his butler and not a surrogate father.

Jim resists Sofia and the two converse about their tumultuous entanglements, after which Sofia kisses him. Martin visits Oswald and shares how he saw them kissing and Oswald tearfully declares that Sofia will pay for her betrayal.

Gotham airs on Thursdays on FOX at 8/7c.

Gotham S04E08 "Stop Hitting Yourself" Recap

At the fight club, a play is put on before a fight. The narrative has Ed pretending to be Penguin and mocking his character while the audience boos to express their disdain for Penguin. This is part of a strategy to amp up Grundy and stir up fan adoration for him. Leslie warns Ed that baiting Penguin's attention is unwise unless he's ready to take him on. During the fight, Grundy is hit in the head and has flashes of memories of Tabitha kissing him and calling him Butch. It's unclear how much or how clearly his memories are returning to him. He resumes the fight and wins by ripping the arm off his opponent and beating him to death with it.

Jim is offered the position of Captain by Mayor Burke but retains his skepticism of the offer and Penguin's ongoing meddling. The Mayor warns him that one way or another Harvey will be replaced as Captain and if Jim doesn't accept then the person who does may be someone that isn't so skeptical of Penguin.

Oswald is informed of Ed mocking him at the fight club so he sends Barbara, Tabitha, and Selina to Narrows and bring Ed back alive in exchange for a sizable sum of money. Shortly after they leave, Oswald sends Bridgit to follow them and kill them if they don't return in time. When the trio arrives at the club they witness Ed's mocking play and are then shocked to see Butch alive and in this new form. Tabitha insists on trying to talk to him while Barbara and Selina get to work on kidnapping Ed.

Oswald meets a mute child named Martin at Sofia's orphanage that is being bullied by his peers. He also has some psychotic tendencies. Oswald, feeling a kinship to Martin, begins coaching him so he can make friends and destroy his enemies.

Butch encounters Barbara and Selina trying to kidnap Ed and a standoff ensues. Selina proposes that they go by the code of the Narrows. They will select a champion to fight against Grundy and whomever wins gets to take Ed. Tabitha is selected to fight Grundy and remains confident that Butch's love for her will ensure that he doesn't hurt her. Grundy's lack of memories mean he has no problems fighting her and begins to get the upper hand. When Tabitha knocks Butch in the head, he regains memories and is stunned into inaction. This allows Tabitha to knock him out and win the fight.

Jim attends a police ceremony intended to honor those fallen officers from the courthouse but is obliged to start the ceremony himself when Harvey fails to show up and perform his duties.

Bridget arrives at Narrows and is prepared to kill the group for failing to meet Oswald's deadline. Grundy is revealed to have a fear of fire. Lee incapacitates Bridgit by shooting her suit. Lee reveals to the crowd that Cherry informed on them all to Penguin, meaning everyone turns on her. She points the finger at the trio, outing them as working for Penguin. Barbara responds by shooting Cherry in the head. Barbara then announces they've quit working for Penguin and then the crowd no longer holds animosity against them. The trio leave the club without Ed.

Jim confronts Harvey for not showing up to the ceremony, as he's shown to be drinking and sulking in his office. Jim and Harvey have an intense argument, and Jim decides to accept the offer to be the new Captain of the GCPD.

Lee begins patching up Grundy's wounds and Ed informs her that she is now the new leader of the club and everyone has clearly embraced her as such. Though reluctant, she decides to take on the new role.

Jim visits Sofia and confronts her for setting off events that led to his becoming Captain. Jim is horrified at having had to stab his partner in the back so he ends his relationship with Sofia and tells her she should leave Gotham. She informs him that she won't be leaving, as she's intent on restoring the Falcone name to its former glory so Jim simply leaves.

Gotham airs on Thursdays on FOX at 8/7c.

Gotham S04E07 "A Day in the Narrows" Recap

The GCPD are sent 44 boxes of pig's heads. It's enough for every officer there except for one. The instructions given to the delivery men was that everyone was to receive a box except for Jim Gordon.

Bruce displays surprisingly aggressive, hostile behaviour while at an event with Alfred. He confesses to Alfred in private that he doesn't feel guilty for killing Ra's and now feels conflicted about his identity. Alfred wants him not to become consumed by anger.

Penguin is determined to collaborate with the GCPD in order to taken down Professor Pyg because he has been killing cops on Penguin's payroll. Jim is outraged by the notion of working with Penguin but Harvey has the final say in the matter and agrees to work with him. When two more officers go missing, GCPD and Penguin's men led by his enforcer Headhunter go together to the Narrows to follow a lead. Harvey orders the men to be aggressive in questioning the residents of the building, tactics Jim strongly objects to. Jim tries to legitimately question a woman about what she saw regarding the kidnapping of the officers but Headhunter forces her sickly husband out of the building and threatens to shoot him and more residents if she doesn't talk. It works and she shares what she saw, which sends the officers and Penguin's men the direction they were headed in. This leads to the discovery of the missing officers. One is dead and the other, Fisoli, is badly wounded. As Fisoli is taken away in an ambulance, he tells Jim he is on of the good ones.

At Bruce's fundraiser, he meets Grace Blomdahl, a former classmate of his. The two strike up a flirtation. They go off and meet some more teens. Bruce is reintroduced to Tommy Elliot, whom Bruce assaulted a while back for insulting his dead parents, and Brant. Brant is rude and arrogant towards Bruce, even insulting Alfred, so Bruce contemplates violently assaulting him but refrains from doing so. Tommy is apologetic, admitting his past wrongs and saying that Brant is a tool. The group decides to go party at a club that Brant claims to have a hookup at.

Selina attacks a biker's club but when she gets trapped she calls Tabitha for help. Tabitha attempts to convince Barbara to come but Barbara isn't interested in helping, saying it's a teachable moment for Selina and that she shouldn't have been caught.

The GCPD tracks down the third missing cop to an abandoned courthouse. Jim doesn't want Penguin's men to be the ones to storm the building but Harvey says it's a win-win since they'll be the ones to be injured if anything goes wrong with infiltrating the building. Pyg calls Jim and warns him to let the others go in and to not go in himself or else he'll die. Pyg also tells Jim he's "one of the good ones", making Jim realise that Pyg is Fisoli, the apparently injured cop.

At the nightclub, Bruce embarrasses Brant, who is no longer able to get in. Brant is rude to Bruce once again and Bruce reveals that he has purchased the nightclub and allows the group to come in with the exception of Brant, who has to leave in humiliation.

Jim tries to warn Harvey to call off the raid of the building and that Fisoli is Pyg. Jim is insistent that raiding will only be a trap but Harvey sides with Penguin and order Jim to stand down. Jim is forced to stay outside as armed men keep watch of him. Harvey and other officers raid the building and shoot whom they believe to be Pyg but it's actually Patel chained up in a disguise, while the apparent hostage was just a decoy dummy. They set off some rigged machine guns that begin firing and injure and kill many officers. Penguin tries to order more of his men to get inside but they refuse to go into the crossfire. Jim snatches one of their large weapons and heads inside where he shoots one of the automatic weapons and rescues those still alive inside, including Harvey.

Barbara change her mind and decides to help Tabitha rescue Selina. The trio are able to get away with a significant amount of money from the biker's club and agree to work together to commit more heists.

Jim is revered by the media while Penguin tries to put all the blame of the botched mission on Harvey. More of the officers now hold Jim in high regard once again. Harvey is distraught over how poorly the mission went and that he is now seen as the cop who shot another cop. Fisoli calls Jim once again and taunts Jim about the saga of what's to come and stresses how Jim is his muse.

Penguin is furious about how poorly his plans have gone and when an injured Headhunter accompanies him back to the club, Penguin kills him.

Gotham S04E06 "Hog Day Afternoon" Recap

Ed re-introduces himself to Thompkins at the fight club and she is cold towards his approach considering the part he played in sending Jim away so he couldn't support her when she miscarried their child. Ed also introduces her to the newly resurrected Butch/Solomon, explaining about his lack of memory of his former life as well as his super-strength.

A mystery-man wearing a pig's head as a mask has begun killing police officers that have been working for Oswald as collectors. Jim and Harvey begin investigating these crimes and determine that this killed is attempting to fight back against the city's corruption, albeit in a twisted way.

Oswald continues to work to figure out his relationship with Sofia. He feels closer to her but still doesn't trust her. Sofia sets a lunch with him but doesn't show up so Oswald orders Victor Zsasz to follow her and find out what she's been up to.

Thompkins patches up some of Grundy's injuries after he begins participating in the fight ring under Ed's plan to raise money to mend his mind. She tries to explain to Grundy that Ed doesn't really care about him but Grundy is unwavering in his belief that Ed is his best friend. Ed wants to hire Thompkins to be the one to fix his cognitive impairments but she refuses his offer. She is revealed to be operating a clinic with the money she makes working at the club.

Zsasz reports back to Oswald that Sofia had lunch with the mayor and then went to a hotel that's long since been unused. She also met with a building inspector at this building to approve of constructing a defense wall. Oswald suspects that she is working to build up a fortress so she can start up her own criminal empire in Gotham and orders Zsasz to get a shovel so they can pay her a deadly visit.

Jim and Harvey track down the next target of "Professor Pyg" but they accidentally set off a fail-safe that kills the officer. They end up captured and the pair are taunted. Jim escapes his restraints but not quickly enough to stop the killer from badly cutting Harvey's throat so Jim has to tend to Harvey instead of stopping Pyg from escaping.

Oswald confronts Sofia about her plans and she reveals that she has purchased the building and turned it into an orphanage. Oswald returns to his positive regard of her, and she offers to make him some food.

Jim tells Harvey in the hospital that he knows Harvey has been working for Oswald and taking payments from him and needs to stop.

Thompkins agrees to help Ed attempt to regain his cognitive functions, though she says she can't promise any results, but accepts the offer due to her clinic running out of medical supplies.

Finally, Professor Pyg is revealed to be working on larger, more insidious plans.

Gotham S04E05 "The Blade's Path" Recap

In a flashback, we see Butch's body being brought to be dumped in a swamp after having been in a coma for six months due to Barbara shooting him in the head. His body floats and drifts along the surface and toxic waste from Indian Hill is shown to have been dumped into the water and muck.

Jim is determined to stop Ra's, while Bruce is determined to kill Ra's at Blackgate Penitentiary in order to avenge Alex. Bruce has been working hard to decode some text on the knife and believes that the knife may be the only weapon that can kill Ra's which would explain why he wants it so much. Alfred tries to keep Bruce on course and remember his vow to not kill anyone, warning that killing someone will only send him on a darker path and Alfred shares his knowledge of this from personal experience. Bruce claims to agree but the pensive expression on his face suggests otherwise.

Alex has a funeral and there, Jim informs Alfred that extradition papers have been drawn to send Ra's back home and implores Alfred to keep an eye on Bruce and keep him away but Bruce has been listening in on the conversation.

Barbara visits Ra's and he has her put her palm up to the glass of his cell and their hands glow. It's unclear what has just transpired, as Ra's simply tells her she will see eventually what has happened.

Butch emerges from the Slaughter Swamp as Solomon Grundy, complete with new pale skin and hair. He attacks some campers nearby and steals some clothes before walking off with his new name and identity. He later encounters Ed and the two decide to team up, albeit reluctantly. Grundy knocks him out when he recognises Solomon and throws him over his shoulder to carry him off. Ed had just come out of a pharmacy where he had been trying to find something to fix his cognitive trauma from being frozen and thawed from ice. Grundy insists that Ed help him but Ed says he can't help him when he is currently unable to even help himself. When Grundy reveals that the has stolen a hot dog stand, Ed warms to the idea of teaming up.

Sofia returns to Oswald and tries to reason with him, leading to the two of them seemingly beginning to bond and get along, though there may be more scheming underlying Sofia's motives.

Bruce steals the knife and uses his equipment to break into Blackgate Penitentiary, determined to kill Ra's. Bruce is caught by some security guards but they do nothing to help him, as they are on the Ra's payroll. Alfred goes to find Jim when Bruce goes missing and the two head to Blackgate in search of him.

When Bruce wakes, he and Ra's are alone in an underground area in the penitentiary. Ra's reveals that he is cursed and returns the knife to Bruce. He wants Bruce to kill him. Meanwhile, Bruce and Alfred fight off the corrupt security guards and carry on in their search for Bruce.

Ed and Grundy are attacked by some friends of the men Grundy had attacked earlier but Grundy easily fights them off. However, his hand catches on fire in the commotion and Ed runs off to grab a bucket of water to extinguish it. Following this, Grundy assures Ed that he is smart since he knew how to put the fire out and Ed gets a jolt of confidence as a result.

Oswald becomes emotional and upset when Sofia invites him out for a meal and the dish served is identical to one of his mother's recipes. She visits him later at the club to apologise and the two talk about the pain in their upbringing and Sofia massages Oswald's ankle which is flaring up in pain due to the weather. She shares how she broke her ankle as a kid and while her father told her to ice it and toughen up, her mother said that warmth is actually what's needed.

Ra's shows Bruce his true form in the reflection of some water and claims he feels nothing but pain and agony. He warns that if he doesn't kill Ra's, Bruce will follow the path of the light and become a husband and father, perhaps even forget that Ra's existed, and then kill everyone Bruce loves. By goading Bruce, he is able to force him to react and kill Ra's with the blade. Thus begins Bruce's journey into darkness and Ra's rapidly decays into a corpse and fully dies just in time for Jim and Alfred to turn the corner and see. Jim covers the story, saying he doesn't know what he saw, and says the official story will be that men serving Ra's broke in and helped him escape. He assures a tormented Bruce that nothing that has happened has changed Bruce's character.

Ed convinces Grundy to join an underground wrestling/fighting ring. Ed hopes to raise money there that will help him become smart again. Before he can fight, the person in charge sends for the doctor to patch up Grundy's burnt arm. The fighting ring doctor is revealed to be Leslie Thompkins.

Gotham S04E04 "The Demon's Head" Recap

Bruce and Alfred bring the knife purchased from Penguin's auction to antiquist Niles Winthrop and his grandson Alex so they can dig up historical research on it but implore him to keep their custody of the knife secret. Bruce promises to come back the next morning to check on their progress. That night, Niles translates scripture from the knife that speaks of a legend of Ra's al Ghul who is said to be an immortal being with a destiny. Niles shares his findings with Alex and his suspicions that Bruce has stumbled into something far more complex and dangerous than he imagined. When someone knocks on the door, Niles tells Alex that no one should be there so he sends him into his office with the knife before answering the door. Ra's has come to claim the knife and kills Niles when he refuses to give up the location of the knife. Alex remains hidden with the knife and cries quietly at the loss of his grandfather.

The following day, the GCPD are investigating the scene when Bruce arrives and tells Jim about the knife. They have yet to locate Alex or the knife, which Ra's sends an animalistic man called "Anubis" to track down. He also tells Anubis he is free to kill the boy in the process.

Sofia visits Penguin and claims that she has no interest in her father's business and is only in Gotham to help with some charitable causes. Penguin remains firm in his suspicions of her, despite remaining oblivious about Ra's al Ghul's existence.

Jim visits Barbara to question her about the death of Niles and the disappearance of Alex. Bruce arrives to interrupt the line of questioning and asks about Ra's al Ghul but Barbara pretends to be ignorant of who that is. Jim is furious at Bruce and berates him outside for not telling him about Ra's. They eventually decide to work together and are able to track down Alex, who still has the knife. They are attacked by some of Ra's's other-worldly henchmen but are able to fight them off. Bruce and Alex escape together while Jim heads back to the GCPD. There he is visited by Ra's al Ghul who claims to be an academic official from Nanda Parbat. They do a bit of posturing towards each other since Jim is sizing up this new opponent and Ra's has a timid persona to play. Alfred arrives and attacks Ra's, who later slips out while Alfred angrily tells Jim about all that Ra's has done.

Penguin had only set up a meeting with Sofia so that word would get out into the city about her return to Gotham and lure out Falcone loyalists. He arrives with Zsasz when she is meeting with some of them and has Zsasz execute the men. He claims to now trust Sofia's word despite her explanation to him that his strategy was bullish and sloppy when he could've used her to bait those men to be loyal to him instead of just killing them and throwing away what they could've offered him.

Alex and Bruce are back at Niles' museum, which is where Alex had hid the knife but they are forced to hide once more when Ra's' men come back looking of them. Jim shows up and able to kill one while luring the other one away. Ra's arrives shortly afterward and demands the return of the knife while holding Alex at knifepoint. Bruce says the knife is too important and Ra's appears impressed by the statement before slitting Alex's throat. Ra's is arrested and Bruce is left devastated, blaming himself for Alex's death. Alfred and Jim assure him that Ra's is a psychopath.

Ed spends the bulk of the episode trying to come up with clever riddles to send a message to Oswald. This culminates in Ed showing up at the club to confront Oswald, who merely laughs at Ed and points out how Ed's number one fan was right about him losing his intelligence. Ed pleads to be let go without being refrozen, but when he admits he's no longer the Riddler then Oswald says he'll let Ed go because the better revenge is to let Ed live knowing that he's only Ed Nygma now, a regular man and a shell of the genius super villain he once was.

Sofia admits to Jim that she has a takeover plan in store for Gotham, while Ra's is implied to have allowed himself to be arrested as part of a larger plan as well.
