New York Comic Con: "American Gods" Cast & Crew Tease Season Two

After a successful and beloved first season, "American Gods" has brought a jam-packed panel to New York Comic Con in order to discuss the show's material and tease what's to come in season two. The panelists included author Neil Gaiman, Demore Barnes (Mr. Ibis), Omid Abtahi (Salim), Mousa Kraish (The Jinn), Bruce Langley (Technical Boy), Crispin Glover (Mr. World), Orlando Jones (Mr. Nancy), Yetide Badake (Bilquis), Pablo Schreiber (Mad Sweeney), Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), and Emily Browning (Laura Moon).

It takes little to no time at all to see how electric the chemistry is among the cast. With a character as over-the-top as Ricky Whittle at the helm of all con shenanigans, he makes a big impression from the start by running from the back of the room up to the stage. The other cast members take a more traditional route by walking from backstage as is customary.

Neil Gaiman is first to introduce teasers for season two. "Shadow Moon has discovered exactly who he is working for and now, season two is gonna begin just a few short hours later and everything is going to get both better and worse. The first place we are all headed is the House on the Rock and we actually, they closed down the real House on the Rock for us for several days and let us film there. Ricky and, I'm not gonna tell you which of the other people I'm up here with, but at least two of the other people got to ride on the largest carousel in the world which they never let you ride on."

"Not many people in the world have ridden that carousel, and I felt very privileged," says Whittle.

"If you're familiar with the book," continues Gaiman, "the most useful piece of information I can give you which is completely honest is we do not get to Lakeside in this season." Gaiman also teases that the show will get to a funeral home and that Laura and Mad Sweeney will go on a journey together to hot, exotic places.

"Good Omens" Brings Photo-booth Experience to New York Comic Con

With such a substantial amount of programming and exhibits to choose from at New York Comic Con, it's no wonder that the convention garners an increasingly high attendance rate with each passing year. Networks and studios will send films, television series, and any other content or merchandise to promote at the event. One such example of this is the "Good Omens" booth, set up for a fun, interactive experience to generate excitement among fans about the new series (as if a television series co-starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen, based on a book co-written by Neil Gaiman wasn't enticing enough).

When first you begin the experience, you wait for an elevator to take you to your destination. You enter and are greeted by a poshed-up elevator-man one would expect in an old-timey luxury hotel. The character is played and dressed to a tee, as he operates the buttons with gloved hands and informs those inside that we are to be judged on whether we've been good enough to make it to Heaven or Hell. Naturally, there's only destination and it's to go downward. But at least the elevator-man is kind enough to do a funny dance while we wait for the doors to open, to accompany the entirely necessary elevator-music.

Upon getting inside, those running the booth instruct us to go one at a time to stand on the artwork surrounded by candles so we can pose for photos. The first is designed so that we can choose a pose that will be in response to some light beaming down that's added through special software after the photo has been taken. The second pose each person takes is whatever they'd like it to be, independent of the premise of the first one.

"Good Omens" is an upcoming series based on the 1990 novel "Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Neil Gaiman is also responsible for writing the screenplay for the series. The cast is highly star-studded, including David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Anna Maxwell Martin, Jon Hamm, Josie Lawrence, Adria Arjona, Michael McKean, and Jack Whitehall. Tennant and Sheen portray Crowley (a demon) and Aziraphael (an angel) respectively, who serves as the representatives of Hell and Heaven on Earth. As they have grown accustomed to life on Earth, they will seek to prevent the coming of the antichrist and the consequently final battle between Heaven and Hell. The series is set to premiere on Amazon Prime in 2019, followed by a conventional airing on BBC Two in the United Kingdom.

Jon Hamm Joins the Amazon Series 'Good Omens' as the Archangel Gabriel

Jon Hamm Joins the Amazon Series Good Omens as the Archangel Gabriel

Good Omens will be released in over 200 countries exclusively for Prime Members in 2019

October 02, 2017 – Amazon and BBC Two today announced Emmy and Golden Globe award winning actor Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Baby Driver, Bridesmaids) will be joining the cast of Good Omens, in the role of the archangel Gabriel -  the primary messenger of God.  The six-part television adaptation of the best-selling novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett is currently in production and will be released by Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries in 2019, exclusively for Prime Members. It will be followed by a run on BBC Two in the UK.

The character of Gabriel has a fleeting role in the original novel but showrunner Neil Gaiman explains why he is being developed in the screenplay:

“Once we had finished writing Good Omens, back in the dawn of prehistory, Terry Pratchett and I started plotting a sequel. There would have been a lot of angels in the sequel. When Good Omens was first published and was snapped up for the first time by Hollywood, Terry and I took joy in introducing our angels into the plot of a movie that was never made. So when, almost thirty years later, I started writing Good Omens for TV, one thing I knew was that our angels would have to be in there.

The leader of these angels is Gabriel. He is everything that Aziraphale isn't: he's tall, good-looking, charismatic and impeccably dressed. We were fortunate that Jon Hamm was available, given that he is already all of these things without even having to act. We were even more fortunate that he's a fan of the books and a remarkable actor.”

Jon Hamm says: “I read Good Omens almost twenty years ago.  I thought it was one of the funniest, coolest books I'd ever read. It was also, obviously, unfilmable. Two months ago Neil sent me the scripts, and I knew I had to be in it.”

Good Omens was commissioned for Amazon Prime Video and for BBC Two by Patrick Holland, Controller, BBC Two; Shane Allen, Controller, BBC Comedy Commissioning and BBC commissioning editor Gregor Sharp. It is being produced by the comedy team at BBC Studios, the BBC’s commercial production arm, Narrativia and The Blank Corporation, in association with BBC Worldwide.

Good Omens will launch globally on Prime Video in over 200 countries and territories in 2019 including in the UK, where it will also air on BBC Two at a later date. BBC Worldwide distributes rights for Good Omens internationally, after the series premiere on Prime Video. The series will be brought to the screen by the highly acclaimed director/executive producerDouglas Mackinnon, whose credits include KnightfallDirk GentlyDoctor Who, Outlander and the standalone Victorian episode of Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, winner of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie last year.

FREMANTLEMEDIA NORTH AMERICA REACHES EXCLUSIVE, MULTI-YEAR FIRST LOOK DEAL WITH BEST-SELLING AUTHOR NEIL GAIMA

FREMANTLEMEDIA NORTH AMERICA REACHES EXCLUSIVE, MULTI-YEAR FIRST LOOK DEAL
WITH BEST-SELLING AUTHOR NEIL GAIMAN

Having recently wrapped production of the first season of the adaptation of Gaiman’s fantasy novel ‘American Gods’, FMNA and Gaiman expand their partnership to future television projects

BURBANK, CA, February 28, 2017  ̶  FremantleMedia North America (FMNA), continuing the expansion of its scripted television business, has entered into an exclusive, multi-year first look agreement with award-winning author Neil Gaiman.  FMNA and Gaiman first began their relationship when the two joined forces to adapt Gaiman’s American Gods. This new far-reaching agreement will provide opportunities for FMNA and Gaiman to adapt any of his uniquely wide ranging works – from novels to short stories, etc. – for television.  The deal also allows for adaptation of projects involving third party source material and intellectual properties. The partnership spans Gaiman’s involvement in all creative capacities, including as a writer and as a producer.

FMNA and Gaiman are already working together to identify a full slate of projects.  It’s expected that upcoming ventures will encompass both original content, as well as existing Gaiman properties, many of them bringing in acclaimed creators from additional fields, with Cat Mihos continuing to serve as the director of development for Gaiman’s The Blank Corporation.

Craig Cegielski, co-CEO, FremantleMedia North America, said “Neil Gaiman is one of the most distinctive writers of our time and we’ve been incredibly fortunate to be entrusted with his vision while adapting American Gods. Our experience together has proven more than collaborative – it’s a shared ambition to create, develop and produce singular, bespoke content. We couldn’t be happier to diversify and expand our relationship to future projects.”

Commented Neil Gaiman, "Working with my friends at FremantleMedia on shepherding American Gods to the screen has been exciting and delightful way to spend the last three years. I've learned to trust them, and to harness their talents and enthusiasm, as they've learned to harness mine. They don't mind that I love creating a ridiculously wide variety of things, and I am glad that even the strangest projects of mine will have a home with them. American Gods is TV nobody has seen before and I can't wait to announce the specifics behind what we have coming up next."

Gaiman and FMNA recently wrapped production on the first season of their adaptation of Gaiman’s award-winning novel, American Gods. The series that brought the two together is set to premiere on STARZ on Sunday, April 30th in the U.S., and Amazon Prime Video internationally on Monday, May 1st.

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green Serve as Showrunners

Beverly Hills, Calif. (January 28, 2016) – Starz and FremantleMedia North America (FMNA) announced today that Ricky Whittle (“The 100,” “Austenland”) has been cast as Shadow Moon in the upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel, American Gods. The series will begin shooting in April.

Neil Gaiman said, “I'm thrilled that Ricky has been cast as Shadow. His auditions were remarkable. The process of taking a world out of the pages of a book, and putting it onto the screen has begun. American Gods is, at its heart, a book about immigrants, and it seems perfectly appropriate that Shadow will, like so much else, be Coming to America. I'm delighted Ricky will get to embody Shadow. Now the fun starts.”

Commented Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, “We searched every continent and country and all the islands in between for our Shadow Moon, and we are lucky to have found Ricky.  Fans of the novel will find he has every bit of the heart of the character they fell in love with.”

A native of Oldham, Greater Manchester England, Whittle’s credits include “The 100,” “Austenland,” “Hollyoaks,”“Mistresses,” “NCIS” and “Holby City.” Whittle is the son of former Royal Air Force serviceman Harry Whittle and grew up travelling around the world.  A keen sportsman, Whittle represented England and the United Kingdom at youth level in football and rugby.

American Gods been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

“American Gods” is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”) are writers and showrunners. David Slade (“Hannibal,” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”) is directing the pilot and additional episodes. FMNA’s Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk are executive producing the series along with Fuller, Green, Slade and Neil Gaiman. Senior Vice President of Original Programming Ken Segna is the Starz executive in charge of “American Gods.” Starz retains all network pay TV and SVOD rights to the project. FremantleMedia is distributing the series worldwide.

Ricky Whittle is represented by TalentWorks, Creative Artists Management in the UK, and Untitled Entertainment.

STARZ Developing “AMERICAN GODS” From FREMANTLEMEDIA NORTH AMERICA

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green to serve as showrunners on the new scripted drama series

Beverly Hills, Calif. (July 1, 2014) – Starz has announced a script to series development of FremantleMedia North America’s (FMNA) adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed urban fantasy novel “American Gods.”  The pilot script will be penned by Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”), who will also showrun the series. They will executive produce along with Gaiman. FremantleMedia North America will produce the series.

Starz Managing Director Carmi Zlotnik said, “‘American Gods’ is a project that deserves to be made.  With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil, we believe we can create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans and viewers.”

Commented Neil Gaiman, "When you create something like ‘American Gods,’ which attracts fans and obsessives and people who tattoo quotes from it on themselves or each other, and who all, tattooed or not, just care about it deeply, it's really important to pick your team carefully: you don't want to let the fans down, or the people who care and have been casting it online since the dawn of recorded history. What I love most about the team who I trust to take it out to the world, is that they are the same kind of fanatics that ’American Gods’ has attracted since the start. I haven't actually checked Bryan Fuller or Michael Green for quote tattoos, but I would not be surprised if they have them. The people at Fremantle are the kinds of people who have copies of ‘American Gods in the bottom of their backpacks after going around the world, and who press them on their friends. And the team at Starz have been quite certain that they wanted to give Shadow, Wednesday and Laura a home since they first heard that the book was out there.I can't wait to see what they do to bring the story to the widest possible audience able to cope with it."

Thom Beers, CEO, FremantleMedia North America said, “’Neil Gaiman’s ‘American Gods’ is pure genius and we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this classic to life on screen. Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk have put together a dream team with Fuller and Green joining Gaiman on this amazing journey. Coupled with Starz’ shared passion for this project, we’re confident this combination will raise the bar for drama.”

Commented Bryan Fuller, "Neil Gaiman has created the holiest of holy toy boxes with ‘American Gods’ and filled it with all manner of magical thing, born of new gods and old. Michael Green and I are thrilled to crack this toy box wide open and unleash the fantastical titans of heaven and earth and Neil's vividly prolific imagination."

The 2001 novel has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel.  The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.  Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

FremantleMedia North America’s Thom Beers, Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk will executive produce the series along with Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman. Vice President of Original Programming Ken Segna will be the Starz executive in charge of “American Gods.” Starz will retain all network pay TV and SVOD rights to the project. FremantleMedia will distribute the series worldwide.

“American Gods” is part of the rich scripted slate that has been growing at FremantleMedia North America since CEO Thom Beers appointed Craig Cegielski as Executive Vice President, Scripted Programming, and Stefanie Berk, Senior Vice President, Scripted Programming in June 2013.  The company is currently in production on their cable scripted series, “The Returned.”
