"Dolittle" Review

High-budget studio films are a massive undertaking, and today's sensationalist media reporting is such that people often like to take pleasure in the failure of any blockbuster that doesn't smash at the box office. But what happens when the latest box office flop is helmed by a highly beloved Hollywood A-lister.

Robert Downey Jr. has been making it very clear on the Dolittle press tour that he wanted to make a film that the youngest kids that follow him will be able to see. Though some parents are irresponsible enough to bring their shrieking children to a PG-13 Marvel film, other have enough sense to know that doing so simply isn't appropriate. Dolittle was a passion project to give the kids something that would be fun, full of wonder, and leave them with some good messages to take away by the time the credits roll. So what went wrong?

By all accounts, Dolittle should have been a hit. On paper, all the boxes are checked. A well-established series (the "Dolittle" books and previous film adaptations), a cast full of A-list names, and all the money needed to build a whole new world to get swept on an adventure in. Trouble first began brewing when rumours began to rise on Reddit regarding problems with production. There was talk of reshoots, actors not knowing what animals they were supposed to be pretending to act opposite, directors being replaced. There's no way of truly knowing what happened on set. It may have been as bad as the rumours claimed just as it may have been fine by typical movie-making standards, or anywhere in-between.

One of the main problems with the finished product of "Dolittle" is how clumsy the writing and humour is. There's an overabundance of the lowest type of humour, particularly in regards to bodily functions. Those are the types of jokes that only five-year-olds would laugh at. The climax of the film is Doctor Dolittle doing a colonoscopy on a dragon and after unclogging it, the dragon farts (you can see this moment in the film's trailer).

On the other hand, there are too many sporadically thrown-in modern references for pop culture and slang. An octopus says "snitches get stitches." Ants re-enact dialogue from The Godfather. Dolittle lacks a clear identity and or intention in what style it wants to be. The anachronistic references could have worked if it had been fully committed to, and embraced for all the style it can add to the film, as opposed to distracting from the more emotional and dramatic stakes of the story. The humour is so poor, despite having so many talented names in the cast, that it's likely down to a combination of poor writing and choppy editing.

With films like Pirates of the Caribbean (the first one or two) and Maleficent being successful adventure and fantasy stories that work well across age demographics, Dolittle had the right pieces to follow in their footsteps. It's not entirely clear what the main source of the misfires is. But if there is anything the film does right, it's the more heartfelt messages that the kids watching are supposed to take away from the story. Dolittle's adventure stems from a need to save the sick Queen or else the deed to their land will get sold off. Dolittle would be out of a home and a job, while all his animal companions living in the sanctuary would be thrust out into the wild right in the middle of hunting season. Additionally, the young boy Tommy who aspires to be Dolittle's apprentice has some nice subtext in his character arc. While Tommy comes from a family of hunters, he has a more empathetic attitude towards animals. When he comes wearing a fancy scarf gifted to him by the Princess, his father immediately chides him for his attire. When you see Tommy saddened at overhearing his father questioning why his son isn't more like the rest of the family (hunters), you can't help but note that children watching who similarly come from harsh families that don't understand them can feel hope that they too can find a home, adventure, and supportive friends somewhere out in the world.

Though Dolittle has been poorly received by adults, it still has enough going for it to appeal to small children. If you are a parent, older sibling, relative, etc. it could be worth adding to your child's collection.

"Stuber" Review

"Stuber" is a refreshing addition to this year's roster of action films. When Vic, portrayed by Dave Bautista, gets eye surgery he calls an Uber to chauffeur him around as he pursues leads on a case he has a personal investment in solving. Stu, portrayed by Kumail Nanjiani, is that Uber driver. To say that hi-jinks ensue would be an understatement.

Nanjiani has already established himself in both stand-up comedy and comedic acting, and Bautista's background is full of action, this dynamic on-screen works very well. They are given the opportunity both as actors and characters to bring the other into their respective worlds. They're genuinely funny with one another and effectively display that they are capable of more than what they were previously known for.

Regardless of the modest budget, the film executes action well. This appears to be due in large part to a strong set of stunt actors and coordination, as well as the enthusiasm of the lead actors in these particular sequences. The comedy is also well done, and it's made all the better by the genuine chemistry between Nanjiani and Bautista who very clearly convey their enjoyment in getting to work with one another. The comedic writing embraces plenty of self-awareness and meta humour regarding the action genre and the tropes that exist within that genre. The old-fashioned approach to male-led action films is often centered around muscle-bound characters with no convincing emotional depth or interesting character arcs. "Stuber" has more depth than you might expect it to. It offers an entirely respectable amount of character development in the emotional journey for both Stu and Vic. It's a breath of fresh air that is just what the genre needs.

"Men in Black: International" Review

The first Men in Black film was released twenty-two years ago, all the way back in 1997. It's important to remember that these films were built on a foundation of serving both action and comedy to the audience. Given the combined premise of spies and sci-fi, there was always an emphasis on a mysterious case to solve a la Sherlock Holmes, action and cool tech a la James Bond, and of course an abundance of alien creatures as another pillar of the world-building.

Comedy is often a misunderstood genre and art form. It can be intermingled with more serious dramatic content or any number of genres, and the extent to which it's used can vary. The presence of jokes or levity doesn't have to undermine the deeper content for characters and the larger story, if done right. "Men in Black: International" shapes much of its comedy around Chris Hemsworth and Kumail Nanjiani. Chris has been making more and more of a shift towards comedic material as he's gained prominence and the freedom to choose more of his roles.

Kumail's career has been deeply rooted in comedy, as he's even done stand-up in addition to acting, so director F. Gary Grey made the wise choice of giving Kumail room to improvise. Kumail's character Lawny is also created with the help of motion capture technology. What "Men in Black: International" displays is the spirit of enthusiasm from the crew responsible for designing and rendering creatures as well as designing the new tech pieces used by the agents. IT's entirely evident ow much fun these people had imagining and creating these parts of the film, as the premise offers a far less filtered landscape of creativity.

"Men in Black: International" is not a reboot, but a continuation of the original film series that expands the scope of the previously established world. The original trilogy introduced a fascinating new concept to viewers but the focus stayed predominantly confined to two lead characters in one city. Who wouldn't be curious about the broader scope of the organisation? How far does it reach? How many alien races does it interact with? What would series like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars have been if they hadn't taken thetime to build the world outside of one location or one core group of characters. Why should Men in Black be punished for veering off a bit more in that direction?

As is often the case with comedy, any subtle nuances or opportunities to read deeper into the material of "Men in Black: International" appear to have been largely overlooked. There's a commonality between these two leads, of loneliness and being lost. Should there be any further sequels in this franchise, this is something that the writers should explore further. Aliens have always existed as a storytelling tool to embody Fear of the Other and since spies have to live and work in a state that's isolated from the larger society, delving into that commonality between the agents and aliens seems like another interesting area to incorporate.

Like many, I first got into the Men in Black series as a child. Any time you introduce sci-fi to a young audience it can spark imagination, open minds, and inspire them to ask questions about the universe. When you see these amazing creatures and set pieces, these are the things that have been conceived of by adults who likely feel in love with imaginative art while young. "Men in Black: International" is a fun expansion to the franchise, while leaving a lot of room to expand even more in the future. There's a lot more that can be done with these new characters, and they should be utilized even further, especially when in regards to an actress as prolific as Emma Thompson. Overall, it's a fun film to watch, and works well for those thinking of bringing young kids and sparking their imagination.

"Men in Black: International" is playing in cinemas worldwide.
