There are few movies that grab your heart and hold onto them, for me, one of my favorites has always been Evil Dead, and from the beginning Knights of Badassdom pays homage to that campy silliness infused with horror. It’s been over two years since the San Diego Comic Con panel, and press room took nerds by storm, and finally Knights of Badassdom comes home, and it is a welcome treat.

Knights of Badassdom stars Ryan Kwanten as wannabe Metal Rock God Joe, who gets dumped but his high school sweetheart, Beth, (Margarita Levieva) for not aspiring to more than being a part-time mechanic. His Live Action Role Play (LARP) obsessed roommates  Eric (Steve Zahn) and Hung (Peter Dinklage)try to get his mind off his woes and have him over indulge in all the things that Beth hated namely whiskey and righteous bong rips.

Joe awakens, dressed in armor and in the midst of a full on LARP event. Although his first instinct is to get the heck out of dodge after much cajoling and a smile from the beautiful and formidable Gwen (Summer Glau) Joe gives the event a chance and joins his friends and their team which includes former D&D rival and Gamemaster  Ronnie (Jimmi Simpson), weaselly Lando (Danny Pudi) and Gwen’s brute cousin who’s never not in game mode and therefore banded from Medieval Times Gunther (Brett Gipson).

When a simple “spells” goes horribly array and Eric accidently summons a real life succubus in the form of Beth, the fun is leached from the games as the hungry she-demons beings picking off LARPers one by one.  It’s up to Joe and the others to send the succubitch back to the hell that she came from.

Knights of Badassdom takes a very meta-horror approach to its outlandish story, and it works to its advantage. While it does poke fun at the medieval-themed activity, from speeches to locations, its clearly done out of love. There is obviously a lot of respect for the LARPers and the community as a whole.

Luckily for the outlandish storyline, the fantastic cast is fully committed both in-character and in-in-character. Some of the best lines come courtesy of a Dinklage and his chemically off balanced Hung. In a lesser actor’s mouth some of his absurd word play would have come off as odd or off putting, but Dinklage has a way of spinning just about anything into gold. Likewise, Kwanten comes off as loveable, and the sort of every guy, that helps the non LARPing audience member feel a connection. Glau’s Gwen embraces her foam padded ass kicking, but of all the characters hers feels the most forced. Real world LARPers were used as extras, and their passion has left fingerprints all over this film.

Still with epic fake battles, and a pretty sweet monster rampage, Knights of Badassdom is as interesting as it is visually pleasing. There are plenty of decent laughs, fun kills, and a pretty intense third act. For low budget comedy-horror flicks this is certainly one of the better ones.

Bottom line: Knights of Badassdom spoke to my nerdy heart and I liked what it had to say.

One the Blue ray there are interviews with Peter Dinklage, Steve Zahn, Ryan Kwanten, director Joe Lynch and the lovely Summer Glau. There is also a Behind the Scenes featurette, but best of all there is the San Diego Comic Con panel in all it's glory.

Huzzah! The moment you've all been waiting for, okay maybe it's just me but still. The awesome LARPing film Knights of Badassdom, has finally released a poster which comes to us from IGN. The film stars Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau, Steve Zahn and Ryan Kwanten. If its half as fun as it looks, its gonna be a blast!

Here is the official synopsis: “Knights of Badassdom follows three best friends (Peter Dinklage, Steve Zahn and Ryan Kwanten) and dedicated LARPers (Live Action Role Players) as they take to the woods to reenact a dungeons and dragons-like scenario fresh out of the mythical Middle Ages. Hear ye, hear ye, Knights of Badassdom is finally coming. Many have waited for Joe Lynch’s LARP comedy, and all I can really say it is finally upon us. Check out Entertainment One’s announcement below!

Lynch wrapped production on the flick back in 2010, and what looked to be a cheese fest of horror and comedy wowed fans at San Diego Comic Con 2011. We were on hand to see some of the awesomeness of that press conference, which you can read here.

The movie finds Joe (Ryan Kwanten) dealing with a pretty heavy break-up with his girlfriend, Beth (Margarita Levieva). His concerned roommates, Eric and Hung (Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage), kidnap him to their LARP (Live Action Role Playing) gathering, complete with foam weaponry on a mock battlefield. “Sorcerer” Eric inadvertently summons a deadly succubus that takes Beth’s seductive form, and bloody reality crashes down upon their fantasy world, forcing the make believe warriors to become full fledge heroes.

Geekboys and fangirls should go nuts for pretty much every part of this movie. It pokes fun as much as it pays homage to fandom and geekery. And the casting is nothing to scoff at either. It’s absolute perfection. Besides Ryan Kwaten, Steve Zahn and Peter Dinklage, Summer Gladu, Joshua Malina, Danny Pudi, Margarita Levieva, W. Earl Brown and Jimmi Simpson, also star. And really how can you go wrong, did I mention Peter Dinklage? He's pure gold as far as I'm concerned.

Knights of Badassdom hits theaters on January 21, with a VOD release shortly after that on February 11.

The Two-Hour Special Musical Event Features Santa Barbara’s Finest Singing and Dancing Along with Special Guest Stars Ally Sheedy, Tony Award Winner Barry Bostwick, Anthony Rapp, Brooke Lyons and Jimmi Simpson.

On Sunday, December 15, USA Network’s hit series PSYCH presents a spectacular two-hour musical special, PSYCH THE MUSICAL. Fans have been waiting years for this musical extravaganza that will have everyone’s favorite faux psychic, his best friend and the Santa Barbara Police Department’s finest all kicking up their heels and singing 14 original songs.

In the special, Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) dive into a world that's equal parts mystery and melody.  The duo must track down playwright and mad man, Z (guest star Anthony Rapp, “Rent”), who six years earlier was deemed criminally insane after trapping a critic in the theater and burning it to the ground.  With little to go on, they are forced to consult with the one person Z confided in while institutionalized -- a dangerous and familiar villain from Shawn's past.  Their informant uses songs and cryptic clues to reveal Z’s next steps. 


PSYCH creator/executive producer Steve Franks wrote and directed PSYCH THE MUSICAL, and along with music composer Adam Cohen, co-wrote the 14 original songs and reprises.  The music and lyrics were recorded in part on the iconic Sinatra stage at Capital Records in Los Angeles. In addition to Rapp, guest stars include Ally Sheedy (“The Breakfast Club”) who returns as the infamous Mr. Yang, Tony Award Winner Barry Bostwick (“Cougar Town”), Brooke Lyons (“2 Broke Girls”) and Jimmi Simpson (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) plus Kurt Fuller (“Midnight in Paris”) who recurs as Woody the coroner.

I watched Prison Break, I adored most of the four seasons it was on. Michael Scofield was a genius, but this wasn’t Prison Break, which let’s be honest that show more than ran its course and had become all too predictable, and the premise of Breakout Kings sounded all too close. So what’s a girl with an already overfully viewing schedule to do? Wait for the DVDs. Season one has finally arrived on DVD.

A rag tag group of criminals are brought together to catch other criminals and work off their sentences. Hmmm, I believe I’ve heard of this premise before. It’s very White Collar, but on a large scale, and just as good.

And if you love the sneaky, backstabbing, one handed T-Bag from Prison Break, well, Robert Knepper's Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell shows up in episode three. So Breakout Kings is very much in the Prison Break world. I’m not huge into crime drama’s but this one is definitely worth my time. The cast is very fluid, they have a great chemistry, and the storylines are very intriguing and smartly written.

Breakout Kings Season 1 is loaded with exclusive special features including deleted and extended scenes and several must see featurettes including  Good Cons, Bad Cons,Bullpin Sessions, and spotlight on Prison Break cross-over character T:Bag Dealt a Bad Hand. In fact, the T-Bag featurette may be the best one on there, or I may just have a softspot for the crazy slimeball.
