Dirk Manning & Friends Serve "Love Stories (To Die For)" Spanning Multiple Genres

Author Dirk Manning has compiled a series of stories seemingly unrelated save for one common theme: love. Those with less familiarity with the horror genre can still find something to appreciate in this compilation, so long as they are open to content with darker undertones. The stories span a wide array of genres, including sci-fi, supernatural, and zombies.

Each of Manning's stories effectively build up tension till the pressure bursts in the climax and readers are left to process the sombre conclusion before proceeding onto the next one. The variety in artists that have done the illustrations further enhances the scope of Manning's versatility as a writer. Though the stories can all tie into the horror genre to varying extents, it is a more intelligent approach than the stereotypes associated with the genre.

One disclaimer worth giving is that the "An Inability To Cope" story contains graphic illustrations and content pertaining to suicide. Those with a particular sensitivity to this issue may be better off skipping this story. All of the stories are much better suited to an adult audience, not only due to the more violent illustrations but the tone and plots also bear a weight unfit for a too-young audience without a parental pre-read approval given first.

But if you find yourself in the mood for some dark and twisted stories with tragic love components woven in, don't miss out on Dirk Manning & Friends' "Love Stories (To Die For)"!

ARCHAIA GEARS UP FOR ‘RUST VOL. 2: SECRETS OF THE CELL’

ARCHAIA GEARS UP FOR ‘RUST VOL. 2: SECRETS OF THE CELL’
Sequel to the all-ages hit ‘Rust Vol. 1: Visitor in the Field’ rockets to new heights

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 26, 2012) – With a feature film in the works at 20th Century Fox, a free interactive app on the Apple iPad, and now news that it has won a 2011 Book of the Year Award from ForeWord Reviews, things continue to look good for Royden Lepp’s graphic novel, Rust Vol. 1: Visitor in the Field, an all-ages book published by Archaia Entertainment about a mysterious boy with a jet pack. So it is with much excitement that Archaia is happy to announce that the next installment, Rust Vol. 2: Secrets of the Cell, is zooming into book stores and comic shops this Fall!

Rust transports readers to a struggling farm in an alternate history where the fatherless Taylor family comes to terms with the aftermath of a destructive war. When Jet Jones, a mysterious boy wearing a jet pack, crashes into their barn with a hulking, antique robot soldier from “Dad’s War” at his heels, life at the Taylor farm is forever changed. Jet eventually proves to be a reliable farmhand, working like a well-oiled machine while giving up very few answers about his mysterious origin.

In Rust Vol 2: Secrets of the Cell, the story continues as the oldest son, Roman Taylor, eager for reprieve from the stress of running the farm, becomes preoccupied with gaining a new workforce in the form of reprogrammed war robots. Distracted by his work and his childhood friend, Jesse, Roman doesn’t see the effect Jet is having on the rest of the family, particularly his younger brother, Oswald. Everything falls apart as the Taylors discover they aren’t prepared for what it may cost them to learn the “secrets of the cell.”

Rust is currently being developed as a feature film at 20th Century Fox with Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class) attached to produce and Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) attached to write. A digital iOS app, Royden Lepp’s Rust, is available now for free download on the iPad, featuring behind-the-scenes content and exclusive production materials. This month, Rust Vol. 1: Visitor in the Field took Silver in the Graphic Novels and Comics category in ForeWord Reviews’ 2011 Book of the Year Awards.

“I was totally overwhelmed by the response to Rust this year. I’m so excited that people have picked up this story and invested themselves in these characters,” said Lepp. “I’ve been working on Secrets of the Cell like crazy trying to make sure it’s the best follow-up possible to Visitor in the Field. We’re going to learn a bit more about Jet and the war and we’re going to meet a new character who’s incredibly important.”

“Royden really ups the ante in Secrets of the Cell, answering some of the burning questions readers had at the end of Visitor and raising a bunch more,” said Associate Editor Rebecca Taylor. “The world of Rust gets richer with each volume, and the characters spill even more of their hearts onto the page for readers to see. Secrets is a gut-wrenching and action-packed installment that will leave readers both satisfied and eager for the final two volumes in the series!”

Rust Vol. 2: Secrets of the Cell
(hardcover, sepia-toned, 200 pages, $24.95, 6” x 9”, ISBN 978-1-936393-58-9) will include the short story “Oswald’s Letter” that was featured in Archaia’s 2012 Free Comic Book Day hardcover, and it will bear a striking, blue, cloth cover and sepia-toned interiors. It is scheduled for release this Fall and is available for pre-order now through comic book shops (Diamond Order Code JUN12 0795) and wherever books are sold, including Amazon.com.

Return of the Dapper Men: Special Edition

For Immediate Release

ARCHAIA ANNOUNCES ‘RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN: SPECIAL EDITION’
New printing of the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel will contain new extras, stories, and never-before-seen artwork

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 14, 2012) – On the heels of the news that the second printing has sold out at the distributor level, Archaia Entertainment announced today its plans to publish the Return of the Dapper Men: Special Edition, a brand-new printing of the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel that will contain new extras, stories, and never-before-seen artwork.

Return of the Dapper Men is an enchanting, all-ages, original graphic novel created by writer Jim McCann (Mind the Gap) and illustrator Janet K. Lee (The Wonderland Alphabet) about a faraway land where time has stopped and grown-ups don’t exist—just children who don’t age and machines that have come to life. All that is disrupted when 314 dapper-looking gentlemen rain down on the land, intent on starting time up again and causing a ripple effect that affects everyone’s lives. Featuring a Foreword written by TV personality and fashion consultant Tim Gunn, the graphic novel received critical acclaim for its storytelling and distinct art style—each page by Lee is, in itself, a work of art, an elaborate decoupage glued onto a wooden board and coated with protective varnish. The book earned many accolades and was awarded the ultimate honor when it won the 2011 Eisner Award for Best New Graphic Album. Return of the Dapper Men: Special Edition will feature a new-look cover with the official Eisner Award seal, and will contain the exclusive reprintings of the two Dapper Men short stories that appeared in Archaia’s Free Comic Book Day publications in 2011 and 2012, as well as never-before-seen artwork from Lee. The book will serve as the perfect run-up to the forthcoming sequel, Time of the Dapper Men (2013).

“For the first time, fans can get ALL of the stories from the Dapper universe so far in one volume—not only can they read the original story, they can also enjoy two tales that were only available previously for Free Comic Book Day,” said Lee. “In addition, we’re excited to include never-before-published Dapper artwork and behind-the-scenes concept art. The Return of the Dapper Men: Special Edition is a ‘special’ way to get ready for the next volume, Time of the Dapper Men, which is coming in 2013!”

“When we knew we had to go back to press on Return of the Dapper Men for a third time, we thought, why not make it extra special? New fans will still be able to appreciate the Dapper Men universe, while existing ones can have a new experience with never-before-seen material,” said Archaia Editor-in-Chief Stephen Christy.

Return of the Dapper Men: Special Edition (hardcover, full color, 128 pages, $29.95, 9.5” x 11”, ISBN 978-1-936393-91-6) is scheduled for release in August 2012 and is available for pre-order now through comic book shops (Diamond Order Code JUN12 0796) and wherever books are sold. Limited-edition copies autographed by McCann and Lee will be available at the Archaia booth (#2635) at San Diego Comic-Con, July 12-15, 2012, while supplies last. A leather-bound version of the previous edition is available now for order exclusively through comic book shops and the Archaia webstore.

Pressman Films optioned Werewolf Graphic Novel "Feeding Ground" for the Big Screen

EDWARD R. PRESSMAN TO PRODUCE FEATURE FILM ADAPTATION OF ARCHAIA ENTERTAINMENT’S CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED HORROR GRAPHIC NOVEL ‘FEEDING GROUND’

ALFONSO GOMEZ-REJON (‘AMERICAN HORROR STORY’) TO DIRECT AND CARLOS COTO (‘24’) TO WRITE IMMIGRATION PARABLE SET ON THE U.S./MEXICO BORDER

New York, NY (May 10, 2012) – Edward R. Pressman, producer of such classic films as Wall Street, American Psycho, The Crow, Bad Lieutenant, and Das Boot, announced today that he has optioned the feature film rights for Archaia Entertainment’s acclaimed graphic novel Feeding Ground. Created by Swifty Lang, Michael Lapinski, and Chris Mangun, Feeding Ground was the first full-length graphic novel to be published in hardcover simultaneously in English and Spanish. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is set to direct and screenwriter Carlos Coto will adapt for the screen.

Feeding Ground tells the story of a “coyote,” a trafficker of illegal immigrants, forced to smuggle his family into America by crossing the most forbidding part of the Arizona/Mexico border, a searing noman’s- land known as “The Devil's Highway.” Along the way, he and his family clash with U.S. Border Patrol agents, only to realize that the entire party is being hunted by the real monsters that roam the countryside—werewolves.
“Feeding Ground is an intense and terrifying thriller with a subtle but pointed commentary on immigration in modern America,” said Pressman. “The graphic novel is so cinematic in nature—as soon as I read it, I knew we could make a film that would resonate with a wide audience. Alfonso and Carlos are the perfect talents to bring this vision to the big screen.”

Born and raised in Laredo, Texas on the US/Mexico border, Alfonso began his career as personal assistant to Martin Scorsese, Nora Ephron, Robert De Niro and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu. He became a sought-after 2nd Unit director (Babel, State of Play, The Eagle, Eat Pray Love, Argo) before directing critically acclaimed episodes of Glee (“Asian F”) and American Horror Story (“Birth”), as well as numerous national commercials. He also conceived and wrote Chanel’s worldwide “Bleu de Chanel” campaign directed by Scorsese. Carlos Coto is currently a writer and co-executive producer of Nikita. He has previously written and produced for 24, Heroes, Journeyman, The Dead Zone, NCIS, and was a consultant on the Emmy-winning HBO film, For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story.

Pressman is currently in development of a reinvention of the 1994 hit film The Crow to be written by Jesse Wigutow (The Osterman Weekend) and directed by Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) with Relativity, a reinvention of the iconic action film Bloodsport written by Robert Kamen (Taken) and to be directed by Phillip Noyce (Salt), and The Monkey Wrench Gang to be written and directed by Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman (Catfish, Paranormal Activity 3). The latest feature from Pressman, The Moth Diaries, written and directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho) was recently released by IFC Films and is available in theaters and through VOD.

Pressman Film COO Jon Katz and Archaia’s Stephen Christy and PJ Bickett will serve as Executive Producers along with Jason Carpenter, a former Pressman staffer, who brought the property to Pressman. Stephen Cavaliero is a Co-Producer.

Katz negotiated the deals on behalf of Pressman Film. CAA and Aaron Baumel of Stone, Meyer, Genow, Smelkinson & Binder LLP represented Archaia. CAA and Corinne Farley of Morris, Yorn, Barnes, Levine, Krintzman, Rubenstein & Kohner represented Coto. WME and Christine S. Cuddy of Kleinberg, Lange, Cuddy & Klein LLP represented Gomez-Rejon.

Chad Michael Murray: Actor & Graphic Novelist

Leilei & Chad Michael Murray
I had the pleasure of meeting one of my favorite actors from one of my favorite tv shows, "One Tree Hill" at Comic Con this year on Friday July 22, 2011. My daughter and I would watch marathon after marathon of OTH  when she was younger, and is one of my fondest memories I have of her while she was growing up. That's also the same thing I told Chad when he signed a poster and took a photo with me. What I didn't expect to see was him signing copies of 'Everlast, Phoenix: A Short Story' his first graphic novel at the Archaia booth, and I of course had to have a copy to read what it was all about. I know he is an awesome actor, but can he write? To answer that question is an understatement. His writing style is very descriptive and a bit dark, but that's exactly what he was going for. He puts the reader in the story as if they were actually there, living it along with the strong, compassionate character that Derek Everlast is. The story takes place pre-apocalyptic and we follow him throughout his destined life choosing people, good people to guide them to a place of renewal called Haven. During these explorations "he must deliver his last charge safely to Haven before the End Of Days," as Chad puts it. Sounds pretty dramatic and adventuresome to me.

"The Chad" writer of graphic novel 'Everlast'
Hmmmm, is this why Chad has been out of the lime light for about seven years since I last saw him on OTH? I suppose so because it definitely shows in his writing. He calls it "a seven year labor of love." The work is beautifully done from the creation and writing to the illustrations, which were done by JK Woodward. He was very nice and friendly towards me as he signed the poster for me as well as for my cousin Jasmine. I didn't see the 'Everlast' t-shirts the first time around so I purchased one when I got in line for the second time and he signed that as well. I told him he didn't have to sign the shirt because it would wash off after I wore it. That right there put a smile on his face when I told him that, and  he signed it anyway. I did wear his shirt the very next day to show him my support. And when I came back to the Archaia booth the next day for 'The Immortals' raffle drawing and signing, Chad actually called out my name. Wow, he remembered my name. How awesome is that?! Yah, some of the girls were hating on me, and even asked me if I really knew him. I told them I just met him yesterday. Then Chad said, "you're wearing it," (meaning the 'Everlast' shirt) with a big smile on his face and I said, "of course I am, I told ya I would" and he proceeded to give me a high five, whilst all eyes were on us. I told him I wanted to get a picture of us both wearing the shirts, but he wasn't wearing his that day, but that didn't matter. He said he was at the booth for just a little while and leaving in a bit, but to come back in a few hours because he was scheduled for more signings. Hey I was down for that because right now I was too excited about winning the raffle to meet Henry Cavill, Kellan Lutz, and Stephan Dorff of  'The Immortals." So later after the signing and flirting with these beautiful actors, I return back to the booth for another photo op with 'The Chad ' haha.....we talked for a little bit and I told him my cousin and I read the short story and LOVED it! I also said that I was looking forward to it officially coming out in a couple months and I would be the first one to purchase a copy.

Leilei & Chad Michael Murray
It's so cool that Chad is writing. Seeing an actor spread his wings to accomplish more in life made me think, because that would mean that he was much more than just that. Surprisingly that he could be more versatile and show depth in his character and in his work. Writing says a lot about a person, it very well mirrors the soul. The man Chad created in this graphic novel, published by Archaia Comics, Derek Everlast is someone who is a loner but also good and compassionate, a survivor as well as a savior. I am looking forward to reading 'Everlast' and seeing how Chad develops Derek's character and also seeing how the story unfolds in the upcoming months. It is a dark story but a story that needs to be told. Hopefully during his book tour I'll get to see him again and get a signed copy by 'The Chad' himself.....;)
