Mad Max: Fury Road currently has a 98% freshness rating and upon seeing the film for yourself, it quickly becomes entirely apparent just why. George Miller's post-apocalyptic drama is loaded with high-octane adrenaline combined with a brilliant critique on the mistreatment of women.

Mild spoilers below.

Tom Hardy stars as the titular Mad Max, but by in large, the film isn't so much about him. In looking at the film on its own, as opposed to stacking it up against it's decades-old prequels, there is little we learn about Max. With only brief flashes of his past and visions of his lost loved ones, much of his story remains a mystery. It is not difficult to argue that the film's true first-lead is that of Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa, whose back-story may not be presented with any live-action shots but is still explored more deeply than Max's. Theron's emotionality is often highly potent, as it simmers just beneath the surface of her tough exterior.

But the strength of Mad Max: Fury Road is not derived from any one single performance. It is a machine in which each and every cog is of the highest calibre. The action sequences are visually stunning, with the very real-explosions and pyro-techniques elevating the scale of the battles fought. While other actions films can often spiral into a comedic mess due to the painfully obvious transitions between lead actors and their stunt doubles, this one makes use of closer shots in the sequences with its lead actors that leave little doubt that this film cast actors who weren't afraid to pull their own weight.

The commentary is ripe in this film, as the antagonist is a totalitarian-dictator who greedily and hedonistically takes multiple wives to be used for breeding as much as his old and rotting body will allow him to. The women who fight for their freedom and to stop him from further perpetrating his misogyny-riddled violence are all allotted their own agency and distinct character traits, even when in the status of supporting character. It's a rare sight to see in films given wide distribution by Hollywood, but we are hopeful that this film can be a trail-blazer for more quality material for women in large blockbusters.

Hugh Keays-Byrne gives a strong performance as Immortal Joe, with much of his wild rage being present in his gaze. With his face being largely covered, he still played the madness of his character well. Nicholas Hoult is also worthy of recognition, as his ability to play the both manic and vulnerable parts of Nux's journey beautifully. Indeed there is hardly a less-than-stellar performance to be seen in this film, as even the supporting characters are able to make a lasting impression and have a moving story to tell, regardless of their shorter amount of screen time.

In short, Mad Max: Fury Road is the first film to have me truly excited about the future of film since Snowpiercer. With both of these films, we have large-scale sets to backdrop compelling tales of fighting against totalitarian systems and quality material for more characters than just the white-male lead. This is precisely the sort of film that the industry needed. Don't miss out on this exciting and beautifully crafted piece of art!

Like that other Snow White movie, it starts with a once upon a time, has a magical kiss, and oh yeah there’s an apple in there. But that’s where the similarities end. Snow White and the Huntsman is darkly fascinating, a world that has lost hope, and offering a twist to the story previously unseen.

The Evil Queen, Ravenna (Charlize Theron) is more than just a Queen obsessed with being the most beautiful. Her evil has become a necessity, the devouring of beauty and innocence a byproduct of her lust for revenge. Theron is over the top in her portrayal of Ravenna as her will has no end in the desire to kill Snow White(Kristen Stewart), which causes her to promise the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) the impossible when Snow White escapes into the Dark Forest, and the Huntsman is given a chance to be a hero when he takes up the role of protector, trying to deliver her to safety.

While the backdrop is absolutely amazing, and the special effects phenomenal, most of the plot points are so predictable that they utterly take away from the enjoyment of the storytelling. This fresh look at an old classic, certainly has it’s charms, and is worth taking a look at.

The Blu-ray^TM and DVD are loaded with special features, including, A New Legend Is Born, Reinventing the Fairy Tale,  Citizens of the Kingdom, The Magic Of  Snow White and the Huntsman , Around the Kingdom: 360° Set Tour. Each feature gives you a behind the scene look, from conception, to film screen.  You can also hear director Rupert Sanders gush over the much overrated acting of Kristen Stewart, which seems a little wrong to hear now in light of their little scandal. But the Reinventing the Fairy Tale is a much watch for those interested in the German roots of the tale.

Snow White and the Huntsman is available on Blu-ray^TM and DVD today.

And don’t forget to check out our contest here, where you can not only win a copy of the film on Blu-ray, but also a SWATH "female" keychain, a SWATH "male" keychain (bottle opener), sheet of temporary tattoos, and  a mini poster

Charlize Theron stars as the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Huntsman: Extended Edition available on Blu-Ray, DVD & Digital Copy September 11, 2012

Charlize Theron is known for being one of the most beautiful faces in film, but this beauty queen continues to stun us with her amazing physical transformations in her roles. Continue reading to take a look behind the scenes of the actresses’ most famous transformations including Monster, Aeon Flux and the stunningly Evil Queen in Snow White and the Huntsman.

In this spectacular action-adventure, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) is Snow White, the only woman in the land fairer than the evil queen Ravenna (Oscar^® winner Charlize Theron). Ravenna wants nothing more than to destroy her young rival, but she doesn’t know that Show White has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) the queen dispatched to kill her. Together with a handsome prince (Sam Claflin) enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power, they assemble an armed force to recapture the kingdom. This breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders is, in the words of Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV, “A film that soars with creativity, stylistic genius and amazing battle scenes.”

Monster

In the 2003 dark drama Monster, the South African beauty was unrecognizable in her role as serial killer/ former prostitute Aileen Wuornos. She gained 30 pounds and had an incredible cosmetic make-under by renowned make-up artist Toni G (Pirates of the Caribbean, Dawn of the Dead, Planet of the Apes) who used splotchy makeup and prosthetic teeth that resembled the real-life figure. Theron’s intense commitment to this role paid off, earning her both an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.

Æon Flux

Theron amped up her appearance to play a sexy assassin in the 2005 film Æon Flux, based on the TV cartoon franchise of the same name. She trained for 4 months prior to filming using her dance background, Cirque de Soleil gymnastics, and various forms of martial arts. Her impeccable physique and athleticism was topped off with a sleek, dark haircut and tight leather bodysuits. No one can doubt her ass-kicking skills looking as hot and dangerous as she did for this role.

North Country

In 2006 Theron received her second Best Actress Oscar Nomination for her role as a Minnesota miner in the film North Country. In order to downplay her stunning looks, she was given a mullet haircut and appeared to be wearing very little make-up. Additionally her wardrobe in the film was authentic to the character’s occupation, consisting mainly of oversized jackets, denim jumpsuits, bandana head wraps, and metal helmets. Her humble appearance and strong performance embody the middle-America struggle in a memorable way.

Snow White and the Huntsman

In her recent role as the Evil Queen, Theron’s beauty is as fierce as ever. Her golden hair is wrapped in braids under a striking, sharp crown that signifies her wicked character. Theron fully embraces royalty and madness in each gown she wears, all of which were intricately designed by Hollywood costume designer Colleen Atwood. Theron’s interest in playing the queen is not solely based on having an amazing wardrobe, but proves to be another opportunity for her to dive into the mind of a complex character. This is one of Theron’s most edgy and theatrical roles to date, as the audience watches her power and sanity unravel.
