Gotham S3E22 "Heavydirtysoul" Recap (Season Finale)

Bruce is shaken out of the Shaman's mind control due to the trauma of stabbing Alfred in the chest. He refuses to be Ra's al Ghul's heir and Ra's simply tells Bruce that the Lazarus Pit may be used to heal Alfred before leaving. Bruce pours water from the Pit onto Alfred's wound, which restores him enough to get him to a hospital.

Jim is back at the GCPD station, where Lee calls him to say that she'll be leaving Gotham and wants him to leave with her. Jim decides that he will go so they can finally be together.

Ed and Barbara leverage their ownership of the antidote to the mayor's office. They want Oswald handed over to them in exchange for the key to restoring the city to its pre-infected state. Jim and Harvey bring Oswald out of his cell in order to negotiate but Ed has every intention of finally killing Oswald. Jim and Harvey bring Oswald to a factory where Ed has strapped a bomb to Tetch as a backup if anything goes wrong with the deal. Barbara, Tabitha, and Butch show up to the factory too, intending to get Tetch back as he's their bargaining tool. Oswald breaks free from his restraints and knocks out Ed before escaping in the cop car with an unconscious Ed in the back.

There is no way to disarm the bomb in time so Jim slits Tetch's throat to get the necessary blood to create the antidote and gets it back to the station with Harvey. But Jim finally loses himself to the virus and leaves the station. He attempts to inject Lee with the antidote but is unsuccessful. He escapes with Lee through the train station but Harvey arrives and unsuccessfully tries to stop them, though he does slip Jim his badge back. On board the train, Jim injects himself and Lee with the antidote, which Harvey had hidden in the badge.

Barbara shoots Butch in the head for betraying her and he appears to die from the injury. She then fights Tabitha in a safe house and the confrontation when Tabitha uses her whip to electroshock Barbara and seemingly kill her too.

Ed gets out off is handcuffs and tricks Oswald into bringing him to the port, but this was also part of Oswald's plan. Oswald already emptied Ed's gun and both Ivy and Fries followed them to their final destination. Oswald is determined to never let love be his weakness again and has Fries freeze Ed.

Alfred wakes in the hospital and promises to support Bruce on whatever path he chooses next. Selina visits Bruce at the hospital too before going to The Sirens and reconnecting with Tabitha. She plays with Tabitha's whip, hinting at Tabitha training Selina to use it (remember that a whip is one of Catwoman's signatures).

Oswald and Ivy make preparations to use Ed's frozen body as a decoration for their new Iceberg Lounge, a club they will be opening together.

Butch's body is on life support at the hospital and the doctors discuss how Butch's birth name was actually Cyrus Gold, indicating that Butch will return as the super villain Solomon Grundy.

Finally, a family are shown to be walking through Gotham before being attacked by a mugger. A vigilante appears and fights off the mugger before heading to a rooftop. The vigilante is Bruce.d.

Gotham will return for season 4 on FOX.

Gotham S03E21 "Destiny Calling" Recap

The Tetch virus has spread fast through Gotham and the majority of its citizens are now infected. Chaos has erupted.

Jim, Harvey, and Alfred have Bruce in interrogation at the GCPD and are doing everything they can to try to break the Shaman's brainwashing that is still in place after his the Shaman's death. Fox arrives and tells them that Strange had developed an antidote to the virus so Jim and Harvey set off after him. They find him at the train station but Fish Mooney arrives, intent on taking Strange for herself. Victor Fries also arrives and puts up an ice block that gives Fish the means to get away with Strange. Jim is still infected and tries to bodyslam his way through the barrier but to no avail.

Ed and Barbara are searching for Oswald, intent on killing him.

Alfred continues trying to break through to Bruce, but nothing is working. Bruce claims that the Court is paving the way for "the one to come". Bruce is able to escape when riots break out in the station and he heads to the building the Shaman had instructed him to go to.

Butch and Tabitha team up with Fish, now intent on killing Ed and Barbara. Strange is brought to Dahl Manor and Oswald puts him in the same device that Strange had put Oswald into during his stay in Arkham. This is all for the purpose of creating the antidote for the virus. Oswald and Strange then go to meet Fish, Fries and Bridgit in a slaughterhouse to obtain the antidote but are interrupted by the arrival of the League of Shadows who are also after the antidote. Fries and Bridgit get to work fighting off the League and then Jim and Harvey arrive and begin to kill League members in the large scale fight. Fish is accidentally but gravely wounded by Jim in the fight and as a result, she drops the vials of antidotes she had been carrying. Oswald holds her until she dies. Strange must now use Tetch's blood in order to make a new antidote but Barbara, Tabitha, and Butch recapture Tetch for themselves.

Bruce reaches the building and gets inside using a secret passage where he encounters assassins from the League of Shadows. They lead him to a room that holds a glowing pool and meets Ra's al Ghul, the "Demon's Head" that the Shaman sent him to. Ra's shares that he has been alive for a very long time and now wants an heir to his empire, which he intends to be Bruce. Ra's then brings Alfred into the room and demands that Bruce kill him to prove he is worthy of being his heir. Ra's gives him a sword and Alfred pleads with him to not do this, and remember who he is. But Bruce stabs Alfred through the chest with the sword anyway.

Gotham airs on Mondays on FOX at 8/7c.

Gotham S03E20 "Pretty Hate Machine" Recap

The Shaman brings Bruce to the Court so they can discuss the death of the Waynes. But the Shaman betrays the Court by having the Talons murder them all. When the GCPD arrives, one member is still alive and able to inform them of the Shaman and Bruce's involvement in their deaths before succumbing to his own wounds.

Ed tells Barbara, Butch, and Tabitha about Oswald being alive and returning to Gotham. They all decide to go after him, as it's only a matter of time before he comes for all of them for conspiring against him.

Jim goes to Lee's house, having learned that she was the one that stole the vial of the virus. She is waiting for him, already infected, and tries to seduce him while talking about the darkness already inside of him before knowing him out.

Oswald meets with Ivy and Selina at a hideout before they are attacked by Ed and Butch. Selina runs away, but everything was part of a larger plan of Oswald's. He traps Ed and Butch in the hideout and gets away with Ivy while Selina is the one that ends up caught.

Bruce and the Shaman go to meet with Strange who shows them the bomb that will unleash the virus on Gotham. The Shaman says that this bomb will lead the rise of a dark hero (these are more references for DC fans to geek out over). Bruce, the Shaman, and some Talons get away with the bomb when their place is raided by Harvey and Alfred, who are able to capture and arrest Strange. Alfred tries to get Bruce to come home but Bruce is too brainwashed to listen to him.

Strange is kept in a cell at the GCPD, while Lee returns to the station. When Jim wakes, he finds he has ben buried alive in a coffin. His oxygen supply is limited and the only thing he has is a radio transmitter and a syringe containing a sample of the virus. She informs the GCPD that if they do not find Jim in time, the only way he will be able to survive is to infect himself with the virus so he can use the enhanced strength to get himself out of the coffin. Lee is arrested while Harvey leads the other officers on a full investigation into finding Jim.

Alfred interrogates Strange, who eventually reveals that Bruce is at Wayne Enterprises. The bomb will detonate at a train station very soon.

When Jim realises that the GCPD will not reach him in time, he injects himself with the virus and escapes the coffin. Harvey is busy ordering a full evacuation of the station.

Oswald and Ivy arrive at her home but Ed, Barbara, and Tabitha arrive to recapture Oswald, as Selina gave them the address after she was left behind. But Fish Mooney returns yet again with a full squad of henchmen and she takes Oswald for herself.

Jim makes it back to the station and is determined to stop the bomb. But Lee intervenes after escaping her cell. Bruce is prepared to pull the trigger but Alfred arrives at Wayne Enterprises and implores him to remember who he is and not do this. The Shaman orders Bruce to detonate the bomb, which he does. Alfred proceeds to shoot the Shaman, who uses his dying moments to tell Bruce to find the Yuyan Building and the "Demon's Head" so that he can fulfill his destiny. Bruce, still brainwashed, attacks Alfred for killing the Shaman but the GCPD arrive and arrest Bruce. The bomb explodes in the GCPD station and the virus begins to spread through Gotham.

Gotham airs on Mondays on FOX at 8/7c.

But Jim and Harvey must now deal with Ed, who is on the rampage again using his new name, "The Riddler".

Ed is visited by Barbara, who begins enquiring about the secret organisation running the city. Ed recalls Strange mentioning working for a group in Indian Hill and decides to investigate the matter. But first, he decides to kill some actors during a play they are performing for Gotham's upper class.

Jim and Harvey are called in to investigate Ed's attack on the theatre and discover a box containing a riddle that makes reference to a "two-faced politician" (fans of the DC Comics universe will know this is a reference to Harvey Dent). Jim and Harvey go to James' office and find him eating pastries made by an anonymous citizen. But when he tries to take a painkiller, there are marks discovered on the pills. He is sent to a hospital but Ed has rigged a biker gang's bar to explode which leads to a riot in the hospital. In the commotion, Ed kidnaps James.

Ed arrives with James, who has an explosive device on his neck that will kill him if Ed presses the button to activate it. But Jim had thought ahead and asked Tabitha to help by deactivating the device, which allows James to escape to freedom. Jim leaves the station with Ed and brings him to the Court. Kathryn and some others are there to meet Ed, and Kathryn tells Ed to get in her car and he will get the answers he is searching for.

Five visits Selina and reveals his true identity, advising her to leave Gotham to get to safety. She is outraged and refuses to do so, saying he is nothing like the real Bruce. She is intent on telling Alfred but Five pushes her out her apartment window and she falls to the pavement, seemingly dead, but anyone familiar with Selina Kyle's origin story knows this is all part of her character journey leading to her becoming Catwoman. True to her mythology, Selina is promptly swarmed by some cats.

She is outraged that the device was disarmed and when she reveals that she cares only about herself rising to power and having full control as opposed to a collaborative effort with Tabitha, their relationship is further fractured.

Jim confronts Falcone about his involvement with Ness and demands to know who ordered the hit on his father. Jim is shocked when Falcone reveals it was his uncle Frank. She agrees and tells him about the monsters being kept at Indian Hill, suggesting that they can be an army of freaks to do his bidding.

Jim meets with Frank, who tells him the Court doesn't trust him now and the only way we can survive and stop them is to join the Court. Only then can he finish what his father started. Following this instruction, Frank shoots himself in the head.

Bruce is repeatedly being put into a dream-state to relive the murder of his parents. The Shaman tells him that this rawest source of pain will prevent him from becoming the protector he needs to be. Gotham can only be reborn if Bruce becomes a symbol against fear.

However, all of the deaths are shown to be of intellectual and artistic backgrounds. Harvey and Fox are given a card delivered to them by a man in a fruit suit. The card is a clue as to who the next victim will be. The clue consists of a pattern that leads them to the Knight's Tour, a chess exhibit in the city. Ed is there waiting for Jim to arrive but Fox is the one that shows up instead.  Ed turns on a device that electrocutes the people participating in his game. Fox has Lee do an autopsy on Thirio's body and upon doing so, she finds Harvey's badge in his belly. Ed attends the graduation ceremony Harvey is at and drugs him to take his place as the announcer of the ceremony. He uses this opportunity to throw some knock-out gas into the crowd, disarming all of the cadets. Ed tells Fox he needs to come with him and solve another riddle in order to save the knocked-out cadets. When Fox goes upstairs looking for Harvey, they find him tied to chair teetering on the edge of the stairs with just three ropes hanging him in place. Ed begins rattling off riddles with the condition being that each wrong answer will result in a rope being cut. The first two answers are incorrect but Fox guesses the final one correctly. Ed cuts the rope anyway and Harvey nearly falls to his death but Fox manages to save him.

Jim goes with his uncle Frank to a cabin in the woods to ensure privacy to properly talk. Frank says that he returned to Gotham to work out the issues in his relationship with Jim. He introduces Jim to the Court of Owls and how it is a secret society that had maintained control over Gotham for centuries, with its aim always having been to maintain balance. Eventually it became corrupt and both he and Jim's father Peter were in the court. The court had Peter killed when he discovered what the Court's secret plans were. The car accident had been set up by the Court and sent Frank away so he could prove his loyalty to them. Now Frank had returned to recruit Jim to help him take down the Court. After Frank leaves, he reports to Kathryn about his progress with Jim.

Fox leaves the station but is confronted by Ed in his car. Fox has already learned that the other attacks were only there to serve as a charade. Fox wants to know about the other murders and Ed claims that there was someone inside that would cause others to fear him. Ed now considers Fox as his enemy. Ed is ready to rid himself of visions of Oswald and embraces his new identity as The Riddler. The following day, Ed has a final conversation with Oswald at the harbor where he shot him and drops the pills he was taking into the water.

Kathryn and a Court member discuss the ongoings of the destruction in the city and the member advises her to give the GCPD a chance. She remains skeptical of his faith in "him."

The lights will not come back on in the city until the following morning and Jim and Harvey must determine what Jerome's next move will be. Through backtracking the conversations he had with Lee, they realise that he will be going after Bruce Wayne.

Ed ties Oswald to Isabella's car and forces him to confess his role in killing Isabella. Oswald does so and claims to have done it for love. Ed them puts a cauldron of corrosive acid onto a giant ice block so that it will kill Oswald once the ice melts.

Jerome and his followers attack Bruce and Alfred at Wayne manor and destroy his owl statue. Jerome takes Bruce for himself while ordering his followers to kill Alfred. Jim arrives in time to save Alfred and kills the followers. Jerome has taken Bruce to a boardwalk circus where Gotham citizens are being used as game attractions to entertain Jerome's followers. Jerome is more deranged than ever and kills one of his followers for the blood which he smears on Bruce's mouth into a clown-smile.

Oswald breaks free with the help of a police officer but is taken captive once again by Butch and Tabitha upon returning to Dahl Manor.

Jerome ties Bruce to a post and declares what's about to happen as the closing event. He has loaded up a canon with a cannonball plus some knives for good measure so that Bruce will be killed in a boom. Jim, Alfred, and Harvey arrive to save Bruce and fight off Jerome's followers while Jerome lights the fuse on the cannon. Bruce is able to free himself at the last second and runs away while being pursued by Jerome.

Oswald then decides that love means being willing to sacrifice oneself if it comes to such extremities and understands that he denied Ed his happiness by killing Isabella. Oswald declares that he will die in order to save Ed. It's then that Ed appears and declares that Oswald was supposed to die proving that he isn't capable of loving anyone but is now shaken by the twist development in his scheme.

Kathryn speaks with Five, who has been brainwashed to do her bidding. Five is concerned but a Court member says that he will go with someone to join them, adding that "no one refuses the Court". The man then visits Jim and is revealed to be his uncle Frank Gordon, the man who wore the ring.

Gotham S03E13 "Mad City: Smile Like You Mean It" Recap

Dwight and the other cult members infiltrate a warehouse in order to retrieve Jerome's corpse. The GCPD are called to investigate the break-in and discover that the warehouse belongs to Wayne Enterprises. Someone had retrieved various corpses from Indian Hill and the woman from the morgue that was dead more than once had merely been a test of this experiment. After tracking down an injured member of the cult, they arrest him.

Cole pays a visit to Wayne Manor and informs Bruce that Selina's mother Maria is indebted to him for $200,000. If Bruce does not pay it, Cole will ensure that Maria goes to jail. Selina doesn't want Bruce to pay the sum but Bruce pays Maria the money anyway.

Jim interrogates the cult member and discovers that Jerome's cryogenic pod was stolen and also learns of the cult's plan to resurrect him. Dwight and another cult member are show to already be working on Jerome's corpse.

Oswald is still recovering from the interview that went wrong due to Ed's scheming revenge plan. The people of Gotham no longer respect or trust him as a leader and are calling for him to resign. Barbara tells Oswald that Tommy Bones is also questioning his authority and has turned against him. She informs him that she will set up a meeting for him with the other organised crime leaders.

Fox tells Jim and Harvey that the procedure required to resurrect the girl that was in the morgue would require a significant amount of energy and based on this, they should investigate a nearby power plant as it's the most likely operation base for the experiment to revive Jerome. Jim and Harvey head out to investigate the lead but the cult has a mole in the GCPD that tips the other cult members off beforehand. Dwight is unsuccessful in his attempt to revive Jerome and the other cult members working nearby remind him that he had promised the rest of the cult that they would see Jerome's smiling face again. Dwight becomes enraged and murders his assistant before cutting off Jerome's face and taking it with him in his escape before the police arrive to find only Jerome's corpse left. Dwight later addresses the members of the cult while wearing Jerome's face and gives a deranged but somehow convincing speech that they are "all Jerome".

Oswald confronts Barbara, believing her to be a conspirator against him after being called by Tommy Bones, who is claiming that they will end their partnership and also that he is holding Ed Nygma captive. Oswald rounds up his henchmen to rescue Ed, after which Tommy is revealed to be operating under threat by Tabitha who proceeds to kill him.

Jim and Harvey interrogate the cult member that was acting as a mole in the GCPD but he won't answer any of their questions until Lee injects him with a truth serum. The mole then reveals that Dwight and the rest of the cult are planning to infiltrate a TV station in order to broadcast a message to all of Gotham. When Lee returns to her office, a resurrected Jerome is waiting for her and takes her captive.

Maria and Cole are revealed to be scheming together in order to scam Bruce out of money but Selina learns of this and is outraged at Maria for this betrayal. Selina reveals this information to Bruce, who admits that he always suspected it was a scam but paid the money in the hopes of helping Selina to reconcile with her mother. Selina is too overcome by emotion at all of the stress from the circumstances, devastated that Maria never made an effort to reconnect with her until Bruce was in her life and takes it out on Bruce by attacking him. But as Bruce has been working hard in his training, he is able to fend off her attack without receiving too much injury.

Dwight and the rest of the cult infiltrate the television station as planned and take over a news broadcast. Dwight is acting out a Jerome facade while Jim and other officers are entering the building through the ventilation system to stop the cult and save the hostages. When Jerome sees the broadcast taking place, he leaves the precinct disguised in a uniform and leaves Lee inside bound and gagged. Jim, Harvey, and the other officers finally get into the main room of the station right as Dwight has broadcast his message. Many cult members are killed in the commotion and Dwight is arrested.

Oswald receives a hostage call from Ed, who claims to be held captive at Kane Chemicals.

Jerome steals a station van and kidnaps Dwight for stealing his face and acting as him. Jerome brings him to a power plant and attaches explosives to him before beginning a broadcast of his own, claiming that "in the darkness, there are no rules" and encourages the citizens watching to kill anyone and do whatever they want, claiming that in the morning they will be reborn. He then lights the explosives and leaves Dwight to die.

Jim orders a chopper so he can make it to the power plant and stop the destruction but when he goes outside, he sees the power plant explode which results in a city-wide power outage plunging Gotham into darkness.

Gotham airs on Mondays on FOX at 8/7c.

Gotham S03E12 "Mad City: Ghosts" Recap

Jim tries to attend Mario Falcone's funeral, but Harvey stops him from entering, lest Falcone or Lee see him. Harvey is concerned that Falcone may want him dead if he ever sees him again. Little do they know that Falcone is watching Jim from afar as the pair leave.

Oswald is attending a press conference put on by his deputy chief of staff, Tarquin. After it finishes, Tarquin tells him he has set up an interview with Margaret Hearst, a high-profile reporter that can expand Oswald's legacy to reach a national scale. Following Hearst's departure, Oswald has a vision of Elijah Van Dahl (Oswald's father) in the hallway.

Jim finds Zsasz waiting for him back at his apartment to say that it's only a matter of time before Falcone will send him to kill Jim. Meanwhile, Selina confronts her mother Maria for abandoning her as a child. Maria claimed to be on the run due to her criminal life and that keeping Selina would only end up with them being caught and harmed so Selina was left at an orphanage. Selina isn't interested in offering forgiveness and orders Maria to leave.

Fox shows Jim and Harvey the body of a girl that was found undressed on the train tracks but died on the way to the hospital. The marks on her body indicate that an electrical current ran through her but three days prior she had been stabbed and taken to the morgue. While working on this case, Jim is interrupted by Lee who pays a visit to the GCPD to demand that he be arrested for killing Mario and destroying so many people's lives.

Oswald begins being haunted by visions of his father, who repeatedly tells him he's not to be trusted. Not long after, Oswald is informed by law enforcement that someone has dug up his father's body. Meanwhile, Jim and Harvey must speak to the night manager of the morgue to investigate the apparently revived corpse of the young woman. The night manager says that nothing strange is going on but is then shocked to find that the girl's body is missing et again. Jim finds a bloody smiley on his clothes and decides to follow the morgue manager with Harvey after work once they learn that he used to work on Indian Hill.

Maria pays a visit to Wayne Manor and delivers a box for Selina but Bruce is the one to deliver it to her. When Selina opens it, she finds several childhood items in it and decides to forgive her mother.

Falcone and Lee meet to discuss what to do about Jim. Lee wants him killed and even though Falcone is willing to order it done, but warns Lee that this will take a toll on her too. He knows that killing Jim will not be a simple fix to the pain she is harboring regarding Mario's death.

Jim and Harvey have followed the morgue manager Dwight to an abandoned theatre and find a crowd has gathered. A rally is taking place and Dwight addresses the crowd and says that the only person to stand up for the people being exploited by the systems in place is Jerome Valeska. A video plays of Jerome's massacre of the GCPD which leads to Jim and Harvey trying to stop the rally. The group keeps Jim and Harvey at bay so that Dwight can make his escape. When they are finally able to leave, Jim is attacked by Zsasz and more of Falcolne's men. As Jim continues to run, he is able to kill the extra people coming after him and knock Zsasz out.

Oswald is visited again by the ghost of his father who tells him that he will not be able to rest until his body is returned to the ground, and also informs him that Isabella is on the other side with him and that Penguin should not trust the birthday boy.

Lee visits Barnes who is being held in Arkham Asylum in order to learn more about the virus. Barnes raves about the disease and said that it gave him greater clarity, strength, and focus, and is more like an antidote to their regular state. In seeing how Barnes is behaving, Lee begins to believe that Mario would not have lived a healthy life when infected with it.

Oswald is in city hall and finds that Tarquin is having a birthday party, which makes him suspect Tarquin of being the "birthday boy" that the ghost of his father warned him about. He then finds his father's body in Tarquin's office, prompting Oswald to kill him when he enters. Oswald is then called to his interview and he is so agitated that he botches his interview and insults the people of Gotham during it. Afterwards, he goes to Tarquin's office but Dahl's body is gone.

Jim and Harvey return to his apartment where they must fight Zsasz again until Falcone arrives and calls off the hit, since Lee convinced him to do so. Falcone still has not forgiven Jim for killing Mario, but the conflict will have to be resolved another day.

Ed Nygma turns out to be the one that orchestrated Oswald's demise and meltdown on TV, with the help of Basil Karlo pretending to be Oswald's father and pushing him to the edge. They meet with Barbara and Tabitha and Ed swears to make Oswald die a slow, painful death. Barbara and Tabitha want to take his empire.

Alfred takes Maria to a hotel and she kisses him to thank him for all his help. She then finds a man named Cole Clemons in the room who demands that she pay back the money she owes. Selina visits and mentions Bruce's name, which makes Cole decide to go to Wayne Manor later to get the money he is after.

Dwight meets with a doctor and together they conspire to resurrect Jerome whose body is shown to be smiling and marked with death, while other dead bodies are in pods in the warehouse they are working out of.

Gotham airs on Mondays on FOX at 9/8c.
