"Dark Matter" SDCC 2016 Interviews

The cast and producer of Syfy's "Dark Matter" paid a visit to SDCC and teased more of what's to come in season two with shifting alliances and relationships, the show's action, representation, and so much more. In a rare move, the show allowed reporters to speak with the show's guests for a long duration and dig into deep conversations about the show's content. Enjoy these in-depth interviews below, beginning with Anthony Lemke and Melissa O'Neil:

"Salem" Stars Janet Montgomery & Shane West Tease Mary & John's Rocky Romantic Reunion (SDCC 2016 Interview)

Though season two of WGNA's "Salem" saw Mary and John on largely opposing sides, the season finale brought about the return of the devil, the loss of their son, and so John has had to put his quest to kill witches to bed. The chemistry between series stars Janet Montgomery and Shane West has been downright palpable as the on-again, off-again Mary Sibley and John Alden. But after all that time apart and so much heartbreak and conflict, the reunion won't be without its difficulties, as John must come to terms with having been so determined to kill Mary and witches in general, only to learn how abundant they are in Salem. Watch our full interview with Janet Montgomery and Shane West here:

Seth Gabel faces quite the challenge in playing Cotton Mathers in the new season of "Salem". As Cotton is now being magically held as prisoner by his wife Anne, Seth begins the season playing Cotton in a similar manner as how things were when Mary Sibley had her husband captive, with the lack of dialogue and being trapped in his mind. He also shares about how they shot the scene in which Cotton had a live rat shoved down his throat to magically imprison him. Co-creator Brannon Braga also shared teasers of how all the characters will now be united in the fight against the Devil. Watch our full interview with Seth Gabel & Brannon Braga here:

Rounding out our coverage of this year's "Salem" visit to SDCC, tune in to our final interview in which among other things, Elise Eberle discussed the physicality of her portrayal of Mercy Lewis, Iddo Goldberg playing the show's moral compass of the show Isaac, and co-creator Adam Simon shared how the show has always been written and approached as a symbol of the darker side of America. Sean Pertwee on Performing Alfred's Action: "They let me do as much as I possibly can." ("Gotham" SDCC 2016 Interview)

"I don't bounce like I used to, I sort of splat now."

Sean Pertwee raves about the Emmy-nominated stunt team of FOX's "Gotham", and how they have allowed him the opportunity to do as many of the show's visceral actions sequences as possible. He sees this younger version of Alfred that is more physically capable as a natural fit to having these fighting capabilities because of the mentoring role that Alfred has for Bruce following the death of his parents.

"Being allowed to give Alfred physicality makes so much sense now because you suddenly realise who taught Batman to become Batman. The physicality came from Alfred. It's an honour to not reimagine, but just slightly redefine and give him a history and an edge which enables young Master Bruce to become the man he later becomes: Batman."

Pertwee teases that the communication in Bruce and Alfred's relationship will improve greatly in season three, as the two will begin training for Bruce to become the rich, accomplished playboy Bruce Wayne as well as the masked vigilante Batman. He also teases the possibility of Alfred possibly having a love interest and is eager to play that out should it indeed come to fruition.

Ben McKenzie On Jim's Rejection From Leslie: "He's living a very solitary and lonely life." ("Gotham" SDCC 2016 Interview)

Season three of "Gotham" picks up six months after the events of the season two finale. Jim has attempted to rekindle his relationship with Dr. Leslie Thompkins, and failed to salvage their relationship. According to McKenzie, instead of returning to his job at Gotham PD Jim will now be working as a bounty hunter to track down the monsters that descended on Gotham city. As Jim has often demonstrated a lack of a true sense of self-preservation, McKenzie shares how Jim's military background has developed his appetite for danger.

"In our version, he did serve overseas and he did see war, he's kind of one of those guys that once that's in his blood, he can't help but seek it out. He needs that adrenaline to feel alive. He's anything but cautious."

Cory Michael Smith: "I don't think Ed sees himself as having done too much horrible stuff." ("Gotham" SDCC 2016 Interview)

Cory Michael Smith has rapidly risen as a fan-favourite for his role as Edward Nygma/"The Riddler" on FOX's "Gotham". In season two, he spiralled further down the path of psychopathic behaviour as he killed Miss Kringle, the woman he had attempted to romance from the show's beginning, and conspired to frame Jim Gordon. In entering season three, Ed will be released from Arkham back into "Gotham" with the opportunity to somewhat start over, though now the world will be aware of his crimes. Smith shares how Ed will be inclined to operate without emotional attachments to others so as to not be susceptible to vulnerability.

"What we're gonna learn about Ed is, this commandment that he gave Oswald which is 'Don't have a connection to anyone, cause if you do, you're liable to be hurt. If you don't, nothing can destroy you.' I don't know if Oswald is capable of that, but I think Ed is."

David Mazouz on Bruce's relationship with Alfred: "It's better than it ever was." ("Gotham" SDCC 2016 Interview)

David Mazouz is eloquent beyond his years, and highly enthusiastic about his job playing young Bruce Wayne on FOX's "Gotham" series, a prequel of sorts to the more frequently seen Batman mythology. Arriving to the show's press room in a "Straight Outta Gotham" t-shirt, he is eager to talk about the upcoming plot points for Bruce, without giving away spoilers of course.

"There are gonna be some major opponents he's gonna take on in season three."

As the show's writers have a wealth of source material and characters to choose from, fans are often clamouring for their favourite heroes and villains to be the next to grace their screens. The Joker has also been teased, though they have yet to make a permanent casting for the role. Still, Mazouz teased of more foes which Bruce will battle that presumably will be favorites from the comics.

"You're definitely gonna see him develop his playboy persona."

One of the decidedly more adult aspects of Bruce Wayne is the facade he uses to hide himself from suspicion of being Batman. The citizens of Gotham won't be inclined to suspect a spoiled, drunken playboy of being a masked, crime-fighting vigilante. Mazouz teases that season three will see Bruce take the first steps towards developing this reputation, thus brining his version of Bruce Wayne that much closer to taking on the responsibilities of Batman.

"A lot of season two you saw Bruce saying 'I promise Alfred, I'm not gonna put myself in danger', and he does."

This version of the Batman mythology has done far more to flush out the relationship between Bruce and Alfred than those set in Bruce's adulthood. Despite the friction between them during season two, Bruce and Alfred are now set to be closer than ever moving forward. Tune in to the full interview with David Mazouz here:

"Gotham" Writer John Stephens: "We Always Had The Intention Of Bringing Fish Mooney Back" (SDCC 2016 Interview)

When "Gotham" first reached the end of its first season, word broke that Jada Pinkett-Smith would not be returning as Fish Mooney. Many fans were left outraged by the news that the show's sole WOC lead character would be gone and that the show had seemingly exemplified Hollywood's tone-deaf approach to representation. But now it would seem that in this instance, there was less foul play than usual regarding diversity in media.

Writer John Stephens spoke about the third season of "Gotham" and how a main theme is transformation. While characters like Bruce, Selena, and Jim will each be embarking down notably darker story lines, Fish Mooney and other characters that weren't specified will be cycled in and out of the show's universe. Eliza Taylor: "I f*cking adore Alycia and Lexa and Clexa" (SDCC 2016 "The 100" Interviews)

Eliza Taylor has amassed herself a large, loyal following for her starring role as Clarke Griffin on CW's "The 100". Over the course of the first three seasons, it has become a target for heated discussions regarding representation. Clarke became wildly popular to many not only for her strength as a leader of a group of teens that fight to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, but for being canonically bisexual. With bisexuality so frequently misunderstood and ignored in media content, Clarke's loving relationship with Grounder-Commander Lexa (portrayed by Alycia Debnam-Carey, who now has a starring role on AMC's "Fear The Walking Dead") quickly became beloved. But the controversial death of Lexa left many outraged. In preparing for the fourth season, Eliza has nothing but positive things to say about the love story between Clarke and Lexa, and about Clarke's bisexuality.

"I've said in the past when we were shooting season 3 and when Lexa died, I was like, 'She probably will never love again' but that's not true for anyone. We can go through the most ridiculous heartbreak and years later find love again and I want that for her. As much as I fucking adore Alycia and Lexa and Clexa, I do want that for her, she deserves that. So whether it be this season or the next, I don't know, men or women, it shouldn't be an issue, it shouldn't be a thing. That's what I love about our show. 'Is she gonna have sex with a guy or a girl, or is she gonna fall in love with a guy or a girl?' It doesn't matter and it's not even brought up. That's the beauty of 'The 100' is, you've got Brian and Miller, and no one goes 'Ooh, they're gay', you know? It's just natural and normal and that's the way it should be. That's what I absolutely adore about this and I hope that's our future, without the nuclear apocalypse."

Suicide Squad Steals the Show Saturday at Comic Con

Saturday is the busiest day at comic con without a doubt. By this point in the con, people are exhausted, most of us have slept very little, and we're all a little too excitable, and this was certainly the case at this year's comic con. People camped out overnight for a chance to score a signing ticket or a seat in Hall H to see the cast of Suicide Squad, which was easily the most sought after thing at Comic Con.

We chose signing, and I wish I could say that it was smooth going but it was anything but smooth. With the entire cast set to arrive, its not surprise that it caused such a frenzy. What was surprising was just how badly the planning for the signing ticket distributions was. DC please learn from Marvel, and just pass out your wristbands at your booth.

Before we hit any signings, we stopped by the Grimm panel. David Guintoli, Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir-Mitchell, Reggie Lee, Sasha Roiz, Bree Turner and Claire Coffee with EPs Jim Kouf, David Greenwalt were all on hand. The sixth season of Grimm will be a short one, but it looks like a very promising season. David and Sasha joked about their characters facing off early in the season with plenty of sexual tension, which I don't think anyone would be opposed to. Silas is hoping for a litter, and Claire talked a little bit about parenting challenges. Before the NBC panel wrapped they previewed both Emerald City and Midnight, Texas, which both look great.

From there, we made a bee-line for signings. The Suicide Squad signing, was not only the most sought after signing it was also the most packed. The Walking Dead signing was crazy on Friday, but it was nothing compared to the Suicide Squad signing. The sheer number of people trying to catch a glimpse of Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastman, Cara Delevigne, Adam Beach, Karen Fukuhara, and director David Ayer was unbelievable. The stars took to the top of the DC booth to take pictures and interviews, before the signing started.

Will Smith proved to be just as charismatic, as you would think he is. He made sure that he greeted and shook hands with plenty of fans. And even pulled up one lucky little fan, who just happened to be my little one, to meet Margot Robbie. During the signing all of the cast was very chatty, and very excited to be there.

Other signings we managed to grab before the end of the day:

Wynonna Earp: Melanie Scrofano, Tim Rozon, Shamier Anderson, Dominique Provost Chalkley, Katherine Barrell, comic creator Beau Smith

Teen Wolf Signing: Holland Roden, Tyler Posey, Jeff Davis

Wonder Woman Signing: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Director Patty Jenkins

The Vampire Diaries Signing: Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Kat Graham, Candice King, Zach Roerig, Matt Davis and Michael Malarkey

King Arthur:Legend of the Sword Signing: Charlie Hunnam

Friday at Comic Con, Let the Circus Begin

As the Saturday gets closer, the craziness that is comic con gets a bit more concentrated. With programming spread out between the convention center and nearby hotels, you would think that it wouldn't feel so crowded, but that's just not the case. At this point, if you're at comic con, you have to make some tough decisions. The programming is all really good, all at the same time.

Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion open up Hall H with the Con Man Panel, where they received a very warm reception. Nathan ever the charmer, repeatedly told the crowd how he ran a tight ship, which is no surprise that he had to with jokester Alan Tudyk on hand.

Over in Ballroom 20, there was plenty of nostalgia in the air. Bones cast Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz, TJ Thyne, Michaela Conlin, Tamara Taylor, and John Boyd, along with EPs Jonathan Collier and Michael Peterson gathered to talk about their final season. They opened with a montage of their biggest moments from the previous 11 seasons, before getting down to business. There was a whopping 20 minutes shown, which wasn't nearly enough, and a promise of closure.

The Walking Dead panel offered no such promises of closure. Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Chandler Riggs, Sonequa Martin-Green, Michael Cudlitz, Josh McDermitt, Ross Marquand, Christian Serratos, and Jeffery Dean Morgan, with EPs Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Ann Hurd, Dave Alpert and Greg Nicotero took the stage with Chris Hardwick serving as moderator. No, we didn't learn who Lucille took down, but we did get a look at the new season, which isn't coming back until October. We got a glimpse of the Kingdom with King Ezekiel and Shiva, lots of walkers, and a promise of a major showdown after the heartbreaking season opening and its fallout.

While we did attend many signings on Friday, the Walking Dead on wasn't one of them. The Convention floor is always a mad house, but its nothing compared to what its like when the Walking Dead cast takes the floor. With AMC's booth so close, Fox decided to close their booth, and just watch things. The signings we did make it to:

Powerless Signing: Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Pudi, Alan Tudyk, EP Ben Queen, Michael Patrick Jann

iZombie Signing: Rose McIver, Robert Buckley, Steven Weber, Malcolm Goodwin, Andrea Savage, Aly Michalka, Rahul Kohli, and David Anders.

Teen Wolf Signing: Tyler Posey, Dylan Sprayberry, Khylin Rhambo, Cody Christian

Archer Signing: H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Jessica Walter, Chris Parnell, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, Lucky Yates, EP Adam Reed, Matt Thompson, Casey Willis

Salem Signing: Shane West, Janet Montgomery, Seth Gabel, Ashley Madekwe, Iddo Goldberg, Elise Eberle, EPs Brannon Braga and Adam Simon
Teen Wolf Signing: JR Bourne, Ian Bohen

Scream Queens Signing:Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Abigail Breslin, Keke Palmer, John Stamos, Taylor Lautner

Thursday at Comic Con Delivers with Trolls, Teen Wolf and Dark Matter

Thursday is the real first day of Comic Con, and the best way to kick off a con is in Hall H. If you're going to do Hall H and you don't want to deal with the lines, Thursday is a great day to do it. Dreamworks Animation Theatrical kicked off Hall H this year. Trolls was the first feature presented. Chris Hardwick was on hand to moderate, and stars Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, along with director Mike Mitchell, co-director Walt Dohrn, and producer Gina Shay were all on hand to chat about the film. Music is going to be a huge part of the movie, and it looks cute to boot. Luckily it seems that Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake have better screen presence, because their chemistry was off and lacking in person. Maybe the pair were having an off day. The surprise of the morning came with Boss Baby where Alec Baldwin made his Comic Con debut.

Other highlights from thursday included running into Maze Runner author James Dashner and Teen Wolf's Tyler Posey walking about. When Teen Wolf took the stage, they broke a lot of hearts, and not just because our favorite Dylan was absent. Sorry Dylan Sprayberry, Dylan O'Brien will always be our #1. Tyler Posey, Holland Roden, Dylan Sprayberry, Khylin Rhambo, Cody Christian, JR Bourne, and Ian Bohen joined series creator Jeff Davis as he announced that season 6 would be the final season. The good news is that season 6 will be a two parter. But the panel wasn't all dreary, nothing is dreary when Tyler Posey is onstage, as he recreated the water scene from flash dance, and singing Hungry Like A Wolf. Can we get one more Teen Wolf panel next year? I'm just not ready to say goodbye yet.

If you're at comic con this weekend, and find yourself on the convention floor, the Vikings Interactive Experience is one to well, experience. Last season we saw the Vikings take on Paris, and fail to capture the City. Ragnar's legendary life is nearing its end, and if you've read any of the history books, you'll know that he loses his life in a viper's pit. Between the rustling scales, and that distinct smell of snake, it really captures the feel of being in a real snake pit, thankfully without the feel of them wrapping around your feet. To get the full effect of the experience, shorts are a must. Fellow writer Jenevia joined me in the snake pit, but she didn't feel a thing because of her pants. I on the other hand got the full effect and earned my red drinking horn.

No day at Comic Con would be complete without a handful of signings. Like always, we'll be giving a few of them away, so be sure to check back. We visited the WB booth for the Teen Titans Go! Signing with Aaron Horvath, Pete Michail, Greg Cripes, Scott Menville, Khary Payton and Tara Strong. If you have kids with you, all the voice actors like to show off their talents, and its great to see their faces light up.

MTV brought Shannara for a signing, but only writer Terry Brooks and Austin Butler.

Over at Lionsgate, Nerve did a signing Emma Roberts and Dave Franco.

Dark Horse brought the whole cast of Dark Matter for a signing. They're probably one of the most fun cast, teasing each other the entire time, and being at Dark Horse Comics you're able to take those sought after selfies. Melissa O'Neil, Anthony Lemke, Alex Mallari Jr., Jodelle Ferland, Melanie Liburd were all on hand to chat about season 2.

And that wraps Day one for us! See you here tomorrow for Day Two's recap!

MTV ANNOUNCES FINAL SEASON OF "TEEN WOLF" AT 2016 SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON

MTV ANNOUNCES FINAL SEASON OF “TEEN WOLF”
AT 2016 SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON

HIT ACTION DRAMA SERIES TO PREMIERE SIXTH AND FINAL SEASON IN NOVEMBER,
CONCLUDE WITH 100TH EPISODE IN 2017

Stars Tyler Posey, Holland Roden, Dylan Sprayberry, Cody Christian, Khylin Rhambo
and Executive Producer Jeff Davis Tearily Thank Fans and Preview Exciting, Emotional Series Finale

San Diego, CA (July 21, 2016) – MTV today announced to a packed room of over four thousand, die-hard fans at San Diego Comic-Con that its beloved drama horror series “Teen Wolf” will conclude with its sixth and final season premiering in November. The series – which spawned a legion of fans, pioneered social TV, and made international stars of Tyler Posey and Dylan O’Brien – will draw to a close with a 20-episode season, ending with its 100th episode in 2017.

Tyler Posey, Holland Roden, Dylan Sprayberry, Cody Christian and Khylin Rhambo, along with executive producer Jeff Davis bid fans a teary-eyed thank you and previewed  the final season with an epic –and unsettling– Season 6 trailer, available to view here.

“‘Teen Wolf’ has been an extraordinary journey, one that captured the hearts and imaginations of fans more than we could’ve ever imagined,” said showrunner and executive producer Jeff Davis. “We’re eternally grateful for the support we’ve received over these past six years and we’re excited to take our brave fans on one last, thrilling adventure.”

Today marked the seventh consecutive trip to “The Con” for “Teen Wolf” and, as always, the series’ panel had surprises in store. Cast members Ian Bohen (“Peter Hale”) and J.R. Bourne (“Chris Argent”) jolted the cast and fans by thundering onstage dressed as Beacon Hills’ newest villains: The Ghost Riders.

MTV also gave Comic-Con fans in the room an exclusive sneak peek at its forthcoming scripted series “Sweet/Vicious,” a provocative scripted dramedy about sexual assault, consent and revenge on college campuses that will premiere alongside “Teen Wolf” in November 2016.

Starring Taylor Dearden (“Ophelia”) and Eliza Bennett (“Jules”), “Sweet/Vicious” is an offbeat superhero story for the millennial generation.  Hell-bent on bringing justice to those who get away with abuse on their college campus, Jules and Ophelia take on double lives as wannabe vigilantes. Filled with clumsy attempts and missteps, the odd-couple pair of antiheroes must balance their new secret life with best friends, parents, love interests, and the metaphorical monsters under their beds.

At the core of the f*cked up, hilarious, heartbreaking world of Jules and Ophelia is the heart of the show: two girls, who never felt like they belonged, finding a home in each other… and trying to kick a lot of ass.

MTV BOOTH AND EVENTS AT COMIC-CON

MTV’s booth (Booth Number 3729) is offering the ultimate fan experience to badgeholders: an interactive “Teen Wolf” Virtual Reality activation. Fans will have the opportunity to interact with their beloved characters in a live-action scene and, using groundbreaking gaze-activated technology, influence the outcome of the narrative. The two “Teen Wolf” activations, sponsored by AT&T, will be available at the MTV Booth during Comic-Con days Thursday through Saturday from 9:30AM PT to 7:00PM PT, and on Sunday until 5:00PM PT.
Teen Wolf VR Experience: The Tunnels
·         The fan is the focal point in this gaze-activated VR experience.  Scott (Tyler Posey) and Lydia (Holland Roden) find the fan in the tunnels (the setting for Season 6) just in time to warn about an approaching Ghost Rider. The fan’s actions affect how quickly the Ghost Rider makes the viewer disappear. This is the first up-close demonstration of the Season 6 villain.
Teen Wolf VR Experience: The Library
·         In this gaze-activated VR experience, the fan is in the iconic Beacon Hills library with Malia (Shelley Hennig), Liam (Dylan Sprayberry), and Mason (Khylin Rhambo).  As the characters interact with the viewer, he/she quickly realizes that something is wrong.  The direction the fan looks will determine how/where items in the library begin to vanish…dropping a hint to the mystery of “Teen Wolf” Season 6.

Below is the schedule of signings for the MTV booth (Number 3729), also listed on Twitter and Instagram.
THURSDAY
12:30-1:30PM: Austin Butler and Terry Brooks (The Shannara Chronicles)
FRIDAY

Preview Night Is A Wrap!

Every year Comic Con kicks off with preview night. While the programming is light, it doesn't make it any less popular. What good is a half day at comic con without any programming you ask? More than you would think.

The floor is less crowded than on most other days with fewer people in attendance. So it makes it the perfect time to pick up all your favorite books, comics, and collectibles. While you may not be able to get all of the collectibles you're after, its a great time to get the inside information.

It really is the perfect time to find out when and where signings are happening, and how the tickets will be distributed. It's also a great time to find out who is giving out what swag. Check back after the convention to see what Swag we picked up and which were our favorites!

The one piece of programming that is happening on Preview Night is the Pilots sneak peek. Now this isn't the only time you'll be able to catch some of these pilots, and they're not always amazing, but sometimes, there will be a showing that you'll fall in love. Hopefully, that pilot will make it to air, which doesn't always happen. I'm still a little hurt over Locke and Key never making it past the pilot stage after a very welcoming and enthusiastic showing at a past comic con.

This year's showing included Riverdale, Powerless, People of Earth, Frequency, and Time After Time. We weren't able to stay for all of them, but what we did see looks promising.

First up was Riverdale, which is from the CW. I'm not sure why I'm still surprised by the CW but I am, even though many of the shows we recap are on the CW. Riverdale is based on the Archie Comics series, yes, that Archie Comics series, but its certainly Archie comics with a twist. Riverdale is a town of secrets, and the entire pilot has a Twin Peaks vibe.

The first episode introduces us to our titular character, Archie played by the adorable KJ Apa with a horrendous dye job, new girl Veronica (Camilla Lodge), and Archie's bestie Betty (Lili Reinhart). There's a huge lack of Jugheard (Cole Sprouse) who serves as narrator, but the plot moves along nicely. The town reels from the death of Quaterback Jason Blossom, as his sister Cheryl stirs up trouble. The stand-out from the episode was definitely Luke Perry as Archie's dad. Riverdale is definitely making iit onto the to-watch list.

The other show making it on the to-watch list is Powerless. This one is coming from NBC, and its completely different from Riverdale. Its a short half hour comedy starring Vanessa Hudgens as Emily Locke. She's just landed her dream job at Wayne Security, and she sets out to make a great impression. Emily is all shiny and new, full of enthusiasm compared to her co-workers and boss. The show promises to deliver Superheroes without the cast donning costumes as they come up with new inventions to help the citizens of the city. Alan Tudyk and Danny Pudi also star and are absolutely delightful.
