Beauty and the Beast - "Liar, Liar" Recap

Season 2, Episode 3 - "Liar, "Liar"

The episode begins with Catherine putting make-up on her neck wound as a result of the scuffle she got into with Vincent. She is interrupted by a visit from her younger sister, Heather, who brings new that she has been a offered a fabulous new job in Miami (obviously a way to write her off the show considering that actress Nicole Anderson has been hired to be on Ravenswood, the new Pretty Little Liars spin-off show). They agree to discuss this later. Heather questions the wound on Cat's neck, and Cat claims that she slept wrong, followed by a too-deep tissue massage. Heather agrees that Cat should cover up with a scarf, or people will believe she has an abusive boyfriend. Cue the viewers cringing.

Vincent pays a visit to JT, who insists that he tell Cat that he is sorry. JT misunderstands, thinking this is for the stress inflicted on her by his amnesia. Vincent confesses about hurting her and that he feels terrible about it. JT is shaken by this news, but still tries to convince Vincent to not give up and recaps the relationship Vincent had with Cat to try to help. Vincent asks JT to check in on her before leaving. He calls one Agent Tucker, and overhears him being murdered by a mysterious man, who also exhibits Beastly abilities. Before murdering Tucker, this Beast asks how he managed to find him. Before Tucker is killed, he manages to send an e-mail to Vincent. The mystery Beast picks up the phone, Vincent questions this killer on his identity, but he hangs up.

Cat and Gabe meet at a coffee-shop. She fills him in on what happened, and proposes an idea of how to get more information on what has happened to Vincent. She suggests breaking into his houseboat to go through his computer and phone, while Gabe and Tess can be back-up. The only real hitch Cat sees in this plan is that Vincent can tell when someone is lying. They are interrupted by Tess calling, informing them of another Beast attack (the one that occurred in the previous scene).

Cat and Gabe meet Tess at the crime scene. The victim's identity remains a mystery but they have learned that the car was registered to the FBI. Tess questions whether or not this was Vincent, but Cat insists that it wasn't Vincent, because Vincent only kills "bad guys." Tess also learns about Cat's plan and is none too fond of the idea. FBI Agent Reynolds (Catherine's birth father) appears and attempts to take over the investigation, but is shut down by Gabe, who states that it has yet to be ruled a federal investigation. Cat is called by JT, who expresses concern and tells Cat that she should call him when something bad happens (referring to the rooftop altercation between her and Vincent). She learns that Vincent was at JT's an hour ago, confirming that he could not have been the murderer. She ends the call and tells Tess that she needs to be trained to get away with lying. They undergo some brief training before Cat sets out to get on the boat.

Vincent is on the phone with Agent Reynolds, who says that something is going to happen on Friday at 5. Reynolds tells him to get to the crime scene to figure out what Beast was responsible for the murder. While there, this mystery Beast calls Vincent while watching him from afar. He hangs up, and plays a bit of Hide and Seek. Vincent questions him as to what is happening on Friday at 5, but the Beast tells him to stay away or else. The police show up and both of them disappear.

Cat breaks into Vincent's houseboat, finds the e-mail sent by Tucker on Vincent's laptop, and downloads the file attached onto a thumb drive before Vincent comes in. He senses something is off, but she covers it by saying that she wants to discuss their relationship. He states that he wants to re-try their relationship, but that it would only work if she doesn't ask any questions. She agrees, they set a date for that night at seven, and he thanks her for giving him another chance.

Back at the station, JT, Gabe, Tess, and Cat are all going through the e-mail. They find that the names included are art galleries. Cat says that since this murderer is a Beast and Vincent can track Beasts, this date is playing into that plan. Vincent is called by Agent Reynolds who realises the identity of the killer Beast when Vincent states that he's British. This mystery Beast is named Sebastian, and his father is the owner of all the art galleries included in the e-mail. Agent Reynolds states that the NYPD has been looking into the art galleries, and says that there is a security breach. Vincent's suspicion is aroused.

Cat meets with Heather at a coffee shop, where Heather has already made a long list of pros for taking the job. Heather expresses concerns about the distance being problematic to their relationship, but eventually confesses to Cat about the blood results from the hospital stating that Cat was not genetically related to the father that raised the two of them. Cat is angry about it having been three months since Heather learned this news without telling her, tells her to go to Miami, and storms off.

Upon returning to her apartment, Cat finds Vincent knocking on her apartment door. Vincent asks her about her work, and she tries to deflect it. He presses her, trying to find out which homicide she is currently working. He senses that she is hiding something, and she confesses about her learning that her father was not related to her, and her sister's secrecy. He asks for a rain-check and returns to his houseboat. He goes to his keyboard, which he has a plastic cover on, and finds Cat's fingerprints on it.

Cat is on the phone with Tess and expresses remorse over Vincent's betrayed expression when he could sense that Cat was lying to him. Tess states that Agent Tucker had parked near each of the art galleries listed in the e-mail and that he must have been tracking the Beast that killed him. The call is interrupted when Vincent calls Cat. He apologises for storming out, claiming that he was overwhelmed by the recall of a memory, and asks if they were ever at a hotel pool. She is visibly elated by this, and he asks if they can meet there in an hour. She then becomes suspicious and agrees before the call ends. She then calls JT and asks if he mentioned the swimming date to Vincent. JT says that he did, and informs him that Vincent is trying to throw her off by sending her to a hotel pool. JT humorously states that perhaps he just wanted to see her in a bathing suit, but Cat insists that something is happening that night.

Cat does some research and finds out that "Friday at Five" is a painting being auctioned off at Nigel's (Sebastian's father) penthouse. She, Tess, and Gabe dress up and head to the penthouse. Cat has also figured out that Nigel's son, Sebastian, must be the Beast that killed Agent Tucker and believes Vincent will be there to go after him. Upstairs, Vincent picks up on Cat's heartbeat upon her arrival. He is surprised to see her, and she subtly verbally jabs him for faking the memory. She brings him onto the dance floor, where they dance while arguing. Despite the obvious hitch in their relationship, the chemistry is tangible. He thinks she is just using him to get information and get revenge on him for hurting her. She is offended by this assumption, and states that she lied by covering up the wound with a scarf because she cares about him. She scolds him, pointing out his faking the memory was a far worse action.

After Cat leaves him on the dance floor, Vincent overhears Sebastian threatening to also kill Cat (in addition to his father, who is the primary target) before the night is over. Tess chats with Nigel, learning that he feels guilty over sending Sebastian into the military. Tess spots the wound on Cat's neck and is upset about the lie and that Gabe knew. Vincent tries to get Nigel out, but Cat is the one to successfully do so by saying that she spilt wine on the elevator painting. Tess and Gabe have already begun evacuating the guests while Vincent hunts for Sebastian.

Sebastian taunts Vincent before cutting the power, trapping Cat and Nigel in the elevator. Sebastian opens the hatch, Catherine shoots Nigel with a tranquilliser and then shoots Sebastian, who lifts her up onto the top of the elevator. They fight, before Vincent jumps in and together, they knock him off the top. Cat nearly falls, reaches out to Vincent, who grabs her hand and experiences real memories flashing back of saving Cat from being hit by a train, the first time he saved her, and of sitting with her on her fire escape. He saves her from falling, before jumping down to where Sebastian's body is.

Cat returns to her apartment, where Heather is waiting, and they reconcile. Heather apologises again, saying that she missed Cat, and Cat insists that she should take the job in Miami.

Back at the station, Tess and Gabe discuss what happened. Nigel has no idea of his son's attempt on his life, and the FBI is keeping Sebastian's death under wraps. Tess attempts to administer a polygraph test on Gabe, who refuses. Tess suggests that Gabe kept Cat's secret because he has a crush on her, and Gabe states that Tess is acting like a middle-school girl acting out because she wasn't told first.

Back at Cat's place, Cat finds Vincent on her fire escape. She asks if JT told him about the fire escape, and he states that he remembered it. She is naturally suspicious of him, but he tells her of the other flashes of memories he had. He apologises, and states that he only lied because he couldn't trust her because he couldn't remember her but that now it's different. Cat states that regardless, there are still far too many lies and secrets in their relationship. He says that now he can see that she was trying to help and that he will no longer push her away. She says that it's too late and that the relationship he is now remembering had no lies in it. She says that given all the lies in her life, including the newly revealed ones involving her parents, are too much to bear and that dealing with more would be too hard and promptly closes the window, leaving Vincent out on her fire escape.

How much longer till Vincent recovers his memories? Will he recover them all? Will he pursue Cat and show that he is worthy of her trust? Stay tuned to find out!
