Sleepy Hollow S1E6 - "The Sin Eater" Recap

Ichabod joins Abbie at a baseball game, where Abbie yells at the umpire. Ichabod doesn't understand her passionate display of emotion and she gives him a speech about how baseball is the American dream. He then joins her in yelling at the umpire and it's adorably hilarious. Later, Ichabod visits Katrina's grave where he is shot with a tranquilliser and kidnapped. Abbie is driving when Katrina sends her a vision. Abbie is in a creepy room with a crying baby. When she attempts to look at it, Headless decides to show up with his axe in hand. Abbie escapes into another room where Katrina warns her that Ichabod has been abducted and she must save him, as Headless will rise again if they don't stop him before sunset. She also tells Abbie that she has found a way to undo the spell that binds Ichabod and Headless. Abbie must go to the "Sin Eater" and he will help her find Ichabod. Abbie comes out of the vision and nearly crashes into a truck.

Abbie informs Captain Irving about all of this and he gives her permission to visit Jenny to get her help. When Abbie mentions the Sin Eater, Jenny says they need to move fast. Meanwhile, Ichabod deduces that one of his captors is descendent from one of the men that signed the Declaration of Independence. He is a Freemason who needs to be certain that Ichabod is who he says he is. Ichabod proves his identity by saying that "order of chaos" was states by Arthur Bernard. A flashback reveals that Ichabod was about to torture Bernard to get him to confess to writing a pamphlet, for which he was charged with treason. At this point in time, Ichabod was working for the British and this is when he first encountered Katrina, who was Bernard's maid.

Jenny tells Abbie that a Sin Eater reaches into a person's soul to eat their sins. Jenny was tracking one but they disappeared. Return to the flashback, and we see that Ichabod has been "interrogating" Arthur for three days without result. He then watches an execution that continues to add to his doubt about the side he was fighting for. Following this, he sees that his superior is a demon. He then speaks with Katrina and shares his doubts, which she tells him are stemming from his conscious. Ichabod also shares that he has seen a demon and she tells him that he is "the one."

Abbie and Jenny track down the Sin Eater, who has been using the names of dead inmates in order to keep from being discovered. His name is Henry Parrish and when Abbie says that she needs his help, he says he doesn't do it anymore. Parrish doesn't like being able to see the darkest parts of people to the point that he can no longer see himself. Jenny and Abbie remind him that he has a responsibility to help people. Abbie tells him about the blood tie linking the spirit of Ichabod and Headless, which only Parrish can separate. He asks her if her connection is strong enough and she insists that it is. When they touch, he has a vision of the underground tunnels and a door with the Freemason symbol, which Jenny and Abbie then go after.

Back to the flashback, Ichabod is given orders to bring Bernard into the forest and kill him. Ichabod brings him to the forest, but Ichabod isn't able to kill him. Bernard tells him to find Katrina and deliver a message, after which he will be led to Washington. His (demon) Captain shoots Bernard, and Ichabod stabs him in retaliation. He fully assumes his demon form and runs off. Ichabod walks back to Katrina, who tends to his wounds. The Freemasons now fully believe that Ichabod is who he says he is and inform him that Katrina is the one who wrote the account. Katrina had hid Ichabod's body from the masons, who wanted to kill him. They now want Ichabod to kill himself so the Horseman will be killed with him.

Abbie and Jenny find the door and Abbie insists that they let her through. When she reaches Ichabod, he tells her how his life must end so Headless will die with him. She refuses to let him do this, telling him that Katrina visited her in a vision. Ichabod says it is the only way and he even calls her "Abbie" (allow yourself a moment to choke back tears). Abbie refuses to leave his side as he prepares to end his life. Ichabod then drinks the poison given to him by the Freemasons and apologises to her. Parrish then arrives and prepares to save Ichabod. He tells Ichabod he can remove both the sin in his heart and the poison. Parrish has Ichabod summon Bernard and Ichabod sees him in Parrish's place. Bernard tells him that his death is what led Ichabod to fulfil his destiny and that he must forgive himself so he and Abbie may fight the Horseman together. He has Ichabod recite some words and some black goo appears on the table. Parrish dips some bread in it and eats it. It's gross, but effective. Ichabod no longer feels the tie to Headless.

Finally, we see Headless and his Horse arrive at the place where Ichabod's body was hidden by Katrina.
