Homeland Season Two DVD Review

Season Two of Homeland arrived on dvd September 10th, and all I can say is that the series shows little sign of slowing down or lessening its intensity anytime soon. For those who missed Season One you can find that review here and really why haven't you gotten hooked on this show yet? Theres's still plenty of time to catch up before the Season Three Showtime premiere on September 29th.

Season 2 picks things up shortly following the events that concluded the debut season. The delightful cat-and-mouse antics of Clare Danes’s bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison and Damian Lewis’s Iraq-War-vet-cum-possible-al-Qa’ida convert Sergeant Nicholas Brody continue throughout the season.

After her firing from the CIA and subsequent shock therapy, Mathison isn't the most stable person. There's also the little issue of her accusing Brody, who is quickly rising to power, of terrorist involvement but she's also the only one who a CIA informant is willing to work with. Thrust back into the CIA world, without being "re-hired" Mathison quickly finds herself back in the deadly whirlwind game of deception. Her former mentor, Saul, (the fantastic Mandy Patinkin) offers support and assistance as the stakes are raised higher and she fights to protect America from terrorism.

Just as with last season I am stunned by the brillance of the writing. The cerebral intensity is unlike anything else on television. There are few shows that manage the complexity of storyline arcs and character development that Homeland consistantly delivers. And the cast is beyond superb. It's no surprise that for the second year in a row Homeland is nominated for an award and Claire Danes brought home a second Best Actress award for her performance as Carrie Mathison.

The conversion to Blu Ray is phenomenal. The colors, depth and clarity look remarkable and clean.
The Bonus features on the Blu Ray include: A Super 8 Film Diary by Damian Lewis, a home movie and narration by the the superb actor. Return to the Homeland, Deleted Scenes, The Choice: The Making of the Season Finale, and probably the most anticipated and must see bonus:  The Border: A Prologue to Season 3. Season Three looks to just as fast paced and psychological thrilling as the previous seasons.

If you still haven’t checked out Homeland yet, this is one that should definitely be watched, and now that it’s on DVD and Blu Ray there’s no excuses. The award winning drama is genuinely brilliant and one of the finest things on television. and if you have seen Season Two, the wide assortment of bonus features make it worth owning.
