Wynonna Earp S03E03 "Colder Weather" Recap
Wynonna is struggling to come to terms with Dolls' death. She's drinking while stumbling through the woods in search of Bulshar to vanquish and avenge Dolls. Waverly and Nicole have come with her and are armed, watching her from afar and hoping that this will help her in her grieving process. But Bulshar doesn't emerge, only a random revenant does. Wynonna is too drunk to vanquish him herself but Nicole and Waverly are able to chase him off using a shotgun.
The vampire Contessa, whom Doc had previously spared, pays him a visit at his bar. She wants something but Doc orders her to leave, which she does.
Back at the Earp home, Waverly and Nicole meet with a funeral director to pick a coffin for Dolls. Wynonna still isn't handling the situation well, opting to go outside and shoot drunk. Doc visits her and comforts her. They talk about Dolls and how he saved them all from certain death. Later on, the foursome agree to have a wake for Dolls, but Wynonna is outraged to learn that Jeremy will be performing an autopsy on Dolls and leaves in an attempt to stop it.
Back at the bar, Doc discovers that someone has broken into his bar and ransacked the basement. Whomever it was stole all the serum that had been created specially for Dolls. Doc hears a noise upstairs and finds a stranger with a gun. The two men hold their guns at one another and the man claims to have been a friend of Dolls.
Waverly and Nicole go to the hotel room where Dolls had been staying in the hopes of finding something for him to wear at his wake. Nicole shares about the bond she shared with Dolls and how it stemmed from their past traumas. Nicole tells the story of visiting a music festival as a child with her aunt and uncle in the Ghost River triangle. While there, the Cult of Bulshar attacked and killed everyone, with only Nicole surviving the experience. Waverly assures her it wasn't her fault and that if she wants to investigate the matter further, she will support her through it. They continue their search and find an envelope addressed to Wynonna in his briefcase. On the outside, it expresses that it was for her to receive after he was gone.
Waverly and Nicole realise that Dolls knew he was going to die, which Wynonna also learns when she reaches Jeremy's lab. He wasn't performing an autopsy since he knew what was set to kill Dolls and kept it secret according to his wishes. Wynonna is outraged that Jeremy didn't say anything but he retaliates that he was being loyal to Dolls.
Wynonna brings the news to Doc, who is drinking with the no-longer-stranger, Staff Sergeant Ramon Quinn. Quinn is in awe that Dolls managed to stay alive as long as he did because the only thing that would be able to sustain him was the Black Badge serum which is apparently no longer in existence. Quinn shares that he was able to find them because Dolls' squadron would send coded messages to one another using magazine ads. This was done for the purpose of signaling one another to attend each other's funerals without Black Badge knowing. He is the only that came because he is the only one left. The others died but Quinn survived because he wasn't experimented on like the rest of them, due to his having the wrong blood type. Wynonna warns him not to try anything shady and that he has to leave after the wake.
As Waverly and Nicole are leaving the motel, Contessa shows up and steals Waverly's purse with the envelope to Wynonna inside. Waverly is horrified to have lost the letter but they can't go searching for the thief now, or else they will miss Dolls' wake. Waverly tells Doc about the envelope and describes the thief. Doc knows it was Contessa and agrees to help Waverly get it back as long as they keep the matter quiet. The pair leave together discretely while Wynonna bonds with Quinn over Dolls. Quinn admits he is concerned that Black Badge might not be actually gone. But their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of revenants that have been getting high off the serum made for Dolls which they stole earlier. They are aggressive and intoxicated but Wynonna is able to take many of them out with Peacemaker before the remaining ones run off.
Waverly and Doc track down Contessa and get the purse and envelope back. Waverly knows the two had a connectino of sorts and Doc finally admits what it is: Contessa is his wife. She wants to be part of their group but is continually being denied.
Nicole gives Wynonna a tough-love pep talk to push her to make up with Jeremy. She goes to his lab only to find that Quinn is torturing him after learning from Wynonna that Jeremy worked for Black Badge. Now Quinn wants access to the same serum Jeremy had created for Dolls because he wants to inject himself with it so he can attack Black Badge headquarters to avenge his squadron and go out in a blaze of glory. He feels guilty for bringing Dolls back to Black Badge every time he escaped, as a soldier following orders. Wynonna puts her gun down and is able to talk Quinn down and free Jeremy. She then sends him out of town and warns him not to come back.
Wynonna worries that Dolls' body could become a target to ill-intentioned people. To prevent any further harm, and to let him rest in peace, she decides that his body should be cremated. The team bury his ashes with some of his other meaningful belongings. Waverly finally gives Wynonna the envelope Dolls had left for her. Inside is a photograph of her with the entire team. Wynonna takes the gift as a sign that Dolls wants her to keep going with her mission.
Doc visits Contessa again, who shares that Wyatt had told her right before he died that Doc was still alive. That was when she decided she would do whatever it took to be with him. The two then embrace.
Wynonna Earp airs on Fridays on Syfy at 9/8c.
