Molly shares with Henry all that she has lerned from The Kid about his origins as well as the various universes all intersecting with one another in Castle Rock. She seemingly believes him but Henry can't process much of this information since he and The Kid are arrested as suspects in the ever-increasing number of strange deaths.

The Kid and Henry are reunited in jail, as their cells are near enough for them to talk. The Kid says it makes sense that Henry doesn't remember what happened, since The Kid himself didn't remember everything after spending all that time in the cage. But once he returned to the Deaver home, things began to come back to him until he could make sense of it all. The Kid goes on to explain that they need to go together to Castle Lake before the sounds disappear, since the sounds are a sign that the realities are touching which will allow The Kid to return from when he came.

The most pressing reason that The Kid needs to return to his reality is because by being an anomaly to this universe, he causes all these strange deaths to occur. Even by being in the prison, his presence causes various Shawshank inmates to escalate their violence which results in the death of multiple officers and civilians at the Castle Rock jail.

In the mayhem, The Kid and Henry are able to escape from their cells. The Kid forces Henry at gunpoint to accompany him to Castle Lake. On the way there, Henry begins to recover his various lost memories, including the long-forgotten interaction with Pastor Deaver back in 1991. He had pushed Devaer off a cliff because he had been planning on killing Ruth. Henry manages to overpower The Kid, take the gun back and point it at him instead.

One year later, Henry is shown to be working as a lawyer in Castle Rock. It's Christmas time and he has moved into his childhood home. Wendell comes to visit and the two seem to have a better relationship now than once year prior. Ruth had died peacefully back in February, and was buried alongside Alan. Molly has achieved success as a real estate agent in the Florida Keys, finally breaking free of the baggage of Castle Rock. Henry is revealed to have put The Kid back into imprisonment in the now abandoned Shawshank prison. It's unclear whether he doesn't believe in the existence of the many realities or is simply choosing to ignore it.

In a mid-credits scene, Jackie Torrance tells a friend that she is making preparations to take a trip west in order to research her family's axe-killing history at the Overlook, which implies that season two will incorporate aspects of the famous novel, "The Shining".

Castle Rock is available for streaming on Hulu and will return for season two.

Finally, after weeks of suspense and intrigue, the origins of The Kid are revealed. He is actually 'Henry Deaver' from an alternate timeline. This alternate universe from which he originates is explored, as well as the life he lived.

Henry lives a successful life in the city until Alan calls him home to Castle Rock. He is Ruth and Pastor Matthew's biological son, but this Ruth had followed through on her plan to leave Matthew back in 1991. She took Henry and fled to Boston where he grew up happy and healthy. Pastor Deaver was not murdered by a twelve-year-old Molly, but did find the twelve-year-old adopted black Henry who had gone missing in 1991 in the episode 1 reality.

Henry is called back to Alan because his father had committed suicide so Henry needed to go through his belongings. While doing so, he finds the young, black Henry from earlier in a cage. This black Henry had been found at a young age by the Pastor Deaver of this universe and white adult Henry and Molly learn more about the events that transpired because of the tapes that Pastor Deaver left behind. He hasn't aged since being found. Twenty-seven years have passed and yet he's still a twelve-year-old boy.

After some time, the deeper explanation is revealed. These various alternate universes all intersect in Castle Rock, and more specifically in the woods about a half-mile east of Castle Lake. Henry and Molly speak to the young black Henry, who shares that the voices he hears are calling him to the woods. When Molly touches his hand, she has a vision of the first twelve years of the Molly and Henry of the episode 1 reality.

Molly and white Henry/The Kid take adopted Henry/The Kid to the woods near Castle Lake where they begin to see visions of people from many centuries of different universes. The Molly of this universe is accidentally killed by a local law enforcement officer. In her dying breath she implores white Henry/The Kid to help the young Henry. He ends up following the young, adopted Henry to his own reality, after which he became The Kid of episodes 1-8.

This entire recap of events is told by The Kid to the 2018 Molly of the show's primary universe. He asks Molly if she believes him.

Molly finalises her sale of Lacy's house. The new owners, married couple Gordon and Lilith, have their own sordid history that's eerily unveiled. Gordon has one hell of a murderous streak that will only escalate as the episode unfolds. They moved to Castle Rock after Lilith had an affarid with one of Gordon's co-workers, whom Gordon viciously confronted and attacked for this. They decide to turn their new house into a bed and breakfast, but Gordon ends up violently murdering the first couple that books with them. The couple had been having affairs on their respective spouses and Gordon grew increasingly disturbed late at night upon hearing them making love. Lilith walks in after the deed is done, horrified by the gruesome scene.

On that same night, Molly sense through her connection to Henry that something is wrong. She drives out into the woods and frees him from the locked sensory depravation chamber hidden in Odin's camper. They escape the forest without ever discovering Odin's murdered corpse. Molly wonders if she is crazy but Henry assures her she isn't.

Henry returns home and finds his mother sleeping in bed. Upon entering the kitchen he finds The Kid at the sink. Henry wants to know where his son Wendell is, and Wendell returns just then. He seems surprised to see The Kid is still there and Henry tells his son to go upstairs and lock the door. The Kid walks outside and Henry follows him out to the shed where Alan's dead body is still lying in a pool of blood. The Kid informs Henry of Ruth's accidentally killing him the previous night. The Kid proposes that they hide the body in order to protect Ruth, horrifying Henry. Unbeknownst to either of them, Wendell calls the state police out of fear for the well-being of his loved ones. The Kid points out that Henry can hear "them" now. The Kid speaks cryptically about waiting for Henry for 27 years, and having rescued him from "that basement" and not having asked for any of this. The Kid escapes through a back door of the shed, leaving Henry to deal with the police. The Kid becomes the main suspect in Alan's murder.

Gordon dismembers the bodies of his victims while Lilith helps him to cover up his crimes, still determined to repair the state of her marriage. Henry later breaks into their home and discovers Lacy's drawings of The Kid, always the same age and appearance as he now appears despite drawings having dates on them from 27 years prior. Molly tries to call him, saying she will be coming over since she has an unsettling feeling and doesn't want to be alone right now.

Gordon and Lilith discover Henry and Lilith tries to attack and kill him with a knife, out of fear that he will lead to them being discovered for murdering their lodgers. In the ensuing struggle, Lilith accidentally stabs herself in the jugular and falls down the stairs, bleeding out to death. Henry runs outside and attempts to drive away but Gordon attacks him with a knife and forces him out of the car. Jackie Torrance arrives and saves Henry by killing Gordon with an axe.

While Henry must once again deal with local law enforcement, Molly arrives at his house and finds The Kid. He speaks to her, saying that Henry isn't ready yet but Molly can help The Kid, as he believes they know each other. He shares personal information about her to prove their connection, and goes on to say that he has seen her die in the woods.

The episode opens with Ruth continuing the final scene from the previous episode. She is hiding in the storage shed, but then the scene shifts to other various expositional scenes from throughout the season and Ruth's life in general. Some scenes previously seen are re-told from her perspective, and in general we gain a greater insight into her character, especially past the disease with which she has been struggling.

Some other aspects that are presented are her life with Henry when he was just a child, as well as the introduction of the Kid and his return to her house from his previous stay in the psychiatric facility that is not burning down.

Ruth remembers how Matthew Deaver spoke of hearing "the voice of God" for the first time and the relationship she has with Alan Pangborn.

When she spoke with Wendell to explain her condition, she shares how the chess pieces she has act as totems so she can remember what's what as best she can while she struggles to maintain her cognitive stability. Wendell interprets her dementia using a VR game, saying the Ruth is a "timewalker" who must defeat her nemesis. This foe is Matthew Deaver, whom she sees in the Kid.

In the present, Ruth sends Wendell away for his own protection so she can confront her foe. Molly tries to call in and see if she can help. It's revealed that Ruth always knew that Molly killed Matthew and tells her she did the right thing. But Ruth won't let Molly in and decides she wants to defeat her nemesis, Matthew (whom she thinks the Kid is a resurrected version of him). He knows personal details about Ruth, including the song that played at her wedding with Matthew and the combination to the upstairs safe (it's her birthday).

The Kid makes dinner for Ruth and expresses concern about her wellbeing given her condition. He gives her a sedative so she can hopefully get some sleep and rest but she only pretends to do so. She asks the Kid to draw her a bath and uses the distraction to run off and find her revolver. She struggles to remember where she left the bullets but after various sequences of going through her memories she is able to remember that they are hidden in the suitcase buried outside.

Returning to the point of Ruth hiding in the shed, she is holding her loaded revolver and is prepared to shoot the Kid whenever he comes in. Instead, she ends up accidentally shooting and killing Alan Pangborn when he enters the shed.

Henry's song Wendell comes to town to visit both his father and his grandmother. He resents Henry for not being around more but reacts positively to being with Ruth again. Henry later brings The Kid to a patient treatment facility where he will be looked after until he can feel secure enough to remember who he is and live on his own. But Henry doesn't know that The Kid has been speaking with Alan Pangborn in secret about plans to help restore Ruth's health. In an ominous display, a crow flying overhead drops dead and falls to the ground right as The Kid is arriving.

Henry begins to recover memories from the time he disappeared as a child. He visits Molly to try to sort through things and she shares how she was psychically connected to him when he went missing and that Henry was afraid and then relieved while he was missing. She goes on to share how she pulled out Henry's father's breathing tube after he was returned and that she did it because it was what Henry wanted. Henry is horrified by this revelation and leaves.

Further signs point to something evil within The Kid because there were wildfires that broke out once he was released from prison. Also, a radio news program states that a fire has broken out in the mental care facility leaving some patients dead and some dangerous ones to escape. Later, The Kid is shown to be returning to the Deaver home where Ruth has just spilled some of her medicine on the floor, while Alan is out robbing a junkyard to try to get an old truck back.

Henry goes out into the woods and meets Odin Branch, an old friend of his late father. Odin has an advanced degree in bioacoustics and psychoacoustics and is with his interpreter/protege Willie. Odin mostly speaks using sign language. Henry seems unsettled by the discussion of this topic but Odin goes on to share that some who are able to hear these signals will experience it like a ringing in the ear (which Henry has been experiencing lately). Henry ends up being locked in a room by Odin and has visions of his father asking him if he can "hear it now" and become increasingly overwhelmed by the frequencies he hears and the visions he has.

Alan returns home and finds The Kid bleeding heavily and muttering about vengeance on all who helped put him in a cage. Alan runs inside and finds the house in a state of disarray and bloody handprints on the walls.

Facing increasing pressures from the prison higher ups to make the catastrophic situation at Shawshank go away, warden Porter releases The Kid from prison. Henry meets him at the prison entrance and suggests that they reintroduce themselves to one another. The Kid still doesn't know who he is and Henry bring him to a medical facility who suggest that if the context of his life is restored, perhaps his memories will too. But since the medical facility won't look after him since that's not what their primary purpose is, Henry gets Molly to help him find a place for The Kid to stay until they can figure out what to do next. Later that night, The Kid sneaks into a family home where a young couple is celebrating one of their child's birthdays but after he spends some time hiding in the dark the happy festivities turn into angry fighting.

Alan Pangborn speaks at a ceremony to speak on his many years of service to the town but Ruth becomes distracted and disturbed by the sound of a dog barking. She then walks over to a nearby overpass and jumps off the edge into the water below, horrifying everyone present. Henry quickly jumps in after her. She is then taken to the hospital where she is saddened to have seemingly ruined the party and saying cryptic messages about how nothing stays dead in this town.

Molly's friend goes to check on The Kid and bring him some food. They go out to hang out but Molly is called when The Kid goes on to the roof and stands near the edge. Molly goes up to try to talk him down and The Kid thinks to himself that he shouldn't be here and that he belongs in the hole. Molly does her best to reach out to him due to her gifts. Molly eventually talks him down and gives him some Oxy to calm him. She then drives to Henry while The Kid sleeps it off in the car. She warns Henry that there is something wrong with The Kid. Hearing his frequency was like hearing everyone in the town's pain all at once. She shuts down Henry's doubts about her abilities by telling him many things about himself, including the ringing he's had in his ear, the guilt he feels about not being able to help his clients, as well as the feelings he has towards his own son. But when The Kid walks into the house, Henry offers him one of his own rooms to stay at.

After Molly leaves, Henry shows The Kid to a guest house on the property for him to stay in. There is a piano in the guest house, which The Kid begins to play. Henry assures him that more of his memories will begin to return. Later that night The Kid goes out into the woods and comes across a drunk Alan Pangborn in the woods. Their conversations reveals that Alan once came across the warden driving with The Kid in his trunk. He had let the warden go but Alan claims that The Kid is the devil and hasn't aged a day in twenty-seven years. Alan has tried his best to keep the people of the town safe but now is disillusioned about how things have turned out with his life and the woman he loves. The Kid offers to help Ruth and points out that Alan has no idea what's happening here.

The prosecutor visits The Kid and attempts to threaten him into speaking and giving up his name. Instead, The Kid speaks in cryptic phrases and backs the prosecutor out of his cell before shutting the door on himself, leaving the prosecutor frightened and unsettled.

Henry tells Alan that he intends to bring his mother with him out of Castle Rock and to a senior facility in Texas where she will be taken care of. Alan is angry about the idea of Henry taking Ruth out of her home. He tells Ruth about Henry's intentions to move her out of Castle Rock, sparking a fight later on when she confronts Henry on the matter.

Dennis remains determined to help The Kid get out of prison and tells Henry he intends to testify not only on the mistreatment of him specifically but the general misconduct of the prison/guards against the inmates. Late one night, Dennis begins to draw with a dry-erase marker on the screens of the security monitors in the control room during his shift.

Molly continues to rekindle her friendship with Henry while also working hard to sell more real estate. She attempts to incentivize a couple to buy a particular house by noting that the area is in development so the property value will rise after the work is finished.

Henry visits a house near where he was found and finds an elderly caretaker there, Joseph, whose brother Henry is familiar with due to his criminal record (insurance fraud). When Henry begins asking questions about a boy going missing, the man digs out an old box containing Henry's police file, which had been officially reported as destroyed.

Henry returns home to confront Alan about covering up Joseph's potential involvement. Alan reveals that the day before Henry's father died, he wrote out a message, "Henry did it" that prompted him to interfere with the investigation to prevent any law enforcement from charging Henry. Henry begins to question whether he really did do something to harm his father, and Molly overhears the conversation due to her psychic abilities. Henry visits her to express his self-doubts and that he never should have returned to Castle Rock. She assures him that whatever happened wasn't his fault, as he was just a kid, and invites him in to get some rest. Late that night, Henry calls Dennis to leave a voicemail saying that he can no longer help The Kid with his case and will need to leave town soon.

When Dennis gets the voicemail, he goes into the security room again and begins drawing X's on the various screens before checking out a gun. He then goes out into the prison and begins shooting various guards dead. Henry is waiting in a room where he is supposed to meet with his client to finalize the plea deal but instead is met by a delirious Dennis who again expresses his wish to testify before being shot dead by other law enforcement officers.

A flashback reveals that a young Molly Strand snuck into the Deaver home after Matthew was found. He was hooked up to a breathing tube which she unplugged so he would die. Her motives aren't entirely clear until further flashbacks insinuate that Matthew was abusive towards Henry. Henry as a child is also shown to be burning a VHS tape while saying "Fuck you, dad."

As an adult, Molly is still haunted by the guilt of taking someone's life and has nightmares about it. She is reunited with Henry again and pretends to not remember him much, becoming quickly overwhelmed by the sound of extra voices due to her psychic abilities.

Molly becomes increasingly anxious while practicing for her upcoming television appearance so she drives off in search of the local drug dealer in the hopes of purchasing something to take the edge off. However, he is out of pills so he refers her to another location where there is another dealer named Derek she can ask to purchase from. When she tracks down Derek, he is acting out a courtroom case with children wearing masks. Derek brings her to a back room but before any drug deal can take place, police arrive and arrest both of them.

Molly has to spend the night in the holding cell at the police station. Henry bails her out and she admits that she remembers him and opens up about her psychic/empathetic abilities and that being around him has exasperated the situation. She is worried about how she'll be missing her scheduled TV appearance but Henry helps rush her to the TV station on time. However, upon getting to the TV station and on the live broadcast she becomes overwhelmed by Henry's thoughts and worried and instead of speaking about the real estate developments, she makes a speech about the injustice of the local prison wrongfully keeping a man imprisoned (in reference to The Kid, whom Henry is still struggling to get access to).

The warden of the prison sees the broadcast and finally relents, allowing Henry to visit and offering a plea deal which will give The Kid $300,000 and his freedom in exchange for his silence on the unfortunate incident of his imprisonment. Henry is able to speak with The Kid for the first time and asks after his well-being. Henry advises him to maintain his anonymity, as it's a strength to getting the best deal possible. Henry says that he'll be able to get him out of prison and then they'll file a civil lawsuit that will get him an even greater settlement amount. During the conversation, The Kid asks him whether "it has begun" and if Henry can "hear it" but their conversation is cut short before Henry can ask anything else about what The Kid means.

Dale narrate the episode opening, talking about how his younger brother killed himself when he was just a teenager. He also shares about the many other deaths in his family and how there's something wrong with Castle Rock that seems to bring out the worst in people and considerable darkness lies within. A flashback of him as a younger man show him driving to the prison and building the cage that would later hold The Kid. He speaks about asking God for answers and waiting for years for his instructions.

Henry visits Dale's wife Martha in the hopes of learning more about him and the identity of the mysterious inmate. She answers some of his questions but steps away to take a call from a neighbor who tells her that the man visiting her is black and upon realizing that he is Henry, she asks him to leave. However, Henry has already managed to look through Dale's desk for clues and found various items including a file of mysterious newspaper clippings and some calendar dates with quotes about being a jailer.

Henry visits the local church and meets the young pastor who answers his questions about Dale. The pastor is inspired that Henry works with death-row inmates and extends an open invitation to Henry to join the church's visits to the prison where they pray with the inmates who request a prayer-companion.

Molly Strand is the owner of a local real-estate agency in Castle Rock. She suffers from psychic abilities that cause excessive noises in her head from the people around her. She grew up across the street from Henry and seemed to have a bit of a crush or some type of other affection for him. She frequently indulges in drugs to try to drown out the noise that people call. Molly has lunch with her sister to say that she needs $40,000 from the equity on their parents' home in order to afford to appear on local television to talk about the developments she'll be doing in town. Her sisters says no but Molly says she has already filed the papers with her sister's forged signature.

The Kid is put into a cell with another inmate who is shown to be a skinhead with various tattoos indicating his bigoted philosophies. The Kid warns the other inmate not to touch him but it's implied that the inmate won't be respecting his request.

Henry leaves a note for Dennis at a local bar before heading home where he finds Alan digging up the body of a dead dog that Ruth believes might be alive again, as she is sundowning and having problems remembering the dog is truly dead.

In a flashback, a young Molly is shown to be visited by a police officer that is asking about where Henry is and whether he ever spoke about having any negative or hostile sentiments towards his father, as Matthew has just been found.

Dennis calls Henry to say he can't talk to him but is waiting outside for him in his car. He tells Henry about how The Kid has been put into solitary confinement. Henry needs to get proof that this inmate exists or else he won't be able to represent him. Dennis is panicking over the stress and the guilt of trying to help this inmate. Dennis doesn't want to work for the prison but there aren't any better job options in such a small town and he has a wife and child to take care of.

Henry is inspired to get into the prison with the church's prayer group and spots The Kid when he is let out for a few moments of sunshine. The Kid's former cellmate has died under mysterious circumstances involving multiple organ failure. Henry speaks briefly to The Kid through the fence and offers to be his lawyer, also snapping some photos of him with his phone before The Kid is rushed back inside.

In the woods, a dog digs up Dale's head that had fallen off when the rope yanked at it before the car drove off the cliff. Alan is shown to be reading a suicide note that Dale left him, before burning it with his lighter.

Dale Lacy is the warden of Shawshank State Penitentiary. One morning he says goodbye to his blind wife Marth and drives to the woods where he drives off the side of a cliff with a rope tied around a tree with the other end in a noose around his neck.

A woman named Porter is brought in to replace Dale Lacy as warden. When she learns that her predecessor kept Block F unoccupied for a good thirty years, she sends some of the guards down to investigate, as it seems an ideal space to use for new prisoners that will eventually be brought in. A young prison guard named Dennis Zalewski discovers a tunnel which he goes down using a ladder, where he discovers a mysterious inmate being held in a cage. The man's prints don't match anyone in their records and there are no other ways to identify him. He doesn't speak for some time until he finally relents and says only a name - Henry Matthews Deaver.

Henry is a criminal law attorney in Texas who specialises in capital punishment cases. He grew up in Castle Rock where he had grown up adopted by Ruth and Reverend Matthew Deaver. Matthew had disappeared in the woods with Henry only to be found with his back broken and died three days later. Henry was also found later but with no memory of what happened in the woods and the town turned on him, believing him to have been his adoptive father's killer, possibly due to racist biases since Henry is African-American and his adoptive parents were white.

Henry returns to Castle Rock to visit his mother and learns that her dementia is worsening and she has begun dating Alan Pangborn, the former police officer that had found Henry when he went missing in the woods. Dennis secretly calls Henry to tell him about the new inmate that is asking for him, afraid that the man is not being given the rights he is owed. When Henry visits the prison, the new warden Porter pretends not to know what inmate Henry is talking about. On his way out of the prison, Henry spots Dennis working a shift and seemingly recognises but doesn't say anything to get his attention.

Dennis is working a late-night shift when he seemingly spots the new inmate, who has been named "The Kid", on the surveillance cameras walking around the hallways of the prison and many dead bodies throughout the prison. He sets off the alarm and many guards come running, one of which he almost shoots. But there are no bodies to be found and The Kid is still in his cell.

In a flashback to before Dale killed himself, he visits The Kid in his cage and tells him to ask for Henry Matthew Deaver after he is found.
