Winston and some other townsfolk are armed and face off against some of the LAMBDA agents, demanding that they fly them out of town. Some ghosts appear, distracting the townsfolk. The armed agents make a run for it to board their helicopter and try to escape. But not long after the helicopter gets into the air it hits the supernatural barrier that keeps everything trapped, causing it to flip upside down and crash onto the ground down below, exploding on impact.

Roman and the others form a plan to fight back the ghosts. Roman will assemble the artifact and Billy, Val, Landis, and Daphne will be ghosts that try to go to Death's Door and put an end to all that has happened. Marilyn will tend to the bodies and do whatever is needed to ensure they come back to life once the mission is complete.

Val addresses the townsfolk at the bar and informs them of how they'll be embarking on a mission to try to save the town and that it's been an honour being their mayor. Doug is more than willing to look after the other people and try to protect them while their leaders risk their lives. Daphne tells Landis she wants her back working for her once this is finished but Landis tells her they need to survive this mission first before they have the conversation. Billy asks Roman who is real father was and Roman says he's never known who he was. Billy admits to having had flings with Roman's mother but upon realising the implication that Billy could be Roman's father they awkwardly separate.

Maggie visits Roman and tries to advise him not to go through with the plan to rid the town of all the spirits. She is insistent that she won't let the townspeople use Roman or hurt him, and reveals that she is aligning herself with the new spirits to try to stop them.

Winston arrives at the bar and brings a generator and a supply of gas as a peace offering, wanting to stay at the bar. He and Doug have an awkward reunion but it seems that for now they're willing to put their past conflicts aside.

The main group gathers in the church. Marilyn prepares some IV bags to hook up to the bodies that will be going under while Abigail and Isabel stay close by watching. Billy reveals a problem to Landis with his arm that suggests he is seemingly dying from his repeated visits to the other side. She tells him not to say anything right now because there is no other back-up plan and they are all needed to complete this mission.

Roman assembles the artifact and Billy, Landis, Val, and Daphne are displaced from their bodies onto the spiritual plane. Billy instructs them on how to transport themselves to the LAMBDA institute. Roman heads out to get to LAMBDA while the group prepares to fight off some of the ghosts beginning to appear.

The other still-alive members of the team turn on the accelerator again, hopeful that it will banish the ghosts but after a while the ghosts reveal that they're still around. One LAMBDA employee is badly attacked by being slammed on concrete walls.

Billy proposes that he sacrifice himself to open Death's Door in order to finally bring an end to all these ghost attacks. Daphne tries to offer herself instead, saying she is already dying. But Billy insists that he needs to be the one to do it. Marilyn will have to kill Billy's body in the real world so he can reach Death's Door. Billy says his goodbyes to Val and Landis.

Marilyn can't bring herself to kill Billy's body so Daphne's second-in-command agrees to do it for her, getting a dose of a lethal chemical to inject into him. Roman and Landis hold Billy on the spirit plane as he feels that he is dying. Landis says goodbye to him once more, saying that she loves him. Billy finally addresses Roman, as the two have come to the realisation that Billy is Roman's father. There isn't much time, as the ghosts have begun attacking again. Billy apologises to Roman for all the grief he has given him and Roman forgives him, saying he is a good man. They part ways and Roman works fast to get the other spirits back to the church so he can disassemble the artifact before Billy reaches Death's Door and opens it to send all the extra ghosts through to the other side where they belong.

Val and Landis wake safely and are concerned that Daphne seemingly hasn't gotten back in time but after a delay, she also wakes. The town grieves the loss of Billy and celebrate him for his sacrifice to save all of them. Landis and Daphne's second-in-command become concerned when they realise they don't know where the artifact is and both Roman and Daphne are missing. Doug gloats to them, saying he always warned them not to trust Roman.

Roman leaves on Billy's boat with Daphne, whose body has been taken over Maggie. The artifact is on board with them and the pair are running away together.

Some time later, some children in the town follow after the ghost of Rev. Dan, who is walking down the road by the church, whistling.

A woman is singing in the shower but after a moment is revealed to be walking through the streets naked and consumed by fire. Winston comes hurrying over with a fire extinguisher to try to save her.

Abigail speaks to her mothers through Isabel's body to say that she wants her body to be destroyed so it can't be used to hurt anyone else, as the Abigail-body had been recently used to feed on Val's life force. Karla's body has been buried following her death at the hands of her offspring. The town decides to drink their worries away until Doug confronts them all and orders that everyone leave Karla's bar unless they are interested in maintaining the location as a safe haven.

At LAMBDA, Daphne performs dangerous experiments regarding the ghosts. She is still working to gather enough power to restart the particle accelerator.

Norm sits next to Karla's grave and drinks his sorrows away. Winston comes by and informs him of how Doug has claimed Karla's bar for himself and encourages Norm to take charge of the situation.

Val continues to allow Abigail to feed from her in controlled doses. She and Marilyn argue about the situation but when Val goes outside she is confronted at gun-point by Norm. He is leaving his role as a police officer but has brought some other armed men along to kidnap Abigail, Isabel, Marilyn, and Val whom he knocks out with the butt of his gun.

Winston returns to the bar with some armed men, one of whom knocks Doug out with the butt of his gun so the group can take the bar back for themselves.

Billy wants to bring Landis with him so they can leave town but Landis blames herself for the experiment going wrong and wants to stay and fix it. But when they are driving down a road to head out of town they encounter a barricade set up by some of Norm's men. Billy and Landis are accompanied by another LAMBDA vehicle with two armed guards in them. One of them is shot through the head by a local and his ghost distracts the rednecks long enough for his partner to be able to get into the back of Billy's truck. Billy drives them through the barricade to get away from the commotion.

Norm's men are looking for Roman and want to get into the LAMBDA institute. Roman is warned by Maggie that Norm is rounding people up and her other father has been locked up with others. Now they are coming after him and she wants him to get away to safety. Roman determines that he needs to get to LAMBDA but Maggie implores him to help her father first. Roman remains set on getting to LAMBDA, saying that Doug will be safe in jail. Roman forces Winston out of his truck at gun-point so he can drive to LAMBDA. Winston relays the information on Roman's whereabouts to Norm, who pulls Val out of her holding cell.

Landis explain the legend of the Whistling Man, which tells of how the artifact that LAMBDA is studying had fallen into their town with such impact that it caused a rift to the afterlife. Landis postulates that the object can only be reassembled in the afterlife and Daphne orders her man to go find Roman. Landis still blames Daphne for not being honest and forthcoming from the beginning.

Roman arrives at LAMBDA and tells Billy how his family has been taken captive by Norm's new army. A cop car driven by Norm pulls up and Billy tells Roman to head inside. Billy confronts him about taking his family captive and Norm orders another van to pull up. He opens the side door to reveal Val who warns him not to do anything before the door is shut again. Norm tells Billy that if he doesn't stop whatever LAMBDA is up to in five minutes he will kill Val.

Meanwhile Abigail is growing increasingly hungry in the holding cell, alarming Marilyn and Isabel. Abigail passes out and Marilyn wraps her tightly in a a blanket hoping it can serve as a barrier or restraint for the time being.

Billy reaches Roman who is with Landis and Daphne, standing near the strange object. He warns them of the threat outside and that Roman needs to act fast. Roman assembles the object and it causes everyone else in the room besides him to pass out. Landis' spirit rises and tells Roman to separate it again and the group is able to rise up. Billy determines that they've found a way to save his family.

There is a stand-off outside between the armed LAMBDA security against Norm and his men. Landis emerges and says that Daphne has agreed to meet Norm if he comes inside and in exchange, Dr. Clark will act as a second hostage. Norm doesn't want to go inside but Landis relays the message that Daphne doesn't care if the mayor dies and this is the only way he'll get to meet her. Landis leaves Norm alone in a room with Roman, who says Daphne will be along in a minute. Roman uses the object to knock Norm out.

Some time later, Norm emerges from the building and orders Val be released. He promises her he'll release her family and tells his men that they need to go. It's revealed that Norm is still being kept hostage inside LAMBDA but he is now in Billy's body while Billy's spirit is in Norm's body. Billy-as-Norm gets into the cell and tries to free his family and tells them to go back to LAMBDA but he gets knocked out by Winston, who in turn gets knocked out by Doug who had been let out of his cell. The family heads back to LAMBDA where Billy, Norm, Isabel, and Abigail are all left in a room with Roman and the object. When he puts it together, the spirit that has been using Abigail's body is shot gone with a special object and the girls move to prepare to go back into their own bodies. Billy goes back towards his body but Norm refuses to go back to his body, saying he's finished and just wants to be buried next to Karla. Roman pulls the object apart and Billy is cut loose from the restraints used to keep Norm captive.

True to his wishes, Norm is buried next to Karla. Maggie visits Roman at Norm's grave where she reminds Roman that the reason why she wants to stay is him, and that she doesn't understand why Roman wants to leave. Roman notes that this artifact is dangerous but Maggie says that is only the case if it's in the wrong hands.

Winston continues to raid Karla's bar for supplies but he caught by Doug and some other townsfolk that want revenge for his wrongdoings.

Landis is angry at Billy for dying on her again so he assures her he isn't going anywhere.

Roman, Norm, and Val look at the charred remains of Paolo, Sophia, and Father Dan in the church basement. Roman gives Val a letter from Father Dan warning about Abigail while Norm goes to check out Karla who is heavily pregnant and vomiting up black bile into the bathroom sink. Karla already has the sense that Paolo is dead and Norm is shocked to see how pregnant she has become practically overnight.

Val is horrified to learn that Abigail has been so negatively impacted by her time in the pod. She lashes out at Roman for having said before that she was fine.

Norm gets Marilyn to come check on Karla and says that she's fine and will do an ultrasound on her in a few days. Marilyn tells Norm that Karla is simply claiming to have become pregnant overnight as a way to deal with the shock of losing her husband. Norm is worried that the baby isn't normal but Marilyn assures him things will be fine.

Val tells Marilyn about how Dan wanted to kill Abigail because it isn't really her anymore. They are concerned for her well-being and also acknowledge how Isabel has been warning them since Abigail returned that it wasn't really her sister. Despite their worries, they decide to continue on as normally as possible until they can determine the best course of action.

Roman discovers a glowing orb that when he touches, has flashes of appearing as a larger glowing cube before Roman stumbles back from it.

Norm asks Karla what she's going to do about the baby and expresses concern for her well-being. Initially she is angry at him for what she believes is encouragement to terminate the pregnancy. He assures her that he was merely offering to help her with the pregnancy and with raising the child.

Winston asks Norm for some gas for his car but Norm has none to spare since he needs to be able to get around and help Karla with her pregnancy. Norm brings the gas to Karla's place to fill up her generator. She asks him to cook up some steak for her, as she's having pregnancy cravings.

Val and Marilyn visit LAMBDA and ask Daphne to share the information she has on what happens to people when they come out of the pods. The information is confidential so Daphne instead tells them to bring Abigail in to be checked out with the promise that they can stop things whenever they want to.

Norm checks in on Karla's bar and finds Winston there looting. Norm threatens him at gunpoint into stopping, leaving, and never coming back to attempt to steal from there again despite Winston's protests that he hasn't eaten in three days. The town is beginning to run low on food in addition to many other necessities. Norm cooks up the retrieved beef for Karla, who hungrily consumes a large portion of it. When Norm expresses concern over being able to make the limited food supply last, Karla tells him that the Heaton house further out from town have a considerable amount of meat in their freezer. As the owner is dead, it should be up for grabs. Norm isn't fond of the idea of partaking in looting himself but decides to go ahead with it for the sake of Karla and the baby. When he gets to the basement he picks out several frozen and wrapped meat samples and puts them into his bag. One seems an odd shape so he begins to unwrap it. He is shocked to find a human hand cut off just beneath the elbow. The hand flies up and begins to strangle him so Norm gets out his taser and the electric charge makes the hand disappear as just another ghostly hallucination.

Norm drives home and on the way over becomes concerned by the appearance of black smoke. He runs up, believing the generator to be on fire but when he gets to the upper level the smoke is gone. Karla comes out and ushers Norm back inside to cook her up more meat. Over dinner, Norm expresses an interest in getting Marilyn back to do an ultrasound and Karla lashes out at him saying to leave it alone. She apologises immediately, claiming it's just hormones and letting him feel the baby kick. He is momentarily frightened by a seemingly unnatural movement from her abdomen but Karla assures him things are fine and invites him to stay the night with her.

Marilyn later gives Norm some medicine for Karla and assures him that the cravings are normal and to keep on feeding her.

Val and Marilyn bring Abigail to LAMBDA to have her checked up on. They take a blood sample to examine more closely.

Norm returns to the Heaton house to retrieve more frozen meat samples. He is frightened out of the house by a large tree-like creature that emerges from a different freezer. He runs outside screaming and drives away with the bit of meat he had already grabbed.

Roman struggles with the guilt he feels over not forgiving Dan before he died. Maggie advises him to be strong and that things will be okay.

Norm prepares a large feast for Karla, who angrily snaps at him when he proposes sharing the extra meat with the other hungry townsfolk. Norm is frightened when he has a vision of the feast as a more gruesome display of meat and decides not to eat any. The following morning, Norm wakes up in bed with Karla and he tells her about a nightmare he had of being in the ocean surrounded by corpses. She says that she can cheer Norm up and informs him that the baby is a boy and a miracle baby. She wants to name him Paolo Norman Jones, after both of his fathers.

Daphne tells Val and Marilyn that their daughter isn't their daughter anymore. They don't believe her claims so she tells one of the scientists to "go ahead", after which she leaves a rat in a box in front of Abigail. Daphne, Val, and Marilyn watch from an observation level as Abigail takes the rat out of the box and supernaturally sucks the life out of it until only a dehydrated rat corpse is left behind. Val and Marilyn inject Abigail with a sedative and tell Daphne they want to take her home.

Karla asks Norm to go pick up some more meat and he expresses reluctance to go since he thinks visiting the place may be what's giving him nightmares. When she offers to go instead, he says he'll go. While there, Norm is approached by Winston. Norm apologises for lashing out before and offers to give Winston some of the meat he has taken from the house. Winston tells him he's not carrying caribou and that he isn't Winston. "Winston" is revealed to actually be Roman who is trying to tell Norm that he's hallucinating and the meat he has retrieved is actually the charred remains of a dead body. Norm pulls his gun on Roman and knocks him out when he tries to get Norm take his hand (since it would reveal the truth of what he's actually looking at) and drives away with the meat.

Norm tries to warn Karla that they need to run away since Winston attacked him at the Heaton place. She goes with him but warns that the baby is coming. Roman meets with Val to let her know what's going on and says the old Heaton place doesn't exist. Val also tells Roman that Marilyn hasn't been seeing them since she hasn't had any new patients for some time. Val sends one of the townsfolk to find Billy and tell him what's going on.

Norm brings Karla to the morgue where she begins to experience labour pains. Roman and Val enter Karla's home and are shocked to find all the dead human remains that she's been feeding on.

Daphne is informed that Abigail's decaying cycle is growing faster than what they found in Jones' body and that she only has a few weeks to live. Taking over these bodies was either a flawed system or never meant to be permanent.

Val and Roman find where Norm and Karla are. Norm tries to get them to leave but once Roman touches him, he finally sees the truth. As Karla is in the final moments of giving birth, her abdomen is glowing in a similar manner as the pods. She lunges forward and gets on all fours before vomiting up a worm-like creature with claws around its 'face'. She picks up the creature and calls it "Paolo" before saying it has his father's eyes. The creature's tail wraps around her throat and begins to choke her, and Norm grabs his gun and fires.

The LAMBDA scientist perform an autopsy on the pod they recovered from the house Rev. Dan burned down. Inside is a man, whom they cut open next. The man wakes screaming when one of his organs are removed. Dan has been drinking to cope with the trauma of recent events and tries to confront Marilyn and Val about how there is something insidious going on with their daughter who was trapped in a pod. He also tries to confront Sophia when she is trying to lure a man back for her to feed on. No one seems to believe Dan about his claims regarding those in pods.

Roman meets Dan at the local bar, who tells him about how the pods are being used against the people. Dan also reveals to Roman that he set the house on fire to destroy more pods within but there is still one pod at the LAMBDA institute. The man that was being operated on, originally a Dr. Jones who worked at the institute, is shown to have rapid regeneration. When an organ is removed, it grows back. If he is cut, the wound heals rapidly with no scarring left behind. Daphne wants to further explore this for the scientific progress it offers.

Sophia comes to babysit Abigail and Isabel. Isabel runs off afraid from the pair of them when left alone, and Abigail and Sophia plot together to kill Rev. Dan because he knows too much about the pods and it's only a matter of time before more people start to believe him. Dan goes with Roman to LAMBDA. Roman wants answers about the latest pod and the man inside. Daphne reveals that Jones is psychically connected to his extracted livers and that if they feel pain, he feels pain, and vice versa. This suggests a psychic connection between all pod-people. Dan wants to destroy Jones and the livers but Daphne says these regenerative cell properties are an important scientific development requiring further study. Roman leaves the institute.

On the way out, one of the employees gives Dan a key to come back into LAMBDA to try to destroy Jones. Jones wakes and attacks one employee, draining their life force till they're nearly a mummified corpse. Dan stabs Jones repeatedly with a scalpel but it does nothing to stop him from running through the institute, killing employees, and escaping. Daphne tells Dan she knows someone gave him a key and he tells he knows that she's dying, which is the real reason why she's so hungry to harness these beings for medical purposes.

Jones heads to the local bar and meets his wife Karla, who has been looking for him since he disappeared. The two have sex and Jones feeds from her during the act but she doesn't seem to notice.

Dan goes after Sophia but instead finds Isabel locked in one of the body shelves, frightened but seemingly unharmed. Isabel tells Dan he should be scared of what's going on. Both Abigail's true conscious and Isabel speak to Dan. Isabel says that someone else is in Abigail's body and that Sophia is gone. Dan wants to help them but Isabel says no one can help them, and that they're coming for him.

Sophia attempts to feed on Winston but Dan stops her just in time. He tells Winston to get Isabel from downstairs and to run away. Dan beats Sophia with a shovel to knock her out. The attack has alerted Abigail and Jones, who runs off to come help leaving his wife confused at the bar. Sophia wakes in the cellar of the church with Dan flicking a lighter on and off. Sophia, or whomever is inside her, taunts Dan for his faith and attraction to (the original) her. Sophia also pauses to impermanently self-mutilate herself to draw the others to her location. Dan realises that there is nothing left of Sophia in her body and reveals that he knows the others are coming because of their shared ability to feel each other's pain. When Abigail and Jones arrive, Sophia tries to warn them not to come in but Dan knocks them down and beats them into unconsciousness to tie them all up together. Dan prepares to set them on fire and leave but a ghostly presence locks him in with them. Dan prepares to set them on fire, regardless of the end it will pose to his own life but is distraught when he finds that his lighter will no longer light. Dan says a prayer and then a candle mysteriously lights and the entire room is set ablaze.

Roman arrives at the church, seeing the smoke coming from below. Abigail recovers and emerges from the ashes, escaping just in time before Roman arrives at the scene. He finds Dan's cross necklace in the remains and leaves to sit down and reflect on what's happened.

Karla wakes the following morning and discovers she is pregnant with it having advanced to the third trimester overnight.

The town mortician, Sophia, offers to help a young boy that is lost but when she hugs she appears to deplete his life force.

Landis tries to help Billy recall his memories from when he was a ghost and together they realise that the large blue light he was seeing was the accelerator in the the LAMBDA institute.

Things are still tense between Roman and Rev. Dan. Dan tries to mend their relationship but Roman isn't interested after such a heavy betrayal.

Landis and Billy converge on a field where a LAMBDA helicopter has landed but are quickly surrounded by armed passengers of it. Dr. Clark is the leader of the group and Landis knows her as her boss. She shares the information she has on the strange happenings in the town and Clark is unsurprised by the revelation, saying that the town had disappeared entirely from the outside perspective. Clark tasks one of the agents with guarding Billy at the helicopter while Landis accompanies Clark with other guards to head into town.

Dan discovers the body of a woman, Melanie, that has killed herself. He visits Sophia and asks her to help him take care of the body and she agrees. Sophia runs off when she and Dan are interrupted tending to the body by another town resident. Sophia is later shown to be luring another stranger down into her basement.

Billy is able to disarm his guard and hold him at gunpoint, taking him as a hostage back into town. They arrive at the bar where various LAMBDA higher-ups are trying to offer help but are met with distrust by the townsfolk. Roman correctly deduces that the man claiming to be their leader isn't actually in charge. A woman named Daphne Holt introduces herself as the one in charge and class  she'll be able to solve the ghost problem.

Landis is at LAMBDA sharing all the information with Clark and how she had to strip the electrical components from the accelerator to act as a shield that nullifies the ghost's hallucinogenic-inducing powers. Clark orders her to get the accelerator running again. Daphne meets Landis who warns her that restarting the accelerator is a bad idea. Daphne becomes interested in Roman's powers when she observes him using them on some surveillance footage of him fending off a ghost that was attacking Landis.

Billy and his sister clash with their opinions on the new LAMBDA officers. Billy doesn't trust them but his sister is more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Landis comes over and informs them they need to try to stop LAMBDA from re-starting the accelerator. Meredith agrees to talk to Daphne Holt. Billy is upset at Landis for keeping secret her part in what may have caused the ghostly problems of the town but when she reminds him of what he and the others did to Roman's mother he relents.

LAMBDA is working on preparing the accelerator but Landis looks Clark in a holding cell so he can encounter a ghost and understand what they have been dealing with. He begins screaming in terror almost immediately after she cuts the electrical power of the room. He is shaken from the hallucinations he experiences and is determined to leave but Landis informs him that they are all trapped and have been ever since this started. When Clark tells Daphne, she is unsurprised, having always known of this risk.

Dan visits Sophia to see how she is doing and after she invites him in, she grabs his hand and begins to weaken him with some sort of seemingly supernatural-ability and her eyes turn completely black while doing so. She proceeds to kidnap him and drive him to the strange house she was 'laying eggs' in at the end of the previous episode. She forces him against a glowing orb that unleashes tendrils that attach to him. Sophia leaves him entangled and Dan prays to god to be killed. He spots a nearby basked of sewing supplies and is able to retrieve a pair of scissors that he uses the cut the tendrils off of him and break free. He sets a curtain in the attic on fire before running outside and getting away.

Clark fills Landis in on Daphne's interest in colonising heaven. It's unclear what they caused by starting the accelerator. Landis wants to fix the damage and Clark tells her Daphne won't stop until she completes her mission.

Daphne visits Roman, wanting to communicate with the ghost of her mother or perhaps simply any ghost. She has visions of her sick mother on her deathbed.

Landis gets drunk in Billy's trailer, feeling defeated and helpless in stopping LAMBDA from causing more devastation. He offers to go with her back up to the building and smash things up to keep them from causing more damage and put people in harm's way.

The townsfolk head up to the LAMBDA institute and demand answers about the recent disappearances of people that started up after these new people arrived. The two opposing parties end up in a standoff. Roman, Billy, and Landis advise Daphne to tell her men to stand down. Their standoff is broken up when they spot the smoke from the fire and the two parties agree to head out together to try to put it out.

The fire is put out but the house is still in bad shape. Meredith expresses her distrust of Daphne, which doesn't seem to phase her much. Roman notes that they all have no choice but to work together since they're all trapped and in danger together.

Billy confides in Landis that he saw Roman's power in action from the other side and was shaken by the magnitude of his power. He believes Roman himself doesn't realise how much power he has and Landis says this is something he can work with.

The LAMBDA staff load something up from the house and head back to the lab while Dan watches in secret, hidden in the trees.

Billy exists in a ghostly state while Landis takes lead in treating him after he was electrocuted. The townsfolk also struggle to try to reconcile their running Roman's mother out of town as they need him to stay and his abilities to help.

Father Dan goes into the secret passageway in the church and observes the mysterious glowing orb before crouching down to cradle it. The church-goer Carol calls out to him and it's the necessary distraction to allow him to break free from the orb's grasp and come back upstairs to his office.

Billy becomes distraught as he observes his body being treated and learns that they're thinking of giving up on him.

Doug advises Roman not to succumb to his anger over what happened with his mother, saying that killing Maggie's killer didn't bring him any further peace. He leaves but lets Roman know he'll be waiting for him at the church. Billy visits Roman, who tells him he needs to get used to being dead. Billy tells Roman that his mother used her powers for nefarious purposes and even blackmailed Billy' father which lead to the townsfolk running her out of town. Billy is left to deal with the ghost of Roman's mother while Roman leaves to confront Father Dan at the church with a gun.

Father Dan offers to take Roman to his mother's body. Roman's mother encourages Billy to let go and move on, goading him by saying that he's always liked doing things the easy way. When he considers giving up, he is transported to a mysterious circular display that glows blue. Billy approaches the orb and appears to ponder between continuing forward or not as he reaches his hands forward.

Father Dan takes Roman to the woods and shares the story that he was driving Roman's mother to Anchorage and got distracted. As a result, he crashed the car and this was how she died. Roman is tense, still holding the gun. Father Dan admits that he'd been struggling with his faith and had been drinking when he crashed the car.

Landis is watching over Bill who is in his coma and speaks to him. Billy hears her voice while touching the orb and it allows him to return to his body and wake.

Carol goes down to snoop in Father Dan's office. When she finds it empty she opens the secret passageway she saw him messing with earlier. She discovers the orb and approaches it, becoming overcome with intense sensations. When she's close enough, tendrils reach out and begin to grab hold of her, seemingly sucking the life from her.

Landis realises there is something wrong with Billy and someone else is possessing his body. She eventually realises that Ryan is the one possessing Billy and he attacks her. The real Billy returns and stops Ryan from killing Landis, speaking to her from his ghostly state saying he's coming back to her before re-entering his own body. Billy later awakens and is greeted by Landis.

Father Dan shows Roman where he buried her mother's body and encourages Roman to kill him. Roman's mother visits him and whispers into his ear before continuing on her journey. Roman informs Father Dan that his mother is ready to forgive Dan for what he's done and ready to move on. Roman says that he will not give Dan the absolution he is looking for and drops the gun at his feet before walking away.

A mysterious woman emerges from the glowing orb covered in slime. When Father Dan returns to the church and checks on the orb he is shocked to find that it now has a gaping hole in it. The woman visits the McGrath-Dufresne home and meets Isabel in the attic who simply nods at her. The woman then coughs up a slimy orb and Isabel does the same, prompting the woman to do the same once more. Isabel places her orb on the floor against a wall and tendrils begin to spread out from it. She then takes the woman's orbs and places them elsewhere.

The ghosts escalate their aggression towards the townspeople who are consequently forced to take up shelter in the church. Even Doug is brought by the local deputy since it appears to be the only somewhat safe place for everyone to gather and determine the best course of action with all the attacks.

The children display an eerie connection to the supernatural, particularly Abigail who incites further ghostly agitation by whistling a tune used in the show's theme introduction. More ghosts invade the church as they're strengthened by the power outage.

Landis confronts Billy about Roman's mother after having seen her ghost at the LAMBDA centre and he admits that he was part of a group of townsfolk that ran her out of town many years ago but claims that she is still very much alive. Roman has been living for years under the impression that his mother abandoned him to start a new life with a romantic interest she met online.

The turbines to the backup generator are clogged with animal carcasses so Billy and Roman get to work on unclogging them. Landis begins asking Roman questions about his mother and Billy dismisses the conversation and sends Roman off to check on Rev. Dan and chides Landis for potentially leaking the truth to Roman about his mother when they are in the middle of a crisis.

Many of the townsfolk begin to be haunted by former loved ones, with Sophia in particular being targeted by the ghost of her dead son Marcus.

Roman has a heart-to-heart with Rev. Dan, assuring him that he did his best when trying to save Marcus. He is later visited by Maggie, surprised to find that she hasn't passed on as he previously believed. She says that she's not alone anymore, but is connected instead. She tells him not to turn the power back on because it interferes with their ability to communicate. She elaborates by pressing her hand to his head and showing him a flashback of the townspeople running Roman's mother out of town, including Rev. Dan who professes that Roman will be better off without her. Maggie then tells Roman that his mother is dead but doesn't know the details of how and why she died.

Roman leaves Maggie and confronts Rev. Dan about his role in running his mother out of town and for lying all these years. Billy claims that Roman's mother was alive and well when she left town but Landis says that she saw Roman's mother's ghost and Dan admits that she is dead. Roman blames all of them for lying and simply using him to be their ghost hunter with no care for his own feelings.

The ghosts further terrorise the townsfolk after Abigail cuts the power to the main room in which they're being held. Sophia is lured down into a basement by the ghost of Marcus who baits her into being absorbed by a similar formation to what was previously seen in the forest. Marcus then torments Rev. Dan for being responsible for his death. Landis and Billy continue to work to try to get the backup generator running and finally manage to get it unclogged, allowing it to start running again. When the power doesn't come on right away, they begin to be surrounded by ghosts that torment them. The two profess their love to one another and brace themselves for death but the electricity finally comes back on and the ghosts are banished from the vicinity.

Billy begins to panic when he discovers that there is a power imbalance to how the generators are distributed and the circuit could blow if he doesn't fix it. He runs towards some smaller generators intent on turning them off to alleviate the pressure but an explosion sends him flying back unconscious and Landis immediately begins to perform chest compressions.

Billy McGrath informs his sister of his inability to leave the town on his boat, no matter what strategies he uses to beat the supernatural barrier. She appoints him sheriff of the town when Rodney's loved ones threaten his sister to demand that she hold a trial for Doug's murdering of Rodney. The two must work together to find her and her wife's missing daughter Abigail after she runs off to play with the ghost of a dead childhood friend.

Roman is called in to accompany the search party into the forest but he quickly warns them they must leave the forest. The lack of electricity strengthens the many ghosts present to the point that they are visible to everyone and not only Roman. Their other daughter Isabel has a supernatural encounter that leads to her biting her own finger and using her blood to draw a location in the woods.

The group leaves the following morning with Isabel leading the way to the spot she drew. There they find a strange, glowing red cocoon of unknown origins. They dig into it and are able to pull Abigail out but when they bring her home she remains silent. Her mothers are concerned but they decide to give her time. Abigail begins to hyperventilate when she looks at her own reflection in the mirror but stops after a few moments without her mothers noticing.

The cocoon is brought back to the lab for a more thorough examination. Roman informs the scientists that the ghosts were trying to protect it and Billy shares how when he touched it with his bare skin it brought about strong euphoric feelings. Roman still resents Billy for his attempt to leave him behind in the town.

Isabel gets hostile towards Abigail and the fight is broken up by Marilyn. She becomes alarmed when Isabel claims to be both Abigail and Isabel, even opening her mouth to reveal the sound of two voices at once. Marilyn is made a believer of ghosts, despite her initial skepticism, when she visits one of her patients who has died and makes a ghostly threat to kill her entire family. The mothers call Roman and Billy over to identify whether or not there are supernatural forces at work. Roman can't sense anything supernatural about Isabel but Abigail is shown to have some form of possession.

Abigail is sedated and later that night, Isabel sneaks out of her house. Roman follows her to an old home at which she punches her fist through a window.

Sophia, the town mortician, is further traumatized following the death of her son Marcus when her shower faucet begins to pour red water resembling blood. She asks handyman Doug for help and he informs her that it's just rust and he can fix it by installing some filters.

Doug is going through his own crisis as he contemplates considering suicide. He has a gun but chides himself for being too cowardly to go through with it. Rodney pays Doug a visit after Marcus' funeral at which strange things kept happening including the sound of Marcus laughing and the coffin falling over.

Roman pays a visit to Doug at the request of Maggie, his ghostly friend who is also Doug's dead daughter. Maggie wants to communicate with Doug by using Roman as the messenger but when Doug becomes angry and threatens to shoot Roman the conversation ends swiftly. The pair later meet up again, after Doug calms down. He believes Roman is communicating with Maggie based on all the specific information he has, including the location of a watch Maggie hid when she was concerned Doug would pawn it while drunk. Doug becomes distraught again over the loss of his daughter and tries to shoot himself but Maggie is able to manifest enough to stop him and tell him that he loves her.

Doug visits Roman the next day to ask him to come to a memorial he will be holding for Maggie since he never had the strength to give her a funeral. She becomes enraged when she spots Rodney and uses supernatural force to shove him into her room where she shoves him onto her bed, tears his shirt open, and he urinates while begging Maggie to stop. He repeatedly yells at her that she wanted it and it's revealed through flashbacks that Rodney had an interest in Maggie so he drugged her drink before taking her upstairs and attempted to rape her but she had a bad reaction to the drugs first and died choking on her own vomit.

Maggie carves the word "guilty" into Rodney's chest and the party-goers enter the room as the truth is revealed about Rodney's role in Maggie's death. Later, Roman and Maggie have a final goodbye in which she warns Roman that he won't be able to help all the new ghosts in his usual manner and he will need to find a different way to stop them.

The townspeople turn against Rodney and are determined to lock him up for his crimes. Roman checks on Doug, who is waiting outside the bar where the higher-ups are deciding Rodney's fate. Roman informs Doug that Maggie has found peace now from the truth being revealed and begins to walk off. Rodney emerges from the bar with the authorities further behind. He approaches Doug and asks for forgiveness but Doug shoots him instead. Doug is promptly arrested while Roman observes Rodney begin to manifest as one of the new-ghosts. As Doug is shown to be sitting in his holding cell, he smiles without remorse for avenging his daughter.

Tensions continue to run high in the town as more and more townspeople begin to encounter ghosts. Landis approaches Roman to ask for him to come to the LAMBDA institute so she can learn more about his abilities to interact with the dead. Roman isn't interested until she offers to pay him for his time so he'll be able to afford to leave the town.

A young boy name Marcus begins to exhibit strange behaviour, much to the alarm of his mother who works as the local mortician. He tells Billy McGrath's nieces about a ghostly entity called "The Whistling Man" that begins to frighten them the more they learn about him.

Roman seeks out the advice of Reverend Dan about taking payment to use his abilities and also advises Dan to check on the son of the local mortician. Later, at a church sermon, more people are in attendance than ever as they hope to find something to give them peace in the midst of all the supernatural ongoings. Marcus and his mother are present and he repeatedly laughs during the sermon before standing up and accusing Dan of being a liar. He claims there is no god, that all will be damned to hell, and then vomits. Dan visits them later on to check on how he's doing and when the two are alone, Marcus begins to recite strange phrases in Latin.

Billy's nieces become frightened when they hear the sound of listening. One of them goes to check the closet and sees a pair of glowing eyes. They run back to the bed screaming and when their mothers come in, they find Marcus hiding in the closet.

Roman goes to the LAMBDA centre and answers Landis' questions about his abilities. He also shares how the ghosts that he saw before the event are different from those that began appearing afterwards. The ones before are willing to talk to him to pass on information but the new ones are more menacing and don't want to interact.

Dan begins to believe that Marcus is possessed and believes an exorcism may be necessary to save him. He and his mother agree on him performing one while Landis asks Roman to try to communicate with one of the new spirits. Things escalate significantly on both ends as the ghost of Chloe tries to envelop Landis in a manner Roman has never seen before. Roman commands Chloe to leave. Dan continues with his exorcism while Marcus' mother assists him. The exorcism seemingly works and Marcus goes to sleep after the exhausting ordeal.

Landis has determined that the supernatural operate on a particular frequency that Roman happens to be tuned into. She believes Roman is the next step in evolution and wants him to return but Roman doesn't want to, saying he can't guarantee Landis' safety. She pays him for his time and asks what he thinks happened. He says the scientists at LAMBDA opened a can of worms and now what matters most is what they do afterwards.

Dan gives another sermon to the townspeople that is interrupted by Marcus' mother showing up distraught with a dead Marcus in her arms. She proclaims that Dan killed him and collapses, crying. Dan later prays for forgiveness alone but begins to hear rustling and supernatural whispering. He then discovers a secret passageway in his office. Inside he finds ancient books related to the supernatural and a glowing orb that he places his hands on and becomes overwhelmed by.

Six hours before the first earthquake that triggered the severe spiritual happenings in the town, Landis heads to a coffee shop to order a complicated drink. She and Roman run into each other and Landis ends up with coffee splashed all down the front of her shirt. She heads to work and begins to have a panic attack due to her claustrophobia when the elevator momentarily gets stuck. Landis is angered by her antagonistic, prank-prone subordinate co-worker Ryan, who mocks her panic in the elevator. She wants to fire him but her boss won't allow it since they need all the help they can get working at their research centre.

They activate a reactor of sorts as part of their experiment but the machine begins to malfunction. The situation is worsened further by the earthquake starting up. Some of their co-workers are locked into the room with the machine and Landis can only watch in horror as they all die with one of her closest co-workers Chloe being right up against the door and being badly burned and killed.

Following the accident, strange things begin to happen around the centre. Landis encounters a ghostly presence that grabs her while she is visiting the door that she wouldn't open during the machine malfunction because of the risks doing so would've posed to the other workers outside the room. She again senses being grabbed by one later that night while lying in bed. Ryan exhibits increasingly erratic behavior as the ghosts have been tormenting him with visions of moths, something he has a phobia of. Landis encounters a woman that passes by her while she is following Ryan up onto a deck. When he imagines the sensation of a moth crawling into his eye, he throws himself off the balcony and falls to his death.

Landis questions other workers at the company and learns from one that they sensed being tormented by Chloe while visiting the fissure room to pay her respects. Others admit to seeing or experiencing strange sensations and visions. Landis begins running experiments to try to better understand these strange happenings, despite objections and skepticism from her colleagues. Her boss has visions of being submerged in water, despite standing in his office while doing so.

Landis has further visions of ghostly spirits, including Chloe who torments her for not opening the door. An electrical shock disrupts the encounter and so she and her colleague determine that electricity can act as a deterrent. They then find Burke, their dead boos whose heart gave out from the visions of drowning. This means that Landis is now in charge at the facility. She later encounters Roman again at the same coffee shop from before. She says things are only going to get worse. She then visits Billy in the hopes that some physical comfort will ease her pain and trauma.

Much of this "Ghost Wars" episode focuses on the introduction of Billy McGrath, played by "Sons of Anarchy" actor Kim Coates. Billy's been out of town for some time but returns to it on his boat with his first mate Chewie. They feel a tremor when crossing the border back in and finds that they encountered a dead humpback whale and as they look around, there are even more dead ones rising to the water's surface.

When Billy gets back on shore, he is reunited his with his sister Marilyn, the town doctor. Marilyn and he have a tense relationship and so she initially refuses him access to visiting his nieces and asks her wife to enforce this. Billy is also reunited with Dr. Landis Barker, a young research scientist with whom he has a part casual, part romantic relationship with. Billy returns to his boat and learns that the engine is dead, Chewie already attempted to repair it but Billy is stuck in town for the time being. He heads to a bar to have a drink and shake off some stress. He encounters Rodney, one of the townsfolk that's been antagonistic towards Roman. Roman arrives in the bar and Billy is friendly towards him. He is intrigued when Roman informs him that a ghost has been following him, as Billy has had the feeling that a spirit has been nearby. Roman offers to help him with the ghost on the condition that he gets him out of town on his boat but has to leave since Rodney begins berating him for talking of ghosts.

Billy speaks with Reverend Dan about the ghostly happenings in the town and seems even more open to the likelihood that a ghostly presence is following him. Billy spends the night with Landis but the following morning is visited by his sister and an officer of the law that want to bring him in for questioning since Trevor's body washed up on shore. Trevor is the man that disappeared while on Billy's boat and the presence Billy suspects has been following him since he got back to town. Billy is brought to the morgue and is shocked to find Trevor's body appears fresh, as it should've been far more decomposed considering how many years Trevor has been missing.

Billy reaches out to Roman once more and they make a deal for Roman to help him deal with the ghost that's been haunting him. When they revisit the morgue, they find that Trevor's body is in fact just another dead whale that spirits manipulated the people that looked at it into believing they were seeing his body. Billy's first mate Chewie is injured on the boat due to further manipulation by a ghost. Billy later admits to his sister that Trevor was lost at sea because he and some other ship crew played a hazing prank on him that went wrong when a large wave hit their boat. He has been carrying around the guilt of this ever since.

Marilyn and an officer, Norm, go to investigate the previous owner of Billy's boat, whom Billy and Marilyn's father had scammed the ownership from. They find that man's dead body hanging from a tree and they argue about whether this man could be the one haunting Billy, as Roman had already stated that it's not Trevor that was haunting him. Roman seemingly helps rid Billy's boat of the ghost and helps to ready the boat so they can leave. But Billy double-crosses Roman and leaves him on the pier, saying that the town needs Roman for what he can do.

Norm nearly shoots Marilyn when he has a vision of the dead man coming at him and later, she shoots him by accident, finally beginning to believe that the ghosts of the town are real. When Billy reaches the border in the water to leave the town, he finds that he is heading back towards the town, as the supernatural force that has hold of the town has now locked him in too.

Reverend Dan (played by Vincent D'Onofrio, known to many as Wilson Fisk in Netflix's Daredevil) addresses a gathering of people in a bar. They are saying goodbye to a recently deceased person in the town. His glass of wine appears to turn to blood that overflows from his glass and then he has a vision of bugs crawling underneath his skin before piercing outward. Reverend Dan grabs a knife, intent on stabbing his hand but a young Roman Mercer (Avan Jogia) shouts at him to stop, thus saving him from self-injury.

Roman isn't much of a church-goer but he attends the Reverend's next service anyway. Perhaps he's checking in, or perhaps it's just to say goodbye. He's decided to leave the remote Alaskan town and is harassed by a cantankerous town resident Doug (Meat Loaf) before being joined by a friendly face, Maggie (Elise Gatien). Maggie is later revealed to be a ghost, that sits with Roman on the bus headed out of town before the bus gets attacked by supernatural forces and crashes. While the bus teeters on the edge of a cliffside, Maggie shouts at Roman to get up. Roman tries to help an elderly woman, Mrs. Fu, off the bus but a supernatural force appears to yank her back into the bus and out of Roman's grip. Mrs. Fu's son is another members of the police force and blames Roman for her death. The sheriff, Sam, however, is kinder to him and is apologetic for how poorly the majority of townsfolk treat Roman. Roman is without a home or belongings, having given up his place when he decided to leave the town forever. The deputy advises him to stay at his mother's old place, as it's his best option given the circumstances.

Roman returns there and Maggie joins him. She's happy he's still in town, as they wouldn't have been able to keep contact if he had left, but also informs him that the bus crash wasn't caused by an earthquake as he had originally theorised. She leaves after a while, saying she needs to check on her dad.

Roman later heads to the bar in search of some food and the bartender, Marilyn, feeds him. Through their conversation, we also learn that Roman's mother abandoned him and only sends occasional contact, mainly in the form of letters or payments to Reverend Dan. Roman has another vision of a ghostly presence while Marilyn heads to the back room.

Some construction is being done on a bridge when one of the workers has a vision of his glove being on fire. He becomes frantic and falls over the side where he is impaled on some metal rods.

Roman has visions of Mrs. Fu's ghost before visiting Sheriff Sam at the police station. He privately admits to Sam that when he tried to save Mrs. Fu there were supernatural forces that stopped him. He also said that the people who died have come back as ghosts. Sheriff Sam interprets all this as a mere aftereffect of the trauma and shock from the accident and advises Roman not to talk about ghosts. Roman is also shown a message in the fog on the glass of the room that reads "NO HOPE" after Sheriff Sam leaves.

More citizens are shown to be terrorised by visions. It's unclear if what they're seeing are actually horrors coming true, or merely manifestations in their mind. But either way, it's clear that something evil is brewing in the town. Sheriff Sam is called to the main bridge in and out of the town and finds multiple dead officers. The town morgue worker sees Mrs. Fu's corpse come alive, and another random citizen is enjoying a pint down at the pub until the dead animal skull mounted on the wall begins to weep blood into his beverage.

The increase in fear ignites a search for answers and comfort among the town citizens. More people begin to flock to the church, where Doug interrupts Reverend Dan's sermon to call Roman out again as a freak and blames the problems in the town on him. Another citizen present says that Roman's mother put a curse on the town and Reverend Dan angrily orders them to stop, saying he won't allow such things to be said in a house of God. Roman excuses himself and heads back home, having more visions of ghosts along the way and being watched from afar by another town member.

Roman speaks to Maggie at home, sharing a story about a childhood friend called Thomas. They were close but Thomas had actually died a year earlier. His peers began to call him names and those names stuck. Roman doesn't see his ability to interact with ghosts as a gift, the way Maggie does, and is carrying a heavy burden of a lifetime of being ostracised for it. Maggie tells him that when spirits want to move on but are trapped, they being to lash out at the living. Maggie wants to protect Roman but won't be able to do so against such forces.

Some local residents continue to discuss Roman at the bar. Larry, Mrs. Fu's son, tells Doug about Roman visiting the station and talking about ghosts. Marilyn warns them all not to do anything, insisting they leave Roman alone. Regardless of this, Doug gathers up some more townsfolk and corner Roman, ordering him to leave town or else they'll inflict violence on him. Roman assures them he's already been trying to leave town. Sheriff Sam arrives to the scene and takes Doug into custody, also warning the others that if anyone lays a hand on Roman they'll be joining Doug in a jail cell. He also confiscates a hanging rope from one the men, Rodney.

Sheriff Sam brings Roman to the morgue where a mysterious body has been brought in. They need to send the body to Anchorage for an autopsy because of how his heart has exploded. Roman deduces that something scared the man to death. Sheriff Sam is now willing to listen to Roman about all the strange happenings, including what happened with the bus crash. Roman thinks that everyone that died since the recent 'earthquake' can't move on and they're angry at the living for it. Roman sense a ghost(s) is near so he tells the mortician Sofia to leave with her young son. When it's just Roman and Sheriff Sam in the room, the door slams shut and they're locked inside. Sheriff Sam considers shooting at the door but Roman says he doesn't think that will do anything. Roman observes a ghost in the room and says the ghost doesn't like that he can see it. The corpse appears to be reanimated according to Sam's perspective but Roman tells him it's not really happening and it's only in his head. From Roman's perspective, Sam is only fighting air. In the process, Sheriff Sam stabs himself in the neck and bleeds out despite Roman's attempts to stop him from doing so.

The episode then reaches the opening scene of Reverend Dan nearly stabbing himself in the hand until Roman warns him not to do so. The two step outside to speak to one another but when they head back inside, everyone is screaming terrified. They are having visions of being attacked by bugs but Roman can see things as they really are. Roman tells Marty, the main ghost wreaking the havoc, that he needs to leave now. Roman's eyes glow a bright white/silver in the process. The ghost seemingly leaves but it's unclear if he's just left the bar or moved on altogether.

Some town leaders meet at Reverend Dan's church and Roman tells them that everything happening is caused by ghosts. They ponder what it is that the ghosts want and debate what to do about it. The mayor is highly skeptical on the theory of ghosts and refuses to make a public announcement on the matter or order an evacuation. She tells them that if they want to leave, they are free to do so. Roman, Reverend Dan, and the deputies plan to leave the town and tell people outside what is going on. Roman is shitting shotgun while Larry drives towards the bridge. Larry apologises to Roman about how he previously treated Roman, and says that he believes him now. When they approach the bridge, Roman becomes frantic and warns Larry to stop the car. Larry doesn't understand Roman's panic and keeps driving while Roman jumps out of the moving car. Roman is able to stop the other deputy, who was driving Reverend Dan. The pair get out of the car and are shocked when they see Larry's car seemingly disappear. Roman explain to them that the ghosts can manipulate people's minds and that the bridge is actually out. Reverend Dan commends Roman for his gift, assuring him that they would all be dead without him. The bridge is shown to be severely damaged to the viewers. Everyone in the town is trapped.
