Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S1E22 (S1 Finale) - "Beginning of the End" Recap

A new employee is being show around a Cybertek mission base that resembles a call centre but these employees are responsible for controlling Centipede soldiers. They are about to start a battle with Coulson and his team. The Centipeded soldiers are defeated (what do you expect when you're facing off against May?) and they get away.

Garrett seems un-phased by this news and begins drawing on a glass with a nail. He feels high on life after being injected with GH-325. Ward asks if they'll be joining up with Hydra and Garrett says that it is bigger than Hydra. Garrett finishes his drawing of interlocking circles and lines.

Skye's Trojan Horse was successful but FitzSimmons are not responding, though they did manage to tag the plane, allowing Skye to track it. Coulson tells the team that catching Garrett is their only way of finding FitzSimmons, if they are still alive. Coulson gives his team a pep talk as they prepare to invade Cybertek. May's not necessarily ready to change the world, but she is ready to kick some ass. FitzSimmons are still trapped in the room which has sunk at least 90 feet, according to Fitz's calculations. He's also got a broken arm and Simmons is struggling to stay optimistic.

Ward asks Raina to talk to Garrett, being concerned about his state of mind following his recent injection. Raina comes in to find him watching the Gravitonium. She admits she was sad to learn he wasn't clairvoyant because she had a question to ask. He tells her to ask anyway and she asks what she will become.

Simmons and Fitz discuss death and if anything comes after. Simmons talks about the First Law of Thermodynamics and how their energies will always be a part of living things just as they always have. Simmons then realises that they could melt the seal and blow the window in, thus enabling them to escape.

Quinn is showing the army around Cybertek and brings them to the Deathlok chair.

Outside, Coulson and Trip steal a tank and blow a hole for May and Skye to get through.

Garrett interrupts Quinn's tour, angering the General, and then Garrett turns around and rips the General's rib out before stabbing him with it. He says it is the beginning of the end. Ward is horrified and confronts Raina who is leaving with Quinn and the Gravitonium. Ward wants to know what she said to him and Raina says that Garrett is "connecting now" and agrees with him while Ward is merely following him. Raina says they need Skye, which is all Ward ever wanted, saying that she will be a part of the evolution to come. Ward says that Skye detests him and thinks he's a monster. She asks him if that is his true nature or simply what Garrett made him to be. Ward doesn't know. Raina points out that Skye's parents are proof of there being darkness inside her and perhaps someday the two of them could be monsters together.

Centipede soldiers attack the tank containing Coulson and Trip while May and Skye get inside the centre, threatening the people with a bomb. This leads the "dealer" to switch the soldiers to "default directive," which is to protect Garrett. This was part of the plan, allowing Coulson to be led right to him.

Skye calls Garrett from Deathlok's phone to gloat, but the turns around and tells her FitzSimmons are dead, and she angrily hangs up. He then order Ward, who had been begging for orders, to get Skye.

FitzSimmons are preparing to blow the window. Fitz tells Simmons there's only one mask that'll give enough air to get to the surface. He's insisting that she take it, saying he couldn't live if she didn't take it. She gets angry about his making her do it, saying he's her best friend in the world. He confesses that she's more than that to him and pleads to her to let him prove it. She becomes emotional but he puts the mask on her and blows the window. She grabs hold of him and swims to the surface, screaming for help upon reaching it. Who then arrives to pull her out? NICK FURY.

Simmons wakes in a decompression chamber and Fury tells her Fitz is being tended to, as his brain was without oxygen for a while. Fury was looking for Coulson when he found them and asks if she has anything that could help him find him.

Ward heads into the call centre and begins taunting Skye. She angrily tells him that Fitz was a hero for wanting to believe in Ward. She tells Ward that Garrett is the evil one, while he is simply weak. Skye says she has a weapon better than the bomb that will destroy him and who comes flying through to attack? Melinda freaking May, of course! Cue a brilliant fight between the two that even includes power tools. It's one of the best brawls of the entire season and then May literally staples Ward to the floor and knocks him out.

Coulson tracks down Garrett, who sends him flying and landing at the feet of Nick Fury. Garrett doesn't see that Fury is there but does give Coulson the giant weapon he had attempted to kill Loki with in The Avengers. Coulson is able to take out the Centipede soldiers but Garrett simply won't go down. Fury reveals himself and his gun isn't able to help much either. Garrett monologues about being "blood brothers" with Coulson and Fury notes that Coulson didn't tell him Garrett had gone that crazy. Fury gets annoyed by Garrett's getting his inspiring speech wrong and Garrett orders Deathlok to shoot his arm-gun at Fury and Coulson. Unfortunately, Skye has gotten the Cybertek call-guy to the "incentives program," which has been mentioned more than once in this episode: it's the family members of the Cybertek employees held captive under threat of violence. She finds the "ace in the hole" - Ace Peterson. She asks for a message to prove he is safe and sends it to Mike's eye feed through her phone. Mike reads the message, "Dad, what are we? We are a team." Peterson then shoots his arm-gun at Garrett and stomps him out.

Garrett is packed up into a coffin, the Cybertek soldiers are sent to have the serum and eye-bombs removed. Coulson tells Ward that Fitz may never be the same. "You devoted your entire life to a deranged narcissist who never gave a damn about anyone. And now he's dead. You've got the rest of your life to wrestle with the question, 'Who are you without him?'"

Skye speaks with Mike, who is watching Ace from afar. He doesn't want Mike to see him as a murderer and simply wants to make amends for all that he has done.

Garrett breaks free from his coffin and pulls himself up onto the Deathlok chair. HE screams as he is rebuilt, but upon completion, he smiles and says, "There's a reason why they say, 'Cut off the head.'" He's about to say he'll be unstoppable but then Coulson blasts him with the 0-8-4.

Back on the Bus, Coulson scolds Fury for putting him through TAHITI and Fury says May had everything under control and that guys like Coulson were the heart of S.H.I.E.L.D. But now, he will be the head. He gives Coulson a toolbox to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. from scratch, taking his time to do it right, and there's no one else he trusts more to do this. He tells Coulson that the way to do it is however he likes, being the new Director. Fury will be dropping off the radar, but he'll still be "everywhere."

The team is reunited with Simmons and she tells him that Fitz is alive, not elaborating any further. They are at another secret base, which was in the Coulson's new toolbox and they meet another Agent Koening, but this one is named Billy. He welcomes them to "The Playground," and says everyone will get lanyards on a case-by-case basis. He asks Coulson where he would like to start.

Raina heads down a hallway to meet someone in an otherwise empty room. She says "I know you thought you'd never see me again, but I found your daughter." She hands the man a photograph of Skye, and he picks it up, only allowing us to see the figure's bloody arm. It's unclear whose blood it is.

That night, Coulson can't sleep so he gets up and begins carving a large map of circles and lines onto a wall, much like the one we saw Garrett carving onto glass.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return for Season 2 in Autumn 2014 on ABC on Tuesdays at 9PM! Also be sure to check out Marvel's Agent Carter, a new series that will see the brilliant Hayley Atwell back in action as Peggy Carter!

Agents of SHIELD S1E21 - "Ragtag" Recap

The episode begins with a flashback fifteen years ago to a juvenile secure unit in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Garrett visits Ward to recruit him after learning about his impressive strength and hand-eye coordination. Ward had apparently set his house on fire, not knowing that his brother was inside. He tells Ward that his parents are on the way with their lawyer, fully intending to charge him with murder while his older brother plans to petition to have him tried as an adult. Ward says he doesn't know how he can trust him and Garrett tells him that's good and that he shouldn't trust anyone ever.

The team sees on the news that Deathlok recently killed a Colombia drug lord but they have no idea why. Coulson explains to the team that Cybertek is the common thread connecting everything they have been dealing with. Skye's trojan horse has been slowly mapping out all the systems Garrett and his minions have been linking up to. May says they will go into one of the facilities with a server on it since Skye needs plug her hard drive in.

Fitz still wants to believe in Ward, insisting soemthing must have happened in order for him to betray them, even going so far as to consider the possibility of one of those eye monitors. May and Coulson are the ones to go undercover as former SHIELD scientists and visit a Cybertek facility. Skye hacks into the system and tells May and Coulson to head to the fourth floor where there is an extra reinforced room that likely contains the mainframe. When Coulson and May break in, they find that there isn't an actual mainframe because everything is on paper in filing cabinets.

Raina speaks with Deathlok/Mike and reveals that she is looking at Skye's DNA, having developed a fascination with her for a reason as yet to be explained.

Coulson and May find Mike's folder and learn that Garrett was patient zero in the Deathlok project. They let the team know to prepare for a large file transfer and when they ask how large, an entire filing cabinet is thrown from the fourth story window. The team loads that up and then Tripp shoots a zip line into the building which Coulson and May come sliding down on.

Ward and Garrett are arguing, with Garrett telling Ward he is and always has played the victim. He then begins to suffer from chest pains and Ward brings him to medical, where he begins hooking some metal on his torso to some cables.

May and Skye have a private moment in which Skye wishes she could be as zen as May but May assures her that she does feel a tremendous amount of anger but it is stowed away and will be unleashed when the time comes to take Ward down.

Garrett is dying, albeit slowly, and needs the GH325 in order to heal himself. Raina tells Ward a story she heard about monsters tearing a village apart trying to find a baby (Skye) and what was particularly interesting about it was that the monsters were the baby's parents.

The flashbacks of Ward and Garrett continue throughout the episode. Following the breakout, Garrett left Ward in the woods with his dog and told him to try to survive for a few weeks. He ended up leaving him there for six months, as he was called away on assignment. When Garrett and returns and finds Ward alive with a whole camp set up, he begins to teach him how to shoot.

Raina is able to provide Garrett with a sample of GH325 she has synthesised. Fitz and Simmons track the Bus down to an air field in Santa Maria but Coulson tells them to wait for them and keep their distance from it until they arrive. They disobeyed this order and boarded the Bus where they were quickly caught by Ward and Garrett. Fitz lets out a pulse of electricity that causes problems for Garrett's circuitry. Fitz pleads with Ward to just let Garrett die.

Young Ward had been left in the woods with occasional visits from Garrett for several years until he was tough enough to be recruited into HYDRA. Garrett eventually tells him he has been accepted into SHIELD and warns him he cannot get attached to anyone if he expects to be successful as an agent of HYDRA within SHIELD. He then tells him to kill his dog Buddy before they will leave the woods for good.

In present day, Garrett tasks Ward with killing Fitz and Simmons, saying the same words he had when telling him to kill Buddy. "That's not a weakness, is it?" Ward leaves Raina alone with Garrett, who shows her his insides that reveal he has been injected with the Centipede serum but he is too far gone now. He tells Raina to give him the GH325. Raina injects the GH325 into Garrett's body and he is restored with superhuman abilities.

Fitz and Simmons escape their guards and run into a room, locking the door behind them. Fitz pleads with Ward, insisting he is a good person. In a flashback, we see Ward shoot his gun to make Buddy go running off. It is then implied that he or someone shot Buddy from afar with a sniper rifle. Ward triggers the room that Fitz and Simmons are in to be dropped into the ocean but I doubt that they're dead.

The team later breaks into a facility and find many more Centipede soldiers. Garrett had ordered Deathlok to take out enemies of the American government in order to win them over and get commissioned to produce more super-soldiers.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S1E19 - "The Only Light in the Darkness" Recap

Marcus Daniels (Blackout) comes off a boat and shuts lights off that he passes. He asks a fisherman for a ride but kills him and takes his truck when the man refuses.

Ward is patched up by his team and lies, saying that Hydra took over the Fridge, stealing artefacts and freeing inmates. He tells them he killed Garrett before escaping and tries to segway into getting access to the hard drive, but Coulson instead tasks Skye with looking into the inmates now on the loose. Once they realise Blackout is on the loose, Coulson is determined for them to go after him. Koening doesn't want them to leave and tells them they must first go through "orientation," an incredibly high-tech lie detector test. This machine was designed by Nick Fury with the intent that not even Black Widow would be able to beat it.

Through this "orientation," we begin learning more about the team members. Skye's real name isn't "Skye"; she gave it to herself at the orphanage. Trip's grandfather was a Howling Commando. Fitz would want Simmons with him on a desert island whereas Simmons says she would have the Tardis. Ward struggles with the test and is only able to deflect suspicion by admitting his feelings for Skye.

Ward runs into Fitz and advises him to tell Simmons how he really feels about her but Fitz claims to not understand what he means. May and Coulson end up in another argument and he tells her to either follow his orders or leave. Coulson tells the team that Blackout was obsessed with a girl named Audrey, whom they must now track down and protect. They get to her (hello, Amy Acker!) and shine lights on Blackout in an attempt to keep him at bay. He ends up revealing that the experiments performed on him in the Fridge made him stronger. He unleashes more of his powers to knock out Fitz's drones and send Coulson and Fitz flying back.

Skye is sitting with Koening in his office, where she figures out that their lanyards are a tool for him to keep track of them. She then proposes they hack the NSA to get surveillance footags from the Fridge in order to track down the escapees. Ward comes in and supports Skye's idea before again trying to get to the hard drive again. Koening appears suspicious of this and sends Skye off to hack the NSA.

Simmons and Trip are telling Audrey they're CIA but she knows they're actually from S.H.I.E.L.D. She tells them how six years prior, Blackout was stalking her but Coulson swooped in and saved her. Audrey believes that Coulson died in the line of duty when in fact he's listening in on the conversation from the other room. Fitz tells Coulson he might have a way to stop Blackout but they'll need to use Audrey to lure him out.

Ward visits May, with a gun ready to draw on her but refrains from doing so when he learns that May is preparing to leave, having already packed a bag. She says that Coulson hasn't been able to see past her deception and leaves Providence. Ward heads back to Koening's office, where images are coming in from the NSA satellites and they will be clear soon. Ward sinisterly closes the door.

Trip and Simmons are in a theatre with Audrey, prepping her to play cello to bait Blackout. Fitz intends to use Bruce-Banner-developed-technology to take Blackout down. Ward visits Skye and tells her Koening is trying to contact NATO. At the moment, the only thing she can see are images of an empty roof. Ward tells Skye that May has left and they begin discussing their relationship.

Coulson tells Fitz he doesn't want to hurt Audrey again, which is why he is refraining from telling her he is actually alive. Ward tells Skye how she encourages him to open up when he has always kept them in check. He says there are things about him that she wouldn't like. He confesses that he lied to her; his older brother didn't beat up his younger brother but instead made Ward do it. He says he was afraid of him and their parents were only worse. He tells Skye he isn't a good man and when she insists that he is, he kisses her. She gets some blood on her hand and he pulls away, telling her it's one of his wounds that he needs to clean up. Skye locates Koening's tablet and tracks his lanyard, opting to go after him.

Blackout reaches Audrey and tells her she's the only one that can save him. She says nothing but instead keeps playing. Ward returns and finds Skye is gone. She has tracked Koening's lanyard to a supply closet and a coin drops when she opens it. She heads inside, looks up, and finds his bloody body on the grate. She realises Ward must have killed Koening.

Trip, Fitz, and Simmons begin trying to use their devices on Blackout but he resists them. Coulson then comes out and with his help, the team are able to overload Blackout, causing him to explode.

Skye is in a bathroom, crying, trying to re-collect her thoughts. She tells herself that Ward is Hydra and looks through the cabinets before honing in on a picture on the wall.

Coulson goes over to check on Audrey and kisses her forehead, saying she is okay and he's still there for her. He runs off before she opens her eyes to see Simmons standing over her.

Ward opens the closet door and the coin drops (it was a device set up to check whether anyone had gone inside). Skye appears behind him and says she was scared by the kiss and his opening up but isn't scared anymore and leans in to kiss him again. She tells him she wants this and he says he wants to stay there with her and imagine that the world outside doesn't exist. He tells her they got word from Fitz that they're needed and they leave hand in hand to the hanger.

Coulson tells Fitz he'll tell Audrey the truth someday, when there's a chance she'll understand. He says that he needs to make things right with May, as he can't expect Audrey to forgive him if he can't forgive May. Simmons comes in and asks Fitz if he has a problem with Trip and Fitz says that he simply hates change. They arrive back to Providence where they find that the Bus is gone, along with Ward and Skye.

Ward and Skye are in the air and Skye realises that Ward needs her to decrypt the hard drives. He tells her that she in charge. Meanwhile, May is walking down a road in Ontario and is picked up by her mother (presumably). She is annoyed that May didn't thank her immediately for her help, but then offers her some contacts, since her agency hasn't fallen apart. She says that May wasn't the only one looking and asks if she intends to kill the person whose contact info she has just offered up. May says no and that she just wants to talk. The woman is pleased, saying she has always liked Maria.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S1E18 - "Providence" Recap

Raina sits in her cell folding origami and adds her latest one to her shelf with the others. She hears gunfire and noises and Ward comes in to deliver a present complete with a ribbon. She opens it and finds a flower dress inside.

Coulson watches the news which is covering S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fall. Skye comes and and tells him she has compiled a list of three secure bases. He wants and intends to continue the fight against Hydra.

Ward takes Rain to a barber shop where she meets John Garrett who introduces himself as the Clairvoyant. He explains that he is not actually "clairvoyant" and she is saddened to learn of his being a fraud. He invites her to sit in a barber chair, welcomes her to Hydra, and triggers a mechanism that lowers her below the floor.

FitzSimmons are working on much-needed repairs to the Bus while Trip assists them. Skye tells Coulson that S.H.I.E.L.D. has taken back the Cube. Coulson receives a transmission from Glen Talbot, who informs him he'll be sending in a peacekeeping force that will just get the lay of the land. After the transmission, Coulson says that this isn't good. He expects they'll try to shut down what's left of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson initiates Odyssey, saying Fitz needs to finish the repairs so they can get out. May tells Coulson she'll have the wheels up in ten and Trip asks to join them. Coulson doesn't trust him but Simmons speaks on his behalf. Coulson relents but tells Simmons that Trip is her responsibility.

Coulson talks stealth capabilities with Fitz, supplies with Simmons, and learns from Trip that a fuel line is busted but he is working to repair it. Skye tells Coulson they have Internet. He tasks her with finding all information about them and erasing it, saying they need to vanish. Skye asks if she's sure since it won't be able to be undone. She enquires about Ward and tells her to call him.

Skye tells Ward about the identity wipe and he's relatively unphased. They flirt before they end the call and she promises to keep him posted. Garrett and Ward argue about Skye and how she was not part of the plan. Ward had been tasked with retrieving information on Coulson's return from the dead but the plan was complicated when Coulson didn't know anything about it. Garrett tells Rain they're restarting phase 3 and shows her several corpses he has been experimenting on. He gives her some vials he took from the Guest House for her to test and Ward gives her the information he took from the Bus. Ward and Garrett begin preparing to raid the Fridge.

Skye gives Coulson everyone's badges and Coulson puts them in a safe behind the picture frame behind his desk. Skye then notes that there are lights on his badge and they see that they might be coordinates. Coulson thinks they are from Nick Fury. The coordinates are somewhere in the Canadian wilderness. Simmons and Trip wonder if this is a trip but Coulson gives a speech about Fury, Shield, the Bus, and says he is certain of this, though anyone who wishes to leave is welcome to grab a chute and do so.

Raina admits to Ward that she was disappointed about the Clairvoyant not being actually clairvoyant since there was a question she wanted to ask. Ward tells her he's known Garrett since he was a teenager. Ward tells her how he saved Fitz to gain trust, romanced May to neutralise the biggest threat, and played the role of the loner in order to get Coulson to pursue him. Ward admits that he owes Coulson something but he owes Garrett everything.

May visits Coulson and says she needs to confiscate his weapon, questioning Coulson's blind faith in Fury. She says this might be from Hydra if they had been involved in his surgery. She admits that someone else was in charge of Coulson's procedure but only Fury knows who it is. Coulson refuses to surrender his weapon and orders May out.

Fitz, Simmons, and Trip discuss Coulson. Fitz wants to stick to Coulson's plan but Trip and Simmons are more sceptical. Garrett and Ward arrive at the Fridge but the security won't let them inside without Hand. A helicopter comes up and begins firing at them. The security then decide to let them in and they all go into the elevator. Ward shoots the guards and leads the team. Garret reveals that the Slingshot program is a hoax, saying that the technology is actually kept in a room called the Toy Store. Garrett pulls out a plasma gun they first found in Peru.

The Bus lands in Canada and Coulson tells the team that it's up to them whether or not they want to follow him, which they all end up doing. Garrett uses the plasma gun to free prisoners in the Ice Box, hoping that they'll keep Coulson busy. Ward takes the plasma gun to shoot a hole into the floor of what was supposed to be Fridge's bottom floor, revealing something beneath it.

Coulson and the team have yet to find anything and even Fitz is starting to wonder if they came for nothing. Skye asks May what she was spying for Fury and May says that doctors were worried he might be unstable following the procedure. She notes that he was fine until today. The team reaches the coordinates and begin searching the area. Coulson says they're not going back until they find what they're looking for. Plus, they are out of fuel, leaving no other option but to find what is here. Coulson becomes emotional monologuing. He throws the badge in a fit and it's shot out of the air by an automated turret. The team all take cover and Coulson approaches the turret. It tells him to identify himself and when he does, he is welcomed and a hidden passage opens.

Raina tells Garrett and Ward that there's a problem with the hard drive. Skye had programmed it to erase itself if anyone other than her attempted to access it. Back in the passage, the team meats Agent Koening, who tells them they have entered a secret base called Providence. He tells them that Agent Fury is dead and the Fridge has fallen. Skye panics and calls Ward, visibly relieved to hear his voice.

Koening pulls Coulson into his office to speak privately. Koening says that he has lived there in isolation since the Chitauri invasion of New York. Koening tells Coulson that Fury is actually alive, but they are under direct orders to not tell anyone else, including the rest of his team. Coulson's not comfortable keeping secrets but Koening stresses that these are Fury's orders. Coulson reluctantly agrees.

Ward has now learned about the secret base but also that Fury is dead. Garrett changes clothes and we see some metal on his chest. Garrett sends Ward to get the password for the hard drive and tells him to kill the team but bring the girl back. They've worked out a story and Garrett begins beating Ward as part of their cover. Ward arrives at Providence, bloody and bruised. Skye meets him at the entrance.

Finally, Quinn greet Garrett, furious about his assets being frozen and all the other mistreatment he has endured. His life is now in shambles since meeting Garrett and aligning himself with a non-Clairvoyant. Garrett tells him he has a gift and brings him over to a container holding his gravitonium. Quinn thanks him.
