Vikings S05E01: The Departed Recap

Ragnar is gone, but the Vikings remain. Welcome to Season 5! If Alex Høgh Andersen can be believed, its going to be a great one. If you haven't checked out our interview with Alex, you can find it here. Let's get started.

Bjorn and his brothers put Sigurd to rest. His death will impact this entire season. The brothers still look a little shell shocked that their own brother Ivar was the one who killed him. The entire village looks at Ivar with distaste, and he manages a single tear for Sigurd.

Ivar meets with his brothers and leaders of the army. He claims that he didn't mean to kill Sigurd, but he taunted him until he had no choice but to kill him. He spoke lies, claiming that Ivar wasn't a real man. Ivar never meant to kill his brother, but he didn't have a choice and he is sorry. He crawls from his brothers. Bjorn warns the others that they cannot leave Ivar in charge of the large army. He plans to pursue his own destiny with Halfdan. They ask if he plans to go to Kattegat, but he has no time. Lagetha will be advised of the situation, Bjorn will return to Kattegat only when he has finished his journey if the gods permit it.

In England, Bishop Heahmund along with his men find the remains of King Ecbert's kingdom. Heahumund orders that they search out Ecbert's body.

Bjorn prepares to set sail. Harald asks Halfdan is sure he wishes to leave. They've always shared a vision. Halfdan corrects him. He doesn't wish to be the King's brother, he wishes to travel the world. His brother will miss him, but no matter where he goes, Halfdan promises to cover his back. Harald watches as his brother leaves with Bjorn.

Heahmund walks through the wrecked city. It is utterly destroyed. The king's bod is finally located in a vat of water. Heahmund plans to clean and restore the city, and bring back the people.

Ivar seeks out Floki. Floki is building a one man boat, and let the Gods lead him. Ivar doesn't want him to go, his brothers are too soft to help against the Christians. Ivar tells him that his brother's don't believe he didn't mean to kill Sigurd, and without Floki he will be lonely. Floki feels for him, but with Helga gone, there is nothing left for him. Ivar knows his heart is broken, but Floki knows it will repare. He holds Ivar as he cries, assuring him that he does not need him.

Bjorn takes joy in their leaving, as the remaining army watches.

Heahmund performs a funeral for Ecbert, praying for their king. The single remaining monk returns, and tells Heahmund what little he knows. He was the scribe of the church, and he witnessed the treaty between the Vikings and Ecbert. Heahmund wishes that Ecbert hadn't given away any of their lands even when his life was on the line, but the scribe tells Heahmund that he didn't, that he couldn't as they weren't his to give. Before Ecbert sent his family away, he renounced his crown, and gave it to his son prince Aethelwulf. Aethelwulf is king, and the grant of land is worthless.

King Aethelwulf paddles in a boat. They arrive at a small village. Judith is tending to Alfred with leeches. He looks awful, and she's not sure if he is dying. Aethelwulf believes that they are being punished for their vanity. He believes that there is no other way to understand what is happening to them. She doesn't believe that Alfred should have to die for their sins, for her sins. Aethelwulf prays that God is shows them mercy once more and ends the misery of all of those around them.

Floki continues his plans to leave. He doesn't want to be stopped, he just wants to leave. He has no plan for his destination, but he will keep the sons of Ragnar in his heart. The brothers each say their goodbyes. Ubbe and Hvitserk have nothing but good words, Ivar lovingly calls him a coward, and Floki tells him to stand up and say it to his face. Floki sets out, but Ivar has given him the means to guide himself, he doesn't want him to be lost. In a hail of chants, Floki rows out to his destiny.

Heahmund prays to Ecbert that he will help them defeat the Vikings, that all the Pagans will be destroyed. The people return as his prayer comes to a conclusion. Heahmund tells the people to be unafraid, Christ is here. The people are thankful.

Ubbe thinks that they should settle the lands that they got in the treaty. Ivar thinks that they shouldn't dissolve their army, that they should make a strong hold in the North, and make a fortress in York. They can have an Empire there. Its a tactical move. The lands are in the center of the country, and it makes them vulnerable, York gives them power and freedom. Hvitserk agrees with Ivar's thinking, much to Ubbe's dismay.

Floki finds Ivar's gift, and throws it into the sea. Floki intends to keep to his plan and leave himself at the mercy of the Gods.

Heahmund is asked to the church, there is a lady waiting for him. Aethelkith prays for everyone. Heahmund asks if she will take mass at his hands, and she is honored. The act is sensual at his hands. Heahmund walks through the thorns and asks to be cleanse of his sins.

The brothers look at York, seeing it ripe for the picking. Ivar wants to attack now, but Ubbe suggesting waiting. Their father told them that Saint days were the best time to attack, everyone would either be at Church or drunk. They set out to find the perfect day. The brother grab a pair of children. Ivar crawls to their captives, telling them that if they tell him the truth no harm will come to them, he wants to know the next Saint day. In three days it will be Ascension Day.

Ubbe slips into the walls of York, and let the others in. The Vikings take the city with little effort. Just as Ragnar had told them, most were in the church, and its a slaughter. Ubbe looks on in horror as all the defenseless people are killed. He holds a nun as she dies of her own afflicted wounds. Ivar taunts the Bishop, stealing one's crucifix. The church is filled with the dead, as a lone child cries. Ivar kills the Bishop, but making him ingested a melted down cross. He calls for his horse, and sends the animal out dragging the body.

Ivar celebrates their victory. Ubbe slips further away from Ivar's cruelty.

Guthrum trains with Torvi, and he's come along way. His father was a powerful man, and he would make him proud, Torvi tells him. The horns sound, ships are near, she rushes to warn Lagetha who their visitor is. Harald has arrived in Kattegat. He and his men head straight to Lagetha, but they aren't exactly welcomed. She allows his approach. He tells her that the Great Army succeeded. The Kings are dead, and they have been given granted lands. Lagetha asks after her son. He isn't dead, only busy. Sigurd is dead by Ivar's hand, but Bjorn has headed to the Mediterranean. Lagetha wonders why Harald has come. He claims he only came because Bjorn was busy. Lagetha calls out his failed assassination attempt. Harald never believed he was a wise man, but he hands over his sword to Lagetha, happy to die if thats her wish. He tells her to strike, taunts her to.

Floki sits in the middle of the ocean, searching for direction.

Heahmund takes out his anger on an animal carcass, when he's told of the Vikings recently sacking in York and desecrating of the Bishop.

Lagetha asks a bound Harald why she should keep him after this confession. She has a reason, but he claims there is none. He did all he did for a woman, he wanted to be worthy of her, he tried to take her kingdom because of that. Lagetha asks what has changed. The woman lied. She didn't wait for him, and married another, so he killed her. He doesn't desire her kingdom any longer, and offers her an alliance. She points out he is in no position. Harald points out that he is still a king, and her son may be away for a long time. She may not be able to trust the other sons of Ragnar. Lagetha has her way with the bound Harald, riding away her frustrations, with him helpless to do anything.

Men block Ubbe and Hvitserk from seeing their brother. They tell Ubbe that they will ask if Ivar will see them, but Ubbe warns them that they will loose their tongues if they stand in their way. Ubbe wants to know why Ivar has a bodyguard. He claims he needs one, because he's crippled. Its more than that, Ubbe isn't happy with the way Ivar is running things. He doesn't consult his brothers about his plans, acting as the long leader of the Army. Ivar wants to be their equal, but he has to do better. They accept him as he is, but Ivar doesn't believe them. Ubbe tells Ivar that there is a large Saxon force on their way, but Ivar wasn't aware, too wrapped up in himself. His tattoo continues as his brothers leave.

The women await to see why Harald acted against them. Lagetha tells them that he was in love and now he's not. He wants to offer them an alliance and marriage. Astrid doesn't think that Lagetha should consider the offer. Torvi thinks that she should consider it. Astrid oversteps when she tells Lagetha that she cannot set him free, and Lagetha makes it clear she will make her own decisions. Astrid walks out, and is quickly grabbed by a trio of men, and kidnapped. Harald is already free, and he has Astrid on his ship. They boat leaves with no fanfare. The horn sounds, and Lagetha is informed that Harald is gone. Lagetha sees that Astrid is gone too. On the ship, Astrid asks why kidnap her. Harald still intends to become King of all of Norway. He needs a Queen, someone to breed with. Astrid laughs at his offer. Lagetha has been good to her. Harald offers her power, and excitement.

Heahmund and his men have arrived at York. The Vikings have been busy fortifying the city. The town is well defended and they may not be strong enough yet to attack. Heahmund wishes that Aethelwulf was in the field with them. His presence could inspire. But Aethelwulf is busy in his hovel with Judith. She asks what they should do about Alfred, and he wonders why its always about Alfred. Judith admits that the boy is dying. Aethelwulf notices that Alfred is gone. He wades in the water towards a hooded figure. He reaches for it, and falls into the water as Judith and Aethelwulf watch. Judith screams for him to be saved as Aethelwulf runs to him, and pulls him from the water. Alfred tells them that they must go to York, that his father told him.

Floki remains miserable in the sea. He thinks he has been abandoned. He releases the Raven, and tells the bird to not come back.

Aethelwulf and his people head to York.

Torvi asks Lagetha why Harald kidnapped Astrid. Lagetha knows that Harald didn't abandon his dream. He still wishes to be king, and he will come to their shores eventually with men. Torvi doesn't think that Astrid will side with Harald, but Lagetha isn't so sure.

Harald asks Astrid what she's decided. She still hasn't said no, but she isn't ready yet. Harald still thinks she will side with him.

Aethelwulf's men have arrived, and Heahmund's forces are happy to see them. Aethelwulf and Heahmund finally come face to face. He introduces the Bishop to his wife, and they are brought into camp. He notes Judith's bravery, but she claims she had nothing better to do at home, and deserves vengeance as well. Around the table. Heahmund makes small talk before getting down to business. The Vikings have been fortifying York. But there is good news, they haven't fortified the Roman walls. Heahmund thinks that they should give the army time to mesh and grow, and ensure that the wall sections truly remain unguarded.

In the middle of a storm, Floki sings, and when the storm has ended. Floki finds himself on land. He has reached a beach covered in dark rocky sand. He finds a puddle of clean water and greedily slurps it down. The raven caws nearby. He finds a cave and builds a fire to warm himself. In the morning he goes to explore this new land and to search for food. He climbs high up a cliff, and falls asleep. When he awakens he looks over the land, and thanks Njord for the sights.

Torvi watches Guthrum train. Margrethe asks her what she thinks of Lagetha's mistake, she thinks that Lagetha put them in danger, and that her control may be a solid as they thought.

Floki continues to walk the land, falls on the rock covered stones. Later he finds a waterfall and he heads straight for it. The water looks as if it is rising, rather than falling. He believes himself to be in Asgard.

Ubbe and Hvitserk find Ivar testing out some equipment. He has some fancy leg braces, which allow him to walk for the first time ever. On his feet, Ivar is filled with more confidence then ever. He's no longer held back by his handicap, and there will really be no stopping him now.

Tonight's code word is Valhalla. You can find details for our Vikings Drinking Horn here.

Haven S5E13 - "Chosen" Recap

Charlotte is determined to see Mara and bring her back through a thinny which will hopefully save Audrey and Haven. Charlotte knows that Mara is dangerous and hopes to take her away and hopefully undo the damage she has done. As for Dwight, he's still leaking aether and it's infecting people into having troubles. He even gives a female customer who had complained to him, the ability to explode things (and people) that she touches. This also triggers a locking trouble, leading to some officers getting locked into a room as the lock, doorknob, and hinges all disappear.

Duke is overwhelmed by his lack of control so he decides to go see Charlotte and ask for help. He tells her about the aether tears and she agrees to do some tests. When he removes his shirt, it's revealed that there are black handprints on his back, though Charlotte doesn't tell him about this.

Nathan and Audrey stop for coffee but Nathan leaves a cold and sick Audrey in the car while he retrieves the drinks, leaving Mara opportunity to hop into the driver's seat with a gun pointed at Audrey. Mara refuses to see Charlotte but has a message to be delivered; Mara will go into a thinny but only if her mother doesn't come with her. She adds that she has turned Duke into a massive ticking time bomb of a weapon and unless Mara gets her wish, Duke will explode. Also, if Mara is killed, Duke will still explode.

The locking trouble also causes several school children to get trapped inside a boat that begins to sink. Audrey delivers Mara's message to Charlotte and Duke overhears the fact that him exploding will release the worst troubles onto Haven. This causes him to run away and Charlotte says that she will let Duke explode before she lets Mara run off alone. However, Charlotte proposes a different idea entirely: if Audrey re-combines with Mara, perhaps her goodness will fix Mara's evil ways.

Duke has run off to see Vince and Dave and wants to know where the open thinny is. He threatens them into telling him, while Dwight and Nathan struggle to cope with the sinking ship, particularly since half of Haven PD is still locked up at the station due to the trouble. Charlotte and Audrey relay the news to Nathan about Audrey re-merging with Mara. Audrey has already agreed to do it and despite the fact that Nathan doesn't want her to do it, he eventually agrees to let her make her own choice. He promises that he will get her back and implores her to keep fighting to stay alive once she has re-merged with Mara. Before leaving with Charlotte to find Mara, Audrey is able to talk the locking-trouble man down and save the kids trapped on the boat.

Duke calls Mara up to tell her about the open thinny. He summons her to the boat where he has chained himself up (at her request) before she comes in to see him. He says he will take her to the open thinny under the condition that he will go into it with her so he won't explode. She agrees to the terms, not knowing that Duke's true plan is to kill Mara at the thinny and go in without her.

As for Vince and Dave, they go into the woods following the lead from one of Dave's visions. They discover a rock with Croatoan carved in it. Though there's still not a whole lot of explanation offered up, this is presumably setting up for a plot that will play out in the second half/arc of season five.

Before Duke can enact his plan to kill Mara, Charlotte and Audrey arrive. It's revealed that Mara's anger towards her mother is because she blames her for her father's death. Charlotte tries to talk her down, apologising for the last 660 years. Charlotte implores Mara to let her return Audrey to Mara, or else she will be angry forever.

Eventually, Audrey and Mara are recombined in an explosion and only Audrey is left intact. Charlotte decided to combine Mara into Audrey instead of the other way around because Mara was too far gone into her grief. Charlotte tells Duke that Mara said that she turned him off, and Nathan revels in the fact that he can feel Audrey again.

But the happy moment is short-lived, as a dark cloud begins to form. Duke then declares he can't see and his eyes have turned black. Now that Mara is dead, Duke the time bomb is going to be triggered. Dwight finds that he is unable to leave town when he reaches the edge. Vince and Dave look at the large cloud surrounding Haven from afar, while Duke has a seizure before countless aether balls flood out from his eyes and fly into Haven, striking anyone and everyone they come across. Everyone is now going to be troubled.

Haven season 5 (part 2) will return to Syfy in 2015.

Haven S5E12 - "Chemistry" Recap

Duke's not in the mood to cuddle. He tells Mara he has a theory about where to find the aether and leaves to go hunt for it, leaving Mara to do as she pleases in the cabin. Meanwhile, Vince is still certain that Charlotte is hiding something and is alarmed to learn that she has been working with aether and vows to find a way to prove Charlotte is not how she seems. Nathan's more so concerned for Audrey and her deteriorating health. Her body temperature is low enough that she should be hypothermic. While Audrey is in for a check-up and Charlotte has stepped out to get some B12 shots, Vince comes in to try to steal some proof against Charlotte and finds her folder on all of Audrey's precious incarnations, a revelation that shocks Audrey. Vince had also already taken a DNA sample of Charlotte and sent it to Gloria for analysis. Audrey agrees to team up with Vince to try to uncover the truth and admits to Nathan the truth about her condition.

Duke gets a call from Mara and hears her being attacked so he hurries back to the cabin where he finds her gone and the place torn up. Duke finds some DNA on the scene from Kirk, the oxygen-sucking-out man. Nathan is also on the hunt for Kirk because he believes he was the one who stole the aether from the safe. The two run into one another at Kirk's house when on their own investigations and things are tense, to say the least. Nathan tries to talk Duke down from being so trusting of Mara but Duke refuses to listen, even when Nathan suggests that Mara is working with Kirk, and the two get into a physical confrontation that ends with him hitting Nathan over the head with a wrench.

Audrey and Vince break into Charlotte's car and find that though it is registered to the CDC for a Dr. Charlotte Cross, the DNA sample that Gloria is analysing does not match the DNA of the Charlotte Cross on file. They try to figure out who she is by searching the DMV database, believing this will be the database hardest to fool.

Duke manages to track down Kirk and demands to know where the aether is. In the confrontation, some of Kirk's blood gets on Duke and makes Duke hulk out and kill Kirk. Now Duke has yet another trouble in his already full system. Duke confronts one of Kirk's friends to try to find the aether so Duke's abilities activate, much to his confusion, and upon touching Kirk's friend, Kirk's trouble is transferred to him and the other two people in the trailer are killed as the oxygen is sucked out. Duke is horrified that he was able to transfer Kirk's trouble without any blood being exchanged.

Audrey and Vince discover an exact copy of Sarah's ring in Charlotte's glove compartment and this is enough proof needed to go find Charlotte and confront her, since Audrey and Nathan already have their own copies of it. Nathan and Duke meet at the Gull and then a delivery man arrives with a package for Duke. He opens it and finds the aether canister with Mara's toe in it. Duke realises that this is from Mara herself and was her way of telling him that she has the aether now. Nathan goes off to meet with Audrey while Mara calls Duke to gloat. She got Kirk to steal the aether and now Duke has tied up the loose end by killing him. Mara gets Duke to get emotional and cry but now his tears are aether. Looks like Duke is going to have to keep his emotions in check.

Audrey and Nathan arrive to confront Charlotte and Dwight is there with her, trying to suggest that they have a relationship (oh and they slept together earlier). She claims that the file is something she has to help with Audrey's sickness but then they pull out the ring and Charlotte has to admit the truth. Dwight tells Charlotte about Mara and asks Nathan to bring her the ring, promising to explain everything once he does so. He hands her the ring and is shocked to find that he can feel her. "Charlotte" then drops quite the bomb: she is Audrey/Mara's mother.

Haven airs on Fridays on Syfy at 7PM.

Haven S5E11 - "Reflections" Recap

Dwight tells Nathan that Pete's body was found in a dumpster near the hospital and relays this information to Audrey, who is still sick but working nonetheless. They know that Duke killed him because the time of death aligns with when the trouble ended. Duke is missing, as is Mara, though she's still chained up in Duke's custody. Duke is struggling because according to the journal, there are no other troubles he can release that won't have devastating consequences.

There's a new case to be death with, of a woman whose body fell apart. Vince tells Dwight what he learned about Charlotte not working for the CDC but Dwight doesn't want to believe it. He still thinks she can help all the troubled people using science to find a cure. Audrey begins coughing while questioning the owner of the bakery that the woman, Marcy, worked and died in. A concerned Nathan sends her to see Charlotte, who takes a blood sample and gives her a shot of vitamin B12. When Audrey asks why she hasn't exposed them, Charlotte says that she needs proof to convince anyone of what she has seen. She also shares the information that the victim, Marcy, didn't bear the same genetic marker as the other (troubled) people so it must be someone else's trouble.

Duke takes a nap and wakes to find that Mara has escaped from her cuffs. She calls him to say that she wants to help and that he should open the door. When he does, Mara is waiting there with groceries. Duke calls Nathan to ask for help by brining him some more aether but Nathan tells him that he won't because Mara cannot be trusted. Nathan refuses to change his mind even when Duke says that this is the only way to help him and all of Haven. Nathan goes to see Vince while Audrey heads to the hospital to look in on the next victim of the trouble, a boy named Terrence.

Vince tells Nathan about Charlotte's lie and goes to visit her. Vince calls her during the visit to create a diversion so Nathan can steal some hair from her hairbrush for a DNA analysis. Duke was unable to steal the aether because it was missing from Dwight's safe. Mara makes him believe that it was Nathan who had it moved and that now he must release a trouble since there is no other option. Dwight confronts Nathan about the aether but Nathan denies doing so and they begin to believe that Duke stole it.

Charlotte tells Audrey that she examined the protein markers in Audrey's blood and that she is going through rapid waves of deterioration at a cellular level. But since Audrey's feeling better she keeps working. She determines that the troubled person is Samantha, the daughter of the bakery owner (who is enormously prejudiced against troubled people).

Mara coaches Duke through releasing a trouble and the one to be released is the Egan family curse that makes the house into an oven. The house becomes heated and Mara tells Duke that he released this trouble because he feels isolated and alone like the little boy who felt abandoned. Duke doesn't want to leave and save himself, believing that he'll be dead and that this is better than him killing a bunch of innocent people. Mara kisses Duke and the trouble stops, since he now believes that Mara cares about him and the two have sex.

Audrey, Samantha's friend Grace, and Charlotte all go to see Samantha, who pleads for them to help her mother who has transformed into a little girl. The trouble is related to self-esteem and transforms people into how they feel on the inside. Audrey reassures Samantha's mother that she doesn't need to be scared and she changes back. Samantha's trouble had reversed Audrey's deteriorating condition but it begins again after Audrey talks to Samantha.

Dwight and Nathan review the surveillance footage and find that the person that stole the aether was someone from the guard, though they weren't able to see who exactly it was. Finally, we see Charlotte at Haven hospital remove a file from her briefcase that contains several pictures of Audrey's previous personalities, including Sarah Vernon and Lucy Ripley.

Haven airs on Fridays on Syfy at 7PM.

Haven S5E10 - "Mortality" Recap

Haven is under quarantine due to the contagion that is going after troubled people. Rebecca and Stan are guarding the only exit/entrance for Haven. Audrey nearly fails to get out but Nathan is able to get her through the barricade. Together, they must find the source of the contagion. Audrey has also developed a cough, so things are picking up. All of the infected people had food poisoning so they decide to look at the delivery guy who had voluntarily checked into jail a few days ago.

Dwight brings Charlotte out to an open field for her to do a bit of target practice. The way to show her the trouble is to show her his. He stands next to her and has her fire her gun at a target in front of her. When he gets shot, he segways it into an introduction to the troubles. To further prove his point, he calls in another troubled person to rapidly rot a banana.

Duke is most focused on getting Charlotte out of Haven and decides to let Mara out of her chains in order to help get it done. She continues to try to prove his claims wrong but nothing's really supporting her theories. He tells her if she's going to help, she needs to believe.

Nathan and Audrey go to question Victor, and learns that his trouble is to see the manner of eventual death of the people he touches. Victor is not the source, he is simply another victim of the disease. He must have caught it during one of his deliveries so they need his list. He wants to end his life, not wanting to see so much death, but Audrey and Nathan talk him down. Nathan leaves momentarily, and Audrey begins to cough. When Victor tries to help her, he tells her that her and her twin sister go at the same time. This is likely in reference to Mara.

Duke and Mara are heading to the quarantine border. Mara is chained up in the back of the truck to be hidden from outsiders. Stan asks to check the car, and Duke employs all his slipperiness to say that he has some contraband to keep him from going in there. He bribes Stan with a bottle of illegal Jamaican rum and Stan is plenty happy to let Duke drive on through.

Charlotte is talking things out with Dwight and decides that she may be able to try to develop a vaccine for the contagion and possibly even the troubles themselves. But in order to do so, she will need some of the aether, as it is the source of the troubles.

Audrey is having an existential crisis before her cough worsens, leading Nathan to take her to the hospital to get some tests run. Nathan must work the case alone for now. It's determined that Audrey is troubled but they have yet to know what exactly it is.

Duke and Mara have gone to Haven PD to find the aether and Duke attempts to break into the safe. But before he can, he and Mara have to hide under a desk, as Dwight comes in to retrieve the aether to bring to Charlotte.

Nathan determines that Pete the doctor is the source of the contagion. Another activated trouble kills the person responsible and two others in the morgue. Nathan tries to get Pete to control his emotions to reel everything in but Pete is more focused on his calculations, further stressing him.

Mara and Duke head to the hospital to try to get the aether. A guard member, Kirk, is particularly angry about what is going on and ends up knocked out by Duke. This and Kirk's infection triggers Kirk's trouble, which is to suck all oxygen out of the building. Nathan hooks Pete up to an oxygen tank and tells him to get out. Nathan goes to Audrey, trying to get her out, but passes out before he can do so, though he is able to hook her up to some oxygen first. Everyone is being evacuated. Duke uses his free-diving skills to go into the oxygen-less area. Mara is looking for the aether but ends up in a brief fight with Dwight who takes the aether from her hand. Dwight passes out, while Duke saves a passed-out Mara.

When they reach the parking lot, Pete confronts Duke, begging Duke to kill him to stop the trouble. Duke doesn't want to kill anyone but Mara stabs Pete in the neck with a hidden screwdriver. She goads him into finishing Pete off and end his trouble or else Pete will die in vain. Everyone still alive is saved and Dwight still has the aether. Charlotte promises that she will be able to cure everyone. However, Audrey is still sick. Nathan and Audrey wonder how this is possible.

Meanwhile, Vince has used a guard contact in the government to try and get the CDC out of Haven. There's just one problem - the CDC denies having any personnel in Haven. Who is Charlotte Cross?

Haven airs on Fridays on Syfy at 7PM.

Haven S5E9 - "Morbidity" Recap

Dave's dreams are worsening. He is seeing dead people in the woods and that same "Croatoan" tree carving. Dwight has returned to Haven after visiting his dead sister to learn about Audrey's return. He meets Dr. Charlotte Cross of the CDC, who asks for police help in getting Dave back. Dave has called in Chris Brody to try to get Dr. Cross off his case, claiming Dave was stung by a jellyfish. Remember that Chris has that charm trouble. She gives Dave some medication but won't leave Haven, wanting to make sure that it works. She and Dwight makes plans to go on a lobster date.

Audrey and Nathan must deal with a trouble. They're not sure what the rhyme or reason is but it's a set of dancing bear suits that remove the head mask to alternate between seeming empty and appearing as a dead man with a mutilated head. Dwight and Charlotte nearly see them but Nathan deflects them just in time.

Mara is playing mind games with Duke. She employs a bit of full-frontal nudity and tells him that she doesn't know why or how Jennifer died. He blames her for the town's visit from the CDC. She tries to coax him onto her side, saying that his friends will turn against him and that they think that he and Mara are two birds of a feather.

Dwight and Charlotte have a romantic dinner at the Grey Gull. It's all going quite well, they bond over their shared experience serving in the military, when a diner collapses with a fever and strange blisters on his lips. The cover story being used on Charlotte is that it may be food poisoning. The disease is only attacking troubled people and more patients are being brought in to the hospital.

The bear trouble is from a girl named Eve. The man in the bear suit is her dead father. Eve met Lucy, one of Audrey's past versions of herself, who helped her contain her trouble. Audrey learns that Eve was sick (with the same disease running through Haven) and that was how her trouble was triggered.

The problem with the disease is that it causes people to pain and since they are troubled, their troubles get activated. One patient dies because his trouble causes bubbles and sets it off in his IV bag. This sends an air bubble to his brain and Charlotte is not happy to learn that they kept this patient secret, even more so that he's dead.

Mara predicts that the troubles will start being rounded up now that the CDC is in play and that Duke's friends will sell him out. He doesn't believe her.

Charlotte discovers a common genetic thread between all the patients, and Dwight believes she may have found the genetic basis for the troubles, though she chalks it up to coincidence.

Audrey tries to talk Even down from her troubled state but is unsuccessful. She calls Duke and asks to speak to Mara, needing her help. Mara is less than helpful and mostly uses the time to call Audrey names. When Audrey tells Duke that Nathan has started rounding up the sick troubled people, he appears alarmed at Mara's words coming true. She reminds him that what happens next is him getting served up on a silver platter.

Audrey then determines that the bears are supposed to show up for her so she decides to get Eve out of town, which will prevent her from exposing them.

Duke shows up to the morgue and becomes angry at Dwight for what he feels is an ineffective way of handling it. Their argument is cut off by a girl's electrical trouble being set off. With the help of some special gloves, Dwight and Duke put the girl into a cadaver drawer. Charlotte shows up and she's not happy. Banks' autopsy showed up and revealed an air bubble in her brain and believes he was murdered. Then she finds the girl in the drawer and places Haven under quarantine.

Duke has the girl with the electrical trouble take down the cell phone tower, preventing Charlotte from calling out. Dwight is following her through town and trying to talk her down. She is cornered by him, Duke, Nathan, and other folks. She goes to hide in the Haven Herald office. Duke wants to throw her in a hole with Mara but Dwight does not approve of this plan, opting to taze Duke instead. He calls Duke out for caring only about himself and Nathan for only caring about Audrey. Nathan warns Dwight that he needs a plan and Dwight claims he does.

Duke returns to Mara, saying that things are bad and no longer believing his friends have his back.

Haven airs on Fridays on Syfy at 7PM.

Haven S5E8 - "Exposure" Recap

Audrey tells Duke about the ghost-murder and the bloody note but won't give up more information unless he shares information about his mother. He relays the news to Audrey and decides the best course of action is to call the Darkside Seekers for help. Seth is now working alone he arrives solo to Haven to help. He uses his electromagnetic field tracker to determine that Nathan is in the police station with them. Audrey tells Seth to get to work on a device that will allow for two-way communication with Nathan. She also tells Duke to work on getting more information out of Mara. Meanwhile, Audrey carries on working on figuring out the shadow trouble.

Nathan decides to play detective regarding the ghost murder. The other ghost Morgan points him in the direction of a new bearded ghost that appears shifty. Nathan presumes it's Reggie, whom he earlier had a confrontation with. Nathan doesn't bother to realise that Morgan is the one who has motive. If he were to return to the living plane, he would be back in a cancer-ridden body.

Dave has to stay put in the hospital because they want to run a biopsy on a sample from his leg wound. Vince is concerned what the results will say so he sneaks into the lab to try to steal it but is caught doing so. But Dave has Garland Wuornos' badge, which he uses to get Vince out of trouble.

Duke won't give Mara the Crocker journal but she's willing to share what he wants to know if he tells her about his mother. He needs some Bourbon to aid him but eventually, he begins. His mother was largely absent, save for the times that she'd come to pick up welfare checks after Duke's father died. He raised himself, becoming a bit of a criminal along the way, and only saw her once after turning 18. She was on the street in Boston asking for drugs and didn't even recognise him.

Seth gets the translator device set up and tries to test it on on Audrey but she warns him to back off, causing him to put his hands up. This makes Audrey remember that Reggie was on his knees with his hands up when he disappeared but his shadow was standing. She looks through the photos from the farmer's market and finds that the poses in those photos match the shadows exactly. The photographer Amy, is the source of the trouble. Audrey and Seth go to Amy's and confirm it.

Nathan and Morgan have gone to guard headquarter to find Reggie. Reggie and Nathan get into a fight and Morgan shoots Reggie in the back. Amy has noticed a slash in Nathan's jacket and blood on the shirt of the man that was stabbed. So the injuries the ghosts have appear on the photos too. Audrey decides to crossover to save Nathan and has Amy take a photo of her, but it doesn't do anything. Something's missing and they need to figure it out fast.

Nathan and Morgan learn about Amy being the source of the trouble and we learn that this Amy is Morgan's former fiancée. Duke has finished sharing, so Mara says that she made a painting trouble in which the painter's subjects would disappear when the painting was complete. For the subjects to cross over, the pictures need to be printed. Duke relays the information to Audrey.

Amy prints the photo and Audrey is immediately transported to the ghost plane. When she arrives, Nathan has noticed that Morgan was holding a knife in a picture on Amy's mantle that was taken the day he disappeared. Just as he has determined that Morgan is the ghost killer, Morgan knocks him out and takes his gun. So when Audrey goes to help Nathan, Morgan stands over her wielding Nathan's gun.

Morgan communicates to Amy through Seth's ghost machine that she should take a picture of herself and come across to end the trouble. Seth doesn't think she should but Amy does anyway. Morgan's pain over the loss of Morgan was what triggered her trouble. When she sees Audrey and Nathan being held captive and learns of all he has done, she realises that the man she loved no longer exists. All four of them are returned to the corporeal world, as Amy lets him and her grief go. Morgan still has a gun on them but Seth comes in and knocks Morgan out.

Vince and Dave toast their success over cocktails at The Grey Gull but the festivities are short-lived when the CDC arrives. Dave runs off before the woman, Dr. Charlotte Cross, can question him. She asks Vince where he is and Vince claims he's upstate.

Haven airs on Fridays on Syfy at 7PM.

Haven S5E7 - "Nowhere Man" Recap

Nathan doesn't want to hand over Mara, for risk that she could be connected to Audrey like she was with William. For now, Audrey will remain chained up in the basement. Duke is prepared to chop off one of Mara's toes to test the connection theory but he can't go through with it. Audrey and Nathan have returned to the Grey Gull to reconnect. Nathan gets a call about a case but he's worried about Audrey because he can't feel her anymore and she might not be immune to the troubles anymore. Audrey thinks the she might just be normal now and entirely her own person.

Three people disappeared leaving only a shadow behind. Nathan is worried about people's negative reactions to Audrey's return so he goes to investigate the farmer's market alone, as all the victims had been there. The only thing he finds is a creepy guard member. Nathan calls Audrey when at the station to update her but then he disappears, leaving only a shadow on the floor. Nathan is still there but he isn't tangible. He can see everything but no one can see or hear him.

Duke and Nathan show up at the station and Nathan watches helplessly as they try to figure out why Nathan disappeared. Audrey's sad to not have Mara's memories, worrying that she won't be able to do her job right. Duke goes to tell the guard people to get off Mara's back and they agree to back off for now. Nathan runs into a man who is like him but the man says there's no end to it and that they are ghosts. Through the man's advice, he goes to the cemetery to go through a sort of ghost orientation.

Nathan meets Moran, the oldest ghost in Haven. He says that they're in purgatory and that the reason there's not more is that some have moved on. Despite what Morgan says, Nathan is intent on finding a way to communicate with the living. Nathan remembers the conversation he had with his dead father so he thinks if Duke can just release the trouble that allows for talking to the dead, Nathan will be able to talk to Audrey.

Duke is arguing with Mara, trying to get her to help, but she's less than helpful. But as it turns out, Mara can see Nathan. Mara has retained her immunity to several troubles but doesn't want to help Nathan. Audrey confronts the guard member that had gotten into it with Nathan but ends up kidnapped by the guard instead after that man disappears. They want her to change their troubles the way Mara did but Audrey doesn't have the ability to do that.

Nathan tells Mara about Audrey's kidnapping and keeps pestering her. From Nathan's pestering to Duke saying he'll turn Mara over to the guard instead. Mara lets it slip that Nathan's there and relents to his wishes by passing on Audrey's location.

A man who dissolves everything he touches is up first to get his fixed, and is about to touch Audrey before Duke comes in with a door. Duke offers to kill them but Audrey says not to, as she is determined to prove to them that she really is Audrey.

Mara admits to Duke that she and Nathan aren't connected because she knows they still need her for her immunity. She'll help them but only if she gets the journal. Audrey talks to Nathan, though she can't see or hear him. She's worried she won't be able to save him the way he did her. He promises that he'll come back. Nathan goes to meet Moran and the other ghosts in the cemetery but finds one of them dead with a bloody message painted on a tombstone that ghosts can die, too.

Haven airs on Fridays on Syfy at 7PM.

Haven S5E6 - "The Old Switcheroo (Part 2)" Recap

Jeffrey Dunan is still on the run and Duke and Nathan remain trapped in each other's bodies. Mara doesn't know they've switched so they decide to come at her from different angles to try to get the real Audrey to come out instead of Mara pretending to be her. The clock is ticking with Duke's worsening condition. He needs to release a trouble soon or his body will explode.

Vince and Dave determine that Jeffrey's brother Skip must have the Trouble to so they should have another chat with Skip's wife Allison, who was working at the cafe when Vince and Dave first switched.

"Duke" starts to bleed from the eyes and "Nathan" warns him not to let the blood hit the ground or else a trouble will be released. "Nathan" remembers a reincarnation trouble that his great-grandfather killed, which causes different past lives to come out. If they can get that trouble to be released, they could get Audrey back. "Duke" says this won't work since Mara is immune to the troubles but "Nathan" says that  this might not be the case because she didn't understand what Duke was saying when he had the gibberish trouble. Duke's condition is something entirely new, even for Mara.

Vince and Dave ask Allison about her brother-in-law. She says that Jeffrey is actually Skip, her husband, and they switched years ago. Skip had been lying and cheating to her and she was too young and afraid to leave. Jeffrey confronted him, as he was in love with Allison. The confrontation triggered their switch. Her life was wonderful and she was with the man she was always meant to be with. Allison brought "Jeffrey" to the Haven institution, convincing him he had lost his mind, because Haven had always been a safe place for those who were troubled. She would call once in a while to check in and make sure he was okay and no one else had been switched. Vince and Dave determine that if they can get Jeffery and Skip together, it will resolve their emotional issues and stop the body-swapping trouble.

"Duke" and Mara are at the mental hospital. "Nathan" locks them into a room and Mara begins to panic when "Duke" cuts his hand. She demands to be let out but then she begins to laugh at "Duke," saying he's not strong enough to do it. "Duke" tells "Nathan" he has to do it and Mara learns that they have switched. The orderlies come in and Mara uses the situation to her advantage to get Duke and Nathan locked up so she can get away as Audrey Parker. "Nathan" is able to get an officer to let them out by reminding her of a sex game she and Duke used to play many years ago.

Dwight and Gloria catch Jeffrey at the train station but then Mara arrives. She shoots "Dwight" and makes off with Jeffrey. She plans to stall with Jeffrey long enough for Duke to explode so he can't use a trouble on her. If Duke explodes, both he and Nathan will die because of the body-switching trouble. She can't let them switch back because then Duke will be able to release the trouble, something Nathan wasn't able to do in his body.

Vince and Dave pay a visit to Skip (Jeffrey) who is apologetic over the problems his trouble has caused. He takes both of their hands to try to switch them back but fails to do so. They tell him to come back to Haven but Skip says he can't face Jeffrey after all these years. As they follow him, the thinnie nearly pulls Vince in because it's pulling at Dave's body. Skip helps to pull "Dave" back and this makes him agree to come back to Haven since their being switched nearly got "Dave" killed. As they are making the drive back, Vince-in-Dave gets a flashback of being in the woods, chasing someone, catching them, putting a hand on their hand, black smoke coming out of their face as they scream, and the word "Croatoan" that this person had carved into a tree. Vince-as-Dave loses control, and crashes the car into a tree. They make it back into Haven but Dave's body is put into the hospital.

Mara tries to antagonise Jeffrey into seeking revenge against his brother and wife but he says he doesn't want to hurt anyone anymore. Then "Nathan" comes barging in, weapon in hand. He stuns Mara and shackles her up yet again.

Jeffrey and Skip are reunited and hug each other, putting the past behind them and they collapse, as everyone begins to switch back, including themselves. Mara is still confident that Duke and Nathan will be unsuccessful in their plan for Duke to release the trouble and use it against her.

Dave wakes, having only suffered minor injuries from the car accident. Dave wonders why Vince had the vision this time and Vince suggests that it must be connected to his body, just as people's troubles stayed with the respective body when folks were switched. Allison comes in to apologise to them for all that happened. She shares with them a different version of the story about the Roanoke colony. It appears that the thinnie may be connected to the colony's disappearance, along with legends about green, fear-inducing mist. There's still no records about a baby being put into adoption but when Vince shows her Dave's adoption file, she recognises Agent Howard. What's strange is, the photo looks to be several decades old, but she remembers him looking exactly the same ten years ago when he wanted to buy their house.

Dwight asks Gloria about the secret between them, which he correctly deduces to be about Cincinnati. She tells him that his sister's Trouble activated, and she is now dead. Vince asks Dave what the secret was that caused them to be switched and Dave tells him he believes the incident where they lost an hour may be connected to another incident of lost time that happened 30 years ago. Vince remembers that this was the day the Colorado Kid died. Dave says that he pulled into the void on that day and woke up on the beach. He says that when he woke up, the Colorado Kid was lying dead next to him without a mark on him. So Dave has been wondering if he is the one who killed the Colorado Kid and Vince promises that they will figure out what happened.

Nathan, Duke, and Mara are all at the Gull together. Nathan promises Mara that if Duke dies, he will kill Mara too, as there will be no chance he can get Audrey back. Duke slices his hand, and his blood falls to the floor. There's a blast of energy and everyone is knocked to the floor. Nathan checks on Mara, but it's still just Mara, who gleefully claims that nothing has happened. Duke then notices there's someone around the corner of the bar top. Nathan goes to check and finds a naked Audrey lying on the floor. She gets up and everyone looks at her, shocked. Nathan kneels and pulls Audrey into his arms, as she thanks him for getting her back.

Haven airs on Fridays on Syfy at 7PM.

Haven S5E5 - "The Old Switcheroo (Part 1)" Recap

Nathan's still using the same strategy of pancakes and niceties to try to bring Audrey out but it's not working since Mara is now aware of Audrey's presence.

Vince heads to Manteo, North Carolina, based off a lead from Dave's adoption file. It's the home of the Croatoan Historical Society & Cafe. Dave's file also has an address he plans to check out, but his investigation has only just begun when all of a sudden, Vince and Dave find themselves in each other's bodies a la Freaky Friday.

Nathan decides to change his strategy of getting Audrey to come out. He decides to bring Mara on a case with him. Working a case and helping people is another thing Audrey loves to do.

Dwight and Gloria are the next ones to find themselves in each other's bodies. Nathan tells Dwight about his plan to bring Mara on the case. He's not happy about it but Nathan assures him he'll keep an eye on her, even going so far as to put a human dog shock belt on her.

Vince and Dave get on the phone with each other and commence their usual bickering. Dave is angry at Vince for following a lead and not including him. He decides to continue it on his own while Vince prepares to make his way down to North Carolina to join him.

Audrey briefly pops out while she and Nathan are investigating the switching trouble at the Freddy. She warns him she's having trouble staying and begs him to not tell Mara she was there. When Mara resurfaces, she says she's tired and leaves to take a nap.

Dave heads to the address in his folder. The house belongs to the Duhans, and Allison Duhan tends to him after he knocks his head on a tree. Allison is the same woman who works at the historical society cafe. She claims to have never heard of Haven, Maine, but we'd wager she's lying.

Gloria determines that if one switched person dies, so does the other. Vicki delivers a package to Gloria. It's from Cincinnati and Gloria insists on keeping it hidden from Dwight but overall, their switch remains comedic. Gloria enjoys her run in Dwight's hard, muscular body, and indulges in milkshakes and doughnuts.

Vince arrives in North Carolina and tells Dave they have to operate as one another so they can carry out the investigation.

Duke is having struggles with his troubles and will need to have another one released soon. Nathan hopes that Audrey will be able to do it when she makes another appearance but she's only able to relay the information that people switch with someone they're keeping a secret from. She also tells him not to take Mara on the case the next day. Mara's getting suspicious and the harder Nathan tries, the more difficult it becomes for her to surface. She tells them that Duke needs to do it instead. So Nathan will work the case himself and Duke will stay to tend to Mara/Audrey. Duke employs the strategy of talking to Mara about Audrey, and Colorado (where they kissed). Audrey comes out, giving them another chance to talk.

Vince finds the phone number for the Freddy Psychiatric Hospital in Haven lying on Allison's desk. Vince and Dave call Gloria and Dwight to tell them about their switch along with what they found regarding the phone number. They find a patient named Jeffrey Duhan is at the Freddy.

Duke and Audrey carry on talking about Colorado. Audrey asks him why he pulled away first, even though the kiss (from how we saw it) ended mutually.

Nathan accidentally lets Jeffrey Duhan out and he finds himself switched with Duke. Jeffrey is the one responsible for the switching trouble. So Nathan learns about the Colorado kiss and he is not happy. Duke struggles to adjust to Nathan's feelingless body, and then calls Nathan. Nathan picks up and doesn't want to leave Audrey's side but he relents and steps out to take the call because of Duke's theory. Duke says that it isn't Audrey, but Mara pretending to be Audrey. He says Mara caught on to what they were up to. The kiss did happen but he didn't tell Nathan because it didn't mean anything. Duke and Audrey never talked about it, but it felt as if it didn't go anywhere because Audrey had feelings for Nathan. Now that "Audrey" is claiming there was something more, Duke firmly believes this is really Mara. Nathan says they have to find Jeffrey Duahn to reverse the trouble. Duke thinks Audrey has been pretending for a while now to get their guards down. Duke's trouble is worsening, which Nathan can now feel. He needs to lose a trouble soon before he pops. Vince in Dave's body begins to feel strange and the real Dave tells him he's been experiencing strange sensations when near a thinnie. They want him back and "Dave" nearly stumbles in North Carolina before Dave intervenes.

Haven airs on Fridays on Syfy at 7/6c.

Haven S5E4 - "Much Ado About Mara" Recap

So Dwight and the guard have found Duke and Mara in Nathan's cabin but Duke convinces him to let Mara do her work to save Duke's life. She tells him to pick out a trouble that won't blow them all to hell and he selects the Scoville trouble. Mara is preparing to work her magic but then Duke says he's going to pretend that she's Audrey so that he can trust her. This causes Audrey to make another appearance, telling him that Mara can help him and that it isn't his fault. But when Duke asks what "it" is, Mara reappears and lays her hand on Duke. He spills a bit of blood and says some nonsense after exiting the cabin with Mara. He seems safe for now but it's a bit of problem that he's speaking nonsense when he thinks he makes safe. Nathan has made his way back to the cabin but is in hiding, and Dwight arrests Mara. He tells her that the one way she'll get to keep on living is to cure the troubles so she agrees to cure one person to prove that she will accept this deal.

Duke tells Nathan they need to save Audrey, in his own non-way, and they head into the cabin to try to get Mara. Mara simply decides to stir up some drama by telling Nathan that Audrey and Dwight had a flight in Colorado. But then Dwight comes in and has Nathan and Duke taken away. Jodi is brought in to be cured by Mara. Mara puts a hand on her neck and then removes her blankets before sending her on her way, apparently cured.

Nathan and Duke are chained up outside and Nathan is still upset about Duke and Audrey. But then dead birds begin to fall from the sky. Nathan goes through the Crocker journal and reads about the Scoville trouble before determining that this trouble is triggered by guilt. This revelation restores Duke's speech and he addresses his guilt over Jennifer's death. He then tells Nathan that nothing happened in Colorado. But more troubles are on the loose on the compound. Water begins boiling, and people's eyes begin turning white. Duke picks the handcuffs with a paperclip from the journal, freeing him and Nathan only for Dwight and the guard to catch them immediately. They discuss the troubles and Mara, with Nathan trying to insist that he needs to focus on treating her like Audrey. Duke convinces Dwight that he and Nathan are their best option for figuring out where these new troubles are coming from.

Vince and Dave have been arguing nonstop so they call in Maddie, aka The Iron Maiden for help with their relationship. But the source of their conflict is mostly their not remembering what happened in the cave so Maddie propose one-on-one hypnosis. Dave goes first and while under, he begins to fiddle with his leg wound.

Dwight is the one to determine that all the seemingly individual troubles are resulting from invisible microwaves. He orders everyone to protect themselves by getting into their trucks since the glass will shield them. Duke is questioning Mara and figures out that she didn't actually cure Jodi, but alter her trouble. She's no longer shooting out beams of light, but microwaves which are arguably more dangerous since they can't be seen. In his memory, it is shown that the beast was let out from the other side but he doesn't remember this after he wakes up. After Dave leaves, Maddie calls Vince to try to tell him what she has learned, but is attacked by the creature before she can finish her voicemail.

Jodi comes back and Duke explains to her what has happened to her trouble. He explains that her guilt about her husband's death is what's causing it but once she lets that go, she is able to control her trouble. Dwight goes inside to interrogate Mara, who makes every effort to cruelly wind him up. Dwight begins to her as Audrey and about all the brave things she has done. Audrey surfaces and apologises before asking him for help. Dwight comes out and tells Nathan and Duke what he has seen but they need Mara in order to cure the troubles.

Vince arrives at Maddie's office and she has no memory of treating them, thinking that they simply hadn't shown up for their appointment. Then Dave walks in, also not remembering they've had the session already. Vince tells them they must have uncovered something in their one-on-one. He asks Maddie to pull out her pad to check her notes and they do find that they had met but on the last page, there is a word scribbled out: Croatoan.

The boys determine that Audrey's love for her friends and helping people is what allows her to surface so they decide to team up and bombard her with love and memories. At first, Mara snaps back at them but they stay persistent and finally Audrey emerges again. She's worried that she won't be able to stay for long, as Mara now knows that Audrey is still there. Mara is essentially dragging Audrey to the bottom of the ocean so Audrey has to talk fast. She can only access Mara's thoughts, not her memories. But she tells the boys that Mara has been lying about being able to cure the troubles. Mara can only give people troubles. So they're still without a cure and now Mara has re-emerged, angrier than ever and determined to kill Audrey.

Beginning next week, October 10, Haven will air on Fridays on Syfy at 7PM.

Haven S5E3 - "Spotlight" Recap

Nathan still has Mara in his custody but hasn't told Dwight, who believes Nathan to still be looking for him. Duke is giving Nathan only 24 hours to fix Mara/Audrey or else he will call the guard on him. Nathan is more determined than ever to get Audrey back after talking to her. Two members find Nathan and Mara on the side of the road but after a struggle, Nathan is able to overpower them and make off with Mara. He tells Mara they're headed south while still within earshot of the guard members to throw them off their trail.

Duke, as a way of starting new after Jennifer's death, cuts his hair off. His friend Jodi stops by the Grey Gull and reveals she is having trouble with a newly manifested trouble. Things go dark and light beams shoot out from her chest, ruining whatever they hit, be it clothing or furniture.

Nathan takes Mara up north to his father's cabin. Mara knows where they are because of the time he spent there with Audrey. Mara gives Nathan a hard time over the tryst he had with Sarah and implies that his "love" is borne more from the physical. Nathan claims to have a plan to get Audrey back but it's unclear just what exactly he thinks will solve this problem.

Dwight and Duke are trying to figure out what to do regarding Jodi's trouble. She has already killed her sister and injured her daughter, presumably by accident. It seems as if she's getting more and more light beams so they need to stop her quickly. Through their investigation, they determine that she needs light to survive, but the more light she absorbs, the more dangerous she becomes. When she absorbs light, she shoots it back out, destroying anything in her path.

Nathan makes out with Mara, but whatever it was he was hoping to accomplish by that doesn't seem to work. Nathan meets Audrey again when Mara goes to sleep. She implores him to talk to her like Audrey because it helps her to hold on but she quickly goes under yet again. So when Mara wakes up, Nathan has pancakes ready and is calling her "Parker." He later tries to dance with her, after which he begins tickling her. It works, and Audrey surfaces yet again. She reminds him again that treating Mara like Audrey helps her to fight off her influence. She attempts to warn Nathan about the aether in Mara's pocket.

Duke and Dwight are trying to figure out how to help Jodie. Duke doesn't want Jodi to be harmed so he tells Dwight he'll find Mara and Nathan, leaving out the part where Nathan has been e-mailing him and told him where they're hiding out. Duke thinks that Mara can help, though it doesn't make much sense for him to assume that she will. When he gets up to the cabin, he interrupts Nathan right as Audrey was attempting to warn him about the aether but the stress of the situation breaks Audrey's hold and returns Mara.

Duke is angry at Nathan for acting like he's on a honeymoon. He's also in bad physical shape because of all the troubles inside of him. Mara tells Duke that he will die from overload. But she can help by releasing one of the troubles, which will alleviate some of the pressure. She says she can release one of the easier ones that will be easier for them to manage but she'll need a list of all the Crocker-killed troubles. They're all in Duke's grandfather's book, which is buried with his brother. Duke is in no shape to go after it so he has to send Nathan to retrieve it. After Nathan leaves, Mara begins taunting Duke about the trip he had taken with Audrey to Colorado. It doesn't do much, as Duke is already in bad shape. Mara talks him through the process of what they'll have to do to release the trouble but the conversation is short-lived as Dwight and the guard come crashing through the door.

Haven airs on Thursdays on Syfy at 8PM.

Haven S5E2 - "Speak No Evil" Recap

Duke is coming to terms with his being responsible for the havoc his troubles are wreaking and Nathan is in disbelief over Mara shooting him. Meanwhile, Mara stabs a woman in the eye with the pencil in order to steal her outfit. She then asks Vicki to use her drawing Trouble.

Dwight confronts Vince about Mara being the creator of the Troubles and Vince says that Audrey had told him in confidence, not wanting to worry Dwight. Dwight also informs Vince that Colette Barrow called to say that her family's Trouble has popped up again and needs protection from Reverend Driscoll and his goons. Dwight gets a text about the woman stabbed in the eye and before leaving to investigate, tells Vince about Duke being the one causing the Troubles.

Mara has Vicki draw the patch of woods with the thinnie, and then tears up the drawing, causing it to re-open. Mara tells Vicki when she returns, she will spare her from her wrath and attempts to go through the thinnie. But when she tries to go through, she is still unable to do so. She then decides she must make a new one, and uses a taser on Vicki to take her badge.

Gloria is working in the morgue when she finds that the black orbs in a vial have begun to shake. She then notices Mara outside. Nathan arrives later and finds Gloria hiding in one of the body bags with the black orbs tucked away on her person. Mara had used Vicki's badge to get inside and made a mess looking for the orbs but then took off when she saw Nathan coming up with his shotgun.

Dave wakes up and is greeted by Vince with a stash of his favourite things. But first, Vince wants Dave to tell him where he was. Dave doesn't remember much except for terrible pain, then reveals terrible injuries all over his body. He had the same injuries the last time he came back from the void.

Dwight and Duke go to the Barrows resident and find it ransacked, as well as an injured man bloody on the floor. Meanwhile, Nathan is still with Gloria who has several more bodies coming in, all dead at the hands of Mara. Dwight and Duke head to the hospital, where a nurse is accidentally effected by the sewing Trouble. Colette recommends that Dwight talk to her father, as the Trouble was eradicated while he was a child. He offers up a story about the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" monkeys being active when he was young and that the trouble would go on those that spoke from a place of denial.

A nurse shows Dwight the body of a Jane Doe that washed up on shore. It's Jennifer. Paramedics say there was no fluid in her lungs so she was dead before she hit the water.

Gloria looks over Dave's x-rays at Vince's request.

Mara returns Nathan's call about the aether. Nathan insists on meeting her in person to deliver one black orb in order to leave through a thinnie. He wants her to leave Haven and never come back. She says this will work if she can Trouble someone and suggests him. He's fine with it, saying she's nothing but an evil reminder of what he lost.

Dwight tells Nathan about Jennifer being dead. He also tells him the sewing trouble is triggered by denial. Nathan goes to Duke to deliver the bad news. Duke is in a state of denial regarding this so Nathan's eyes and ears are sewn shut and finally his mouth. Duke flashes through his relationship with Jennifer and comes to terms with her death, releasing her scarf into the ocean. The trouble ends and Nathan's face is restored to normal. Duke begins to blame himself for Jennifer being in Haven and dying but Nathan assures him that she would have come no matter what and that she died saving them. He promises that she won't have died in vain. He says he'll give Mara to the Guard and hopefully they can get her to stop all of this.

Nathan goes to meet Mara and gives her the aether while she holds him at gunpoint. She tells him she won't be leaving Haven and that she and William are not done perfecting their gifts. She then says she's going to turn Nathan into a battering ram to get the thinnie open. It's then revealed that Vickie has been doing a drawing. Mara become angry and strikes her before breaking her hand in the car door. Nathan has already gotten hold of the drawing. She says it won't work, as she is immune to the troubles. He reminds her that she's not immune to their world and uses the drawing to knock her out with a branch. The aether dissipates from her hand and Nathan cuffs her, taking a moment to look lovingly at what was once his love.

Vince and Dave are reviewing some security footage. 11:21 a.m. was when the lighthouse collapsed. There is a sort of surge in the video at that time and when it returns to normal, it is 12:19 p.m. They don't remember the noon whistle sounding but they should have, since they were in the lighthouse at the time. They have no idea what happened during that missing hour. Colette then comes in and says that her boy may never walk again. She is angry at Vince for ignoring Dwight's advice to send protection for him. She slaps him and leaves. Dwight says they need to get Mara and he has told the rest of the Guard about Mara being the creator of the Troubles. The Guard has decided they want Dwight as their leader, he is ready and willing to take on the responsibility, so Vince gracefully bows out of the position. Dwight tells Vince to focus on helping Dave and to not get in his way.

Gloria asks Duke how he's doing. He's sad. She offers him the opportunity to be responsible for putting Jennifer's funeral together, and he is thankful to her for being willing to ignore the government protocols. Duke says he's really going to miss her and Gloria says she misses her son.

Nathan looks over Audrey/Mara's body while he waits for the Guard to come pick her up. He says, "Goodbye, Parker," before lightly kissing her on the lips. Audrey then wakes and tells Nathan she's still in there and it feels like Mara is crushing her. She then comes out of it and Mara returns, angrily asking why Nathan is so close to her and threatening that he will regret this. He replies, "Maybe," before shutting the truck up and driving off with her in the back.

Haven S5E1 - "See No Evil" Recap

When last we saw Audrey, Nathan, Duke, and the rest of the gang, they were in the chamber below the lighthouse. They successfully closed the portal by throwing William in, and Audrey had reverted back to her original self, Mara, shortly thereafter. Duke had his trouble reactivated by Audrey in order to save baby Aaron from the crying curse. Season 5 resumes mere seconds after the cave collapse.

Gloria and Vicki don't know what's happening in the cave. They are with baby Aaron under the gazebo. Gloria is now Aaron's guardian and is struggling to adjust, wanting to be the best that she can be but stressing over all the little details, such as which lunchbox to give him or when to give him his first phone. Aaron is crying and Gloria is struggling to make him stop. Vicki draws a picture of the gazebo and uses her trouble to make flower petals float through the air and calm him. But the peace is short-lived, as the ground begins to shake. They then watch as the lighthouse breaks apart and a burst of energy shoots through Haven. They're concerned over whether people were in their.

Duke and Dwight wake on the shore. The last thing they remember is being in the cave under the lighthouse and they need to find the others. Dwight is concerned about Duke's eyes bleeding earlier but Duke doesn't want to deal with that at the moment. Vince and a wounded Dave wake in the woods, while Nathan wakes in another part of the woods and finds Audrey. They hug but she takes the opportunity to trap him in his cuffs and steal his weapon. Audrey is not Audrey, but Mara instead. Mara wants to know where Jennifer is and Nathan believes that Audrey is still inside Mara, though Mara says that she's gone, though all the memories from the identities are still inside. Mara needs the Troubles for something and she says she has a job for Jennifer. Her priority is also to get William back. Nathan insists that Audrey is stronger than her and will come back but Mara denies this and knocks Nathan out.

Duke stumbles across Nathan right as he is waking up. They fill each other in on what little they know and Duke picks the lock to get Nathan free from the cuffs. Duke is worried about Jennifer and doesn't want Audrey getting to her and having her re-open the door. They return to the now-destroyed lighthouse, which is now crawling with cops. The damage is being documented and Bill Stevens is concerned that the town could go bankrupt to try to build a new one, particularly if anyone died. But then Bill's eyes are inexplicably sewn shut.

Bill isn't troubled and Duke and Nathan assume that this is the threat Mara promised to unleash. Dwight carries out his normal method of investigation. Nathan talks with Vince in the hospital where Dave is unconscious and being tended to. The door to the other side seems to be destroyed as well but Mara had mentioned something that makes Nathan believe there may be another door. Vince doesn't know where any other doors may be so he offers Nathan Cabot's journal to try to help. Dave had hid the journal but Vince knew where it was.

The sewn-eyes Trouble is proving particularly problematic, as the leather threads are impossible to cut through and therefore cannot be removed. Duke is on his boat, still trying to figure out where Jennifer is.

Mara uses her Audrey-memories to impersonate her, heading to the coffee shop and go back into the stockroom. There is an energy that seems to be a portal but she has difficulty getting it to cooperate. She tries to take the coffee shop owner's keys but when he says that her strange behaviour makes him think he should call Nathan, she shoots him in the head.

Another Trouble manifests but this time, the victim's eyes and mouth were sewn shut. Vince calls Nathan and Duke to see the map he has found in the Cabot journal. There are thing spots throughout the town, which allow for easier access to the other world. There are five, including the one at the coffee spot and the no-longer-working lighthouse. The group then splits up to go to the remaining thin spots. Mara goes to the thin spot Dwight is guarding and fires her weapon, which sends bullets into Dwight's vest. She tases him to further incapacitate him and then asks him who is sealing up the "thinnies" after failing to get the other thin spot to work. He confronts her about the sewing Trouble and she says it isn't her but that she can make that work for her. Dwight doesn't know about the thin spots being sealed so she leaves him in the woods.

Dwight later calls Nathan to tell him what has happened and how someone is sealing the thinnies. Duke, upon being filled in, believes that Jennifer is alive and the one responsible for doing so.  Dwight heads to the hospital and learns that the sewn-face Trouble has claimed another victim. The last documented incident of this particular Trouble was in the 1920s, generations back in the Barrow family. But the Trouble hasn't been active since Constance Barrow died.

Dwight goes to visit the Barrow family and learns that Constance Barrow's death was ruled an accident, but it may have actually been a murder. The prime suspect was a Crocker and after the night Constance died, the Trouble was never again active in their family. Dwight visits Duke, who realises that he may be the one causing the Trouble. After his Trouble was reactivated, all of the Crocker-absorbed Troubles are now inside of him. This is a whole new threat they've never dealt with before. Duke also lets it slip to Dwight that Mara was the one who helped create the Troubles. Duke thinks that his stress over Jennifer's disappearance as well as his blood getting leaked may have caused the Barrows' trouble to manifest.

Comatose Dave is having flashes to the cave while asleep in the hospital. He may be the one sealing the thinnies but it's not entirely clear yet.

Mara visits the ocean thinnie being guarded by Nathan. He mentions his theory that Jennifer is sealing the thinnies, but Mara says she isn't strong enough to do that. Mara wanted Jennifer in order to be able to send a message to William. Mara is unable to get through the ocean thinnie and she can't make any new Troubles either because she doesn't have the box of goo, which she called "aether, the essence of the void." Because she doesn't know where it is, she wanted to get that message to William. Nathan continues to insist that Audrey is still inside Mara, noting how she hasn't killed him even though she's had opportunity. Mara gets irritated and shoots Nathan. He hits the ground but of course he's only injured. He is lying there, waiting for Mara to deliver a kill shot to the back of his head and he says, "I'll always love you, Parker." Mara appears confused and then walks off without shooting Nathan.

Audrey has proven to be a truly remarkable reincarnation but seeing the return of Mara should prove for one hell of a ride for the Haven gang. They'll have to defeat her but not in a way that destroys Audrey. Audrey is undoubtedly still inside there so perhaps we'll be treated to a Gollum-like argument between the pair? Given that this season has been split into two sets of thirteen episodes, will we see this battle with Mara extend into the second half? We'll have to stay tuned to find out!

Haven airs on Thursdays on Syfy at 8PM.

Haven S4E11 - "Shot in the Dark" Recap

Seth and Anderson are independent paranormal hunters that call themselves the Darkside Seekers. They are in Haven to investigate a murder in which the victim was missing his heart. Their devices lead them to a house in which they hear noises and a scream. They follow a blood trail and are chased out by some unknown growling creature.

Gloria shows Dwight the body with the missing heart. It appears to have been eaten out by something. While she's talking, Dwight spots Seth and Anderson listening in using surveillance equipment. Seth tells the camera (they film their hunts for a show they run) that the murders seem to have been done by a Rougarou. Dwight comes over to tell them to turn off the camera.

Duke has Jennifer go back to the Herald to try to find information on the connection between Audrey and William. Audrey is still in the hospital recovering from the bullet wound. William is in the next room over. Audrey shares her worry to Vince over the fact that William said they were responsible for creating the Troubles. She thinks it might be true.

Nathan and Duke go to interview Jemma, who was speaking with the last victim when she was attacked. They find Seth and Anderson already speaking with her. They get into a scuffle over the camera, their device starts ringing, and then the lights go out. Jemma is attacked in the dark and by the time they're able to get the lights back on, she is dead in a pool of her own blood. Anderson lies to Duke, saying he didn't manage to film it, but then shows the footage to Seth after Duke leaves. Dwight tricks Seth into revealing how their footage is being uploaded after he tries to blackmail them and tells Nathan that he'll have Jennifer try to hack in.

Dwight figures out that all the victims share the same birthday and Duke panics when he realises that Jennifer has the same birthday. They head to the Haven Herald and find that Jennifer is gone and the office has been torn apart. They decide to strike up a deal with the Darkside Seekers but they reveal that their footage of the Rougarou appears corrupted. The monster looks like a several black pixels but Duke tells Nathan and Dwight that those are the same black orbs that William controls. They go back to the hospital to question William but find that he is gone and Audrey has healed completely.

Jennifer calls Duke and tells him the Rougarou showed up but she was able to escape before it could get to her. She's hiding out at an empty warehouse so the team comes to get her. Dwight has the Darkside Seekers bring their detectors along. It can help to locate the Rougarou but when they get to the warehouse, it detects that Jennifer's book has the exact opposite reading as the Rougarou. Audrey recognises the book as one that she gave to Agent Howard before she came to Haven. When Audrey takes the book from Jennifer, the device stops going off but when Jennifer takes it back, the device resumes beeping. The lights go out and the Rougarou attacks. Jennifer drops the book in the scuffle but picks it back up right as the beast is about to attack. It then explodes into orbs.

The Darkside Seekers head out, promising not to show any of the footage. They now see that what the team does for the Troubled people and the town is really important. They will now go off in search of other strange happenings. Jennifer now sees the Guard symbol, orange and glowing, on the cover of the book but no one else can see it. She opens the book and finds a riddle on the first page.

The Child of Ruin
must find the
Heart of Haven
and summon The Door

The team tries to decipher the riddle's meaning and Jennifer tells them she believes she is the Child of Ruin and that she can summon the door that will send William back to wherever he came from.
