MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. S04E02 Synopsis: Meet The New Boss
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S4E1 - "The Ghost" Review
Daisy's on the run as the vigilante "Quake" but she's spending her time tracking down gang members in Los Angeles and this is how she learns of Ghost Rider, as he is killing them. Of all the characters o the show, Daisy's has been the most remarkable, as Chloe Bennet has proven herself a highly capable performer as her material has grown increasingly more heavy and dramatic, a stark contrast to her own cheerful, quick-witted disposition. Newcomer Gabriel Luna has already impressed as the Robbie Reyes incarnation of Ghost Rider and we should all expect big things to come from him on the show. In a single episode, we see the range of him being a dark, vengeful figure ready to murder wrongdoers, and a sensitive, compassionate brother tending to his disabled younger brother. The other newcomer in this premiere is John Hannah as S.H.I.E.L.D. ally Holden Radcliffe, and in all honesty, we had thought for a moment that he was playing Fitz's father. This dynamic should be great fun to see explored further, though we can't help but feel a sense of dread that this secrecy is going to be a source of unneeded angst in Fitz and Simmons' relationship.
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on Tuesdays on ABC at 10PM.
Scream Queens S2E1 - "Scream Again" Review
Following the other shows making their returns this week, Scream Queens returned with plenty of popular characters from season one and some new faces that are already gaining popularity all their own. The Chanels are as irritating as ever but their poor attitudes and incessant whining have been knocked down a peg as they must now fight their way back to the top after losing almost everything in season one. We're not quite sure what to make of the lack of follow-through with them being committed to psychiatric facilities. It all screams a lack of foresight from the writers/producers.
The main new characters that have folks talking are John Stamos' Dr. Brock Holt and Taylor Lautner's Dr. Cassidy Cascade. It would be irresponsible for me to not push the fact that Taylor Lautner is far too young (and young-looking) to be believable as a doctor considering the amount of schooling required to gain a medical degree. It's understandable that the show exists in a heightened reality of sorts but it warranted mention. John Stamos is refreshingly funny as his character uses just the right amount of meta to poke fun at Stamos always being known as the Handsome one. But no one is funnier than Jamie Lee Curtis, whose writing is so outrageous and made all the more brilliant by her spot-on delivery. Our one main gripe thus far is that the show has been back for all of five minutes and already the (white) Chanels are getting loved up with the new 'Hot' Doctors but Zayday, who remains the most interesting, likable and grounded character, shows no sign of getting some loving on. We're not trying to jump to accusations of misogynoir... but once we're a few more episodes in, we'll revisit this issue if the writing hasn't resolved the matter.
Scream Queens airs on Tuesdays on FOX.
Lucifer S2E1 - "Everything's Coming Up Lucifer" Review
The devilishly charming Lucifer (sorry, we had to do it) is back for its second season on FOX and right from the jump we get more of the things viewers loved in season one. Tom Ellis is spot-on in his delivery of the comedic aspects of his character and his chemistry is as strong as ever with Lauren German (Detective Chloe Decker), D. B. Woodside (Amenadiel), and also Rachael Harris (Dr. Linda Martin). But what Lucifer needs to do now is jump into developing more of the serialised plot points and mythology. Season one was a bit shaky in finding the balance between serialised and procedural story-telling. With these cop-shows it's easy for writers to fall into the comfort zone of the crime-of-the-week format. But genre fans have long since established an ability to be invested in longer stories and the writers should explore this more, which it appears they've begun doing with this introduction of Lucifer's mother. One other point that warrants further revision is the show's material for Kevin Alejandro, who has a track record of being criminally under-appreciated in his work. The writers would be better off putting Detective Dan in the know some time around whenever they do the same for Detective Chloe. Then create an ensemble of characters that can band together in fighting the forces of evil, be it supernatural or regular mortal homicide.
Lucifer airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.

Fear The Walking Dead S2E12 - "Pillar of Salt" Review
As "Fear The Walking Dead" hits the midway point of season 2B, things that were once broken seem to be finding their way back together. For the first time since the show began, we saw the core group of characters split apart. Madison's single-minded focus on potentially getting Nick back has done some serious damage to her relationship with Alicia and both actresses executed potent emotionality in the argument. The blossoming relationship between Nick and Luciana has us weary, as we are highly suspicious that the writers will kill her off to fuel his greasy-haired middle-class-angst, a tired old trope we're tired of seeing. But we'll refrain from kicking off fully until such offensive material comes to fruition. More than anything, the writers need to delve deeper into the material for Cliff Curtis, as they've only barely scratched the surface of his struggles trying to maintain a handle on the instability of his son's behaviour.
Fear The Walking Dead airs on Sundays on AMC at 9PM.
