The Diversity Chronicles #03 - "What's On Tuesday?"

Welcome to The Diversity Chronicles, a new op-ed series that will examine diversity and representation, predominantly in Western media.

What's On Tuesday?

The Flash (season 1 returns on Tuesday, January 19, on the CW at 8PM)

This superhero drama series is a spinoff of the highly successful show, "Arrow." Though the "Flash" himself is the immensely endearing Barry Allen, special kudos must be given to some of the other leading characters. Barry's best friend is Iris West, played by the stunning Candice Patton, who beautifully plays the many nuances of the character. However, we'd still really like for her to get even more screen time, though the show has been meticulously laying the groundwork for many characters and various mythologies and doing so tremendously well. But what's truly great about Iris is that she's not just a mere token-attractive-leading-lady, she is entirely interesting and compelling in her own right. Iris' father is Joe West. Actor Jesse L. Martin is the strongest dramatic performer on the show and brings the best out of Grant Gustin in those Joe/Barry father-son scenes. Finally, we're going to give a shout-out to Cisco, a mechanical engineering genius working at S.T.A.R. Labs. Actor Carlos Valdes' comedic skills reign supreme, though with the few dramatic moments he's been given he has also held his own.

Recommended episode (1x05 - "Plastique"):
To put it simply, this episode gives us significant strides in the perspective we are given on the depth of Barry and Iris' friendship. When Barry visits Irish as "The Flash," she makes a heartfelt plea to him in which we learn that the true driving force in her pursuit for this superhuman is all tied back to her love for Barry.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (season 2 returns in March on ABC at 9PM)

This show may have gotten a large following due to the substantial following of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), but fans searching for diversity can find something truly worth celebrating: Ming-Na Wen's Melinda May and Chloe Bennet's Skye. While both characters were interesting to begin with, it is the evolution and growth of the characters that proves most compelling. While Ming-Na Wen has already been an icon to Asian-Americans for over twenty years, her work as Melinda May has catapulted her popularity to a whole new level. In season one, Ming-Na Wen used her martial arts skills and maintained an icy gaze to become the show's fan-favourite badass, but as the second season has progressed, we have seen May take on more of a mentoring (Skye) and nurturing (Coulson) role. These developments not only allow us to better connect to the character, but keeps May from being just another reincarnation of the "Dragon Lady" trope (albeit a fun one to watch). As for Skye, she started off as the fast-talking, wise-cracking, computer-hacking whiz kid, but following the trauma of a team member (and love interest) being revealed to be working for Hydra, Skye 2.0 was born. After being mentored by May, which is what we really wanted to see from the beginning, Skye has grown more serious in her demeanour and developed into a skilled operative. We wouldn't mind a couple more wisecracks being thrown back in, though. Our recommendation to the writers? Drop the dead weight (unnecessarily added new team member Lance Hunter) so there's more time to allocate to the characters that are actually interesting. Speaking of interesting, honourable mention should be given to the villainous, though we'd prefer to call her "misunderstood," Raina. Ruth Negga has made Raina more intriguing with each new guest spot, and with one smirk alone we're left giddy and wanting to know what sort of trouble she'll be stirring up next.

Recommended episode (2x04 - "Face My Enemy"):
What's better than one Melinda May? Two of course! Through the help of some high-tech equipment, the brainwashed-evil Agent 33 takes on the appearance of Melinda May, allowing Ming-Na Wen the opportunity to play two characters in one episode and flex those acting muscles even more… but perhaps most exciting of all is the fight between the two Mays, which is one of the best action sequences on the show to date.

Recommended episode (2x10 - "What They Become"):
Since Skye's introduction to the show, her origin story has been clouded in mystery. But here we are finally given the answer as to Skye's place in Marvel's comic mythology: she is Daisy Johnson, AKA "Quake." This was a crucial revelation, given the fact that within the MCU, this character is also an "Inhuman" and there is an "Inhumans" film set to be released in 2018. If they include Skye/Daisy in the film as a lead role, Bennet will be the first Asian actress to have a leading role in any of the MCU films. But getting back to this episode in particular, Bennet does some of her strongest dramatic work yet. Bennet's growth as an actor has paralleled the growth of her character, both of which have been a joy to watch.

New Girl (season 4 returns on Tuesday, January 6, on FOX at 9PM)

First, we have to commend this comedy for bringing back Damon Wayans Jr. following the cancellation of "Happy Endings" (Wayans appeared in the pilot as Coach but when he opted to appear in "Happy Endings" instead, Lamorne Morris was brought on board as Winston instead). Having two black characters that are entirely different in their personalities and many of their interests, as well as just being all-around funny and quirky, is doubly beneficial to the often reductive portrayals of black men in media. However, we're not all that fond with the handling of the character of Cece. Being that she isn't one of the main roommates, we can understand that she may end up with just a bit less screen time than the other characters. However, the "New Girl" writers have really dropped the ball with Cece. There is all but no new information on Cece and her life. What is she up to when she's not being the most level-headed, cool, and badass character of the group? Hannah Simone is fantastic in her smooth delivery, if only we could just get more material for her.

Recommended episodes: the latter half of season 2
The arc in which Cece decides to embark on taking a slightly more traditional cultural route of pursuing an arranged marriage allowed for us to see Cece navigating multiculturalism in a manner rarely depicted in Western media.

Fresh Off The Boat (season 1 premieres with back-to-back episodes on Tuesday, February 4, on ABC at 8PM)

"Fresh Off The Boat" is an upcoming sitcom based on the life and memoir of chef and food personality Eddie Huang. This will be the first Asian-American television situation comedy since Margaret Cho's "All-American Girl" aired for one season in 1994. The series takes place in the mid-late 1990's when Eddie's family moves from Washington D.C. to Orlando, Florida, to open up a steak restaurant. Eddie's father is aiming to fulfil the "American Dream" ideal, Eddie's mother struggles with culture clash, and Eddie and his brothers struggle with multiculturalism/assimilation.

Fresh Off The Boat will premiere on Tuesday, February 4, at 8PM on ABC.

Gotham S01E11 Recap: Rogues' Gallery

Gotham was turned upside down at the start of the season, and Jim was forced to take up a post in Arkham asylum after trying to take down the corrupt mayor. Harvey is sitting in his desk alone. Barbara is still with Montoya, strung out on pills.

During a stage production at Arkham, an inmate attacks another. It's the fourth attack since Gordon's taken up residency. Gordon is being blamed, and he points out that the man needs help, not medication. The nurse doesn't have any training to treat, only to provide drugs to the inmates. The Director warns Gordon should there be another incident then he'll be placed on the remedial roster.

He takes the patient to see a doctor to check out his injuries. Dr. Leslie Tompkins finds that the patient is fine. She normally works in the women's ward, and tells him that the ladies are quite taken with the handsome Gordon. He's the talk of the place, the prestigious cop brought down by the corrupt system.

Cat finds a sick Ivy sleeping in a cold wet box, but she doesn't want to see a doctor. Cat takes Ivy with her to get help. Cat sneaks into Gordon and Barbara's home. They haven't been there for some time, Cat smell dust and rotten food, but its warm and dry.

The Penguin heads over to the waterfront. He's looking to get a pay off, claiming to collect it on the behalf of his boss and throwing out the “don't you know who I am?” but the man isn't willing to pay the higher rates. Penguin thinks that he owns the cops, but a blow to the jaw may say otherwise.

Gordon goes to check on the aggressor in the fight incident, and finds the man staring off without blinking. He gives him a small hit to the shoulder to get his attention, and Jones just falls over. Thompson finds that Jones has been given some intense electoshock therapy. His brain is mush. The Director blames Gordon, but again Gordon points out the logic of the situation. They're in a place with no surveillance, and they're understaffed. Gordon thinks that they should call in the GCPD, but the Director refuses. Jones is still alive, and so they can still count him among their inmates. The Director gives him until the end of the week to find out which inmate did it. Thompson tells him what it would take to do the sort of damage done. The big missing piece is keys to the cell.

Gordon goes and confronts the most likely suspect with access, another guard. The man squirms a bit, but finally admits that he lost his keys, and had to find another set, but he doesn't know where the keys went or who had them.

Fish and Butch sit down with some other men, who are less than pleased with Falcone. They're not happy that Falcone is raising prices since his own money blew up. Fish asks who they think should take over should Falcone meet his maker. They're going for seniority, but Fish thinks that they need some fresh ideas, ideas that she has, and that she'd be perfect to run the family.

Gordon interviews some of the inmates to see who killed the frog man, Jones and took the keys. He gets many different reactions from the inmates, and none of them helpful.

Cat looks out over the rooftop, down at the city.

Fish sizes up the others. Saviano is the problem Fish knows, but Butch tells her to let him talk to him first. He knows he can get him to change his mind. Fish questions Butch's loyalty, but he remains adamant that he's on her side.

The electricity surges again, and another inmate is shocked. Gordon hears him rattling a fence, and sees the tell tale marks of a shock delivered, mushing the brain. Gordon takes Royston to see Thompson. Royston can only remember the lines to his play, and nothing more. Thompson finds that the shock wasn't so drastic, either the technique is improving or they can't control the device. Gordon thinks she should stay away for awhile, that things are about to get hairy. The missing keys made him think that the inmates were to blame, but he's having a change of heart and thinks it may be a staff member. Thompson asks what makes him think it isn't her, he doesn't think she's the type to do it. There's something odd about her groupie adoration of Gordon, she's certainly got plenty of kooky to have done it.

Gordon takes his theory to the Director, but he doens't think its a theory that should be investigated. What's with this guy? Is he the most incompetent Director ever, or Sparky himself? Why is he so scared of the police. The Director tells him that he's not authorized to investigate the staff only the inmate, and accuses Gordon of trying to force his hand and call the police, but Gordon has already called them.

Montoya rouses the sleeping Barbara. She wakes up all smiles. Montoya asks if she's spoken to Gordon lately, and Barbara claims that she has nothing to worry about, that she's over Gordon. Montoya realizes her mistake as Barbara kisses her. She realizes that them being back together was a mistake, she should have never let it go on too long. Montoya sees that they're toxic together, the drinking and the drugs, everything. She can't help her, and she can't let Barbara derail her own recovery. Barbara tries to gather her things, but Montoya offers to leave instead. She sees that Gordon was good for Barbara, that he helped her in ways that she never could.

Harvey gets a good look at Jones and Royston. Jones is staring off into the distance, and Royston is spouting Shakespeare. Harvey is overjoyed to see Gordon, and Arkham lived up to the freaky hype he tells him. Director Lang tries to side step, telling Harvey that no one of authority called him and he shouldn't be there. Harvey tells him that its third degree assault at the least. Director Lang warns Gordon that its the end of his career, but Harvey questions if Lang was involved. He should desire to keep it quiet, especially if he were the one who did the crime, since he had the skill. Harvey takes him down to the precinct, while he tells Gordon to search the staff records.

Butch meets up with Saviano. They go way back. It seems that Saviano wanted the meeting as much as Butch did. Butch tells him that what Fish said was true. Gotham is changing. Saviano tells him that Fish is a sinking ship, and without him and his men, she would be nothing. Saviano offers Butch a pretty nice welcome package to ditch Fish and come over to his team. Butch doesn't accept or turn it down, but asks to think about it.

Penguin sits in his cell as Harvey arrives with Lang. Penguin is glad to see him. He tells Harvey that there has been some silly mistake, and begs him to let him call Maroni. Harvey likes having Penguin in the cell, that its soothing like a bonzai tree.

Fish's club is hopping. She asks Butch for an update. He tells her that he did see Saviano, and that he's working it. He asks for more time to get Saviano to their way of thinking, and Fish is willing to give him that time.

Harvey asks Director Lang what Electroshock therapy is suppose to actually do when its applied correctly. When delivered by the proper people it can alter personalities for the better, but it wasn't delivered by a skilled surgeon, there isn't one on staff besides Lang. Harvey tries to probe into Lang's concern over police involvement. He's got plenty of skeletons, but insists that they have nothing to do with the case.

Gordon is having no luck with the files. He's sure that there are files elsewhere, in the basement, but the nurse insists that no one has been down there in years due to toxic chemicals. Gordon asks her to take him down there.

Harvey continues to question the Director, but he insists that everyone there are good people that have been there for years, but one female does pop to his mind.

Gordon and the slightly off nurse head down to the basement, when they hear a noise. Its Dr. Thompson. She's surprised to see Dorothy, who tells her that they're going on an adventure to the basement. Thompson asks if she can come with them, but Gordon tells her no, that she should leave. Dorothy grabs Thompson, and shoves her towards Gordon and the stairs as she makes a run for it. Gordon tells Thompson to have the facility locked down. Harvey calls Gordon to warn him about Dorothy, but he already knows that she's not really a nurse, but an inmate. Dorothy opens up all the doors, and lets the inmates go. Thompson finds herself of the run as the inmates come charging after her. Dorothy calls in the rush and is crushed to death. Thompson finds herself at a dead end, but luckily runs into Gordon. She struggles with a fence, while he throws a few punches. He orders the inmates back to their cells, and for a minute they look like they're considering listening. Thompson gets the gate open, and slips through, which riles them back up. Gordon slips through as well, and together they lock the gate.

Ivy reminds Cat that she's a vegan as she sits in front of the fire. Barbara calls home and Ivy answers. She asks if Gordon is home, and Ivy tells her that he's busy at the moment. Barbara asks who she is and Ivy tells her that she's a friend of Jim's, implying more. Barbara throws her phone in a fit.

Harvey and Gordon deliver their findings to the Captain. Dorothy was an inmate, who killed kids with poisonous candy as a nursing student. She spent half of her life at Arkham. When it was closed down it looked like she hunkered down in the basement, and it seemed that she was trying to find a cure for her own madness. The Captain sees the closed case as a win. Everyone wants Gordon back, but the Captain can't bring him back yet. She offers him a drink for old time sake, and she's digging his new uniform. He does look pretty great in it.

Maroni pays Penguin a visit. Penguin's ecstatic to see him, but Maroni isn't so pleased. Penguin is looking pretty retched. Maroni points out that he's in the pen because he put him in there. He asks if he knows what hubris is, Penguin has overstepped more than a little in Maroni's eyes. He's no longer the favored pet. Penguin apologizes, vowing to never overstep again, and Maroni accepts. He tells the detective to let his friends out, and detective complies. Penguin stinks, and Maroni wants the lesson to stand as a reminder.

A ME comes in with photos of Dorothy Duncan's body, and has some bad news for the trio celebrating. Dorothy had the same electroshock marks as the others. Hers were old and hid by her hair. She has a victim herself. Harvey tosses back his drink as Gordon puts it together that Dorothy couldn't have did it to herself. They rush back to Arkham.

An inmate unlocks the gate. Sweet Aaron, isn't so sweet as he grabs the guard and snaps his neck. Gordon had seen the psychotic nature of Jack Gruber, writer of the play that went array, and he was right. Gruber was behind the whole thing, and Aaron was another of his victims, one that worked out much better than the others. Director Lang sees the pair and realizes that he just stepped into the frying pan.

Sleepy Hollow S2E12 - "Paradise Lost" Recap

Following Henry's killing Moloch, team Witness assumes that Henry is dead. Also, Jenny apparently survived this hot mess too… flash forward six weeks and we have Ichabod and Abbie at a local farmer's market. Ichabod comes across a worm-filled apple and he takes it as a sign that evil is brewing in Sleepy Hollow once again. He hones in on Wilcox Farms as the place that needs to be investigated. We also learns that Ichabod has been sleeping in the library while Katrina has been sleeping at the cabin where Abraham is still locked up. Ahem.

Abbie and Ichabod head out to investigate Wilcox farm and overhear some evil chanting coming from a barn. They run inside and a fight breaks out. These demons are dark blue with red eyes and the fight is short-lived before a black-winged angel named Orion comes in and kills the demons.

Pausing the interesting characters/plot developments for a moment, Katrina is all wrapped up in Abraham and insists that her falling in love with Crane was the spark for Abraham's jealousy and thus his turning evil. Yeah, sure, go ahead and just remove all sense of responsibility from his actions. She's trying to find a way to separate his body from the avatar of Death so he can return to his human form and we just. don't. care. at all.

Getting back to Orion, he's a former prisoner of Purgatory on a mission to kill all the creatures that escaped from it after Moloch died. He says that the barn demons are searching for a new master to serve and the smoke in their ritual has deemed the Headless Horseman as Moloch's successor. Orion doesn't seem entirely trustworthy and a bit of a rogue agent, but he promises to destroy the Horseman of Death if Abbie will just bring him to Abraham. So there's that going for him. Ichabod gets called away by Katrina, who tells him of her intention to try to save Katrina. Yeah. Sure. Because there's nothing better to do with your time and non-existent magical powers.

As if this weren't enough of a terrible plot point, Jenny is out trying to just live her life and is flirting with a cute bartender when who should come shoving his way in-between all the fun but Hawley & Oates. He also has a Sumerian rock that was formed when a demon impregnated a mountain. Seriously. It can apparently track demons if they can just figure out how to use it.

Orion is brought by Abbie to meet Ichabod and Katrina. It's also revealed that Headless killed Orion on the battlefield just as he did Ichabod. Katrina runs off to try to save Abraham and make him human again when she learns of Orion's intention. Abraham promises to play nice while she works her "magic" but she ends up letting him run loose. An annoying argument ensues that's not even worth listening to. It's the same nonsense we viewers have been subjected to all season.

Jenny and Hawley are trying to figure out the rock and then Mopely starts going on about how he's jealous and before Jenny can fully say her peace, Hawley smashes the rock open. It's actually a clay pot containing the tracker. Hawley looks into it and is able to see that the Horseman of Death is with the demons at his place, which apparently Team Witness wasn't smart enough to check first?

Abbie summons Orion with the chakram ornament he had given to her and is in agreement with him that they need to kill Abraham. But Ichabod calls her and shares his findings on Orion which are that he has a tendency to show up right before catastrophic events so he's either the cause or highly incompetent at heroism. She tells Ichabod where they're headed without letting on to Orion what she has just learned.

The demons bleed themselves to give power to their new master Headless, who is burning all his weapons. Orion ends up revealing his true intentions to Abbie, which are to absorb Death's powers after killing him. He wants to judge and cleanse humanity, yadda yadda yadda and he really has a complex about wickedness. He tells Abbie that together they can build a new age and he takes off and starts fighting Abraham.

Ichabod arrives and Abbie tells him about Orion's zealot ways. Their conversation is interrupted as they must fight off the demons, which can be killed with their own weapons. Headless ends up with Orion's chakram in his back and it begins draining his power. Abbie distracts Orion by trying to make him see reason so Ichabod can get to Headless' axe, which he uses to destroy the chakram. Orion is immune to Abbie's bullets but Ichabod is able to get the chakram out of Headless' back and smash it to bits. Headless chases Orion off, as he's no match without his weapon.

Abraham keeps his word and lets Ichabod, Abbie, and Katrina live but kicks them out of his house. Ichabod and Katrina have a husband/wife talk… something about needing to redefine their marriage or whatever. Still not interested.

Ichabod apologises to Abbie about siding with Katrina and Abbie apologises for siding with Orion. There's some talk about how they need each other to keep balance when really what's needed is for Ichabod to shut up, get a damn job already, and let Abbie take point.

But finally, we have at least one thing that makes this episode worth watching. A shoeless man comes shuffling into a local gas station. He chugs some milk and doesn't know if he's in heaven or hell. The cashier tells him it's neither; it's Sleepy Hollow. Really? Well with the rest of the writing this season, it sure feels like hell.

Sleepy Hollow airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.
