IT’S ALL GOING TO HELL IN 2012!
DARK HORSE ANNOUNCES FIVE NEW B.P.R.D. TITLES THAT WILL SHAKE THE ORGANIZATION TO ITS VERY CORE!
NOVEMBER 21, MILWAUKIE, OR—The epic story line that began back in 2010 with B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: New World is coming to a head in 2012. Dark Horse announces the most ambitious B.P.R.D. publishing schedule yet, with five new titles and some of the most earth-shattering events in the history of the series!
First up, in February comes B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Long Death, written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi, with art by James Harren (Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest, Heralds). A team is sent to the deadly woods from New World to investigate a new series of disappearances, but they discover more than just the monster responsible, as loyalties are questioned and tensions mount!
March will see the release of B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Pickens County Horror, written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, with art by Jason Latour (Wolverine, Scalped) and an all-new cover by Becky Cloonan! This chilling two-issue series brings a B.P.R.D. crew into the grips of a backwoods vampire clan hiding out in a Gothic southern home.
Next, in May comes B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Transformation of J. H. O’Donnell, pairing Mike Mignola with Scott Allie again for the discovery of what drove the Bureau’s expert on ancient foes to near madness after a mission with Hellboy twenty-four years earlier. This supernatural thrill ride features art by B.P.R.D. newcomer Max Fiumara (Amazing Spider-Man) and a cover by Becky Cloonan.
That same month features the return of the regular B.P.R.D. team of Mike Mignola, John Arcudi, and Tyler Crook, with B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Devil’s Engine. The Zinco Corporation again rears its ugly head after a devastating earthquake, pitting Devon and Fenix in an uneasy alliance against bat-faced monsters and the evil empire’s other mad-science experiments! Additionally, this new series will feature covers by former Hellboy artist Duncan Fegredo!
Finally, Cameron Stewart returns to the B.P.R.D. universe in June with B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: Exorcism! In this story we learn more about Ashley Strode’s evolution as an agent after she meets up with a familiar face for a series of exorcisms in a rural Indiana town. Mike Mignola and Cameron Stewart team up to share writing duties, with pencils by Cameron and covers by Viktor Kalvachev!
“Let’s break some stuff that can’t be fixed. Let’s turn some corners where there’s no going back” said Mike Mignola. “In both Hellboy and B.P.R.D., we’re saying, “Well, once we do this—once we round this corner—that’s it!” It’s not like, “Oh, Batman, different costume.” We’re doing stuff where there’s no way to fix it. That is the new reality in our world. You're REALLY going to see that in 2012.”
B.P.R.D. is sure to be the most-talked-about series of the coming year, as the team stands at the brink of the end of the organization and the world itself!
It’s all going to hell in 2012!

Walking Dead Recap S2E6: Secrets

Carl is finally up and about. He and Lori feed the chickens. Patricia gathers up chickens nearby, breaking their legs, preparing to feed it to the zombies, when a horse goes running across the property, maybe its Nelly. Patricia throws her bag of injured chickens to the hungry masses. What a waste of good chickens. She watches them rip apart the poor birds.

Glen keeps an eye on the barn, he hasn’t told the others. Maggie brings him some peaches, and she tries to get him to keep her secret. Dale and T-Dog try to talk to him, but Glen avoids them, burdened with guilt.
Andrea goes to apologize to Daryl for shooting him. He forgives her for her intention, but warns her the next time she shoots him he better be dead.

Glen urges Lori to tell Rick of her pregnancy. He begs her to take his rations if she’s not willing to tell Rick, someone needs to take care of her. And he has a point she’s too skinny, even before it was revealed she was pregnant I was thinking the girl needed a burger or five. She is super slim this year.

Rick plots out today’s scavenger hunt for Sophia watch. Glen delivers peaches, and struggles not to tell Rick of Lori’s condition. Patricia and Beth ask to take part in gun training, but Rick has to get Hershel’s okay.
They tell him that he gave his consent, but he goes to talk to Hershel himself. Carl ask Shane to train him too, but Shane tells him that he has to talk to his parents. Shane finds a gun on Carl, and takes it away. Lori isn’t comfortable letting Carl train, but Rick sees the benefits, and even suggests that Shane is the best person to do it. Lori finally agrees to allow it.

The group sets out for some gun practice, and Dale catches Glen in a lie. Glen is holding too many secrets and he spills both to Dale.

Andrea shows some skills with weapons. And Shane looks haunted.

Dale has a talk with Hershel. Looks like the horse seen earlier was Nervous Nelly, she went back in her stall. Dale asks Hershel about the zombie barn. Hershel doesn’t see the zombies as dead, only as sick people. Dale tries to reason with Hershel, but he’s holding onto a hope that just isn’t there. Seems that they knew about the zombie in the well, they left that “person” there, and Dale and the rest killed him. Dale tells him that they can make the barn more secure, but Hershel tells him its already secure, and asks him to just keep it to himself. He doesn’t trust the group, especially where his “sick people” are concerned.

Lori goes to help Hershel with the fences, and asks after Carl. She thanks him for all he’s done. She tells him they will earn their keep, and he makes it clear they should more on soon. Seems that Rick failed to mention they weren’t welcome once everyone was well.

Shane takes Andrea for some advance target practice. He riles her, pushing her too hard when she can’t hit a moving target. She walks away frustrated.

Lori asks Rick about them leaving. Rick admits that he knew, but he’s working on changing Hershel’s mind. Rick didn’t want to scare Lori, and he can’t stand to lose her faith in him.

Andrea tries to walk back to camp, and Shane gives a half-hearted apology for bringing her dead sister into it. Shane tries a different olive branch and asks her to be his back up on his Sophia hunt.

The smell of food makes Lori ill, and Dale notices. She tries to play it off, but he already knows. She tells him that she hasn’t told Rick yet, and Dale asks if its because of Shane. Lori has regrets about Shane, but she thought Rick was dead. And she worries about the baby growing up in the dark world they now live in.

Glen chops wood, and he apologizes when he sees Lori. But she isn’t mad. She’s ready to take him up on his offer of help. Glen plans another store run, and Maggie goes along. She’s upset that Glen spilled the beans. Maggie is unsure about the zombies, she still sees them as people too. When Maggie asks Glen what they’re there for, she’s mad that he keeps Lori’s secret. He splits up the list, and they go searching. A zombie grabs her, and I think her viewpoint on zombies changed, as Glen kills it to protect her.
Shane and Andrea find themselves in a nice quiet neighborhood.

Maggie is a little pissed when she comes back to camp, attacking Lori. Glen catches up to her, and he blames himself for what happened. She kisses him, and tells him that she can’t stand the idea of him becoming one of them.

Shane and Andrea go house to house searching for Sophia. They find all sorts of horrors, but no Sophia. The once quiet streets are suddenly crawling with walkers. And the two of them have to shoot their way out. Andrea finally finds her confidence and shoots the moving targets with accuracy.

Glen goes to Lori, whose shaken up still after Maggie’s attack. She feels bad for putting Glen in danger, but he’s the one that offered. He asks if the morning after pills would work, and he gives her prenatal vitamins just in case, and leaves the decision in her hands, but suggests that maybe she shouldn’t make the choice alone.

Andrea is pleased with herself, she and Shane drive away. She makes a move on him, and things get a little frisky in the car.

Lori contemplates the pills, taking them all, but she immediately regrets the decisions, and makes herself throw them back up.

Shane and Andrea return, they give Carol the news, they found nothing. Which at this point is good news, at least they didn’t find Sophia’s body. Dale asks what happened out there, neither spills the beans, but Dale suspects something and confronts Shane. Dale suggests Shane should leave, for the best of the group. Dale suspects that Shane hasn’t been so truthful about the night he went to the high school with Otis. He knows what kind of man Shane is, Shane denies it, but makes a veiled threat about his accusations. Don’t poke the tiger Dale, Andrea isn't worth it and don't bet that Lori really wants him gone.

Rick stumbles across Lori’s stash of meds Glen got her, and he draws unfortunate but accurate conclusions. He goes to find her, expecting the worse, and she realizes that the cat is out of the bag. She tells him they can’t leave because she’s pregnant, she didn’t take the morning after pills, she threw them up. He wants to know how long she knew, and he’s a little mad she confided in Glen rather than him. She admits how scared she is of the future, and he softens towards her. He wants the baby more than anything, but he won’t force her into anything. He asks for honesty, and she tells him about Shane. He knew. He gives her the it’s ok, it was the end of the world and you thought I was dead. And they leave it at that.

Last time, we saw Angel he was hell bent on getting Mohra blood and bringing Giles back from the dead, thinking that by fixing his latest debacle he’d be back on the path of righteousness. Angel and Faith had located the last known vials, since the Mohra killed himself, and were in the middle of a drag out brawl to keep their prize.

Now, Pearl and Nash make a mess of the auction, and Angel vamps out, but it’s Faith who has the upper hand and  walks away with the vial of Mohra blood. Even though Faith continues to follow Angel, she has plans of her own. Plans that don’t include taking on half demon spawn, or magic blood, but plans that come closer to normalcy for Angel.

And just before she’s about to make an irrevocable choice, the choice is taken out of her hands, and what they find is the last thing they expected. In a world devoid of magic, seems someone has turned to science, and created their very own Island of Dr Moreau in their basement, without the cute furriness.

Pearl and Nash are up to some tricks, but what they intend is still left to be seen. Which is probably bad, badder, and baddest for our favorite brooding vampire. As Faith delivers good news, she gets bad news in return, maybe some really bad news.

Christos Gage delivers another great chapter to the Angel and Faith saga. His twists are delightful and the remains storytelling is very fluid, this series should not be missed by any fan of the Whedonverse.

The Strain #1

The last of the three big teasers of San Diego Comic Con, Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan's The Strain is finally released. The art is by the amazing Mike Huddleston, and he holds nothing back in this first issue.

The story begins with a giant of a tale, and the victims left in his wake told by a grandmother in Romania, 1927.

In the present day, across the world, a father and son try their hand at bonding, but between the ex wife calling and the father's job, things aren't going smoothly.

There's a quarantine at JFK, and all reports are saying so far that an entire plane of passengers coming from Berlin are dead, and its Ephraim's job to figure out why.

In six minutes everything changed drastically for the plane, and when the plane finally opens, everything will change drastically for the entire world, even if they don't know it yet, but the little boy from Romania, now an old man, knows what's coming.

It's a strong opening. Although not a lot in way of action so far, the story is immediately intriguing. Del Toro is fantastic at creating worlds on the big screen, I cannot wait to see what he and Hogan have planned. This is going to be the series to watch, and $1.00 for the first issue is a steal. If you haven't picked it up already, do it! You won't be disappointed.

Don't Go in the Woods is sound advice, especially when there's a killer on the loose. Dark Horse Presents #6

As a reminder: ALL REVIEWS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Publication Date: November 23, 2011
Format: FC, 80 pages
Price: $7.99
UPC: 7 61568 17843 2 00611

Dark Horse Presents is back with issue #6. These anthologies are great for an introduction into the varied offerings of Dark Horse, with the wide assortment of stories, there’s always something for everyone.

This month kicks off with Resident Alien Chapter 3. In the ongoing saga of the visitor trying to blend in and hide out, all the while assisting the police in their high profile investigation. Good thing it’s a small town, otherwise this might lead to disaster, or it might anyways. There’s been a string of murders and the very people who are suppose to be preventing them, may just know more than they’re letting on. The entire town is full of secrets and the Alien is enjoying himself a little too much discovering them, taking too many risks that could spell disaster.

Finder: Third World Chapter 6 In true Ghostbusters style the Finder gets his jobs done. Sent with the  process server, the job seems easy enough, but nothing is ever really simple in his world. This storyline always throws me off since I never know what to expect, and this one is no exception.

The Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizzaboy Chapter 3 Always a highlight of the set, opens with Dog sitting poolside, with Pizzaboy and the little girl demon reading last month’s issue. I adore the tongue in cheekiness of Dog. But he turns serious as he continues his saga of his flight with the circus freaks. Finally free they face a tough road to what they hope is salvation, many don’t make it, close friends are lost, and Dog finishes his story. Let’s hope they tell Pizzaboy’s or Pazuul the demon in a little girl’s body next. She doesn't talk, but I'm sure Dog can find a way to make it work.

Beast of Burden: Story Time- The Dogs recant the story of the pack, a group of elite dogs and humans who fought together for the king during the dark ages focusing on two members Alric and Bitan. The story is used to teach the young ones a lesson, or is it?

Change: This is Fabio Moon’s first offering for Dark Horse Presents. The guy takes a chance, and changes his life. It’s quick, it’s cute, it speaks directly to the reader in and actual and roundabout way. The short story makes for a very nice, for a first impression.

Blood Chapter 5: Plunging your sword through the heart of your minion is one way to get your message across, but not exactly effective if you need something done, even if he can get a new body. It’s a bloody inconvience. Neal Adams is a master story crafter and he proves it with every stroke of his pen. Blood fights on, taking as much damage as he’s dishing out, all the while wondering how much more he can take, since he’s already taken more than he ever imagined possible, and as the winds of change roll through Blood hopes to be the one left standing.

Criminal Macabre: Die, Die, My Darling, Chapter 3- Cal McDonald is tired of playing games, but Fate is cruel mistress, and if he wants to keep is unlife he’ll have to continue to play. But before Cal can dash off on his next quest he’s got to shut his smart mouth and learn a ghoulish lesson. When Cal finally comes face to face with his intended killer, its not at all what he expected, and forces him to do a drastic course change, destiny be damned. Steve Niles is a genius, and I adore his writing more and more every time I see his work.

Number 13 Chapter 5- Number 13 doesn’t understand Lorna’s intentions, but the result is the same, and he must figure his way now. As blame flies memories return, and they aren’t happy ones, they aren’t ones he wants to believe even if the proof is before him. This is one series that always leaves me with more questions than answers, that I’m always threatening to quit, but like a bad habit I always find myself at it again.

Marked Man Chapter 6 Some are looking for answers, while some think they’ve finally found theirs. Father and Son are too busy patting themselves on the back to realize they’ve screwed up again, now with all the pieces in motion again, this one gets good winding the story back up.

Skeleton Key: Room Service- Fox spirit Kitsune and school girl Tamsin use their magic key to try to find their way home, but they stumble into the Artemis Hotel who could use some help with a ghost. Kitsune takes the job for donuts, and what they find isn’t at all what they expected. It’s a cute way to close out another excellent issue.
