Cartoon Network: New Comedies Panel

Before the Superman 75th Anniversary Celebration Panel was the Cartoon Network New Comedies Panel, I got into the room just as the panel was going to begin, so I could get a good seat for the Superman Panel.  If you’ve never been to San Diego Comic Con, the rooms are not cleared in between panels, so sometimes you have to sit through the stuff you don’t like so that you can have a good view of the stuff that you do, and sometimes you find new stuff that you like because of this.

The panel showcased three new upcoming CN shows: Uncle Grandpa, Steven Universe, and Clarence along with the creators and talent behind the show. Now Saturday was full of animation, with many returning favorites, but the new comedies panel was fresh and fun.

The panel featured Uncle Grandpa creator Pete Browngardt, creative director Audie Harrison, and Adam Devine (Workaholics) as the voice of Pizza Steve up first. This trio of guys were absolutely hilarious. Uncle Grandpa is a crazy mix of senseless fun. Pete and Audie kept saying Uncle Grandpa is someone everyone knows, I certainly don’t know an Uncle Grandpa, but that didn’t make it any less funny. They showed a couple of clips that were absolutely hilarious. Come on, Adam Devine is the voice of a slice of pizza who sings his name.

So here’s the official synopsis: “Uncle Grandpa, the uncle and grandfather of everyone in the world, stops by children's houses every day to see how they are doing. The children he visits start off being annoyed by him, but after a series of chaotic and surreal misadventures, they end up liking him. He lives in a recreational vehicle (RV) and is accompanied by a red talking fanny pack named Belly Bag, an anthropomorphic dinosaur named Mr. Gus, a photo cutout of a tiger named Giant Realistic Flying Tiger, and a talking pizza slice named Pizza Steve.”

Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar (Adventure Time) and creative director Ian Jones-Quartey were up next. Rebecca treated the crowd to a song with her ukulele. Steven Universe looks to be a mix of quirky fun. I don’t there was a single clip that I did not laugh through.

Official synopsis: “In Steven Universe, the world is protected from evil threats by the Crystal Gems, a group of intergalactic female warriors who use the power of special gem stones embedded on their bodies to summon magical weapons. The four Gems are: Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and Steven. Steven is a young boy who inherited a gem stone from his mother, Rose Quartz. As Steven tries to figure out the secrets to using his gem, he spends his days in Beach City doing activities with the other Crystal Gems, whether it's helping them save the universe or just hanging out. “

Clarence creators Skyler Page and Spencer Rothbel presented their creation last. Clarence was pretty funny as well, there’s sure to be a big Cartoon network following for all of them. But since they have a later start date there were less sizzle reels for them available.

Synopsis: The series revolves around Clarence, a boy who wants to do everything because everything is amazing.

Uncle Grandpa and Steven Universe are to start soon in 2013, whereas Clarence is set for early 2014.
