American Gods S1E8 (Season 1 Finale) "Come To Jesus" RECAP

The episode opens with Mr. Nancy sharing the story of Bilquis to Shadow and Wednesday. Bilquis is a fallen Old Goddess of spring and resurrection who had many men trying to knock her off her throne. She habitually consumes people and was able to continue doing so and survive into the modern era. Despite slipping into a low-point when her temples were destroyed and she lose worshippers, she is visited by Techno Boy who gives her a mobile phone through which she can use dating apps to find new people to consume.

The tale of Bilquis convinces Wednesday that they must find a queen. Mr. Nancy sews Shadow and Wednesday new suits so they can go to Kentucky and visit Easter, an Old Goddess of spring and resurrection. Wednesday warns Shadow that Easter may take a shining to him and that would not be good. He also notes that they might not be welcomed at first.

Upon arriving, they find that Easter is having a large party. She has survived into the modern era by capitalising on the Christian celebration of Christ's resurrection. Shadow begins to believe in the Gods, as more Gods seem to be present at the party.

We see Techno Boy visit Bilquis, saying that he owes her and he is now cashing in on the favour.

Laura and Mad Sweeney reach Easter's estate in search of Shadow, who is speaking with one of the many Jesus that are at Easter's party. Wednesday is speaking with Eastern in private, advising her that in the old days, starvation was a strong motivator for the people to believe in the Gods and pray to them. But Easter is visited by one of her rabbits that tells her of Laura and Mad Sweeney's arrival. Easter is alarmed that a dead woman is walking around and could ruin her party. Mad Sweeney and Laura want her to resurrect Laura properly but Easter is unable to do so, as she determines that she was killed by a god. Laura is furious and forces Sweeney to admit the extent of his involvement. He says that Wednesday ordered Laura's death and orchestrated Shadow's imprisonment so that he would be desperate enough to be malleable for Wednesday's biddings.

Media arrives to the party in the form of Judy Garland in Eastern Parade. Technical Boy and Mr. World are also with her, hoping to get Easter to join their cause and stand against Wednesday. Wednesday emerges with Shadow close behind him and the opposing sides engage in a verbal sparring match. These Gods believe that Wednesday is an old relic that should go quietly into the night but instead, he summons a lightning bolt that destroys all their men. He asks Shadow if he has faith and when Shadow asks who he is, he announces that he is Odin. Odin finally convinces Eastern to unleash her powers and upon doing so, she takes back the spring and casts a drought over America so as to ensure future worship. Mr. World declares that this means war and Odin says to let the people know that they can have spring back when they pray for it. Once more he asks Shadow if he believes and Shadow says he believes everything. It's then that Laura emerges, saying she wants to talk to her husband.

Finally, we see Bilquis on a bus headed to Wisconsin and about to consume another unsuspecting person.

American Gods will return for season 2 on Starz.

American Gods S1E7 "A Prayer for Mad Sweeney" Recap

The episode opens with Mr. Ibis offering to assist Mr. Jaquel, who is tending to a corpose at the funeral home. Mr. Jaquel tells him that he appears to have a story to tell, instead. Mr. Ibis goes to his office and begins to write a story from 1721 about coming-to-America. He begins by explaining that the colonies were only partially a place for the colonists to live with religious freedom. They were also a place for criminals from England to be sent so they could work off their punishment as indentured servants instead of receiving the death penalty.

This relates to the tale of a young Irish woman named Essie MacGowan, who was raised to believe in leprechauns along with other mystical creatures due to the teachings of her grandmother. She leaves offerings for these creatures and begins a relationship with the son of the household where she works. He gives her a family heirloom necklace, promising to return at Christmas and marry her. But when the mother of the household spots Essie wearing the necklace, the son claims that she stole it and Essie is sent on a ship headed for the colonies.

Essie hits it off with the captain of the ship and he agrees to bring her back to London instead. But as soon as he leaves for his next journey, she steals his silver and runs off, beginning a life of thievery so as to maintain her independence. Essie is eventually caught shoplifting and thrown back into prison where she meets another Irish prisoner, Mad Sweeney. The two talk about the new life that the colonies may promise but the next day, he's gone.

Essie is pressured to have sex with the warden so that her stay will be more comfortable and the encounter results in a pregnancy. This grants her the opportunity to go to the colonies with her baby where she works as a wet nurse for a tobacco farmer, who is a recent widower with a new infant. As soon as he becomes interested in Essie, she uses that to get him to commute her indentures servitude so they can get marry. The two are happy together for 10 years before he dies. She lives much longer and shares stories to her children and grandchildren about the supernatural creatures from Ireland. She receives one final visit from Mad Sweeney, who shares how she and others like her are the reason he made it to America.

Back in the present day plot, Laura and Mad are still on the road with Salim, who pulls over so he can pray. When Mad lets the name "House on the Rock" slip, Laura runs back to Salim and tells him to go there to find the Jinn. This results in Salim leaving them stranded, as he leaves with his taxi. Laura proceeds to steal an ice cream truck so she and Mad can carry on their journey. Time is of the essence since Laura's body is deteriorating quickly. Mad shares some cryptic ramblings about his origins, including how he foresaw his death in a war that he proceeded to stay out of. Since he now "owes a battle" this is why he is beholden to Wednesday and his battle. But his story is interrupted by a rabbit hopping into the road.

Laura swerves to avoid hitting the rabbit but this causes the truck to flip and she gets thrown through the windshield. Her Y-incision splits and then Mad's coin goes rolling out onto the street. This causes Laura to be fully dead once more. Once Mad wakes, he climbs out of the truck and spots Laura, causing him to flash back to the accident that killed her. He was there as she was breathing her last breaths and once she died, he spoke to a raven and told it, "Tell him it's done." Assuming that the raven was Wednesday's, this is a point of some serious plot-thickening.

Back in the present, Mad's happiness at having his coin back is short-lived, as he begins cursing before stuffing the coin and Laura's organs back into her body. This causes her to awaken immediately and she punches him in the face, sending him flying. After using her jacket to cover herself back up, she flips the truck back upright and tells Mad to "come on" and "move it" so the two can resume their journey.

American Gods S1E6 "A Murder Of Gods" Recap

The episode opens with a group of Mexicans attempting to cross the border into the States. They pray to Jesus to help them in their efforts and Jesus arrives in person. However, Jesus is shot by border patrol while trying to protect the Mexicans.

Shadow questions Wednesday about what it was that he saw at the police station, confused by the visit from the Gods. He also admits that Laura has returned from the dead but when they return to the motel she is gone and Wednesday doesn't believe Shadow, thinking it's just a hallucination induced by stress or grief. They leave together just as Laura returns to the motel.

Laura's car was towed by the police, as it belongs to a 'dead woman' (her) so she is forced to team up with Mad Sweeney, who wants to help her get resurrected properly so he can get his coin back. They encounter Salim when trying to steal his cab, and Salim decides to join them so they can find the jinn together.

Wednesday and Shadow head toward Virginia and when Shadow gets a parasite burrowing through his body, Wednesday pulls the car over to pull it out of him and toss it on the side of the road. They eventually reach their destination and meet with the Old God Vulcan who has kept control over a small town by using their strong belief in their right to bear arms. Wednesday hopes to recruit Vulcan to his alliance. Vulcan agrees and even forges a sword but then betrays them by telling the New Gods where they are. As an act of revenge, Wednesday kills him and curses his believers.

American Gods S1E5 "Lemon Scented You" Recap

The episode opens with an animated story about an ancient tribe travelling across the Bering Strait. This tribe prays to a god names Nynyunnini for help in their travels. But when the tribe faces great difficulty and obstacles on their journey, they begin to lose faith in Nynyunnini which results in the god being forgotten and dying.

Returning to the motel, Shadow must deal with the fact that Laura is alive and waiting for him. She admits to her affair and the events that led to her death. He struggles to understand how she is alive again but still somewhat dead. When she kisses him, she feels her heart give a beat and she is amazed.

Media summons Technical Boy, while assuming the form of David Bowie and brings a message from Mr. World who is the New God of Globalisation. Technical Boy is in trouble for his attack and attempted lynching of Shadow and reprimanded accordingly.

Shadow and Wednesday are arrested for bank robbery and interrogated at the police station. While Shadow is away, Mad Sweeney tracks Laura down and confronts her about having his coin. He wants her to return it but she refuses to give it back, as it was given to her by Shadow and is now inside of her giving her life. Mad Sweeney threatens her but Laura easily overpowers him and questions him. Mad Sweeney warns her not to trust Wednesday.

Media visits Shadow and Wednesday in the jail, this time assuming the form of Marilyn Monroe. Together, Media and Mr. World bring out Technical Boy and force him to apologise for his assault. These New Gods propose an alliance with Wednesday in which they will help him to 'find his audience' by sending a missile named Odin to attack North Korean. Following the discussion, they murder the police so that Shadow and Wednesday can escape from the station and consider their offer.

Finally, we see Laura break into a morgue and steal a bag of blood.

American Gods S1E4 "Git Gone" Recap

The episode serves as an extended flashback about Shadow's late wife Laura, whom we last saw waiting for Shadow in his motel room seemingly alive once more. She is introduced as a worker at a casino, living alone with a pet cat to keep her company. She is depressed to the point of attempting to commit suicide. She first meets Shadow when he comes into the casino she works at and tries to rob the place. She talks him out of going through with robbing the place by telling him of all the security measure in place but doesn't tip the guards off to his attempts. When she is leaving the casino, Shadow approaches her and the two go home together. The two embark on a relationship and get married but Laura's depression keeps her unhappy. Shadow gets a job at Robbie's gym.

Laura, discontent with the state of her life, coaxes Shadow to try robbing the casino again but this time she will be able to make the plan a success due to her being the inside man. Laura insists that she does love Shadow but it's just the state of their life that she isn't happy about with their modest jobs and no likelihood of their income growing. The plan doesn't work and Shadow gets caught trying to rob the casino. When visiting Shadow in prison, Laura insists that the plan was perfect and someone must have screwed them over. Laura wants to admit her role in the crime so that both of them can serve 1.5 years as opposed to Shadow likely serving anywhere from 3-6 years with Laura alone on the outside. He asks her to wait for him and she promises to do so.

Some time later, Laura begins having an affair with Shadow's boss Robbie. On the night before Shadow was going be released, Laura and Robbie get into a car accident mid-fellatio. Laura wakes to find her dead body thrown out of the car. Her surroundings then change into a desert where she meets Anubis. Anubis tells her she will be going through to darkness but Laura wants to go back. Anubis tells her her body has already begun to decay and that she will not have a choice in the matter. Before Laura can be sent to the afterlife, her body is pulled back to her own body.

Laura crawls out of the grave and is drawn towards a warm, golden light which is actually Shadow. She feels compelled to go to him and sees him hanging in the tree during his earlier assault after her funeral. She was begins destroying his attackers, as she now possesses superhuman strength. She releases him from the noose that had strung him up in the tree and carries on pulverising the rest of Shadow's attackers.

Despite this newfound strength, Laura's body is still rotting and one of her arms falls off from the fight. She carries it in her other hand and returns to her home to wash off and change. She must hide when Shadow returns to pack up the home. Laura goes into Audrey's (Robbie's wife) home and unsuccessfully attempts to sew her arm back on using a needle and thread. She is caught by Audrey, who screams in a panic but eventually is forced to settle down somewhat. Laura is sick, continuing to leak embalming fluid. Audrey confronts her about the affair and when asked, admits that Robbie is still dead, or at least she hasn't seen him walking around like Laura is. Laura also learns that Shadow knows about the affair and that Audrey tried to have sex with Shadow on Laura's grave. Audrey helps Laura temporarily sew her arm back on and gives her a ride to try to find Shadow.

The journey is interrupted by two morticians in the road, Mr. Ibis and Mr. Jacquel. They bring her back to their establishment and restore her decomposing body as best as they can to look how she was when alive. Mr. Jacquel is actually Anubis, whom Laura recognises from her time being dead. Anubis promises to complete his task and deliver Laura to darkness after she completes her quest. When she is finished being restored, she heads to the motel and gets changed before waiting in Shadow's motel room where they are reunited.

American Gods S1E3 "Head Full of Snow" Recap

Somewhere in America, a Muslim woman is alone in her apartment preparing a meal and talking out loud to her pet cat. There is a knock at the door and she thinks it's her son. Instead, it's a man named Mr. Jacquel who informs her she has died and it is time to come with him. She thinks he is a robber but becomes convinced when she turns around and sees her dead body on the floor of her home. Mr. Jacquel leads her to a desert where he removes her heart and weighs it on a scale against a feather to determine if she was a good or bad person. She lists some of her misdoings but the scale determines her to be a good person. Mr. Jacquel leads her to a set of five doors and tells her to choose where to go. She asks him to choose for her, saying he is a kind person, and she enters the door of his choosing.

In Chicago, Shadow is visited in a dream by one of the Zorya sisters. She brings him to the roof where they look at the stars. She asks for a kiss, having never had one, and offers him the Moon in exchange. She pulls it from the sky and it turns to a silver dollar which she gives to him and warns that he must never get rid of it or give it away, adding that he once had the sun but got rid of it. Shadow wakes and manages to convince Czernobog to play him once again with the same wager. Shadow wins the game and Czernobog says that when they go to Wisconsin, he will still hit him with the hammer.

Mad Sweeney hitches a ride with a stranger but a car accident leaves the driver dead. Afterwards Mad Sweeney begins dumping out coins and becomes upset to realise a particular coin is missing.

In New York City, an Omani businessman named Salim has a failed business meeting. He later speaks with a taxi driver that is later revealed to be an Ifrit. When they arrive at his hotel, the two have sex. The following morning, the Ifrit leaves and the taxi license is left behind for Salim.

Wednesday instructs Shadow to think hard about snow and expanding the clouds to become bigger and darker. When Shadow does so, he is amazed to find that not long afterwards, it begins to snow. Then, Shadow is confronted by Mad Sweeney, who demands to know where the coin is that he mistakenly gave to Shadow. Shadow tells him the truth, that he threw it on Laura's grave. Following this, Mr. Wednesday is successful in his scheme to steal money from bank customers through the use of a closed ATM and Shadow's assistance.

Mad Sweeney travels to Laura's grave and exhumes her coffin, only to find that both the coin and her body are gone. When Shadow returns to his hotel room, he finds Laura there waiting for him.

American Gods S1E2 "The Secret of Spoons" Recap

The episode opens with another flashback, this time to 1697 where a slave ship is making its journey. On board, a slave begins to pray to Anansi. The trickster god Anansi appears in a more modern-day suit and gives a monologue relating all of the horrors that will await them in America for the hundreds of years to come. The slaves get so riled up by his word that they find a way to break free from their chains and set the ship on fire in order to kill the slave-owners and prevent themselves from experiencing what Anansi foretold.

Returning to the present day plot, Shadow gets medical attention to treat his wounds and then confronts Wednesday about what cause him to be attacked. Wednesday is staying at a motel and offers to keep Shadow as his bodyguard with his salary being doubled. They will leave this town soon enough. Wednesday also assures Shadow that he is indeed outraged by this assault and that he is working on a plan to retaliate.

That night, Shadow dreams of Laura. When he wakes, he goes back home and finds the remnants of his welcome-home party that never happened. He cleans the house and packs up his and Laura's belongings. He and Wednesday leave town together and Wednesday gives him a list of various items to buy. While in a store, Shadow meets a New God named Media (Gillian Johnson) who speaks to him through a television on display and wants him to work for her. Shadow declines her offer and returns to Wednesday.

Bilquis consumes more sexual partners.

Shadow and Wednesday travel to Chicago to an apartment where Zorya Vechernaya lives with her two younger sisters and a worker that is actually Czernobog, the Slavic god of darkness and evil. Zorya and her sisters watch the stars to guard against forgotten horrors. Czernobog does not trust Wednesday to be there in the home as the two share a rough past. Following a tense dinner, Czernobog plays checkers with Shadown and proposes a bet with him. If Shadow wins, Czernobog will go with them just as Wednesday wishes, but if Shadow loses, Czernobog will kill him with a large hammer that Shadow has visions of being covered in blood. Shadow loses the game and Czernobog tells him he will kill him the next morning.

American Gods S1E1 "The Bone Orchard" Recap

The episode begins with the narration of a group of Vikings arriving in America in 813 CE. But their hopes for great things are short-lived, as the Natives of the land shoot them up with arrows if they dare to come too close from the shore where they landed. They are determined to leave but do not have the wind needed to steer the ships of their sails back home. They carve a statue of Odin and make offerings to him by blinding themselves in one eye to gain wind for their sails. After some time and further sacrifices, including death and bloodshed among their own group, the wind rises enough for them to leave in a hurry. The ones that made it home never set foot on a boat again and never spoke of that land.

The story shifts to present day where Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) is in prison. He calls his wife, Laura, and we learn that he is set to return home in five days. Shadow Moon senses something ominous is coming but Laura reassures him that soon he will be home and she is planning a party with a friend, Robbie. That night, Shadow Moon has a nightmare of himself in a forest being slapped by trees and one offering him a noose. When he wakes, he is informed that his wife died in a car accident and is shortly thereafter released early.

When waiting at the airport, Shadow spots a man named Wednesday home he later meets on his flight. Wednesday turns out to be a con man who scammed his way onto a first class seat in the flight. Shadow is sitting next to him because the overbooking in coach forced the flight attendants to move Shadow up to first class, too. Shadow offers Wednesday a job as a bodyguard but Shadow isn't interested in taking it. Once again, he dreams of the trees but this time, he sees a buffalo-like creature with fire shooting from its eyes that tells him to "Believe." The flight has to make an emergency landing and he decides to drive the rest of the way back.

Bilquis, an Old Goddess of love, seduces a man into sex and tells him to worship her during intercourse. He does as she asks and and consumes his entire body up into her vagina; her physical form remains the same even after consuming a man significantly larger than her.

Shadow stops at a bar and once again encounters Wednesday. He also learns that his best friend Robbie also died in the accident that killed Shadow's wife. This means that he is out of the job he thought he had waiting for him. A character named Mad Sweeney introduces himself to Shadow, claiming to be a leprechaun, and tensions brew between them. Shadow agrees to a reluctant and temporary hiring as Wednesday's bodyguard. The first order of events is for Shadow to fight Mad Sweeney; Shadow wins and earns a gold coin as a prize.

Shadow reaches home in time for Laura's funeral where he learns that she had not only been having an affair with Robbie but the two were messing about in the car when the accident happened. Once the burial is complete, he speaks to her coffin to vent his frustrations over the affair and his grief at losing her. He proceeds to throw his new gold coin at her grave and it disappears into the ground. Audrey, Robbie's widow, tries to proposition him at the graves as revenge for the affairs inflicted on both of them but he turns her down.

Upon walking away from the cemetery, Shadow is plunged into darkness as all the street lights around him go out. He spots some firefly-like bugs that lead him to a humming object pulsating with light. He prods it with a stick and begins to open and mechanically unfold before leaping out and attaching itself to his head. When Shadow wakes, he is in a strange room with the Technical Boy who interrogates Shadow about Wednesday, threatening to kill him if he doesn't answer. Technical Boy orders his Technical men to kill Shadow and delete him. He is flung upward and finds himself back in the read world where Technical Boy's men are beating him badly and proceed to hang him with a noose. The noose snaps before he can die, dropping Shadow to the ground, and Technical Boy's men are killed by an unknown assailant.

American Gods airs on Sundays on Starz at 9PM.

Badaki plays Bilquis, an ancient goddess of love who craves the worship she inspired in eras long gone, and who is eager to find that same relevance in today’s world.
Langley will play Technical Boy, a New God who is purveyor of all things technology. Desperate to prove himself, and hungry for respect and power, he struggles to keep his impulsivity and petulance in check, making him dangerously unpredictable.
Sean Harris is an English actor who trained at the Drama Centre in London.  His television credits include Showtime’s “The Borgias” and the Channel 4 miniseries “Southcliffe,” for which he won the British Academy of Television Award (BAFTA) for Best Actor in 2014. As a film actor, Harris is best known for his roles in Prometheus and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Harris has also received two Best Supporting Actor nominations from the British Independent Film Award (BIFA) for his roles in Macbeth and ’71.
Nigerian born actress Badaki grew up in England and the United States, and has been working in the theater. She recently guest starred on the Showtime series “Masters of Sex” and appeared in the Sony Crackle series “Sequestered” with Jesse Bradford and Summer Glau.  Additional credits include guest starring roles on the NBC series “Aquarius,”  “NCIS New Orleans” and “Criminal Minds.”
Newcomer Bruce Langley is a young actor with an extensive background in physical, naturalistic and improvised performance. Langley graduated with a First class Masters in Physical Actor Training and Performance in 2014 from the University of Kent. His theater credits include Faith Drama’s production of The Den and The Brockley Jack’s Rock Paper Scissors, as well as the independent film Deadly Waters. “American Gods” is his first television role.
American Gods has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

“American Gods” is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”) are writers and showrunners. David Slade (“Hannibal,” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”) is directing the pilot and additional episodes. FMNA’s Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk are executive producing the series along with Fuller, Green, Slade and Neil Gaiman. Senior Vice Presidents of Original Programming Marta Fernandez and Ken Segna are the Starz executives in charge of “American Gods.” Starz retains all network pay TV and SVOD rights to the project. FremantleMedia is distributing the series worldwide.

Harris is represented by Troika. Badaki is represented by Innovative Artists and MadCatch Entertainment. Langley is represented by D2 management and Jo McLintock at A&J.
