Galavant S01E06 Recap: Dungeons and Dragon Lady

Madalena asks if he missed her. She crossed him mind a few times, he's been through quite a lot to get to her. Galavant asks if she really wanted him to rescue her. She only found out about him coming to the castle a short time before, and she's not really interested in leaving the plush life she has. Madalena proves that she's been quite materialistic. She has a plan to remain queen and keep Galavant as her boy toy. Galavant breaks out in song, how he loves her. Madalena loves him as much some like her can. She doesn't really love him, but what he can do for her.

Richard cannot believe that Madalena almost tricked him into killing his favorite chef, and save her old boyfriend. Gareth thinks that he needs to man up. He heads out to check on his Queen, as Richard contemplates his betrayal. Chef suggests they see Xanax, the new magician.

Madalena takes Galavant back to the dungeon. Isabella is so glad to see that Galavant alive, even though she betrayed him, he points out. Isabella wants her parents. released now, but Madalena isn't Richard and she made no such deals. In fact, she plans to torture Isabella for trying to steal her left overs. Madalena orders Gareth to rearrange Isabella's face, and torture everyone else. Gareth isn't sure about taking orders from her, but Madalena points out that the king is weak, and Gareth needs a strong master.

Chef take Richard over to see Xanax (Ricky Gervais). He can't call himself a magician anymore, but he's still full of plenty of spells, and probably more than a few drugs. Xanax puts together a special brew to make Richard a whole new man.

Sid thinks that they need an escape plan. Galavant is still pondering what Madalena's song is really about. Isabella tells him that he deserves someone better, someone that lifts him up not tears him down. Galavant doesn't get what she's saying at all. Gareth wants everyone to just shut up. He's been through a lot too. He's loyal to the King his whole life, but he admires the strength of the Queen.

Xanax has his guests get comfy as they get ready to go on their wild trip.  The king sees a door, and Xanax sends them through it. It's the day his father died. It's not Richard near the throne, but his older brother Kingsley. He doesn't want to be king. He believes his destiny lies beyond  the castle walls, full of death, destruction, and bastard children. Dicky gets the kingdom,  under mockery, and Gareth gets appointed to the king's side. Even more embarrassing Kingsley decides to take the sword with him. Richard figures out that because of that moment, he's always acted like he's the second choice in everything. He plans to take back his kingdom, and his wife. Richard and Chef come out of their trip, but its not safe to ride yet, so the trio head back to check out Richard's sweet childhood room.

Isabella apologizes to Galavant again, knowing that her betrayal was worse than Madalena since at least Madalena had the guts to do it to his face. She begins to babble, and Galavant knows that she must feel really bad, because she does that when she feels bad. Galavant tells her not to feel bad, she did what she had to because of her parents. Love is strange, smug, bossy, gassy and smelly. Basically they really love each other, and they're starting to realize it. Love is nothing like the fairytales of childhood. Galavant sees that he's been blind. Madalena never loved him. Their stars are finally aligning when she's gonna die, but Galavant plans to save her and the day. More so he can't believe that the cells have been unlocked the whole time, and no one bothered to check.

Madalena asks about the status of the torture of her guests. Gareth tells her that he won't do her bidding, he may be a dog, but he's a loyal one. Richard is glad to hear that. He's got a serious case of the munchies, and puts chef to work. He tells Gareth to lock up Madalena. Things are over between the pair, but Madalena isn't ready to go yet, they have company. Kingsley (Rugter Hauer) has returned and he wants everything Richard has. He's probably totally jealous of the amazing beard that Richard has.

Galavant S01E05 Recap: Completely Mad...Alena

The ship has sailed, and land is in sight. Valencia is on the horizon. Galavant contemplates if he should save the kingdom or Madalena first, poor Galavant still has no clue that he's walking into a trap.

Richard cannot wait for Galavant to arrive so he can slay him and then bed his wife. Madalena screeches for her maid to fix her hair. Her maid has been getting sweet talked by the chef. Richard can't help but be excited about tonight, thinking that once Galavant is gone, and he delivers the gem to his wife she'll be happy. Madalena is just wretched though.

Madalena lets her marvelousness go to her head. She thinks that the answer to her problem is for her to take the kingdom for herself, and her ego has a few different parts, enough to fill up an entire hall of mirrors, all spurring her on.

Valencia's population has been drastically reduced the sign notes as Sid takes a potty break and contemplates zippers. The light in the sky is perfect for hero lighting, and so Galavant stops to do some push ups. Isabella looks for ways to stall, and Galavant finally accepts that he stinks, and needs a bath.

The trio head over to visit the monks, who've taken a vow of song. Galavant doesn't appreciate the song, but come on, it's Weird Al. Isabella asks for shelter, a bath, and maybe a little consell for leading someone she likes astray.

Madalena comes looking for a cup of tea. The cook lets it spill that he's planning something special for the evening. Madalena knows that he has a thing for her maid, so she'll help him win her maid if he lets her in on Richard's plan. The chef doesn't know much, just that things will go down around 9 pm.

Isabella talks with a monk, forcing him to break his vow of singing. He notes that she's fallen for Galavant, which she hasn't realized, and betrayed him as well.

Richard awaits Galavant while Madalena and the Chef wait. He's late of course. Isabella arrives alone, demanding that Richard take the jewel and leave Galavant alone. richard notes that the princess has fallen for the knight, and he's not surprised, but he tells her that she will bring Galavant to hi and shows her her parents under silver platters. Isabella screams thinking that they're dead, but they aren't yet. But they will be if she doesn't deliver Galavant.

The monks sing with Sid, and Galavant admits that Isabella was right. He needed a better plan, and she helped to bring him back to himself. Isabella notes that she didn't do all that much to bring Galavant back, and comes pretty close to paying him a compliment. She does see how he sees the good in people even after they betray him. Before the pair can make any confessions, Sid interrupts with his complaining about his crotch itching due to the monk's robes.

Madalena sets her plan in motion by writing a missive on the chef's back. She sends it off with the fastest pigeon. Madalena tells him that he has her permission to cook the finest of meals on her, and even have a bottle of wine from her cellar. Chef isn't sure that she'll even accept, but Madalena orders Gwen on the date. Gwen doesn't think that love is made for people like them, but Chef is sure that it is. Gwen tries to reason with him, but the chef is convinces her that they could be happy.

Galavant prepares to storm the castle. Isabella tries to talk Galavant out of the plan, but its too late. Richard has spotted them and he calls the guards in to capture them. They grab Isabella, and she tells him not to give, but he does. The women in poor Galavant's life are never as noble as he is. The guards take Galavant, Isabella and Sid into the dungeon. Galavant is at a loss for words, but Sid isn't. He cannot believe how underhanded she's been. Isabella apologizes, but she was worried about her family. Galavant tells that had she told him they could have come up with a plan. Isabella isn't sure that he would have helped if he had nothing to gain. It's too late now to know if he would have though. He asks her if Madalena really wanted him to come, Isabella confesses that she doesn't know. Galavant is taken away.

Gwen heads off to meet the Chef.

Richard prepares to hang Galavant. He unmasks him, but it isn't Galavant, but his chef. Galavant is unhooded and he's seated at the opulent table in the Queen's quarters. That lavish meal she told the Chef to prepare wasn't for him and Gwen, but herself and Galavant. She unties Galavant and tells him that everything is going to change. she's written someone who will execute her husband.

Galavant S01E04 Recap: Comedy Gold

Galavant prepares for the next leg of the journey. Isabella warns of pirates, but he is Galavant and he fears no bandits. It must be all his gorgeous bluster that keeps him safe and his ego inflated. Sid asks about the raisins in the trail mix, and Galavant rants a little about his likes and dislikes of snacks. The trio has certainly grown and they're getting along pretty well. They share pretty much everything except that Isabella and Galavant are kinda attracted to each other, even though Isabella is betraying him,a nd they both ignore Sid a whole lot. The togetherness may be getting to be a little much, especially when there are egos at play, and Galavant has a huge one, stealing the finale and letting the bandits get the drop on them.

The jester juggles, as the queen looks for distraction. Richard cannot believe that Madalena is fooling around with him, or rather he can, thinking that its the jester's jokes that has her captivated. Gareth claims being funny is easy, and proceeds to tell a joke so foul it doesn't make it past the censors, and shocks the King. Richard knows what he has to do though.

Richard gets the jester alone, and he fears for his life. He tells him that he knows precisely what he's been doing with his wife, and proceeds to stab him with his fake knife. Richard doesn't earn even a smirk, though he finds himself pretty funny, and he wants the jester to teach him to be funnier. Richard pokes him a few more time, finding the humor in it.

Galavant, Sid and Isabella are lead to see the pirate king. Isabella and Galavant mock each other, Galavant for his bravado, and Isabella for her snoring. They're brought to the landlocked pirate king. Galavant notices that the pirates have no boat. The Pirate Captain tells him that they don't need the sea to be pirates only to have black hearts. The Captain decides that they need to explain via Shanty. The song explains how they came to be stuck on land and make homemade organic desserts. They claim to steal from passerbys. Isabella tells the pirates that they are nothing more than poor travelers, but her story doesn't hold water when they find the jewel hidden in her purse. She thought it would be safe with her lady supplies, but the pirates found it easy enough.

Back at Valencia, Richard is ready to begin. The jester shakes with fear, but Richard has decided to not kill him. He tells him to teach him to be funny so he can woo his wife. The Jester begins his lesson, but Richard doesn't get it. The jester moves onto his second lesson, which Richard also fails miserably at. The jester moves onto another, and Richard still doesn't quite get it, but he thinks he now has the know how to satisfy his wife as the jester does. Poor delusional Richard.

At the pirate camp, Sid tries to get the pirates to not eat his pomade, but they continue on again. The Captain wants to store the gem away, but the pirates have lost the key again. Isabella notes that they're really kind of bad being pirates. Sid points out that its nice to be one the same page again. Galavant is enjoying the same, but Isabella tells him that if he did things right then she wouldn't have to point out his flaws all the time, and the name calling begins. The Captain comes over to Galavant telling to walk with him, but being tied up he cannot. The Captain struggles with his ropes, resorting to using his teeth before finally asking for help. Alone the Captain admits that they've met before at Lilith Fare, the Island of Lesbos. He pulls back his skin, showing he had fewer wrinkles, and Galavant recognizes him. The Pirate and his men use to be the scourge of the sea, but after awhile they stopped working together. He wants Galavant to join, and he'll let go Sid and Isabella. Isabella's mouth breathing is brought up, and Galavant goes to her defense, even admitting that he can't sleep until he hears her snoring. Awww. But the Captain is uncomfortable by the admission. He wants clarification on Galavant's choice. He tells him to call her a mouth breather one more time, and he does. Galavant disarms him. He's not just the guy who eats the raisins.

Madalena is brought forward, and she wonders what idiocy that Richard has for her now. She takes her seat, and Richard begins his show. Richard is less than funny, and Gareth is at his most menacing, forcing the people to laugh. Madalena demands to know what is going on, and Richard tells her that it is said the way to a woman's heart is through her funny bone. Madalena rolls her eyes at all of Richard's jokes, and the jester tries to help the floundering king. He tells the chef to give him the pie. It's suppose to be big finale, but he's dying out there. Richard hits Gareth with the pie, and earns a genuine laugh. Richard orders more pies to hit Gareth with, but with his drawn sword he decides it may be safer to find someone else to throw pies at.

The Captain calls Galavant a fool, telling him that his men will swarm him when they see him. Galavant doesn't fear them though, he's unwilling to let his team become like the pirates. They return to camp, and find that Sid and Isabella have already taken care of all the pirates. They decided that it was time they started working together and took out the camp. Galavant notes that he was on his way back because he had decided the same thing. Galavant tries to get the Captain to back him up. He tells them to take a look at what they have, they're gorgeous and diverse. It's true they are and they decide to remain a team. The pirate reminisce on what they had. Galavant proposes that they can either take everything, or team up and retrieve the stranded ship to take them to Valencia. The Captain accepts, while accidentally cutting Galavant's hand, very badly.

The throne room is being reset while the Jester looks on. Madalena corners him, is 4 o'clock fool around she tells him. The Jester doesn't seem like he wants to play any longer. Madalena tells him that if he's worried that she's mad about him helping her husband with that ridiculous show, she isn't, Richard's an idiot. The Jester though has had a change of heart, he feels guilty. She finds that feeling noble. She calls the guards to take the Jester away. If he's having feelings then he's of no use to her. She orders him to be taken down to the dungeon, the really scary one. Richard come flouncing in to see Steve, Madalena doesn't recognize her former playmates name. With Steve missing, Richard takes Madalena's hand and tells her some awful jokes.

The Captain calls his men maggots again, which they've missed, and they get to work to get the ship back down. The ship is soon off the hill, and back into the sea. Isabella has a confession to make to Gal. He has one too. He gives her a stash of trail mix, raisins included. He gives it to her and tells her to go wild. Isabella is grateful, but its confession time. She admits that she vilified him to make herself feel better about what she was doing to him. She set him up, and he's walking into a trap. After her confession she notices that Galavant didn't hear a word. He's looking at the destination. He admits that he doesn't always listen when she talks, and he vows to work on that. But now, its all eyes on the prize: Valencia and Madalena

Galavant S01E03 Recap: Two Balls

Galavant is back tonight for another hour of comedy. This is my favorite new show. The trio: Sid, Galavant and Princess Isabella have been riding for days, and they need to rest. Sid takes them to his home which sounds all good and well, until they ask about Sidneyland. Sid's village thinks of him some sort of Rockstar, and him exaggerating his heroic tales helped to build up his legend. Sid asks them to play along. Isabella is all in, but Galavant isn't so sure he even wants to save Valencia when he hears of their nightly plays. Sid brings them home to meet his adopted parents when he lays another whooper on them, his parents think that Galavant is Sid's squire. Poor Gal. Sid's mother puts him to work chicken plucking immediately.

In Valencia, the King tries to cajole the jester into telling some bad jokes. The jester is forced to tell the jokes anyways. Madalena quickly becomes bored. They've had their ups and downs but he's not giving up on them. She thinks he should, but he refuses. He calls forth the King and Queen of Valencia, and asks what they did for fun before they were taken over. They sat around the Elder tree for hours of unscripted theater. He has the same reaction as Galavant does to hearing this entertainment, its not their cup of tea certainly. The King cut down the Elder tree and turned it into toothpicks. The King calls forth the Eunuch and asks what they do for fun. They had balls, and then it becomes a round of kick the Eunuch in the balls since he has none. The King decides he will throw a ball, and the Queen wants to work out a set with the jester, which he thinks is a grand idea. The King is in high spirits.

Sid and Isabella sit with his parents for a delightful meal. His mother tries to force him to eat more, remarking on how skinny he is. Galavant eats at the squire table with the family's dimwitted squire, while Isabella digs them a hole telling Sid's family that they're engaged. Sid's father is beyond overjoyed, and his mother wants to celebrate. His parents take Sid through the town, and everyone celebrates Sid. The women are quite taken with him, and the men all adore him. They're so happy that his parents plan to throw a fancy ball. Galavant however is barely playing along, not wanting to share any heroics, not even in song.

Galavant remarks on the high number of dolls in Sid's room. Isabella thinks that it's sweet that his parents kept his room as he left it. Galavant continues his biting remarks, and Isabella calls him out on it. She mentions his bitterness and sarcasm, and he tells her if she can rhyme sarcasm with something that makes sense he'll play along for the ball. Can these two already hook up? The Sexual Tension is off the charts. Isabella doesn't get the chance when Sid interrupts. His parents are laying it on thicker than he anticipated and he's sorry, but Isabella tells him that there's no need. Sid's mother calls him back down, he's needed for a portrait sitting, and she wants his lazy squire to help out with ball prep. Galavant is about to blow their cover. Isabella points out his pettiness, and that he's not saving her kingdom for her, but to win back his lost love. She's putting on her pretty dress, and pretending to be Sid's future bride, and flips out a little storming out.

The King looks over ball preparation. He notes to Gareth how excited Madalena got at the mention of the ball and thinks he should have showed his magnanimous side sooner. Poor Richard, so naive, but such a great beard. The chef tells Richard of his meal preparation. The Valencians mostly ate the crops that they grew, but Richard burned most of those. Richard tables the meal plans. He asks Gareth about musicians, but they executed all of the musicians. Gareth has all the executioners gathered, to play music. Richard wants a catcher tune, but the executioners only know death.

It's ball time. Another party for the fancy folk. The squires are doing all the prep work, and there's a general dislike of knights. They think they're nothing more than a jackass in a can. Galavant has a little bit of a rude awakening. All of the pomp that makes Galavant the knight he is, they all hate. Eventually Galavant gets into the song, though he realizes that he's all those things.

Richard is happy to see that everyone has turned out for his ball. He's trying to prove his prowess to Madalena, but she's less than enthusiastic. The jester has a whole one joke for entertainment, since he wasn't working on his set, so its on to dinner time. Richard announces that he did burn all of their crops except a very small portion he kept for himself, but since they can't have crops, he shant either, and burns them all in front of them. The people are horrified, and he sees his error. Lastly, Richard calls out the executioners, who actually have a decent but morbid, catchy tune. No one is dancing.

Sid's parents are so proud of him. Isabella comes in and charms his parents. She tells them that she is so excited about the wedding. Galavant watches with a smirk on his face.

Richard's ball is picking up. The people are dancing when something comes over him. He tells them to stop when he realizes that they aren't actually enjoying themselves. He asks them for their opinions. The people really ridicule him, which he finds hilarious until the Eunuch points out that he must be blind to not see that his wife is off with he jester. The fun and games are over. Richard ends the ball, and orders the Eunuch killed.

Galavant asks Sid for a sidebar. Sid is mortified. Galavant asks Sid if he knows why he was hired. Sid assumed he lost a bet. Other squires tried to impress him with their skills, but Sid was himself. He told him who he was. The hardest thing in the world world is being true to oneself, and that is what Galavant loved about Sid. It occurs to him that being a squire isn't a great job, and being his is probably worse. He never abandoned him, or spit in his ale, so he'll play whatever part he wants, but he thinks that he should be who he is. Sid runs off happily. Isabella asks what that was about, and Galavant admits that was him getting off his high horse, and cautions her against the ale that may or may not contain squire spit.

Galavant S01E02 Recap: Joust Friends

The comedy event continues with episode two, which promises more awesome beards, handsome knights, jousting and John Stamos. Can't say there's anything mentioned there that I don't love.

Isabella, Galavant and Sid enjoy an easy peaceful ride. It's been all too easy of a journey, but that''s about to change. Galavant stops the group, to investigate and is bombarded by attackers. They are of no match for Galavant, and after defeating them all the beautiful Madalena is declaring him her hero. He must have fallen asleep, because she's not the good guy as we've come to find. He tells her that he was coming to rescue her. He still doesn't understand why she chose King Richard over him. Richard asks him how he can be hero without any pants. Definitely a dream. Madalena and Richard yuk it up, and Galavant screams, like a castrated hyena according to Princess Isabella. Galavant awakens, glad his pants are still in place. He declares that its time to go, adventure awaits, and the singing starts. Sid grooms his knight, and they're off to save a woman who really doesn't want to be saved, set up by Isabella, who hopes to keep Galavant in the dark that she's working with the king. Another great song in the bag, ending with an out of shape Galavant lamenting over his hurting tummy.

Galavant continues to belly ache as they reach the crossroads. Galavant thinks its a good idea to hunker down for the night, but Isabella is quick to point out they have a lack of funds. Luckily Sid spots the sign for a joust.

Dinner time in Valencia. Madalena petulantly eats. Richard gets his food via cannon ball. Tim Omundson is utterly hilarious as he is fed by his chef to Gareth's dismay. Madalena leaves the table. He makes the pair of men promise to never start a marriage after a kidnapping. She's quite the pain in the ass. Garth suggests that Galavant isn't the King's issue, that he needs to butch up a bit. Richard thinks he's plenty butch until he utters tummy flowers and realizes the truth. Gareth takes the King to his room, and gets a good whiff of Testosterone. Gareth plans to give his King a makeover so he can show his wife who's King.

The trio head over to register for the joust, and they run into Galavant's longtime frenemie Jean Hamm. The registrar announces that Galavant had wanted to enter the joust, but they don't have the entrance fee. Jean Hamm mocks Galavant, and Sid offers up the priceless jewel of Valencia as the entrance fee into the tourney. Isabella refuses to allow the jewel be used as collateral, but the registrar accepts it, and places in the same category as the rooster. Galavant is in and Jean Hamm begins to make some your mama jokes, to Galavant's annoyance. Galavant prepares, and Sid has troubles strapping Galavant into his armor. She worries that her family and entire kingdom on Galavant's skill, which he may have left in his other armor. After Isabella's announcement of Galavant and his accomplishments, he's allowed forward to the final round on merit alone. Isabella's small reprieve earns Galavant an extra day to prepare.

Galavant struggles with his dummy. Isabella needs Galavant to win this joust, and she plans to train him. Galavant laughs off her effort, but Isabella proves she's worthy. Her father trained her well. She easily knocks Galavant's sword from his hand, and he wonders if she plans to just humiliate him. Galavant doesn't want to play. He admits that he's afraid. Madalena took the legs out from under him, and he worries what happens next time. Any man can get knocked down but a hero gets back up. Isabella puts him through a tough training montage, and eventually he's almost back, and in mouth watering condition. Meanwhile Jean Hamm is knocking down his competition, making it to the final round. Galavant disarms Isabella, and she declares him finally ready.

To make sure that he's ready, Isabella heads to Jean Hamm's tent and proceeds to get him drunk on absinthe.

Richard summons Madalena for dinner, though she's unsure she can stomach a display, but things have definitely changed. The table is intimate, tiny with room just for two. He's taking Gareth's tutelage well. He's more gruff with her, demanding that she sit, and even pouring her a glass of wine. He's manned up some as a proud Chef and Gareth look on.

It's joust time, the main event is finally here. Sir Jean Hamm is announced, and he's having trouble standing, while puking all over the place. Mr. Cheekbones himself, Galavant, is announced. He comes out, and tells Isabella he cannot move. He trained way too hard. The slowest joust in history begins as the horses walk towards each over. Both knights make contact, and both fall from their steeds. The announcer tells the pair that the first to their feet is the winner. Jean Hamm and Galavant struggle to their feet. Jean Hamm falls over, and Galavant stays upright until he's announced the winner, and Isabella leaps into his arms. He thinks that he may be ready to talk on King Richard, and Isabella nearly confesses about the trap, but Sid interrupts asking if they're eating the rooster or keeping him. They're eating him, and Isabella remains mum.

King Richard enjoys watching his wife eat. He's finicky, but she eats with zeal. She shares a story about how her parents forced her to eat her pet goat, and since she's never really thought about where her food comes from. Richard never ate with his parents. It's a little bonding moment, and they break out in song. Maybe the other isn't the worst thing ever. Isabella and Galavant are finding that they don't despise the other either.

King Richard thinks that maybe Madalena could grow to love him like nanny Pearl did. Madalena breaks it down, disliking that he's making her to be the bad guy. She tells him bluntly that Pearl only loved him because she was paid to, that he's unlovable. Richard is left alone and he runs to Gareth. He needs a hug. Gareth unused to giving hugs, having only given his father one when he killed him, nearly crushes his king.

Galavant S01E01 Recap: Pilot

Galavant is finally here, and I cannot be more excited. The melodies have been like an infectious ear worm, and it looks amazing. Seriously, is it legal to have so many fantastic beards on one show. I think the clear answer is no.

Galavant opens up with the song that played thousands of times during Comic Con, and I'm not sad to see it again as the handsome Galavant is introduced along with his lady love, Madalena, whom he loved long and hard. They were deeply in love and as Galavant went to get her a piglet, King Richard took a liking to Madalena, and he stole her. Now, its Madalena's wedding day, and only Galavant can save her as he rushes forward.

King Richard checks on his bride to be and makes it clear that once they're married they're going to do it. Madalena doesn't sound the least bit enthusiastic about it, but she doesn't correct him either. On a side note how fantastic is Tim Omundson's beard? And how nice is it to see his very silly side?

Galavant storms the castle, knocking aside knights and showing off his prowess. No one can stand in his way as he makes it through to save his lady love. Galavant interrrupts the King's wedding. He's willing to fight Gareth, Vinnie Jones, all night, and even all of the King's men, but it won't stop Galavant. He makes a flowery speech. King Richard can offer Madalena fame and fortune, but only Galavant can offer her true love. Madalena has a little something to say about it, and she's thought a lot about things since her kidnapping and she's choosing the fame and fortune, to the delight of King Richard. It makes it an easier life, but she hopes that she and Galavant can still be friends. Gareth steps in to take care of Galavant. King Richard pauses his wedding to kick Galavant while he's down, but the kick barely grazes Galavant, Gareth finishes the job instead.

One year later. Galavant's squire, Sid, tries to rouse him. When he was hired it was a most prestigious position, but its changed since Madelena. Sid begs him to take an audience. He brings in the beautiful Princess Isabella with a ridiculously long name. She tells Galavant a tale of woe. Her family was slaughtered, and her people captured. She offers Galavant a priceless jewel from Valencia, which is all they have left, but Galavant isn't interested. She asks what happened to the gallant knight of lore. After losing his lady love, he's let himself go, and he's not ready to find himself. He turns her away.

Two months earlier. Princess Isabella sits in her hideaway in the basement. Above her, is King Richard and his Queen Madalena listen to the awful jokes of their court jester. Madalena is enjoying him all too much, way too much. She tells her king that he needs to find out where the King and Queen of Valencia have hidden their jewel. King Richard thinks that he's done all he can, but Madalena snidely comments that Galavant wouldn't have stood for that. She's not exactly secretive about it as she shouts it when King Richard asks what she said. Madalena practically stamps her foot about wanting the jewel. She's definitely not worthy of Galavant, and she runs off with the court jester. The poor cuckold king has no clue. A noisy midday snack is delivered, and King Richard brings the young chef closer for a little heart to heart. He's killed the poor boy's father, and grandfather. He realizes that he's been a huge bully, but he's under a lot of pressure. His bride hasn't been as great as he thought she would be, and he wishes to kill Galavant and then some. Gareth forces everyone to take part in King Richard's odd little ditty about killing Galavant, genocide and winning his bride's love. Gareth points out that Galavant still lives though, and King Richard decides if he can't kill Galavant, then he'll buy his bride's love. He sets out to get the gem from the King and Queen of Valencia.

Galavant tries to drown his sorrows, but the local Tavern cuts him off. Broke, the gem catches his eye, and Galavant struts over to Princess Isabella and asks if he can buy her a drink. She refuses, and he tells her that she can buy him one, as he asks for her to continue her tale of woe. Two months ago. She opened the trap door to her hiding spot as King Richard questioned her parents. King Richard has killed many people, but he points out that he hasn't killed them, even though he's been fighting off a cold. King Richard laments that his wife is, well, she's demanding, though others have more colorful descriptions of her, and she wants the jewel. The King and Queen refuse to give it up. It's priceless. King Richard orders their death.

Galavant stuffs his face, and Sid is forced to fetch more drinks. Princess Isabella tells Galavant how her father use to tell stories of him, his skill in battle, his heroism. She wants to know what happened to him, and his backstory. He tells her that his parents were people of great love, they both loved and hated eachother. He swore off love. He read and trained, and bettered himself. He comes from a long line of lovers, and couldn't fight genetics. Eventually he fell in love, and he fell hard. Madalena fell softer. He tells Isabella he would love to help, but he's sort of out of the damsel in distress business. Isabella can't turn a blind eye to King Richard's actions. At the mention of King Richard, Galavant perks up.

Two months ago. When Isabella cried out at her parents demise, she was pulled from her hiding spot. The gem was recovered, as Madalena comes stomping in again lamenting how inadequate King Richard is compared to Galavant. Rather than tell her that he's recovered the gem, he goes with plan B. To save her parents King Richard tells Isabella to go and find Galavant, and tell him how King Richard has invaded her kingdom, sell the story, and offer up the jewel as payment. When Galavant refuses, tell him that King Richard was a cruel man and that she had to listen to the sounds of him making love to his Queen after which she would cry, and say how she made the wrong choice., and how much she loved Gals. Galavant eats up the story. Galavant is ready to fight. He tells her that they will leave soon. Isabella feels a little bad about stringing along Galavant, but she doesn't have much choice. King Richard tries in vain to prepare to face Galavant. The Queen continues to be spoiled, unimpressed and diddling the court jester and that ends the first chapter of Galavant.

So what did you guys think? Was it as good as you had hoped? I have tot admit that I loved it. It was just as I expected. Lucky for all of us, the next episode plays now and it features the delectable John Stamos!

The Diversity Chronicles #01 - "What's On Sunday?"

Welcome to The Diversity Chronicles, a new op-ed series that will examine diversity and representation, predominantly in Western media.

What's On Sunday?

The Librarians (currently airing its first season on Sundays on TNT at 8PM)

This fantasy/adventure series is a spin-off of The Librarian film series. In this show, four potential-Librarians are recruited to form a new team to fight the forces of evil and deal with various forms of magical mayhem. One of these team members is Ezekiel Jones, an Asian Australian, played by John Kim, also an Asian Australian. It's almost unheard of to see Asian Australians get to play characters without having to change their accents (either to American English or a stereotypical Asian one), but that's not the only reason to appreciate this character. Ezekiel is a brilliantly skilled thief with roguish charm to match. Though little of Ezekiel's backstory has been revealed, only 3 episodes have aired thus far and many of the leads have yet to be more deeply explored.
Tune in to the show and spread the word so this show can be picked up for another season, and tweet John Kim at his Twitter here: @GdayJohnKim

Recommended episode (1x03 - "And the Horns of a Dilemma"):
After spending who-knows-how-long being a lone wolf engaging in masterful thieving shenanigans, Ezekiel learns what it means to be a part of a team.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (season 2 returns on Sunday, January 4, on FOX at 8:30PM)

This action-comedy series is set in the fictional 99th Precinct of the NYPD in Brooklyn. Though many shows hyper-sexualise their Latina character(s), Brooklyn Nine-Nine refutes this tendency twice over. There's Detective Rosa Diaz, a tough, no-nonsense detective that rarely smiles and often refuses to divulge personal information about herself to her co-workers. Actress Stephanie Beatriz gives us some of the best comedic deadpan delivery we've seen since Aubrey Plaza burst onto the scene on Parks and Recreation. Then there's Detective Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), whose perfectionist tendencies and high-strung determination to excel professionally and impress her boss are equally entertaining to the Will-They-Won't-They dynamics she has with Detective Jake Peralta. Further comedy gold comes from Detective Sergeant Terence "Terry" Jeffords (Terry Crews), who has numerous distinct character traits such as feeling insecure about his size and masculinity compared to his even larger, more muscular, brother-in-law (who calls him "Tiny Terry"), adoring his daughters, and enjoying expressing himself artistically. Finally, there's Captain Raymond "Ray" Jacob Holt (Andre Braugher), who offers intersectional diversity as the gay, African-American captain of the precinct. The show has frequently utilised flashbacks showing the struggles against prejudice Holt has overcome throughout his career, which are both funny and brimming with commentary.

Recommended episodes:
(2x02 - "Chocolate Milk") - This episode offers up one of the funniest performances we've seen from Terry Crews on the show, as Detective Terry takes his conflicted feelings about having a vasectomy out on Jake Peralta while under the influence of the hospital sedatives. We also see Captain Holt engage in one of his recurring plots on the show, a feud with Deputy Chief Madeleine Wuntch, played by Kyra Sedgwick.
(2x06 - "Jake and Sophia") - Rosa pushes Amy to run for union rep, and along the way made us wish for more material exploring the friendship between these two.

The Walking Dead (season 5 returns on Sunday, February 8, on AMC at 9PM)

This smash-hit series is one that explores the story a group of people fighting to survive the zombie apocalypse. Actor Steven Yeun has given strong dramatic performances as Glenn Rhee, particularly in the portion of his season 3 arc during and following Glenn and Maggie being captured and tortured by the Governor and his minions. Another outstanding character is Michonne, whose trademark side-eye and badass sword-wielding skills are just the initial spark to get your attention, after which you'll be hooked on actress Danai Gurira's gripping emotional potency in those moments where Michonne's vulnerabilities are shown.

Recommended episodes:
(From 3x07 "When the Dead Come Knocking" to 3x15 "This Sorrowful Life") - This arc shows takes us from the low point of Glenn and Maggie's traumatic experience with the Governor to the high-point of their reconciliation.
(4x09 - "After") - Michonne's back-story is explored and it's too beautifully done to spoil; just watch and enjoy Danai Gurira's brilliance!

Galavant (premiering on Sunday, January 4, on ABC at 8PM as a mid-season fill-in for Once Upon a Time)

This musical fairy tale-themed comedy will follow the adventure of a hero named Galvant who is looking to win back his love, Madalena, from the evil King Richard. But most excitingly, the show will feature a Spanish princess named Isabella, who will be played by actress Karen David, who is of Chinese and Indian descent. We were fortunate enough to interview her recently about the show and her character at the Unforgettable Gala 2014, which you can see down below.
